Let's talk about Malzahar

First of all, I love Malz. When Zed, Yasuo, Kha, Kat, and Akali are running amok in Mid who are you going to lock in? Malzahar. When Nasus, Malphite, Darius, Renekton, and Mundo are harassing your carry who's going to stop them in their tracks? Malzahar. The absolute best thing about Malzahar is the feeling impending doom he brings to any champions he faces, no matter if they're assassins or tanks.

Back in golden age of WoW my main was an Affliction Warlock. Malzahar is the only champion in this game that gives me that same sort of playstyle: death by attrition. When Malzahar tosses his E on you, for the next four seconds all you can do is watch it widdle away at your health bar unless you do something quick to shield or heal yourself. If Malzahar throws his W down and ults you, you have to sit there helplessly and watch your health melt away unless your teammates come to rescue you. This is Malzahar in a nut shell - he is the prophet of your death. If there's only one thing I could ask Riot it's to keep this overall core identity in mind while looking into Malz. However I do understand that helplessly watching yourself die with no options to stop it...might be frustrating and not the easiest gameplay style to balance.

Malz - More game health issues than anything else. Counterplay's not great in particular, with Malz needing to just click on you and kill you given his squishiness, immobility, lack of reach, vulnerability to item system counters. Has a lot of distinctive stuff going on though.

Keep in mind that Malzahar's counter is his predictability. It's a mind game; it's a chess match. You know what's coming so you know what steps to take to prevent/avoid it. If you want to create more chances for counterplay (outside of items) I would focus on this aspect. Make his E more predictable on where it'll bounce. You could create a sort of "mark" in his kit, like Nidalee, that will then allow Malzahar to suppress them. That way it keeps the whole impending doom aspect of Malzahar in tact and makes his opponent think "Okay, I let him mark me and stuck around for him to ult me. I f'ed up."

Overall I would say his Q could be pretty different and the way his voidlings work could change, but what really makes up the core of his gameplay is his E, W, and R and the interaction of how his opponent can try to avoid them. If you can't avoid them, well...

I know that feel bro... I have also been main affliction warlock and truly wanting to get radical changes on Malzahar seems absurd He's fine now, hes predictable and pretty squishy (self-cc .... ), but ppl dont know to buy a QSS and then Q - Q .... i hope they dont change this peculiar champion and make it like the rest, much less op

Yeah I'm hoping they do some quality of life changes like fixing his auto attack animation, but for the most part leave him as is

The impression I've gotten from Riot regarding their 'game health' stance on Malz is that too much of his power is bound up in his Ult. It's too binary. If you get caught out you're hosed. If you buy QSS, Malz is hosed. And that's not even considering how big of a chunk of his total AP ratio and base damage is in his R.

I think we can expect that Riot will be moving power elsewhere. Possibly by moving Nether Grasp off his R and nerfing its damage/duration accordingly. Almost certainly by giving his Voidlings some kind of AP scaling.

Personally, I would favor leaving his Passive alone completely. Most AP Malz mains play him for his cool spells. Most AD Malz mains play him for his cool minions. Homogenizing and watering down those two play styles wouldn't make anyone happy.

as someone who doesn't play malz and hates him. something needs to be done. buy a item 3140 or get rekt is not a healthy play style and he is zero fun to play against. pre 6 he is overall fine and has counter play. his Q hit box is wonky and need some work on clarifying when you will get hit and when you won't, his W is honestly just boring for everyone involved it does hardly any dmg unless you stand in it for full duration do you guys actually like this ability? if so why? i think a much better ability could replace it personally. his E is literal cancer, chemo and all its not a huge problem, but i don't see how a instant targeted dmg over time nuke is really fun for anyone, you can't dodge it and it takes no skill to use. not saying all skills need to be skill shots but some more counterplay/interaction would be better right? then we get to his ult, the pinnacle of anti fun in the game. malzahar click R on you then you just cross your arms and wait for the gray screen. QSS works wonders obviously(like almost too much) but you literally have no options outside of it. if you are an AP champ then you sacrifice an item slot for an other wise useful item to you. if your an AD champ like zed or talon vs malzahar then it builds into a really good item for you and you will pretty much always destroy malzhar and there isn't really anything he can do about since all his power is put into an ability that is pretty much useless against you now. i don't see how this is fun for anyone. have you guys ever played much against malz? cause it seems like you are only thinking from the perspective of the malz player. i don't have any friend thats really play malz that much so i really just don't understand. i just know that when i play a game vs Malzahar and Veigar that i wish i could just DC and play a different game becuase there is no way i'm going to have fun playing against them.

Playing against Malz is similar to playing against other aoe mids - Swain/Brand/Morgana/Viktor - it can be a nightmare in lane . Unless you can push/wave clear just as hard, your tower is definitely going down first.

The good news is that pushing hard opens them up to getting ganked. I can't tell you how many times I've been camped as Malz and mudered over and over because I have no defensive abilities or dashes.

i would have to disagree aside from playing Yasuo or Diana into swain you have a many more options when playing the lane. lets do a comparison. Diana vs Swain is a very hard match-up that is unwinnable for diana 1v1 laneing unless the swain player is a literal trashcan in a chair. the options diana has for this lane are

  1. get ganks(as long as swain doesn't hard counter the jg too) since she can't beat him alone. hugging tower trying to get him to overextend
  2. roam either top or bot and try to pick up kills and/or snowball other lanes.(pretty much opt out of laneing against him)
  3. farm at a distance with your Q's and don't get let him catch you in his snare. and just wait for laning phase to end
  4. rush a item 3165 and get blue buff so that you can nonstop poke him until he eventually gets low enough to kill in one combo or force him to back/burn all his mana healing and miss cs
  5. build a really wonky bruiser AD sustain build with Executioners calling that lets you fight him and possible win but makes it so that you are other wise worthless to the team.(this is almost always a very bad option) these options can all be use together for the most part obviously

the average lane against malzahar with say diana your options are.

  1. get ganks similar to swain she can't really beat him 1v1 letting him push pickgn up whatever farm you can under tower
  2. opt out of laneing against him and roam to help lanes farming when you can
  3. rush Qss this is your only possible option for winning lane without it, you have no chance. this is ok for champs like diana since she has high base dmg rather that scaling dmg. but champs with low base damages will still have no chance of winning Qss just keeps them from dying with zero counter play. these are all your options vs malzahar for the most part. options 1 for both malz and swain being completely out of your control whether they happen or not. so you as a player are only left with 2 real options. laneing against malz is not really an option without Qss for obvious reasons at any time while his ult is up he can kill you with no counter play especially with flash up. poking him also isn't an option since every time you get in range to poke you put yourself exactly where malz wants you and you will never win that way unless malz is played by an actual potato. wonky builds aren't an option either since is doesn't matter whether you're sustain or bust if your suppressed without counter play. jgs do camp malz sometimes but they camp for him much more. his ult is an instant win for any gank you come in making it the easiest gank of your life. ganking him isn't that bad as long as both of you have cc and wait to use it. if only one of you have cc the malz just has to ult the champ with cc and kill them so his ult wont be interrupted usually ending in at least a 1 for 1. if malz is already fed he can get an easy double. when i'm playing jg i always hesitate to gank malz if he is ahead at all do to his ult. he also makes counter ganking a breeze turning a 2v2 into a 1v2 with a click of a button. i'm not saying hes not vulnerable ever or that he's OP. just that his play-style is unhealthy and only fun for the people who play him and like killing people that can't fight back. i've only played him a few times but stopped because i don't like that. the first time i Q-W-E-ulted someone i just felt no satisfaction. landing his Q was this only thing that i had to any effort into, everything else was free(aside for the CDs obviously). i'm sorry for the rant i just don't see people make these points and i really don't know why. am i missing something? is there some kind of counter play to suppression outside of buy Qss that i'm just completely unaware of? or get your team to stop his ult(which isn't real counter play cause your team isn't there in 1v1 lane and even if they are there whether they help you or know how to help you is completely out of your control). i just really want him to have more counter play that makes him both funner to play and funner to play against. if you know of actual counter play that i am completely oblivious to, then pls let me know and i may change my mind on current malz. i just really don't think there is.

Lack of counterplay? Just buy QSS or Zhonyas and Malz becomes almost useless.
