Unpopular opinion but it needs to be heard

Before I go on, I love almost all the new games that were teased, especially the fps game, because I've been playing cs for as long as I have League. The only ones I didn't like were the mobile/console versions, because in almost every instance of a game going to different platforms, it just eats at resources and time that could have been spent on the actual game itself.

Now onto what needs to be heard.

This 10 year anniversary was for Riot games and not for League of legends.

The only thing they announced for league of legends was that urf is coming back and it's not the trash arurf that nobody who played the game before arurf came out, enjoyed. Before you guys go into the comments and say "well they announced all the pre-season stuff", this is not new and it is not in celebration of league's 10th year at all, this is just normal stuff that was tagged along like the esports part and the new champion. I was hoping that Riot would come through and make some amazing 10 year celebration, but we were left with some shitty loot instead, and not even some missions we have to do or something interactive, it's literally just log in and claim it.

Agree with me or not, it is nothing new that the game has been broken for a long time now, and Riot either hasn't understood what the community wants, or they just don't know how to do it. Many of the decisions that were made like the runes reforged, new champion designs that are unhealthy and toxic to the game like Zoe and Akali, taking WAY too long to fix the absolute cancers that plagued league of legends like Akali and her overloaded kit, Viktor top, 8.10/11, refusing to admit they made a mistake and just reverting things, and a whole plethora of other things.

If you played the game since seasons 1-4, you will know that the game has changed, and for almost everyone, not for the better. It's somewhat hard to find these people now a days because most just up and quit when things weren't being fixed, and I am not expecting much because the people who would genuinely understand are gone, but I hope you guys can at least hear me out and maybe do some research. For example, a start would be watching Uberdanger's most recent video about the 10 year anniversary, as it goes over a lot of what people are/were frustrated about, but it is not a perfect example.

Please Riot. Streamers, major personalities, and the general community have been saying things like "this season has been the worst of all time" for the past 3-4 years now and things aren't getting any better. Please reach out to the people that actually play the game, and pay attention to how the game is being received. I love League of legends and i'm probably not going to quit again anytime soon, but seriously, this is hurting my soul to keep watching as the game I grew up loving slowly fades and meshes into a game with less and less enjoyment and creativity as each season passes. And I know what the comments are going to say about this "but I love the game casually, and I don't even play much ranked at all", trust me when I say this, or even just look up old youtube videos from 2014-2015, this game used to be super fun, trying out new shit and inventing new things with a group of friends and genuinely having a good time. Sadly, now the game is mainly either just lowkey tryharding and having fun while winning, or losing and having arguments or just not having a good time because the 5-1 Kha Zix just one shot you with little to no counterplay.

If you never got to experience all the fun game modes like Dominion, Ascension, One for all, Dark star thresh, Nemesis Draft, Odyssey, Nexus Siege, etc... I genuinely feel sorry for you, but at the same time, I am fairly confident with how the game is now, most of these game modes wouldn't be as fun.

What I mean by this is Ascension was one of my favourite game modes when they released it. You had to run around the map in a dominion-esque manner and collect the crystals while fighting the enemy, gaining points for kills and crystals. There was a massive Xerath in the center that did a lot of damage and was essentially the baron of the game mode. The person that dealt the killing blow would gain increased size, , mana/energy cost reduced by 100% and a massive buff to all basic stats like damage, armor pen, cdr, etc... If they were to bring this back right now with everything they have in the game now, champions like Akali, Mordekaiser, Pyke, etc... would just make the game infinitely less fun and make it a game of who can pick the most broken champions, which to be fair is pretty much just what summoners rift is like right now.

They said they were bringing back URF, and not arurf, so I am fairly confident (I would love to be proved wrong) that it will be a shit show of people picking champions like Zoe, Akali, Mordekaiser, Qiyana, etc... and just stomping everything because of how toxic their kits are. Old Garen was one of the strongest in URF because his e stacked everytime you used it, so if you just kept spamming e, you could have 3 going at the same time all ticking up damage at the same time, and with how Garen is right now, it will be funny watching him kill you in 0.1 seconds by just walking over you. I can only imagine how these new champions are going to play out and how many people are going to complain, but as I said, I would love to be proved wrong.

I am one of those season 3 players who's not gone yet and I feel you. I told myself pre-season 10 will be my last try to geniuenly enjoy the game I used to love so much, because these last two years have been pure and utter frustration.

As far as I can tell, apart from new mountain drake buff (defence, wohoo!!) pre-season changes revolve around more flashy RNG, CDR and damage.

I also think all these new projects might be a bit too much and my only hope would be for League to become so insignificant that it can turn back to the slower-paced, tactical game with actual skill expression it used to be.

It is looking grim though and I might won't be here in a couple of months either.

I remember the Winter wonderland Urf as being kind of interesting and fun for the time it was open in the game. It's like the time of the year insane amounts of people come back temporarily.

Pretty much. So Elder can "execute" (whee, MOAR DAMAGE!) Drakes change the map so you can: a) move faster (whee "outplays" in JG! = MOAR KILLS) b) Hide in new bushes (whee MOAR ASSASSINS! = MOAR KILLS!!!!!!) c) Have new attack paths (MOAR KILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) And let's add even more random bushes to random spots to hide in because ... (MOAR KILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Here's a better idea Riot, mid-season changes for you:

  1. Remove wards entirely, why have vision at all at this point?
  2. Just make everyone insta-gib, let every champ 100->0 instantly: fast game, much kills WAO!!!!!!!!!!

I don't agree with you. I've felt like Riot went out with a bang on their 10th year and announced a lot of cool new games and things to look forward to. League has a big preseason patch ahead that's, like always, changing up the gameplay and evolving the map so i'm always excited for that. A new champion (Senna) to celebrate, possibly Fiddle and Voli reworks hitting the Rift soon after her, My Shop, Login bonuses, OG URF, animated series set in Zaun, (close to anime/movies people have asked for years), and 5 games announced.

Although you can argue that new champs, reworks and pre-season changes are nothing new since they come out every month (two months) and pre-season is a yearly big patch, Riot in my eyes have exceeded my expectations with just how much they've announced the upcoming stuff.

I've been playing League since S1, which is also 10 years as a player. I'm not gone and i don't have my one foot out the door yet. I've experienced League changing over the years and personally, League has become monumentally better than what it used to be way back in the day. I don't feel nostalgic by looking back because i've been playing League for all this time. Many friends that i've played the game with have left the game for various reasons and RIot's never going to 100% pander to every player with every patch or new release - myself included.

Riot's made mistakes and they'll keep making mistakes. We've also made mistakes and called for buffs/nerfs/changes that ended up making the game worse and yet we don't own up to them, we shift the blame. I've long since stopped trusting the shared voice of this community and i've started using my head to figure out if something is bad or good for me. But by experience doesn't speak for everyone which means that every player has their own bad/good changes that Riot puts out.

Finally, the expectation from Riot isn't that League retains as much of the veteran players as possible. As with life, people move on for various reasons and pretending as if Riot not showering vetarans with gifts/respect or changes aimed specifically for them at every possible opportunity is a bad thing, is a moot point. I don't want to be treated as a special player nor royalty. Just as i've picked up League 10 years ago and stuck with it to this day, the same way will someone new today embark on their 10+ year long journey.

As for the new games, i'm only interested in Legends of Runeterra and animated series ARCANE. Heartstone wasn't my thing as i've never liked to play WoW, despite being that player who immensely loved WC3 and TFT expansion and love the story Blizzard crafted over the years and expanded in WoW. Gwent is really fun but for me came a bit too late once my Witcher 3 hype died down (and playing Gwent in-game). I'm not interested in Artifact (Valve's card game) and it's being reworked as we speak. But as a 10 year long League player, i'm certainly interested in a card game of a game i've stuck to playing this long.

ARCANE is going to be fun as it's likely the setting in Zaun and when Vi and Jinx were young. So we're going to see the origins of certain champions or at least, have some more of their mysterious backgrounds/upbringings revealed.

#All in all to me, this is a big celebration for both Riot and League and i'm proud to be a part of this journey.

the assassin rework was that nerf

The assassin rework was buffs they then nerfed after because adcs and mages were crying that people were crying out assassins during the time of a mass rework (were popular) and those are their natural counters then nerfed even more because adcs were using their items.

You forgot to add doing a bad job even maintaining the game client. Love how the keystone page is buggy and chest page "Loot box" keeps on taking multiple clicks to even go in to then give a error.

Almost every single champion has viability in a massive majority of the game. Some outliers exist, but lets talk Silver gold MMR which represents a majority of the player curve. What's not able to be played?

There's a game balance concept called perfect imbalance. If a game has "kits" it uses this, if you run an ever shifting meta? you use this. Mobas have always been designed like this.

How oblivious are you guys?

You mean balancing for the sake of making money and favoritism is good? Yeah i want more games with the same balance philosohphy then.

I kinda liked how League of Legends 10 year anniversary was more like Riotcon rather than a celebration and a peek into League's future. If anything this was like hey look we have other cool stuff, ignore this old tired dusty league of legends. lol

Maybe what we were supposed to take away from it was that Riot has too many other projects to care about league anymore? 🤔

Camille Ferrøs3 votes

It really it's that. 10 year anniversary and yet nothing for league of legends. It was like a mini Blizzcon, in a way they baited people into a big celebration hyping it up with hints to something big and at the end, nothing for league expect the classic pre-season. Gained traction and attention from more people for the sake of a big promo for all the new games and projects, they are working on. Just imagine the difference if it was just a normal video of Joe talking about the new games, and now look at this. Its kinda sad about the people that really love the game, League of Legends.

Rashlasher3 votes

No, it's not, and your assertion of that statement is overly confident in itself. League of Legends is and has been for a while now a franchise. It's not just Summoner's Rift - that's like the franchise's "main sport". League of Legends itself is about the whole and the anniversary is celebrating the creation of the whole. Every new game other than the FPS is related to League and expanding it. You claim to be part of "the people that really love the game" but are you, if you can't understand that, or did you just hop on SR a few years ago? It seems like most of the S1 veterans here are enjoying themselves and understand what I've just explained.

Look, dude, the worry over attention to League's main game is fine. We can discuss that and all sorts of opinions. But people need to stop snowballing the issue into an exaggeration and ignoring/dismissing everything that counters that opinion. Because that doesn't help solve anything - not for you, me, anybody. And seriously, you can't just insinuate that literally everything except SR isn't "real" League.

Camille Ferrøs2 votes

I mean like it or not they did little to nothing about League of Legends itself. Ye they expanded as a company but that does nothing to League itself.

Rashlasher2 votes

Dude did you miss the entire point of what I said. League of Legends IS all those games. The universe of League IS being expanded, because all the games except the FPS literally are still centered in the world that is League of Legends. Classic Summoner's Rift League is NOT "League of Legends", it is one of the main parts of it. And even that part of it HAS been expanded. How can you even claim "nothing"? Were you even here for past anniversaries? They don't normally do 10 days of awesome gifts (11 counting the freaking anniversary skin) or bring back URF. And the pre-season changes with the elemental dragon maps is completely new and interesting. Once again I gotta ask what you think an anniversary celebration even is like Jesus.

Camille Ferrøs1 votes

League of Legends the MOBA is not Runeterra. What we got in the world of Runeterra expanded with the games. League of Legends the top lane, the items the strategies, not demacia and ionia...

AbiwonKenabi1 votes

As someone who I see complaining on the regular about lore, I'm surprised you aren't more interested and excited about Riot expanding Runeterra. Feels like you're on here just to be negative sometimes :/

Camille Ferrøs1 votes

Stating the facts doesn't mean I'm against or not excited about the other games. After all the games themselves won't do much about the lore, but thats another conversation.

Håppy7 votes

For those who don't know what League used to be like, go watch Siv HD's old videos. That's the best example of old League. Of silly League.

Cdore6 votes

My biggest gripe is that Riot knows Summoner's Rift 5v5 is their most popular mode of play for League. instead of making a new mode that has all these RNG aspects like drake and terrain changes, and mechanical play (wait, that was called URF), they instead have forced us to endure their gameplay through changing that mode's balance toward faster games and higher damage. The correct way to have done it is just to have had it be a more urf-like SR if they felt like they wanted that to be the popular mode of play. It's precisely why there's the growing suggesting of introducing classic mode, so for those of us who prefer slower play and more strategy can play the game we played back in earlier seasons. This burst meta doesn't reward intelligence.

items and runes are dumbed don and make every single champion balanced around them. A champs identity should not be tied to thier ability to abuse items and masteries. FFS fix the game

Ryusaether3 votes

The fact is that, in my opinion, you don't really get the point.

TL;DR: The world of Runeterra finally expanding in more ways is good and is League related, people cry too much about balance without trying to adapt and improve.

This 10th year anniversary is not only for Riot, but for League mainly. The universe of Runeterra (born, or maybe better, GROWN with League) will finally be expanded in other aspects, we will get a fighting game, a card game that will give us an even greater worldbuilding and different concepts, and that other game that even further expands the world of Runeterra and its creatures/characters.

I don't want to say it, but as your title reads, someone has to say it, I think you don't really understand what these announcement mean. They aren't only for the single game you play, of course, but this game has become something more. It appears to me that you don't really care for it to expand but only want the title you play to fit your expectations.

Can Riot do better with LoL? Of course. The game has its flaws, and they aknowledged them, they even said sorry in the video for all their mistakes and thanked the players for keeping on and believing in them, they DID revert things such as Rengar and LB, I haven't seen Viktor top in months and they are currently making him a proper midlaner again, nerfed Akali to the ground etc. They CAN do more, they can bring back some gutted champion/work on them so they aren't overloaded (Azir/Kalista), they can keep some fun build diversity without forcing champs to buy specific Items to be good, and many other things, bring back some game modes (don't really care about those though, never found them that much entertaining, I like the competitive aspect more), slightly reduce damage, etc.

But that doesn't mean they have to focus ONLY on this, the game isn't as bad as some people make it look, it has its flaws, but some cry waaaaay too much about them, instead of adapting/accepting their own mistakes and going on.

KalokasIsMyDaddy2 votes

It wasn't about Riot. As far as I know, Riot Games was founded in 2006 and not in 2009. League has been out for 10 years, so this is the 10-year anniversary.

I'm disappointed in Riot. They had a chance to make this game the best (free) game out there, but they opted for money. That's all they do now. Money. Little Legend eggs, emotes, skins, fuck-all. Who cares about balance, and the playerbase, when you can have the whales out there who will buy anything that's thrown at them? Who cares about a good game when money exists? We fed Riot so much that not even boycotting can change them. Nothing can. Enjoy this game all you want. It will continuously devolve until it is just some burning waste on the floor and the only people that will be playing it are the ones who spent thousands on it or the people that refuse to believe it's not going well. Unless we change that. Unless we force Riot to wake up NOW before it's too late. It's now or never.

FSRER2 votes

Wouldn't it be nice if they brought back the real original urf, with the champions that were in the game back then and the items and the runes? That would actually be amazing and the new players would get to see the history of this game, that was once the no 1. game in the world and now it is just a drug that many players like me, use to kill some time

Fondling Gems2 votes

While I do agree with a number of the points you make, I do think that you missed a couple things that I haven't seen pointed out yet.

URF is not the only thing we are getting that is directly related to in game League. We are getting a whole series of login rewards.

Icons, emotes, wards, 6300 blue essence, Masterwork chest, skin shards, a legendary skin, prestige points, worlds tokens, orange essence, gemstones, and a brand new skin celebrating League's 10th anniversary.

Might have missed an item or two, but these are all excellent rewards and far more than they have given in every anniversary previously put together. While I agree with you on a lot of the balance changes, I do not agree that they are insufficiently celebrating League itself.

ModCaptainMårvelous2 votes

Sorta disagree.

The thing is it's not the 10th for League the game

It's the 10th for League the IP.

They announced some stuff for league but announcing nothing but stuff for League of Legends is a bad call. It shows that even in ten years, you're leaning so heavily on a single game that your big 10th is just for a single game. It doesn't show growth, progress or new advances. It shows stagnation. Senna, URF and Preseason were basically the three best things you could have shown. Music too if you count that as well as the mobile/console version (which is basically just League with different toppings).

But for years, people have clamored for more with league. I have tons of friends who don't like league the game but love champions, lore, music, characters, you name it. One of the biggest things EVERYONE says is "I wish I could play this in a non-moba". And so they did. Now your characters that are loved, save for the new IP FPS, are all available in other forms. Fighting games, card games, whatever that diablo game was, etc.

This was absolutely a great 10th for League because it once again reaffirms League is bigger than just a single game: It's a whole universe of things.

They're absolutely celebrating it by letting you explore the world, interact with the characters and enjoy the best aspects of League (Strategy, Story and Community) without necessarily having to always play SR. (At least on your PC).

If it was just project A then yes, I'd agree with the argument. But they showed off way more than that.

They're basically interchangeable though?

It's not like Warcraft where there were three games (and a few cancelled ones) before WoW. There was one: League. You can't really have the IP without the game and the MOBA will always be the core thing when people hear "League of Legends". It's celebrating the IP more than the game but the game is still plenty referenced and shown. Especially considering it arguably got twice the screen time compared to everything else that was shown.

IP more than game. Game is still referenced. Almost every game shown has built up "League" as a whole except for Project A which was more of a "I'm just going to throw this in because I can't put it anywhere else."

ArtumisPrime2 votes

I agree they are basically the same thing, but your initial comment was "this is for LoL the IP, not LoL the game." To which I heavily disagree.

When other companies, let's use Blizzard for example here, have WoW's anniversaries it's for the game. Not the IP. Hearthstone doesn't get special events for that. Because they're celebrating WoW's anniversary, not the IP's.

To be clear here, I don't think that RIOT releasing new games is a bad thing. Tangentially, I think that them announcing SEVEN new games is a really bad sign. It feels like they're concerned that LoL is on its death knell and they're trying to cash in before the game dies and people forget the IP. I'm even excited for the fighting game.

However, all we get are some crappy rewards, locked behind the same exact token quest system that we've had going constantly for months, and some flashy animations on first spawn after load. A 10th anniversary is a big deal, and this "event" (if you can even call it that) is incredibly disappointing.

Serika Zero2 votes

since either the vocal majority, or over 80% of you still haven't figured it out yet. Let me tell you this: Riot is not balancing this game, and its not their intention to do that. They intentionally keep some picks strong, some picks weak. Its done on purpose, and those picks change every now and then during a year to keep the meta "fresh"
