Off-Meta builds are fun and all, but they are supposed to be Off-Meta. [MAGE SUPPORTS]

The fun thing about an Off-Meta build or champ is how weird it is. No one ever expects a banana top lane.

But the issue is with people loving weird things Ziggs ADC for example. Riot lets them happen because people like diversity. But when Ziggs starts getting balanced around Mid AND ADC, it not only makes balancing harder. But have large ramifications as well.

This post isnt about Ziggs ADC though. Its about champs like Brand Annie Malzahar MissFortune and while MF isnt a mage support she still fits the build of an Off-Meta pick becoming Meta.

Riot starts to take Off-Meta into consideration when balancing and they shouldn't. If it is supposed to be an off the wall tactic no one expects, if they consider it, it isnt weird anymore. Because it is popular enough to get attention.

And while Metas can change with Off-Meta strats, they need to CHANGE not just increase. There always have to be a Meta or the game would be physically impossible to balance. And every type of champion should be viable at any time.

Right now though classic supports are getting far FAR outclassed by mages. And Riot is balancing these mages so they can work there, when they arent supposed to.

Mages can still go support, but it shouldnt be expected, ranged champs can still go top but it shouldnt be expected. And no class should hold dominion over many lanes, while one gets none.

What do you think meta means?

If Riven support is good and her best role

Then for that patch she is a meta support. Meta isn't what they should be

But the issue is Rivens best role ISNT support, and say Brands best role ISNT support. He is attempting being balanced for BOTH. Meta is indeed what is strong, but the meta is determined by balancing. And if someones niche pick becomes meta, it isnt off-meta, meaning it is taken into consideration when balancing. And the issue arises when previously Off-Meta things are taken priority over what the champion is known for. It just becomes a clusterfuck of balancing that in the end is GUARANTEED to cause issues.

Say Brand mid is 54% winrate, that is damn high. So nerf him. Now say brand support which is known to be liked is sitting at 49%. A further nerf will make brand support not viable but brand mid is really strong. So the options are either make brand support players unhappy and nerf him, leave him as he is with a high mid winrate making mid players angry, or change him so he works better in both, making brand mains angry that support ruined him.

"Meta" means Most Effective Tactics Available. Mages are proving to be more effective than traditional supports at doing the job of the support. Therefore, they become Meta. They become popular because people see success with them, and obviously people will want to pick champions they can win with. Off-meta playstyles are niche picks meaning the playstyle is only enjoyable or successful by a few players, or the strat only works in few scenarios. If an off-meta playstyle is very effective in a lot of matchups, and the strategy can be replicated by a lot of players, the strat is now part of the meta game. So why are mages botlane? Two reasons, the first is the state of mid lane. Assassins and mobile champions with easy roam potential have an advantage over immobile mages, especially those mages that don't have aoe CC. Immobile mages are also more vulnerable to jungle ganks since they have no escape unless their flash/ghost is up. The support role is attractive to immobile mages like Brand Velkoz Xerath Zyra because they can just use their spells to poke from range without having to worry about conserving mana for csing, and they are safer from ganks because there are 2 people in the lane. The other reason is because traditional supports are reliant on their teammates, cannot carry or do damage on their own. They are not as fun to play, as many support mains would agree, and is further proven by autofill. Autofill is another big reason for offmeta supports gaining popularity. People unfamilar with support forced to play the role.
