It had some pretty major flaws imo;

  1. Team Captains: One player was allowed to choose who gets invited. This leads to frequently declining players that aren't bringing a popular champion for the Meta.

  2. Champions are picked before queuing: In addition to allowing #1, this means you can't adjust your team comp at all.

  3. No autofill: Yeah everybody hates autofill, but because of the above issues the queue times were absolutely horrid. It's why we have autofill now.

Now I'm not saying "TB was toxic and should not come back", I'm saying it had its flaws and we can fix them. I believe the solution is to change Blind Pick;

  1. Within the new Blind Pick, players queue for 1-4 roles.

  2. When they are accepted into a group, it's Blind Pick as usual but your lane is already assigned.

  3. The threshold for autofilling can be higher and the MMR range can be lower so enable relatively decent queue times.

I think this would solve all the problems with Blind Pick while also providing people with a real alternative to Draft Pick and bringing back Team Builder.

I think the appeal of team builder was that you always got your role. It was nice to know that if I was willing to wait I would eventually get mid Kayle. (I was more than happy to wait 15 minutes if meant I got to play the game the way I wanted to)

Getting autofilled is just frustrating. You wait 5 minutes or longer to just end up as support. I wouldn't mind if it wasn't always support but short of Riot releasing supports every two months that isn't going to happen. Every other role is reasonably well liked but Support is despised by a large portion of the community (Hence why you were always looking for one in teambuilder). I personally think they need to do a large overhaul on supports to give the role either real carry potential or an actual fantasy because at current it doesn't have it.

Yep! This.

Hi!

So the main issues with support at the moment are these:

  1. No one actually likes playing a supportive champion. Most people want to be the stars, and even with epic playmaking some supports are capable of, it's the pentakills that get the highlights. A truly unbelievable Thresh will get highlights, but have you ever seen a highlight reel of Morgana Qs? Of Leona dives/lockdowns? Of Janna peel?
  2. We get no resources (gold + xp). Seriously, we're dirt-poor all game. Some supports, while ahead, won't have fourth item by the time everyone else is full build. I can dominate and support-carry hard and I'll still rarely be above more than one other person on my team at gg.
  3. Despite getting no gold, we have to blow a usually ~half an item of our already-sparse gold (over half of which is early-game money, in the part of the game where we have the most personal power and where being able to get an item advantage is most likely to let us snowball) on vision. Meanwhile, no one else in the team bothers to use trinket wards. You have no idea how frustrating that is! Don't misunderstand - I love the vision game. It's like a little side-war of macro zone control where sneakiness and mind games matter. Consequentially, I'd actually love to be able to viably build SS or otherwise pay for more wards in other roles, but the high cost, terrible stats, and item slot usage make it completely non-viable for anyone who expects to be personally relevant late-game. 3A. Removed! Riot fixed this one and I didn't edit it out of the standard list. Woops! Thanks to Sugar Momma down there for pointing out that oversight. Please do not kill wards your support scans out. It's one of our very few ways of being rewarded for all the work we put into the vision game, and it partially (only a tiny bit) reimburses the money we blow on red wards and the xp we lose while warding and roaming.
  4. Outside of general game experience, the skills you acquire are not applicable in any other position. Yeah, maybe you'll get better at harassing, landing skill shots, and watching the map, and you'll definitely get better at warding, but you get no experience last-hitting, you get very little experience with wave control unless you play with a duo laner, your roaming experience actually hurts your roaming ability elsewhere (since the prereqs for roaming as a support and roaming as anyone else are unrelated), and most of the champions you can play are not useful anywhere else.
  5. That last bit actually brings me to another point: With the exclusion of Lulu and Karma, Support-style champions are not allowed to play outside of the support bot lane role. I don't just mean complaints about off-meta, but balance too. Remember when Janna mid became useful, so her Q was immediately nerfed hard so she couldn't clear any more? Rakan's whole thing is that they were desperately trying to make a support who couldn't go elsewhere for any reason. This not only makes your experience as those Support champions useless elsewhere, but it also means that you're discouraged from playing Supportive champions at all. After all, if the only place you're allowed to play them is in the most starved, least-popular role in the game, why bother? This means that few people play the champs they might otherwise decide they want to play into the duo lane.
  6. Until recently (and this is such a wonderful change), we don't get nice things. For the longest time, our itemization was about making us into walking piles of actives with no real personal benefit. The new Athene's is changing that for Enchanters to a small extent, which is very nice. I only hope that continues to be a goal.
  7. Our only carry potential - outside of Brand or Zyra support or something like that - revolves around feeding our team. Even after dominating in lane, ideally we move to gank other lanes once the ADC's snowball gets going. That means we get the first few kills, then go struggle vs. a fed Zed half a map over while the ADC gets ever more resources, kills, and glory. Our best hope is to force-feed our team, then put the enemies in such a staggeringly-terrible position that even the stupidest of teams hopefully can't throw hard enough to lose. Don't get me wrong, that is real carry potential of a sort, but it's not reliable, and requires us to do everything perfectly and often be very far ahead... which, as I've mentioned, is harder for a support to manage.
  8. There's other stuff, but I'm tired of typing and these are the most important ones.

I'm not sure how to fix most of these, but a start would be to give us more gold and let Supportive champs go to other lanes. Break the ADC/support meta! Just make it a duo bot, with one farming hard and another acquiring gold in some other way. I'm totally okay with ADC/bruiser or ADC/AP carry being a thing if us Support-style players are allowed to do our thing elsewhere. That way, Support items could be floated up in both price and value. At the moment, their low price (for our limited gold) means that they can only be of limited value, lest people with more gold exploit their relative efficiency. Another good option is to disconnect the support role from the task of exclusive warding. Let me ward more in other lanes! Don't make the support solely bear the burden for most of the team's vision costs, especially not when we have to buy a t2 item for it instead of an item spike (like everyone else gets) at the one part of the game where we have an opportunity to snowball.

Then, give us more public recognition of our contributions. I like the ward scores and CC scores a lot, but they're tiny, incredibly easy to miss stats that few below high elo bother to pay attention to. I don't need to be celebrated all the time, but when I pull off something truly incredible, I'd love the game to acknowledge it publicly and loudly. Right now, if I want glory, if I want hard carry potential, I'm generally expected to play a damage carry and go for pentakills. No idea how to execute this, mind. A "Pentassist" like some have recommended is a fairly useless contribution. Not only could I get one just by pressing Locket or Karma R-E in a winning teamfight -> Ace, but everyone in a given teamfight would get one, and how do you acknowledge that?

Anyways. There's some of the issues. I have some ideas to solve some of them, and no clue how to solve others. You're def. right that we need a major overhaul of the role on a very basic level. As it is, why play support?

Sugar Momma1 votes

As to your 3A point you do realize it is BETTER for an ally to kill wards you scan as you both receive gold for it?

Morgan le Fey2 votes

Woops, sorry about that. Old complaint snuck in there. I should've cut that one out. Thanks for pointing that out! I actually really love how Riot handled that one.

Godspeed Savitar3 votes

A lot of people dodge when they get autofill, so that makes up for the time spent in longer queues.

No difference, except the fact now you have to play a role you dislike half the time.

Not that I'm complaining, I can play anything, aside from ADC.

Elikain12 votes

I remember my one game in TB where i picked Morde mid. I was sitting in queue for 2 hours (no freaking joke) and was declined multiple times. The queue time was so freaking long that at one point, the matchmaker didn't find me a game after some longer time period and since i was doing other stuff on my computer, I ACTUALLY FORGOT I WAS IN THE GAME.

The moment someone did accept me, the rest of the teammates, once taking a look at our team comp were just leaving as no one would want to play with a Morde mid anyway. I never got to play that Morde game. And i was a player who played TB exclusively but off meta champs were absolutely not allowed in there.

And since i was a support main at the time (still are), you can bet your ass that my position was guaranteed to be a part of a team really fast as very few people would want to play supports anyway. So yea, TB experience, although fun, was flawed which i believe is now fixed with role selection.

That's probably because you queued as mid. I did all kinds of off meta supports (pretty much any conceivable mid pick), and I was accepted because they didn't want to wait for another support. Mid lane was one of the most popular.

I had a similar experience, I tried some really gimmicky shit like Sup Cait and because they needed that slot they were down to try at least. I couldn't see it working as easily for mid.

I sat in queue for 1 hour as Ezreal mid. Got kicked multiple times because they thought Ez mid was weak (this was a week or two before Mid Ez was the flavour of the month). Eventually I got into a game and proceeded to carry (along with our Vayne) a 4v5 to victory. People are way too quick to dismiss champions that aren't super meta. Morde mid isn't even strange, if it was like Lux Jungle I could understand them not wanting it.

I don't think it had flaws, it had tradeoffs.

Team Captains: One player was allowed to choose who gets invited. This leads to frequently declining players that aren't bringing a popular champion for the Meta.

It can be changed to a vote system. One of the powers of teambuilder was that it could be used to craft team comps. Off meta picks (almost by definition) only fit into certain team comps, and teambuilder is a better tool for this anyway.

Champions are picked before queuing: In addition to allowing #1, this means you can't adjust your team comp at all.

There's no reason it couldn't be switched to a pick intent system, then once you look like you have a comp you're comfortable with go into the draft system. It doesn't have to go into the draft system though, you could make it so that you pick intent your champ then it goes into blind picks.

No autofill: Yeah everybody hates autofill, but because of the above issues the queue times were absolutely horrid. It's why we have autofill now.

But that was the tradeoff for playing the champ, role, and comp you wanted. People hate autofill, and teambuilder solved this by letting you chose between queue times and actually playing what you wanted. I played teambuilder almost exclusively while i could, and i never found queue times to be horrid.

It had tradeoffs, but the experience was way better. Being able to cull the toxic people out of your games before they even began was huge. Like unspeakably, i can't overstate how important this was to my enjoyment of the game, HUGE. Teambuilder experience was 11/10. Drafts now is maybe 6.5/10. I used to play this game 5-6 hours every single night, now i play maybe 10% of that, and its because it is a straight up worse experience for not having teambuilder.

I don't give a damn about its flaws, I just need it back. I can't play champions I want especially new champions/reworks because new=must ban. :/

This'd be more acceptable if this wasn't such a very long game, but often people only have time for 1-2 games at a time. Less, down in low elo (where most people are), where half our games are basically just catch. All that throwing = longer games = fewer games = less time to play what you actually want to play.

RK N0va6 votes

I don't. Waiting in lobby for 30+ min only for a support to come in, take one look at the player picks, and then leave, doesn't exactly give me positive memories.

korg0233 votes

It was quite opposite for me,i never waited for 30+min and even if it took 10 min wait it was worth cause i got position i wanted and team i feel comfortable playing with. Would take that anytime over random autofill/secondary position bullshit. Id rather like you wait like you said 30+mins to play exact position and teamcomp/champ i want then wait shorter and play autofill/ or get autofilled teammate to ruin my game experience.

Darius Taric3 votes

For teambuilder advocates, that is the desired outcome. We wait as long as it takes, and get to play what we want, and everyone is happy. In a perfect world, we would have draft, which you would continue playing thus making you unaffected by it's reintroduction, and teambuilder which we would play. As an added bonus, all the people who dodge draft and make you go through multiple rounds would go to teambuilder, because they're the people who want to hand-pick the team/play a specific champ/role, and are willing to wait longer, evidenced by their dodge.

And of course, the whole idea is that you multitask during queue instead of staring at the lobby.

Sukishoo4 votes

I'd love it if they put it in the game in place of Blind. It was already blind, but it at least allowed us to get a role that we 100% wanted and it would be a much better system to have in place instead of blind.

DrCyanide3 votes

I frequently play Blind Pick, and I have to say Teambuilder always felt like a worse version of Blind Pick to me.

Yeah, you didn't have to call roles, but you didn't get to change your pick to better suit the team, you had to wait for people to not leave a lobby as soon as they got there, you had to specify exactly what role you wanted in each lane (couldn't accept Tank, Fighter, Assassin, Marksman or Mage top, had to pick one and ignore the rest).... and after all of that, it somehow always managed to put you in a mirror matchup when you were learning a champion, except the other guy played the champion enough to completely dumpster you all game long.

I look at that experience and can't help but think it was designed for only a select few.

it aint comin back no matter how much whining happens

The main reason I hated team builder was the whole idea of one person deciding what champion they want on the team and if you didn't pick champions they deemed to be meta. One tricks and out of meta mains got isolated and neglected.

The Ecdysiast1 votes

Well, most people who played it didn't know or care what's meta. Just what looked like a reasonable pick.

We didn't kick out the Nunu jungles, we kicked the Teemo supports. And unfortunately a lot of jackasses flooded the Support pool with Teemo.

Darius Taric1 votes

I played Volibear Mid during teambuilder. I got to play it in a reasonable amount of time almost every time I queued. The other option, that I used often, was to be the team captain. Then the pessimistic person leaves, instead of removing you from the team, and you carry on creating your team. Teambuilder was incredible, and would make my life much easier. Real sick of getting to play what I want 1 time every 4 games due to autofill, bans, dodges, and even my team banning my champ. Teambuilder prevented ALL OF THESE THINGS.

Darius Taric2 votes

I really loved teambuilder. I like playing off-meta stuff, keeping the opponents on their toes, try to find new ways to use champs. Teambuilder prevented my desired champ getting taken, my role getting taken, the other team banning my pick, people dodging, and even my team banning my pick - which happens about daily, unfortunately. In exchange for those things, we unite two queues, and lower queue times, neither of which I care about. I would prefer to multitask for 40 minutes while getting the game I want instead of playing a game I don't want (autofill) 20 minutes sooner via the current draft system. Draft brings out the worst in this game, in my eyes. Limitation, interference, role ping pong, friendly-fire bans, lengthy fanfare draft process, a ton of issues all in the name of uniting queues and lowering queue times, but in reality serving to push players into the competitive scene because that's where riot makes their money. League is all about pretending you're a pro player now, who can play all champs and all roles, and play a perfect game when you get stuck in your worst role with your only viable champ banned/picked or your team acts like children because they can make new accounts IF they get banned. It's so much less appealing now and I regret the fact that I've poured so much time and money into this game.

I'd pay monthly for teambuilder, without hesitation. A subscription-based, mostly adult, less likely to troll teambuilder environment is pretty much my fantasy.

If I wanted to play ranked I would just play ranked. Let the rest of us play the game we want to play.

I know it ain't coming back. Neverthelesss, I miss the ability to decide (as captain) which PLAYERs (NOT which Champions) I want in my team.

You usually can tell a lot about a player from his summoner name: Your name is xXNoobKillerXx? Well, you defenitely won't be in my team...! Your name is Cun7 Suck3r? Nope, not happening.

And magically Teambuilder season was the one I experienced the least amount of toxicity and negativity in my games, and the one were my friendlist filled with the most cool people I ever met ingame. Welp,... those days are gone. If Rito decides to put 12-year old assholes in my game then I'm the one who has to swallow that pill or dodge.
