Thanks for breaking Maphite

He was already fine and didn't need a buff in any way. Now you're going to end up nerfing him to a state where he's worse than he was before you buffed him. He could potentially be pick or ban, it's hard to say because AP top laners do give him a little trouble. But aside from that, he literally wins every lane vs ADs now.

Sometimes I wonder if the balance team decides on buffs or nerfs just by putting champion portraits on a wall and randomly tossing darts on them, and the darts are labeled either "buff for no reason" or "pretend we nerfed lel"

Does being harder to kill (even if its significantly harder) actually mean he wins lane by default?

If he isn't killing you, he can't really do much besides farm (mostly because outside of his ultimate's brief dash, malphite has no mobility and therefore he can't really overextend without placing himself in danger).

Wouldn't this fall into the same category as other champions who almost never die in lane (Galio for instance VS nearly every AP champion; probably not the best comparison but meh) where while they probably won't die, they can't actually do much on their own?

You're making the assumption that Malphite does no damage which is completely untrue, much the same for Galio. Unless you're building full AP Malphite, you should always be maxing E first, W second. If you're against a champion like Renekton for example, it's now perfectly acceptable to max W first for the passive armor bonus and E second. This does two things:

  1. When you decide to trade with W active, you hit like a truck with auto attacks. And you typically stack armor against ADs as Malph so this makes you impossible to feasibly do any damage to.

  2. This is what many people still forget: his E has armor scaling that does magic damage. While it's not huge, it's still there and his W passive makes his E chunk even harder without having to even use mana to combo with W/E like he used to if he wanted that upfront burst. Maxing W first does take away from the base damage you'd get in E with levels but you are maxing E second and the bonus armor you receive is going to somewhat make up for that. In the end, this makes Malphs mana costs very negligible since he doesn't have to use anything but E to trade with and that does actually do quite a bit of damage over the course of time. Mana costs are the one thing Malph had that gave him a window of vulnerability vs ADs (especially if he uses his passive well). And my example is Renekton vs Malph, we know who scales better into mid and late game.

Malph pretty much won lanes vs AA depedent champions with E max, that just got even stronger with these changes.

Riot also said he's a "one trick pony." That's somewhat true as he ults to intiate and then he sits on your ADC and disrupts them long enough to force them out and zone them or flat out kill them if he's ahead enough. And the power of his ult is so good as clean intiation is hard to come by and it's gamechanging in its own right.

Old Malph, between his Es damage, Sunfire burn and W's bonus AD AAs could solo carriers, he was fine as is. To be honest with you, this is giving him more late game power that he DIDN'T need.

To be perfectly honest, while I don't think Malphite NEEDED the buff (certainly not, he sits at a 50% win rate across all ELO's) I don't think it will break him (at least in terms of him actually tanking and laning VS AD champions); if anything were to break him imo, it would be the 15% AP ratio on his W enhanced autos now, AP Malphite 2good.

Malphite does damage don't get me wrong, but wouldn't most tops just reach the point where they don't really need to worry unless he all-ins them with his ultimate (in which case you have an entirely different issue since lifesteal doesn't help with a quick burst of damage)

After all its not like he can trade too often due to his mana costs (at least not until he gets Frozen Heart).

It is a buff to AP Malph but having a good lane phase with AP Malph is a lot harder than it is to have one with full armor tank Malph.

No, most tops actually can't deal with Malph unless they'd be stacking MR, many of which don't have the luxury of doing and having any decent scaling into late game. Champions like Nasus and Trundle can outsustain him with innate sustain because they have the luxury of being able to rush MR and scale well. But neither scale as well as a teamfighter as Malph.

And his mana costs just got massively buffed. Don't use Q/W. Just E and AA (mostly when your passive is up since you can slow the minions AS and take minimal damage from them along with your passive). And if you suspect mana could be a problem, run flask. Problem solved.

Are you dumb? Malphite's buff was to improve his laning phase and make his role as tank more prominent in the early-mid game stages of the game since hes an anti-AD tank focused on shutting down the AD dps of the enemy.

Besides, Its been less than a day since the patch released. Wait a week or 2 for players to pick him up and play him and THEN determine whether hes broken/OP/weak

Are you dumb? He was already good before this buff. I don't need to wait a week or two weeks or a month, I KNOW this is going to break him vs ADs.

typical rant from a player that likes to complain about changes without having tested them.

Gr8 comeback m8

With your logic, we should just not discuss anything at all. This is what discussion is for, it's just another phase of testing really.

And I'm telling you, he's already good and auto wins vs any AA dependent champion. He also does pretty well vs casters but his downside was he had windows of vulnerability with his W's armor bonus being an active bonus, not passive. So he could actually die to them up until the point where he has 3-4 armor items. Now he can just max W and rush sunfire vs them and it's easy lane/easy life. Do the math yourself, you'll see how huge of a change this is that wasn't needed.

Let's be clear, I'm not a Malph hater. I actually play him quite a bit and I can tell you now he's fine.

I'm just really sad about the fact that AD malphite can no longer be played :(

Sucks to see the offbuild die as well because full AD/Crit Malph was hilarious
