Ap Assassins

I've mained assassin mid laners for a long time now and recently the game has been getting less and less enjoyable with each new season and I don't see anyone talking about it. This is mainly for AP assassin mid/top laners.

Items: There aren't enough items in the game for an AP assassin play style. A lot of AP items give stats like health and mana that as assassins, we do not want. Not enough items are like Deathcap or Spellbinder, that give a lot of AP and some other useful stat for an assassin like Cooldown reduction, Movement speed, Spell Vamp, etc... There are items like Morellonomicon or Ludens Echo that give a good amount of AP, but also have more stats tacked on that drives the price of the item up and make it less impactful on an assassin. This issue is making champions that aren't supposed to be beefy like Fizz and Heimerdinger a lot more tanky in the laning phase due to build components, which kind of defeats the purpose of an assassins early game pressure if they have hundreds of extra hp early on.

Runes Reforged: The new rune system came out almost 2 years ago with the promise of new runes being added, since it was new and unfinished like pre-ordering a game. This is why until now I have been fine with only having 1 rune I can actually use because I was assuming that more would be added. We are over a year of them being out and they really need to change things or revert the runes back to runes/masteries. The only rune you can take as an assassin is electrocute. Predator is very ineffective on almost every champion that isn’t hecarim and the reworked dark harvest is just a worse electrocute on most. Dark Harvest and Predator aren't bad for the game, they are simply very niche rune picks that only apply to a select few champions.

The 3 extra choices under the main component are quite nice and are what I'd like to see for an assassin, but the issue with this is that everyone can build them as a secondary. For example a Lissandra with aftershock to be unkillable also being able to take the assassin extras as a secondary or a Xerath with comet for non stop poke being able to build the same assassin secondaries. I think everyone knows that the middle of the three secondaries for domination are a lot worse than the other two, meaning that the downside of only being able to choose from two categories as a secondary is completely useless. The old rune system was nice because it had so much diversity to compliment your play style. You want to play Vladimir and have good sustain against a poke champion? You could go some spell vamp and and maybe some tankiness. You want to go a leblanc and one shot a bitch? You go full ap and ap scaling and one shot a bitch. Now I feel like I have so much less diversity in how I want to play the game because of the new runes and champions are either really good or really bad depending on how effective they can use a rune.

Champions: With the addition of every new update, the game changes slightly and eventually the game hits the point where some previous things that were good are no longer good. This is true for assassins with all the new introductions like ivern with his constant cc, shields, and heals, characters like Zac, Soraka, and Warwick having cc shoved onto their kit because they are a little on the weaker side. Not to mention the change in the support role where supports aren’t just buying Sightstone every game and are actually able to make money and be a useful tank or shield/healer able to protect and disengage the squishies a lot more, and more importantly, earlier in the game. The point of the adc is to be a monster in the late game being hard to kill due to the supports and others protecting them, but now supports are too effective at protecting the adc meaning that even if they aren't just one shotting everything super early, we as assassins don't have a job to do and get fed off of, which is our win condition most of the time.

I'm interested to hear your guys' opinions and perhaps understand why some things are how they are.

Honestly it is Melee AP Champions in general that just don't have good itemization. Both AP assassins and AP fighters just lack itemization. Riot has neglected it because even if you make AP items melee only Tanks could still abuse them since Riot made the decision to give tanks AP scalings and deal magic damage. Hopefully one day they pull their heads out of their behinds and actually fix these problems, but new items don't make Riot money so instead of fixing underlying issues with the game Riot would rather release new champions to make more money.

Ap items are fine. Ap assassin items are fine because of the raw amount of it you get.

A typical ap assassin build Lichbane Voidstaff Deathcap Sorc shoes Spellbinder Zhonyas.

The amount of power in that build is stupid. And ever item plays off the other items. Not to mention ripping through resistances.

The problem is Assassins don't have items specifically for them. Yes, AD carries can get crit, and armor pen, cleaver, etc. But Assassins also have Lethality, which specializes in hitting targets with low armor and dealing bursts of damage/chasing down opponents or even escaping.

AP assassins, Ahri Akali Fizz Leblanc Kassadin Diana lack meaningful "Burst" items except Gunblade. Spellbinder is pretty close, but its not a very great item to begin with. Mejai's is a gamble, a former member of the Snowball Sisters.

The problem then, is how do you make an AP item thats designed for bursting squishies, that mages don't automatically want too? Oblivion Orb builds into an anti-tank/Life steal item and comes with an unneeded HP component. Gone are the days of Deathfire Grasp.

Melee only requirement, like for Tiamat, would keep the item for AP assassins only.

Not all AP assassins are melee. Ahri Leblanc Nidalee

I mean sure, if you want to remove Le Blanc from the game, which I wouldn't entirely mind. Doubt Riot wants to do that, though. Ahri, too.

I do think you are hugly underplaying triple Magic pen its been used for like what 4 seasons now and still works to one pop adc and other low HP champs whole burning through tanks like Butter i do agree that there should be more paths to take in items but If what your saying is that mages should not be buying dcap ludens or other ap items but should get items like duskblade witch gives only ad and burst +vision Block for roaming then i dont agree at all Like the start of this post Said getting mana and HP witch assasins dont care for means you dont buy it you adept you build to the game your in if u need HP to survive you buy it simple as that either i Dodge Every cc as ahri and go full dmg to take out 2 pll Every fight or u go a bit safer and try and poke them out first

Ap assassins are stronger than mages right now and thats is because they have no weakness. Assassins are supposed to be countered by armor and in ap assassins case, by magic resist. And magic resist does not exsist and it call all be apenetrated by 2 cheap itemsitem 3020 and item 3135. You have spirit visage and adaptive helm? nobody cares, its like you don't. I don't know why everyone complained about zed, kha and rengar while diana and akali have been uncounterable for so fucking long.

diana is a diver and has no escape outside of flash. just position yourself better

I do believe that Magic Penetration is too easily obtained and one or more of the items needs a nerf, but it's not squishies having magic resist that is the problem. First is the fact that adc have phantom dancer and bloodthirster for a total of 950 in shields negating a lot of an assassins burst in pure shields. Second is the fact that they have a lot of life steal, meaning if you burst them down to 25%, they will heal most of it in seconds of fighting, rendering you almost useless as you just blew your burst on them. Third is that most adc have survivability built into their kit with dashes, cc, etc... This doesn't include any of the points I previously stated such as supports being too good at protecting an adc with items like locket, redemption, mikaels, knights vow, zekes, twin shadows.

Honestly looking at the champions who are those melee ap assassins you can't say any of them lack burst with their simple kit and since they have to go in melee they love some extra tankiness that they can obtain. Champs like Fizz and Ekko love the latest rendition of ludens echo since it provides mana a non-existent stat for ap assassins some years back and they also get to stack fast after that some good stats buying a morelos and their boots getting some sweet sweets magic pen. In the case of some of the more unique melee assassins Evelyn is a pretty great jungler for an assassin that's not only based in having an early game and Kassadin is a scaling monster that has a pretty unique build path to get the most of his late game power. Basically most of this melee assassins have pretty unique items paths themselves and you can always adjust to the situation since most of their burst is inside their kit rather than their items meaning you can rush some different items if you are willing to do. Also ap assassins usually have a lot of mobility to get in and to get out of a difficult situation more than the normal assassins and by having some tank stats like hp is more forgiving for the player to make a mistake.
