item 3135 item 3151 It's not that bad. If all they build is adaptive helm then you can still shred them, but if they build 2-3 MR items then you really start to feel it but don't forget that you have an ADC and your jg/top laner is most likely AD.

When a q-r-e combo takes out over 80% of your hp, and then your ult ends them before the stun ends, with the ult being able to damage anyone else in the area, the 4 second cooldown on her e isn't all too big of a problem

CDR is still a very useful stat to have in the situation where you miss your Q or enemies back off from R. Mejai's Soulstealer is a greedy buy.

that would depend on the mage... some mages like Orianna Karthus Cassiopeia def do not fall off in the late game at all whereas something like Heimerdinger Karma Annie tend to not have the greatest of late games

YumaS2Astral10 votes

This.

There are different types of mages with different functions in the game and you can't really compare all of them. They aren't like assassins which have only one main job (to kill squishies)

There are mages with a fantastic late game and generally weak early game like Brand Karthus Malzahar Cassiopeia - They are generally focused on dealing damage per second, which allows them to kill tanks late game, unlike other mages which can have their damage absorbed by a tank.

There is Taliyah which falls off late game. She is meant to waveclear and roam early, then snowball other lanes before late game comes. To a lesser extent, Ahri fits into this description. She has a really good and safe early game and is meant to snowball and end the game before she falls off. Burst mages like Lux Syndra Annie in general tend to fall off, but those have some tricks that allow them to still be useful late.

Some enchanter supports that can be used as mages mid like Lulu Zilean tend to fall off late game as damage dealers, but they still can be fantastic late game due to their utility. They are essentially mages that transition into secondary supports.

Siege mages like Ziggs or Xerath are neither strong nor weak at any phase of the game. They are not meant to directly combat the enemy. Rather, they are meant to poke, waveclear, and as their name suggests, help with tower siege and objective control.

Yea I have never seen a Brand with a weak early game, unless camped the entire laning phase. Even his shitty W has the same bug that Illaoi has where it's just longer then the indication it shows.

of the 3, only karma falls off. Heimer and Annie don't fall off but their win conditions are a bit harder later on. The reality is though, Annie always depends on flash and Heimer always depends on people fighting in his turrets. Under the right circumstances, their scaling is amazing and under the wrong circumstances, their scaling is meh. I wouldn't say they fall off, they never really experience a super high point at any point in the game. It's why they stomp low elo but arent great in high elo.

...

Heimer's late game is in no way as strong as his early game and neither is Annie's. They don't get stronger as the game goes on in the same sense as a Cass or Orianna or Karthus or any other late game scaling champion does. What they need to do gets a lot harder the later the game goes as opposed them having really solid early-mid games against the right people. Annie cannot blow up people as easily and Heimer's turrets just don't last long enough in the late game. Yes under the right circumstances their late game is great but then again the same can be said about any early game focused champion in the game.

buPPDrmXEO5 votes

Yes they fall off so hard http://imgur.com/RHX0orM as you can clearly see in this picture here, poor Ziggs fell off so hard in late game being a manaless champion with infinite wave clear and poke against a team with not much engage.

Imo Ziggs should've been allowed to build 7th item since assassins carry too hard in the late game compared to weak and underpowered mages.

Did I also mention that mages have zhonyas and assasins have hexdrinker? So broken.

waiting for WoW4 votes

Yes tanks are out of control right now

The few mages that could actually touch tanks like Brand, Cassiopeia etc... have all been made irrelevant by adaptive helm. AD like Jhin or Draven can chunk off all your hp with 1 crit by late game.

They need to do something about tanks like Galio, Zac, and Maokai being able to dive mages with hyper mobility and then taking no damage at all just because they build 1 adaptive helm.

FB Ospraey3 votes

it is just you. mages are supposed to be good at all points in the game. tanks bad mid game. assassins bad late. marksmen bad early. some champions bend that with being good at different times. but mages have strong base dmg in lane. scaling options. and unique kits

Arakadia3 votes

Tanks are best mid and aren't as great late.

Catastrop3 votes

Some of them do, like other champions in other classes, there are those who scale into late and those that kind of just pray to end the match by mid game.

Meep Man2 votes

That's how it's been since the beginning of League. The way scaling typically works, with a couple exceptions groups in each role, is:

Tank- Useful from Start to Finish, but Cannot Carry a Game Alone Support- Strong Early Game, Moderate Mid-Game, Questionable Late Game (usually becomes reliant on allies late game) Fighter- Strong Early Game, Moderate Mid-Game, Weak Late Game Assassin- Useful from Start to Finish, but Becomes Stronger Against Squishies and Much Weaker Against Durable Targets Marksman/ADC- Weak Early Game, Moderate Mid-Game, Strong Late Game Mage- Moderate Early Game, Strong Mid-Game, Weak Late Game

As I said, the game has become less strict to this rule, but when in doubt, this is usually how each roles pulls out. Also, it should be noted that Mage is the only class to be considered very strong Mid-Game based on these typical rules, which is why they never usually completely disappear from the meta unless Assassins or Tanks become overbuffed and become just as strong Mid-Game as well as during other sections of the game.

As for the specifics as to why Mages typically fall off, it is because by then most Fighters, Tanks, and select Supports on the enemy team have gathered a good amount of Health and Magic Resist. Unlike with Physical Damage, Health actually counters Magic Damage a ton since most Magic Damage is dealt on a cool down or in burst, meaning that if your health exceeds a Mage's burst, they usually can't kill you as long as you don't stick around or heal up. Once late game hits, a good half of the enemy team at least will usually be tanky enough to survive a Mage's burst, meaning the only characters a Mage can typically kill on the enemy team during the late game are Marksman, Mages, Assassins, and select Supports. That sounds like a lot, but Mages and Assassins typically share the same team space, meaning in reality that's only about 2.5 of the roles in the game being able to be killed by a Mage. Furthermore, Mages won't typically be able to outright burst a Marksman against a decent team since a Fighter or Tank on the enemy team can peel very well for their Marksman, meaning the kill potential of a Mage drops off drastically. Basically, once most of the enemy team can't be killed by a Mages burst, the Mage's usefulness drops off considerably unless they have TONS of crowd control.

Blutseuche2 votes

Damage type mages do fall off a bit, because Tanks are really good right now and its Adc's that are supposed to kill them anyway.

Adc's can outplay mages and burst them really hard with their crits, but Mages can do it aswell, so they both threaten each other. But Mages will win till ultra late game.

Overall, i think mages are dominant in Lategame. One stray AoE spell and sometimes 100-30 an Adc.

Utility Champs like Ori or special mages like Karthus thrive in the Lategame. Their damage is insane, the Utility they bring to the table is enourmos. Or the waveclear Champs like Viktor and Anivia have.

I think Mages are the most versatile role, so its hard to say.

Champs like Annie and Heimer definetly fall off, or AP Karma falls off really hard.

PrinceOfStorms4 votes

but Mages can do it aswell

AHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA when an ADC right clicks on the mage and chunks them for 50% of their health in one auto, then autos again and gets the kill it's beyond a mage's ability do anything about it.

Blutseuche2 votes

Oh ye, because mages totally dont outrange most ADC's by atleast 300 with their longrange spells and totally dont chunk them for 60% of their Hp, right?

Jmman2 votes

I can honestly say late game all my spell but crows as fiddle are out ranged by melee. It sucks beings rooting and melee downed in 2 -3 auto and not being able to fear / drain.

Blutseuche3 votes

Fiddlesticks is a low range mage, lol.

I say fiddles doesn't

you say fiddle is low range mage..

ANd I get down votes... I just gave you a fing example and you down vote me. yea I forgot its all about the AD.

Blutseuche1 votes

Oh, ok then i use your example.

Urgot is a marksman. He has 350 Range or so.

He gets outranged by many melee abilities.

Melee outrange Marksman because Urgot is a Marksman.

Your logic.

Oh, ok then i use your example.

Urgot is a marksman. He has 350 Range or so.

Melee outrange Marksman because Urgot is a Marksman.

Your logic.

This is what they call a straw man argument. See By saying what you did you are saying that fiddle isn't a mage. But rather a bruiser with farther than normal range, support, or something else. Fiddle is squishy, like a mage. Urgot is not like a bruiser. I could go one and on but it doesn't really matter does it?

Blutseuche1 votes

Urgot is close to a bruiser, but ok.

Fiddle is a mage with low range, just as intended. Using him as an example is what i call a straw argument. But thats surely above your level.

Jmman1 votes

lol you don't know what "straw man" argument is. Bruiser =/= adc. Mage = Mage.

Don't get mad because your wrong. Oh fiddles range is just 50 to 100 less than most mages. So what is saying this his 10 to 20% different range makes him "low range" Since you don't play fiddle his crows will hit but they Nerf his fear range a few seasons ago. this mad it less than the adc AA range. But I sure you knew that. If only had had that range back he could be included in your "cool cat mage group"

Dude you really don't be missing school. You knowledge and critical thinking skills are hurting

Blutseuche1 votes

20% less range makes him low Range.

Oh, so Teemo is a high range Marksman now, like Caitlyn? I mean, its only 125 Range, not really much.

After your logic now, Teemo is a High Range Marksman, let me tell this the people in my CS, when they want to pick Cait.

Jmman1 votes

ROFL do you even read what you type. No your logic would say he is a High range.

Mine should be he can be play a Marksman but would be Low Range. But he can also be played as an On-hit champ or Mage depending on how you build him.

Can't wait for the next idiotic thing you type. I laugh so loud at my desk when I read this my co-worker started laughing. She asked if you were a bronzy.

Blutseuche1 votes

I wont bother explaining, you dont seem to understand at all.

PrinceOfStorms5 votes

The only mages that outrange ADC autoattacks have their long range spells in skillshots. If you're seriously going to equate a skillshot with a point click AA that does just as much if not more damage, then you're incorrigible.

Mizaya1 votes

Who are we talking about, Jhin? In what world does any other ADC 2 shot a mage. C'mon man, just be real, you can even give me a full build that you think will 2-shot and I'll literally do the calculations right now.

Jmman1 votes

Its once they get all item 3094 item 3087 at max build they can crit other things with there autos. Then they have such fast attack speeds they get 3 to 4 shots off in 1 to 2 secs and delete all there hp. item 3087 I have seen 500 to 800 crits. and AA crit from a full build adc will do 500 to 800 damage on top of that. that is 1500 to 2400 damage in 2 AA. I'm not using exctact numbers because of time. But as a support main I see it happen all the time. For both sides. Its like the adc is a scrub support or death machine. There is no middle ground.

problem is the crit and then proc things can crit.

Mizaya1 votes

So this is the kind of build I'd have on a Tristana late game: item 3087 item 3094 item 3031 item 3072 item 3036 item 3026 item 2140

That's +270 AD. Add that to the 98 base AD of trist, typical runes, masteries and you have 376.5 total AD. Now let's say you crit twice. The first crit will be energized by Rfc and shiv, dealing 941.25 physical damage + 520 magic damage pre-mitigation.

Now what's your typical mage, Orianna? She'll take about 64% of the physical damage based on base armor, which is roughly 600 damage, and 365 magical damage based on base MR and normal runes. Orianna with your usual runes has 2075 HP at lvl 18. And since the 2nd crit isn't energized, it only does the physical damage. So that's 1565 damage from the two crits. So it would take 3 crits to kill her, which has a 50% chance of happening as the build has 80% crit. With Zhonyas it would probably take 4 crits in a row.

I'd also like to run the numbers for whether or not Orianna Q-R-W would kill the Trist, but don't really have the time for it right now.

Jmman1 votes

so 4 shoots and what is your attack speed? 2 hits a Sec? 80% crit. 50% chance on 2 secs kill, 25% chance they live at 25%, 25% change they live with 50% . Using only autos?

But you are saying you can jump in auto, auto, ult and kill some. In 1 sec? Then jump refresh to get out. Sounds like an assassin instead of an adc.

We can even use your numbers. Its still too strong. You can jump AA ult away and leave them under 1/4. One Carry out of the fight in .5 sec. The problem isn't the damage. its the damage with resist/lifestealing, rez armor and mobility.

Run the numbers on Orianna. But you can dodge her things. how do you dodge an Auto. Why are you comparing Auto damage to skill shot damage and saying SEEEEE is does do 20% more damage to kill me. Once the mage cast there spells they are sitting on their keyboard for 5 secs or some. In that time you could have killed 2 more champs. this isn't event looking at your skills just autos.

edit: math is correct

Mizaya1 votes

1.36 base AS, 2.09 with Q active. And in most fights you'll be hitting the tank, as in any high level game it's hard to find an opportunity to hit priority targets as the ADC without getting instantly blown up. Jumping offensively before the fight is won is usually suicide.

As for Orianna, it's more complicated than skillshot vs auto. Orianna's ball is going to sit where it zones Trist away in a fight between them. And if she jumps in it's quite easy to then hit her with all your skillshots. Her combo with a full build will deal 2262 damage, plus 180 from ludens, plus 266 from thunderlords, adding up to 2708 magic damage. Factoring in resists, that is roughly 2276 damage. Which would easily kill a Tristana.

BTW, RFC can't crit and shiv deals 160 magic damage, critting for 400.

Jmman1 votes

Your math was spot on.

But its you are going to include Orianna's spells should you also include Tristina for max damage to champs?

but we are at 2276 for all 4 spells vs 1565 two AA.

tristina jump auto auto ult will do and extra 760. and its about the same damage. Just one is waiting on CD while the other is Autoing. That is kinda the issue. they have the same burst in the same time. 2 to 3 secs. But one still have a lot of damage through auto's vs waiting on CD. its the AP vs AD problem in a nutshell

Mizaya1 votes

No, it deals 65% more damage to minions.

Jmman1 votes

yea I corrected it. I knew it was 65% something but I changed to say you were correct.

Blåbæret2 votes

Items don't have enough AP anymore. Mages deal 0 damage to tanks and teams who know how to build MR. Orianna is only good because of her ability to stay relevant through utility. Syndra is just overtuned.

Mizaya1 votes

Azir Cassiopeia Karthus Malzahar Orianna Veigar Viktor Vladimir don't fall off.

BobaFlautist1 votes

It's the natural result of Riot trying to find a way for supports to scale into the late game.

Midgame your rotation does 600 aoe damage and 500 additional single target damage and they put a 150 damage shield on their adc.

Late game mages do 750 aoe damage and another 900 single target and supports shield for 600 aoe and another 600 on their adc along with the adc having more mr, probably some dr from Knight's vow, and the lifesteal to heal back to full in 5s through grievous wounds.

Given that they also get more movespeed, peel, and body blocking from their allies allowing them to more easily avoid your damage in the first place, and the fact that they can three-hit you if you get in their auto-range, it's no big surprise that mages feel less impactful late game than mid game.

They're still really valuable in a teamfight when played correctly, though. Not quote hut almost essential.

Erockandroll1 votes

Mages tend to have a pretty linear scaling, due to the fact that their abilities scale on like on stat, AP. Compared to most ADC's who DPS multiplies by AD, AS, and Crit chance.

Also with Tanks back in the meta, it's difficult for a Mage to out right kill a Tank, (Even with Void staff) Unless they are a battle mage with a decent amount of DPS. Otherwise, your main focus needs to be on the glass cannons.
