Riot had this game just right around beginning of season 3

This game was near perfect at that point.

Everyone was fairly balanced, proper counterplay was in order. All items were cool, and items that were even more broken than now were ok because you could do things to outplay or counter it.

But then you started making more and more resourceless champions, champions with increasingly less and less flaws in their kit. Becoming near perfect.

Jayce is a pretty big marker for a start. Nobody in the game had as many perks and less downsides as he did. People were basic and had one task and one objective, then you started making "Flexible" champions that could do more than one task, and BETTER than anyone else. Everyone had one job, then someone came in with three jobs, doing them at 110%. Whiping out champ after champ.

Before that you were concerned about having a good game and a nice community, not "OH WHAT WILL MAKE US THE MOST DOLLA DOLLA BILLLSSSSSS" and you actually LISTENED to us instead of acting like you know more about what we know then we ourselves do. Which you don't.

Then you stop showcasing community creations because it doesn't make you money or publicity, then you stopped releasing content AT ALL almost ENTIRELY, then removed the few fun things out of the game we actually LIKED, and what we still managed to cling onto, you ruined that too.

No one had overloaded kits, now almost every modernly released champion has 6 or 7 things that's tacked on for no apparent reason and can perform adequately WITHOUT them.

Then you couldn't get over your arrogant creations, once people finally evolved and made a way to play against your creations, you took those things out.

Oh ADC's are going hard? Nerf all armor and health items and nerf randuins.

Oh our broken mages are getting stronger? Remove force of nature.

Oh junglers and supports are keeping up in gold with the rest of the lanes? Remove Philo stone and heart of gold.

Now this game is, well, corrupt. Driven by greed and arrogance.

The sad part is, is no other game has yet to grasp the perfect game you had at the time. Something easy to grasp, but the game changes once you know more about it, you can micromanage or macromanage, and the entire world is in your hands because the choices YOU make can determine the outcome of a game.

But now new players are struggling harder than ever before to play the game with the crap you call balance coming out, and games are determined by which team has the mindless feeder.

I keep coming back to this game, with a sliver of hope that it may change someday. But deep down I know that it wont, and I wish I could find something the same.

So my final note to riot games:

The majority of you fucking suck and are a sellout. A company has the right to make money, but you don't need to step on peoples dreams and ideas to do so, while giving them the middle finger saying that your arrogant self righteous bullshit mind knows better than we do. The remainder of the good people either left or sold out and didn't speak up, you suck too. I truly wish your company would go bankrupt and stops making the game and the few good employees left find a better job than they have now.

Thinks were not balanced at any point of season 3...

Take a look at the patch notes from back then if you want evidence, which is far better than your memory it seems.

lol Shen Olaf and Sona up there with the gods... good times :

Provided shen isn't against a ranged laner he does well.

But all tanks die absurdly quickly anyway

Rengar and Kha were released in Season 2, lol

Jayce and rengar single handedly ruined the game and the top lane meta for the end of season 2. Including worlds.

Jayce literally had no counters.

Rengar was buggy and everyone built him ap and destroyed, he got nerfed and bug fixed, people built him assassin, he got nerfed, people built him tank, he got nerfed again. In season 3 he went into the jungle and then got nerfed, people found out how to triple q, he got nerfed. Think I am missing one nerf cycle but you get the point.

Season 2 was kind of a anomaly because people were still figuring out the best way to play. Also the pen differences allowed tanks to live longer with a much lower health total. Lack of items made entire classes obsolete (like ad assassins), and to top it off riot was releasing either horrid or game breaking champs every 2 weeks. It was a fun season but no where near balanced. end of season 2 through season 3 was a very volatile time for league.

YOU BEEN WARNED2 votes

imo the stage you're talking about is after Darius release ( mid season 2? ) or after Diana release/nerf.

Both of which make sense but Jayce was indeed released, maybe people didn't have interest in him back then ( which is what I remember )

And I agree the game was nearly perfect, the coming patches only downgraded the game from there...

Wait are you serious? I've been playing since Open Beta and this is complete 100% BS. People thought the balance was bad back then too. Every complained just as they do now.

There was pretty strong disparity in champion power then too, don't talk about things you clearly don't remember correctly.

Am I the onlyone who can't stand hearing that? If they wanted to milk money out of us. They would look like Nexon. Not like the riot we have now. I disagree with their current direction, with a lot of their design choices of the past years. But get your head out of your arse and realize that

  • Riot might be inconsistent,
  • they might not have control of their game,
  • they might not be really inefficient with their money,
  • they might be disorganized,
  • they might have some stupid view of the game,
  • some people might indeed be greedy and in it for the money.

But they aren't evil, they aren't dedicated on milking every bit of dollars out of you and they actually want to make a good game.

I'm going to finish reading because I agree with some of your points I think. But I had to rage against that particular paragraph.

The thing that makes me think money is all they care about, is the spot that their things like the client and servers are in. Their client has pretty much been fucked since the last patch. That is a pretty long time without trying a fix on it. I get worse ping now then when I started to play this game. If they cared about us, they would probably put some of the millions that they company takes in towards an attempt to do something about the servers. I don't even care if they get an east coast server or not, but just make an honest attempt to fix the problem. Until then, I can only say that Riot is just like any other company in business where all they care about is their bottom dollar amounts. I would love to be proved wrong, but seeing where the emphasis as been put since I started playing, I don't see it happening.

On the server, did improve it at few times. It's probably that they can't make the same server run on multiple server without rewriting it all. But they were small when they begun, the code is probably cheap and hard to modify. Anyway, I agree that their servers are... buggy. Either there's a problem in their code (that they can't fix without rewriting everything) or they can't make it work with multiple servers. But saying all they care about is money is just an exageration. if that was the case, there is a lot they could do about it.

They're a company and ultimately, they want to make money. But you sound like every employee at riot is in there for the money. I don't see how you can think that Phreak and Lyte and all the other reds we see on the forum don't like the game. If they were, they probably wouldn't be chatting with us untill midnight on their free time at home. There are a few threads (maybe on the old forum) where the red said he was going to bed. The higher up are probably too greedy tought (there's probably a few pure businessmen who will only say "yes" if you prove them with numbers that it'll be profitable). But you can't say that every one is the same.

SexyTaylorSwift1 votes

Servers have only gone downhill since I have started playing. There hasn't been a time that I remember them trying anything to fix it. A "server maintenance" that did absolutely nothing as servers and the game crashes etc. are higher than they have ever been in my time. Can't say what happened s1 or s2, but I would guess it was better.

I in no way shape or form said that all their employees only work there for the money. I was talking about the company, which is based on the people that actually make decisions. Yes, the workers that post once in a blue moon on the boards (go to "help and support" boards if you want a laugh) probably are not only in it for the money, as is the case with a lot of workers in an area that doesn't typically recruit people who are just looking for a job.

Game was most balanced towards May 2012

After that it went to shit since they released Jayce/Rengar/Diana/Kha'Zix etc

Hibeki1 votes

ditto

Sammystorm1 votes

Season 2 was definitely the most favorable towards bruisers and tanks for sure. That didn't make it balanced. Their were a lot of problems at the time. Although you are correct the release of jayce, rengar, diana, and zyra fucked the game pretty hard. Then in pre-season 3 the insane ratios of Zed and kha'zix fucked the game again.

YOU BEEN WARNED1 votes

Release Diana I remember was scary... After her nerf she's basically the way she is right now, very balanced.

Kha'Zix was damn broken but for some reason people didn't notice or didn't chase after what's broken until a while, he was not abused like crazy similar to what happens to new champions now and so he was nerfed very late.

Rengar had to see worlds first I believe, Jayce wasn't popular.

But you're right, released champions tend to be broken at first. Even supports and unpopular champions like Nami and Syndra; after a while of being mastered they destroy everything and require nerfs. :\

Narasimha3 votes

They made a notable shift in champion design. Instead of having all the power budget focused around one or two abilities, its now more spaced out over the whole kit. I'm not sure why thats a problem to you though.

Also, why are you using 'Jayce' and 'flexible' together? He was literally relegated to top lane and nothing else. Range was too low to try and adc, and he had too many sustain issues in the jungle. Hell, he got a short time mid then was kicked out for being mana starved and outranged.

Hibeki3 votes

I'm using jayce because he does many things too well.

He can siege well, he can long range harass well, and he can all in well, while still maintaining disengage.

Feathermane3 votes

I seem to recall Jax, Orianna and Lee Sin being in the game season 3. So no, no way in hell was the game more balanced.

YOU BEEN WARNED1 votes

Orianna was always imbalanced, you have a grudge on Jax and Lee Sin like most of the community sheep.

Hibeki5 votes

Yes but because of item advantages/disadvantages and the fact that they had counters they were dealable.

Lee Sin was dealable because ward jumping wasn't such a huge problem. You didn't have sightstone and trinket wards werent existent.

Armor was better and being a tank was all around better.

And yet still a lot of the really good champs are really really old, with no real changes to their kits in years, like Jarvan, Janna, Corki, Morgana and a we had to ban Kass for almost year and a half.

There are a lot of champs than sure needs quality changes for sure, but old champs are still really strong because maybe are good in one or two things, but those thing are STRONG enough to compensate everything else.

Kushmeyer23 votes

This opinion is years old for a lot of the really old players. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ai9zG-mQapc

I missed when LoL was a bit more like DotA: everyone was strong and had their place. This goes way back to closed beta and up to just before the season 1 championship. When the season 1 championship happened and Riot put all their efforts into getting people into it I think they and the community changed. I'm guilty of it too. Overnight this thing called a "meta" suddenly happened. Instead of going Taric + Sion botlane (4 second stun level 1 huehue) we now had AD carry + support farming. So many people saw the pro players playing well with specific champions, builds, and rolls and so people emulated them.

Less about the game and more about the company: I used to have a lot of trust in Riot and sympathy when things went wrong, they were a small company during and even after the season 1 championship. Once they had money though they didn't change in the ways I think would benefit players most. They refuse to increase servers/upgrade them as playerbase increases, they nerfed the IP points you get mutiple times. About that, I got over the first time since I still got over 200IP per game instead of over 300IP. However they nerfed it again then so now you rarely get over 200 IP and can very, very easily get under 100. At the same time they have made every new champion broken, 6300IP champs. When servers went to shit we used to get ~300 RP, then a 5 win IP boost, then a 3 win IP boost, and now if the server is down for a week we get nothing. We as players don't deserve those things, however Riot gave it to us anyway - because they used to care. That slipped away though and now they've become rich, bloated with people, and too focused on esports. They used to do community art, events, and cool lore (including a newspaper!) for the world they were creating. Riot isn't anti-consumer. They have balance issues. The balance between customers and money (and the game too but that's different). I feel as if Riot is now developing League of Legends so they can make money, instead of making money so they can develop League of Legends.

I play once in a blue moon nowadays and most of my friends have stopped too. The game is stale for longtimeplayers since as much as the meta has been adjusted and changed - it's never TRULY changed. It's always been variations of the same cut and paste meta we had since the season 1 championship. I also feel bad playing games by companies I dislike. Riot isn't nearly as bad as EA or Ubisoft, but their change of priorities over the years has left me sour and I haven't given them money in over 2 years now.

Riot isn't a bad company, but they're definitely not a good company anymore. They're just a company making a game.

Sammystorm1 votes

Honestly. Every single competitive game has a meta. It just depends on if you pay attention to it.

Reading this brought a little "nostalgia" for lack of a better word. To me, the game died after they completely changed Rengar. He was my favorite "new" champion at the time. When I saw how they completely changed his kit "for the good", I realized Riot was going down a dark path.

A few years later, we have fuck ups like Cassiopeia and the removal of niche items like Executioner's Calling, which was used to counter champions with high sustain (Akalai, WW).

To this day, Taric is my favorite support champion. I absolutely love everything about his entire kit. I'll probably end up leaving LoL if his rework feels like more of a nerf than a buff like they did to Sona and Soraka.

Taric is my favorite champion of all time, followed closely by Darius.

I literally can't play Taric anymore, because he's fucking terrible compared to every other tanky support in the game.

I literally can't play Darius anymore, because he's been nerfed to hell and back and Ranged tops are the norm now, and Darius gets shit on by range.

This post, even if it's not correct in its entirety, reminds me why I like this game and why I fucking HATE it right now. It used to be fun and enjoyable and now it fucking sucks unless you're a FotM abusing scumbag that only plays for that sweet sweet LP. Playing casually is just fucking painful.

Sammystorm2 votes

Usually I see posts like this and I think 2 things have happened to you. One: you have gotten better making the game less enjoyable because you know strengths and weakness etc. Two: When you weren't as good the game breaking fotm champs weren't as big of a deal and were probably different then what you were playing against so they didn't bother you making the game feel more balanced. This game has never been balanced and never will. I almost quit when ad assassins became huge because I felt like my main anivia was unplayable. I felt that way because so much had changed. There is the problem, change. It makes people uncomfortable and it might change things you like into things you like less. However some people like the new stuff and some people don't.

To be fair, tell me again that Irelia doesn't have an overloaded kit?

And mobas always have been dedicated by who had the greatest feeder. Sorry but that's the nature of the game. You are right that riot made it so team coordination is more important now. But feeders always made your lose. Want proof?

Look at Dota (original, 2 or any other clone of the original formula) : Dota has heroes that can pretty much win the game by themselves. Yet a single feeder/uncooperative player can cost you the game. Just look at what people say about dota solo-queue. SPOILER ALERT : it's the same as we say about League. Sometimes even worse!

Sammystorm1 votes

Wait part of your argument was saying mages were broken so they removed FoN. However FoN was removed in preseason 3. Philo and HoG were also removed in preseason 3. you also claim that season 3 was the best season. So your argument confuses me. Is or isn't season 3 the best for you? Also Jayce broke the game in season 2 as did Zyra and rengar. Then riot introduced new ad itemization and then zed, lee sin, kha, renger broke the game. I think you are a bit nostalgic. Unless you like ad assassins then yes that was probably the best season for them.

Hibeki1 votes

I did not claim season 3 was the best season, I said beginning, around the preseason.

Kha'zix and rengar may have existed, but since there werent as many FOTM that had to a must ban you could ban those two.

I liked end season 2, and very beginning season three before it all went to shit.

Sammystorm1 votes

I understand. However in late season 2 things were fucked. Games were decided by who picked jayce or rengar. AoE team comps were the only viable way to play because of how tanky people could get. Zyra fucked the game. Rengar broke it 3 times in season 2 and he was released late into the season. In preseason it was league of cleavers then league of warmogs and ad assassins were horrible over powered because they had insane ratios to compensate for their shit items in season 2. Most assassins were nerfed before the first patch of season 3 went live.

Now you could have liked that season but it was far from balanced. Hell I enjoyed that season the most so far. However we need to keep the nostalgia and bias out of our discussions of how balanced the season was.

Downfall1 votes

If they left it how it was, without releasing new champions with interesting new concepts and continuing to make changes to items, the map, everything, the player-base would drop dramatically. Change keeps people here. They want to try teh new things, and master them.
