Why does it seem whenever I go on a winning streak...

My teammates get worse rather than my opponents getting better?

I mean, I just don't get it. If I win 5 matches in a row, my MMR should be increasing and I should be getting better opponents and better teammates, right? So why is it whenever I win a few matches, it inevitably comes to a game (or a series of games) where I have teammates that simply have no idea what they're doing and my opponents are just as bad as they always were?

I'm not going to get in to specific examples because I don't want this to be a "oh pity me" and "everyone has bad luck suck it up" post. I literally want to know, why is it that matchmaking works this way?

I understand that you're trying to balance teams and you're seeing that of the people queued for normal draft at that moment I have the highest MMR so you give me the weakest teammates and expect me to carry them. Thing is, that system is broken. If I'm winning, you should be forcing the system to match me such that I'm not the highest MMR on the map. Better than that, if someone is on a win-streak they should be matched such that they're the lowest (or at least bottom 4 of the 10) MMR player in the game. If they're winning because they're actually playing well, they'll perform just fine in that match. If you're winning because you're playing well and then get matched with teammates that are worse than who you were previously with, you can play really well and you're still going to lose.

Yea, carrying is very different from being good at the game.

Keep in mind the first 10 minutes of a solo-q game literally do not matter.

Unless their hypercarry is already 5-0, or their snowball champ is 4-0.

In general though Yes, early leads in solo queue are often squandered. It really depends on the team comp though - if the better teamfight team wins Lane hard odds are the game is over.

First 10 mins of soloq are actually very important. If you get up by 30 cs in 10 mins, you are going to have a fun lane.

But, I completely agree with carrying being very different from being good lol. This is why I hate soloq :/ Tell players what to do, they intentionally do the opposite.

Who cares if you win lane, thats not what decides games.

The enemy laner can TP bot get a double kill and your 30 cs lead doesn't mean jack. Its how u play after lane that separates the good players from the bad. Lane is mainly luck, did you get camped, did u get countered, is your opponent lagging? etc.

It doesn't decide in itself, but having a lead in lane could allow you to help your team much more than if behind.

Yes, they can. You could follow them with your own tele (since it would be warded and you could see them going), and since you are ahead of them, you would probably win the skirmish.

Its how u play after lane that separates the good players from the bad.

Again, if you are ahead you are probably ahead for a reason. You will also be able to use your lead to help your team out. You can have much better objective control if ahead.

Lane is mainly luck, did you get camped, did u get countered

If you got camped, you probably have the advantage. Since you properly warded, you most likely didn't give up any kills off of the camp. Since you were camped, your jungler was then able to win the other lanes.

is your opponent lagging

What? How is this even an argument? Yeah...they lost lane because they are lagging, so they are going to awesome in team fights while lagging.

I understand where you are coming from, but to say the first 10 mins don't matter, just isn't right. I've seen a lot more people win that have started 3/0 than have started 0/3 with a big cs difference.

i have ample amounts of screen shots where I go from 8 game winstreaks to 8 win loss streak if I could find em all and organize it.... it's real annoying

Yea I know exactly what you mean. At some points it feels like some losses no matter how good you play you were destined to lose, and some wins it feels like your team would win even if you fed.

MMR moves pretty slowly from what I understand so a win streak isn't going to change things all that much. That said I really am baffled at the people I see on both teams who supposedly are at my MMR level but are literally clueless in every possible way. Split pushers who don't understand not to split push without any enemies visible on the minimap. Supports who don't buy any support items. The list goes on and on.

Yea I know exactly what you mean. I guess my point is that a win-steak should activate an mmr boost or something which allows you to play with "better" players to determine if you're winning out of luck or because you're legitimately at that higher level of play.

Although I guess that's kind of what promotional series do in ranked and everyone hates them.

The problem is that Riot doesn't seem to have a way of telling how good players actually are, only how good they are at carrying. To me there is a difference, as carrying is a different skill set and works better with certain types of champs.

Yea, anyone with a passive playstyle (I.e. go 0/0/0 in Lane and just out farm your opponent considerably) gets destroyed. Either your teammates get kills and you win hard, or your teammates die and enemies get fed and your extra farm means nothing when they come at you with 6 kills. I learned this a couple months ago and gave up on that strategy even though if my teammates would just not feed I'd carry every game with the farm leads I was consistently establishing.

That wasn't really what I was referring to. I was talking more about snowbally champs who are designed to hard carry versus the rest of the roster which is not really built that way. And by hard carry I mean champs that can regularly manage multikills when fed due to a combination of high aoe damage along with durability or evasion.

Aah I was more focused on the "carrying is a different skillset" and thinking that yes I'd rather work with a team that focuses on limiting losses and making good decisions and capitalizing on opponents mistakes rather than one that tries to get all flashy.

It's very rare for me to see a game where the lanes don't die before ganks come in. I really enjoy the games where first blood is after 9+ minutes and is on a well played gank. Most games are a 1v1 kill at 4 minutes though. It becomes necessary to make risky plays to try to get a solo kill in Lane (which obviously occasionally result in you dying instead) because if you aren't getting those kills then you're at the mercy of whether it's your allies or enemies getting them.

But ya, I also agree that many champions aren't designed to solo carry. Anyone will if they get a huge kill lead but only a few can turn an early 1 or 2 kills in to an endless snowball.

Well the ranking system goes off of average mmr for determining teams therefore a team of one diamond 1 player and 4 bronze 5 players could theoretically be placed against a team of 5 gold 2 players. So in your case perhaps your mmr gains are allowing you to be matched with lower skill players to balance the team mmr.

Happens again.. 4 wins then game with 2 junglers (one trolling) and top afks, then dodged another with 2 junglers, then game with mid kass vs riven where kass dies at 2 min then afks.

Almost makes me just want to lose close Games in a win streak to avoid getting this garbage every time...

Your ELO moves at a steady pace after 70~80ish Ranked games, however your LP gain outpaces your ELO movements pretty easily. 5 Wins might get you into the next tier if your MMR is really high but your ELO is moving at more or less a set pace or win/loss. It'll take quite a big winstreak to start getting people that are noticeably better than people you are already matching with.

I could be wrong about the 70~80 number.

Oh by the way, this happens to me too everytime :D I would go on a win streak and climb then next 10-15 games would be dc/afk/trolls/full bronzes. I think it's probably a universal phenomenon so I don't really care anymore, just gotta deal with it.

ValyrianBlade1 votes

Yea that's likely the problem. I just wish if you were on a win streak the system would start matching you explicitly as the lowest mmr player on the map for a few games to see if you can compete at the higher level.

Nucleophilic atk1 votes

I agree. This is especially apparent in promo matches. When I get into promos, I understand rito wants to see if I can handle the next level, but they do it wrong. I was in my silver promo match, and got matched against 3 mid-high golds. My whole team was silver. Like, if you want to see if I can handle gold, put me against gold with gold teammates. Not just against gold with silver teammates. That makes no sense at all.
