How does MMR work?

Ok sure but why··2 votes·10,340 views

I just asked a gold guy how he got gold, and he was like, "I get a shit-ton of feeders too, but I only lose 5 lp on every loss, because my MMR says I deserve to be higher."

So like,,,,

How's that work? Why do I lose 25 lp, when I get S ratings nearly half the time?

That guy must be lying. Or just staying gold because decay or something.

Buuuut here we go. If your MMR is high 2000, then when you lose to someone with lower MMR. Riot decides you don't deserve that loss, so you only lose a little LP. Oh how also when you beat that guy with less MMR, we really want you to get a good rank so you get more LPGA for beating someone with less MMR.

In your case, you have low MMR we will say 700. If you happen to beat a gym with 1000MMR, well you don't deserve it. So you only gain a little LP. But if that 1000 MMR guy beats you, you better believe Riot is going to puNish you into your proper rank with a high Lp loss.

You know. Just like any ELO system... except backwards.

The problem is Riot is forcing LPGA and MMR to be connected. But it is a very loose connection that is bad and hidden.

LP, dumb autocorrect.

So if you beat someone who's better than you, Riot says you don't deserve to be better than where you're at? What? And if someone better than me beats me, Riot says I deserve to be lower than where I'm at? How is that fair?

If you beat someone better than you, that should show that you're better, and deserve a higher rank. But Riot basically says that if you're a low rank, the MMR system will do everything within its power to keep you there? That shit ain't fair at all. I guess Elo hell does exist.

I agree. It is a bad system. But many "pros" will support it because if they win streak, they can climb super fast. They gain more LP per win, get to promos faster. They also get to skip ranks because their high MMR. But the rest are left grinding into 50/50 WR games.

People will say MMR is balanced between teams. So technically you are never beating someone who is higher than you. But we know that isn't always the case.

I thought Elo Hell was just bad matchmaking and consistent feeders. I would have never guessed MMR was involved.

mmr is based on recent win rate.

Your mmr goes up and down based on wins and losses not performance. Your mmr will go up by more if you beat a team with a better average mmr than yours and will drop my more if you lose to a team with lower average mmr than yours

Hearing it that way makes me wish it were performance. I don't want to lose MMR to a bunch of bronzies just because I got one single feeding bronzie on my team.

I know what it's like but if they did it like that then people would be more inclined to focus on their own personal score than trying to win the game if it they get behind rather than trying to pull a win

"Not feeding out your ass" and "Winning the game" are very, very, very intertwined. When was the last time you put five feeders on a team and had them win? Nooo, if someone feeds, they'll only win if the one guy who didn't feed stalls out long enough.

Ratings, KDA, ect have no affect upon MMR.

MMR works by Win / Lose. You currently have 53 wins and 63 loses, so of course you are going to lose more then you gain. Also the sites out there are only an estimate on MMR so they aren't correct. It also says that you have Bronze 1 MMR that is higher than average yet you are Silver 5 so it is clearly wrong.
