Maokai Buff Requested

Hello friends,

I'm a Maokai support main because I hate myself and like trees. I'm wondering if we would make Mayo's Arcane Smash 900 units instead of 600. It seems like a small buff, would make it more inline with other skill shots, and gives him some directed poke.

Note: I'm not asking for his knockback range to be adjusted at all.

yeah lets give a spell 300 more range, what could possibly go wrong with this. Small buff, hehe xd.

It's pretty short as is. Increasing it 1.5 times is game breaking? That puts it below both of Lux's skill shots.

A range buff like this can have huge effect honestly. I dont think its a small buff to make a range buff like this. I agree that maokai maybe is a bit out of favor but he has the tools to be a thread when the meta favors him more again. We had whole months of maokai dominating toplane so we should be really really careful about buffing him, especially like this. Small buffs are lifereg buffs and 3 ad buffs or something, changing a spell to have 1.5 more range is a huge buff.

He was a top-lane monster for a lot of reasons, but not the range on his Q, nor will that return him to favor. I thought this was the least offensive of his major problem. You could fix what I see as a no-poke problem three ways:

  1. What i proposed above
  2. Giving him a lot more control with his E
  3. Buffing his movement speed.

He's got horrible MS, so his option as a support is to bomb them with sapplings and go OOM, or W,Q and hope to get out before the enemy can capitalize, or hope his ADC provides cover fire. Should he receive the buff I've proposed, his Q would be viable without W where as now, with his slow MS and short Q range, he really needs W first.

It's fairly easy to dodge, its slow is minimal and the damage isn't the issue. He's a CC machine, he just suffers in the bot lane because he's just shy of being effective. I'd say he's probably a tier 2 support right now where an experienced player can make him work, but it's going to require effort. A range increase alone isn't going to make him Tier 1, and it won't buff his jungle, and may only give him a slight benefit in the top lane.

Or, I don't know, you can play real supports? He isn't a support so his kit shouldn't be balanced around support. He has plenty of trading potential top lane without usually going too oom.

Ok well Ashe is listed as a support and he isnt. We shouldn't limit ourselves to what's listed in game.

His passive is best in the bot lane. He has three CC abilities, and his ult is best for non-solo fights which is typically found I'm bot lane during the landing phase.

I don't know why you think he isn't a support since if we didn't name the chamo, youd definitely call that kit support.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying it can't work. However, Maokai isn't a support in my opinion because of the fact you listed. He has no way to poke and harrass consistently (his saplings as you said use a lot of mana and aren't the most reliable poke). Not to mention, he really needs a pretty good chunk of gold to get to where Maokai is really fulfilling his role and he just won't get that from the support position. Think of Alistar. He's similar to Maokai in that he doesn't have any ranged harras. However, because of his ult, he becomes very tanky with very little gold which is why he works well as a support.

I'm not saying that he can't do well as a support im just saying that there is no reason to buff him based on his supporting being weak.

I play a decent amount of Maokai. Not really sure that's needed. If Maokai's gonna poke in lane, he's just gonna all in for the trade so the extra range really isn't necessary.

Just so you know, yes, increasing a range by a factor 1.5 is game breaking.

Look at how they changed a few top champs like Trundle/Darius/etc. basic attack range by 25 units, and it impacted them a lot.
