I'm 99% sure the death recap change was visual, nothing else
the old death recap clashed with the art style of the game. the new one doesn't. I believe this was the only reason for updating it, nothing else.

Agreed. The new one was touted as being more reliable, but it seems to have the same issues as the old one, so I don't think they changed anything meaningful.
