Champion Mastery- An honest perspective
The recent changes to the game have included the long awaited champion mastery 6-7. People have been waiting for these to be implemented for a very long time, just not quite the way riot has implemented them. The previous 1-5 masterys had an issue. You could get mastery 5 with a champion and claim to be a "master" of that champion even if you have a 30% win rate with them. As long as you put in the time you were fine. When RIOT created the champion mastery 6-7 they wanted to combat this issue by requiring you to get 2 S ranks + 500 blue essence for M6 and 3 S ranks+600 blue essence for M7. Sounds good right? You need to do well on those champions to get them. Well not really. Two issues come into play.
- Blue essence. Right now getting blue essence needs you to get champion shards from hextech crafting. This would be fine if you did't have to play different champions to get chests. This will hopefully be fixed with RIOT selling champion shards in the store although it now becomes an IP grind to level up.
- S ranks. In theory this is fine, but when was the last time you played a tank jungle and got an S rank? Tank top? Probably a very long time. I Sion Bot I highlights this issue here.
The solutions to these issues are simple. Either don't ask for blue essence to get a champion mastery banner or just stick withe the IP grind and tweak requirements certain champions to get S grades.
After all this I know some people will be thinking, "Why does this matter?" That's a very good question so I will set up an example. Let's say you are very good at running. You didn't start off this way but you put in years of work to perfect your stride and increase your cardio. You go into a race. You do very well in that race, first place to be exact. You walk up to the podium to accept your medal, but they don't give it to you. After all this work and winning this race you aren't allowed to get your medal without paying money. It's purely cosmetic and doesn't make you a good runner but to you it means a lot. It's an easy way of showing and proving your prowess at running. It gives you a huge sense of accomplishment but you aren't allowed to get it. Trade the medal for champion mastery 6-7 and the years of learning how to run with perfecting a champions mechanics and you understand why.
This is why people find the new masterys annoying, myself included.
