Syndra

For being listed as an early game bully by many streamers and youtubers, Syndra isn't really even a bully until lvl 6. Heck, she doesn't even have the mana pool to last until lvl 6 if you use your Q too many times.

Speaking of that, for a champion that revolves around hitting her Q multiple times, it is one of the weakest abilities early game. It's like an aoe basic that costs 10% of your mana.

Can Syndra once again actually control the laning phase in the early game? That would be much appreciated.

There's seriously no good reason to pick Syndra competetivly, I only play her because she's the most fun champ in the game but in terms of viabilty she gets outclassed by miles. You get outranged, outdamaged, outsustained by every midlaner right now.

Lady Hammerlock2 votes

id have to agree her ult can't compare to the dmg that some basic abilities do hell some champions deal more dmg then her ult in 2 spells

xRalinx1 votes

i know this is long time passed its post, but i just had to say that Syndra's aspiring point to me is that she can cast her spells while moving, strafe the Q drops while some idiot chases you and hes either going to stop or let you stun him while you keep running and the stun lasts so long that you can easily lose them in the jungle unless they happen to be able to jump wells every 2 seconds

Baseball3b9 votes

Honestly all she needs is her Q nerfs reverted and a slight mana buff. Right now her early game isn't even worth using mana for until you get 2-3 points in her Q.

I'm sure that would be appreciated. I'm sure dominating the lane as a certain champion would be much appreciated for any main of that champion. What I would ask of you is what is it about Syndra that she needs to control the laning phase in the early game in order to do her job? The only reason I can see to justify it is that she used to be much more of a lane bully.

I'm not a Syndra main or expert, so feel free to take my opinion with a grain of salt, but really the only reason I can see to make a change that allows her to control the laning phase in the early game is that she needs it in order to function. So, Syndra mains and enthusiasts (and other mid lanes that would come at the expense of this), does she need to be dominating her lane in order to function?

Auryiel10 votes

Yes.

Her late game is abysmal. She needs to get a lead on her opponents to crush them during the mid game and end the game while she is still more than a stun bot.

Either buff her early game or her late game.

Currently she does need to dominate lane to function, because her scaling/kit make it so that she falls off in the late game and therefore has traditionally been about taking her early power, snowballing it into the mid game and ending the game before it reached the late. If she doesn't have a strong laning phase then she is no longer capable of doing that barring luck/significant outplay of the enemy laner/successful jungler assistance. So you play her and you watch as the laning phase passes you by, you progress into the mid with no advantage to push and you wait for the enemy mid to outscale you. It's horrible.

If you give her a stronger late I will be more than happy for her to retain her mediocre laning phase but right no it's a completely unacceptable power curve for a champion to have. Mid is full of champions like Azir and Cass who have a strong early AND then hypserscale into the late. On the other hand you get champions like Orianna and Karthus who suffer a poor start, but will hard carry for you later on. And then you get Syndra, the champion who starts out AND ends poorly, banking her game on the chance of having a strong period in between. It's so obviously an unacceptable state for a champion to be in.

She needs to dominate the laning phase or she needs insurance of being useful later on. Buff her late game scaling and her early game is perfectly fine. Don't want to buff her late? Then she needs to be dominant in lane. She just will not ever be viable if you don't do either of those things and I am continuously baffled that she has been in this state all year long.

For what it's worth as a Syndra main, it would be nice if her Q mana cost could go down in the early game. That or W.

I personally would prefer she remain strong late rather than early (I see a lot of people saying her late game is weak, but I am inclined to disagree, when I am ahead or even just even with the enemy mid I am usually chunking everyone on the enemy team by late game)

Being a late game carry also fits with her growing power thematic, another reason I would love to see it remain an important part of her kit. I do not think she needs to be a dominate lane bully, but I do think she could use slightly stronger tools to get to the late game. I think slightly lower mana costs is the way to go there.

MysticFlameHaze2 votes

I believe Syndra is strong throughout laning phase as i have learnt to manage my mana well on all my mid laners, I love playing Syndra and i mained her in ranked last season. At the start of this "tank meta" i found her to be lacking and i didn't really see a need to nerf her early game Q but that's okay i found my way around it, i just grab my W first instead now simply because i can still farm well with it and it is stronger.

One thing i wish could be changed about Syndra is her passive. I don't find it right that a champ should have to wait till level 18 to get their passive? what is the average time to get to level 18? 30 minutes into the game? Even then her passive doesn't really add to much to her. Maybe if they made it something like Cassiopeia . But I'm not saying it has to be like hers, it's just an idea. She is extremely powerful character according to her lore and maybe if there were something more fitting to the champ for a passive that would be nice.

I see lately there are a lot of post about champion passives, I would like Syndra to be one of those potential subjects for change.

I mean come on her splash arts are her literally lifting the structures out of the ground behind her! lol

Boomerangbro2 votes

You just passively pointed out her flaw. By taking a point in her W first, it shows that you really don't need to get your Q, with which her kit revolves around.

HadesBlades1 votes

It is like ori her kit revolves around her Q, the primary difference though is she can shield gain a movement speed boost and has increased auto damage, and a teamfight ult. >_> Syndra gets out classed again

MysticFlameHaze1 votes

I don't like ori, she's dumb, but yeah of course she would be outclassed in a team fight, it's a different kit and attack style.

HadesBlades1 votes

Not just teamfights laning too she can win if she is good.

MysticFlameHaze1 votes

no no, you should even be needing your Q that badly, early in the game, why would you be going all out before 6 anyway, most champs don't start going out before they hit 6. was it not only that her early game damage on the Q was nerfed?

Just max your Q after a about 2 points into the W E and you should be dealing sufficient damage.

Baseball3b1 votes

But the problem is, she needs to completely dominate her lane to stay relevant, and a pre-6 advantage helps immensely, as opposed to relying on that incredibly short window of opportunity between hitting level 6 and transitioning to mid-game like she currently does

MysticFlameHaze1 votes

hmmm, I'm not to sure then, I've just recently started playing her again, and i like her early game. But now that i think about it. She in my opinion was very good against ahri, leblanc and fizz, and now i find it much more difficult to fight ahri with her since the fox's recent buffs and changes. Syndra needs some help for sure now that I've realized this.

Baseball3b1 votes

I'm actually fine with her passive. It gives Riot easy levers to balance her without feeling artificial (i.e. Class)

Part of the problem is not only that her early game Qs are abysmal, but her max rank W and E effects contribute very little to her kit

MysticFlameHaze1 votes

her W and E and insanely important to her kit what do you mean it contributes a little bit? no syndra would be able to take down an enemy champ by standing there and spamming the Q key. also her W is her strongest ability not including the ultimate, it has a higher base damage and higher scaling at max rank.

Baseball3b1 votes

I was referring to the passive max rank effects of her W and E ( i.e. her passive - the slightly longer slow on her W and wider E cone)

Sorry, wrote that late last night, should have been clearer

Most people don't mind a weak early game, if its compensated by something. Syndra doesn't have mobility so that's out of the question. She doesn't have any innate tankiness, so scratch that.

The only thing that could compensate a weak early game, would be too have a better then normal late game. I think most people would rather have her late game buffed, then her early game, when she was a huge lane bully.

This works too but how? o.o

ModAcademy Kayn2 votes

Well its ben suggested that they could move her current passive into her spells and maybe give her a new one. If that was the case I would make the passive something like "Syndra gains a 5% increase in AP for every sphere out, Max of 20%."

This would reward proper placement and timing of spheres and cds to utilize. As Syndra gains more CD late game, she can sustain more spheres out. Meanwhile early game, when most don't have a lot of AP, it wouldn't do that much.

If not "5% for each sphere out" maybe "5% for each ability maxed", since that fits the thematic of growing ascending power.

Vistha Kai8 votes

Frankly, the biggest issue balance-wise is her early rank Q damage-to-mana ratio.

Perhaps you saw those comments that say Syndra deals more damage with basic attacks than her Q?

Personally, using level 1 Qs feels so bad, because of how insignificant the damage is, that for the first 3-4 levels I don't even bother to think about harassing the enemy laner.

Now some comparisons of level 1 mage champions' damage: Syndra 50 damage; 40 mana; 1.25 damage per one point of mana spent Annie 80 damage; 60 mana; 1.33 dmg/mana Brand 107,4+ damage; 70 mana; 1.53 dmg/mana - Thanks to the passive, +37,4 damage on the lowest lvl 1 HP target Cassiopeia 75 damage; 40 mana; 1.875 dmg/mana - Mind the DoT it's the most similar spell to Syndra's Q. Karma 80 damage; 50 mana; 1.6 dmg/mana Karthus 40/80 damage; 20 mana; 2-4 dmg/mana Lissandra 70 damage; 85 mana; min. 0.82 dmg/mana - Assuming you cast the spell the moment it goes off CD the cost is effectively 56.6 mana therefore 1.24 dmg/mana and can only go higher! Malzahar 80 damage; 60 mana; 1.33 dmg/mana Ziggs 75 damage; 50 mana; 1.5 dmg/mana

So of those that have somewhat comparable abilities(poke-wise) only Lissandra loses to Syndra, BUT that's only if she doesn't wait like half a second before casting, which let's face it, always happens.

As to her late game... Well, I've been playing Syndra so long that I can go 0/3 in lane and still carry (if the team allows or at least doesn't get in the way, that is). Most of the stuff that falls into "buff late game" category are bug fixes and QoLs. For example the one Meddler responded to here.

Maaaybe incorporating her current passive into the spells themselves, like Shyvana had in the past and giving her something else, but I don't mind the one she has now.

Excuse my chaotic post, but it's late on this side of the Earth.

Boomerangbro3 votes

First of all, I wanted to thank you to replying to this thread. I didn't think that it would get so many upvotes as to have a Rioter come and read and comment on it.

Ok, maybe wanting her to be a lane bully is asking too much, but I'm a little confused here. I have to ask myself, What is Syndra? Before, it was easy. Early game control mage that shifted nicely into late game damage mage. Now I find myself struggling to place her. She does poor in the early game, which if she gets behind leaves her struggling to reach Transcendence and ultimately makes her an easy pick in the mid/late game. If she get's ahead in the laning phase, she reaches her potential faster, and can make some decent plays late. The struggle with Syndra though, comes in the laning phase. The goal with her, is to reach max transcendence with each full-pointed ability. Well, to do this, you would think, "hmm, I should max my Q first". Good plan! That's what you want on Syndra as well. The problem is, when you put points in it, you spend MASSIVE amounts of mana to the point where getting Q at lvl 1 just isn't worth it; Dmg/mana ratio. You end up putting a point in your W first.

When you kit revolves around your Q, and you're not putting points in your Q early, there's your first problem.

This lead me to my next point.

Syndra's lore describes her as a being that started out with potential. Each day, she grows stronger into a woman with unrivaled immense power, capable of maintaining raw energy itself, gaining transcendence with only will-power alone.

Before, she started out with early power, then transitioned into late game through the use of her passive. Now, she's generally thought of as weak, because she now doesn't have that cushion to help her move into fully stacking her passive. She doesn't need to be a bully, but when YOU are the one struggling with keeping a lane (Her former role), shes left with not knowing what she is, and what she should transition into.

She is known as the champion with one of THE highest learning curves in the game, and one with which streamers recommend you not to use during your promos. With a high learning curve, you need to know all her combos, how she revolves around her Q and when you combo all while micro-managing your spheres in teamfights. This gets you out of sticky situations. However, I generally don't feel as rewarded for when I successfully win my lane, micro-manage players and spheres in teamfights and generally her overall gameplay. It may be just me, but players should be rewarded for managing to pull off a tough champion. It just doesn't seem to happen with Syndra though.

Lastly, we come to her Stats. She has NO moblity, NO tank stats, and (arguably no reason to pick her competitively). As I said, she just isn't rewarding enough for players to actually deal with her learning curve and pull her off effectively. She's left with Raw damage and control. This leaves me to conclude like others have mentioned, SHE NEEDS TO WIN LANE to be effective. If she doesn't have a lane to win, she just becomes dead weight to the team and becomes a stun-bot. She needs to be more. It doesn't need to be her "dominating her lane", but I can't quite place it, she just needs something.

Solutions: Increase the damage of her lvl1 Q. Decrease the cost of lvl1 Q. Balance the Dmg to Mana Ratio of lvl1 Q. Make her passive feel rewarding. Make is so that Winning lane isn't her only objective. Shift around her power while still keeping her balanced. Make her learning curve to player accomplishment feel better (you want to feel good about pulling out great combos effectively). Her ult is straight burst, maybe the spheres could have an after effect based on the last ability syndra used? (max Q could have the sphere explode after a second, max transcendence could have her getting one more orbiting sphere, max E could have her use her spheres to shield herself, and how about at lvl 18 her orbiting orbs float farther away, but deal damage with each enemy they hit. Think IO from Dota 2.)

She's a Transcendent being of infinite power. Don't be afraid to let her show it.

Thank you RiotR for listening and reading this thread. As always, please read everyone's comments as they really care as much about Syndra as I do.

Cheers!

Edit: maybe it's her reliance on her Spheres is what's stumping me. I think that's what is giving my brain a hard time. All her kit is basically revolving around her Q. Maybe stylize it so that different combos reward different interactions her Q can have! Her kit is good, just needs the Q not to be the spotlight. "So much untapped power!!!"

Tusutaki1 votes

Syndra's Q and E was nerfed. However nobody wanted her Q to be nerfed but they agreed with his E. Her E pre nerf was controlling the lane and allows her to snowball easily more than anything else.

Wildnil3 votes

I figure I can probably fill in as a Syndra expert here. I'm a Diamond-level Syndra main on LAN (I wish I could post on english forums with that account). When I play her in teambuilder, I get matched with challenger players (after waiting for at least a half hour, usually more).

Right now her biggest problem is the Q damage relative to its mana cost. Between the direct Q nerf and a series of indirect nerfs to mana (which affected all mages, like regen changes, chalice nerfs), she's been hamstrung.

Her entire kit revolves around spamming Q. Mana/regen nerfs hit her twice as hard as other mages because her E, W, and R pretty much automatically have to also include the cost of a Q, but may not necessarily include the damage of that Q.

As it currently stands, casting Q at rank one is a noob trap. If I am forced to cast my Q at rank one aside from when I'm at max mana, I consider myself to be losing lane. I am losing lane, mathematically speaking. When the skill that gives a champion their CORE IDENTITY is a trap.... that's a problem.

She needs 10 damage added back to her Q, and her mana costs (or stats) tweaked. The 10 damage will make the skill at least somewhat satisfying - better than an autoattack, anyway - without making her a lane bully again. The mana tweaks will help smooth out the rest of her troubles.

Unlike some of the other players here, I do not consider her to be weak in the mid/late game. I actually find her to be extremely powerful during this period. She has a lot of tools and I've optimized their usage over several hundred games. Honestly, the thought of buffing her late game seems completely nuts (as in ridiculously overpowered) to me.

I personally think of her as a jack-of-all trades, and feel her power-curve should match this - her power curve should be relatively flat. Right now the mid and late game achieve this, but her early game is far too low. A slight Q damage buff would raise the early game back up, and mana tweaks would raise the (now flat) bar up to a competitive level.

Personally, I would not adjust her late game power beyond mana tweaks. Her damage is in a good spot. I don't have any problem with her percieved "lack of passive." I would not trade the Q or R buffs for the world. Adding something else to give here a "real" passive would mean you'd have to take away power elsewhere, or she would be undoubtedly overpowered. I'm happy where that power is now, and wouldn't want to risk messing that up trying to add a more interesting passive simply for the sake of having a more interesting passive.

Baseball3b2 votes

100% agree that she isn't as weak mid/late game as everyone says. My only issue is that her mid/late strength isn't strong enough to warrant the early game she has, so I'd love to see her regain her early Q damage + mana adjustments.

Great post.

SlashXVI2 votes

Totally agree with this. For me the level 3 q is kind of the "break-even-point" at which casting q is starting to not feel wasteful. As such if I were to do anything to syndra, I would probably adjust the level 1 and 2 damage of q so it is slightly higher (the 10 aditional damage does sound alright), while also rebalancing the mana usage (mostly on q since it might be a little too high for a spell you have to use so frequently)

Mansana1 votes

I can tell you right now that despite what people say about DFG not being a necessity on Syndra (which is true cause the active wasn't what made it good on her in the first place) it was one of the most built items and core wise mainly because of the raw ap and cdr. Also, as you can see here DFG was most frequently built last and if anything means she wasn't an abuser of the item compared to other champ who bought it first or second item and who can delete without any warning. The number of spheres pre-ult should be a good enough warning to other players to back up or go all in. Most Syndra player's built it down the line because 25% cdr from athenes and masteries would not be enough in terms of late game than her used to be 35% . So in reality her late game did get nerfed. Being able to Q every 2.5 seconds than 3, being able to E every 7 seconds than 9. every millisecond counts especially in team fights. The utility it brought for her was really good, fortunately Luden's is somewhat a good alternative for utility b/c the ms just makes it easier to reposition and actually makes late game around 45 minutes somewhat manageable but still difficult to pull off.

Also DFG late game was essential to her not falling off since the active made it so her ult wasn't useless. You could prematurely set your ult off with one Q and do the same amount of damage as a 5 sphere ult. This was important because most mages late game that are considered mid range burst mages, need to do their combo with in 4 seconds to delete someone. Every other mage kept that intact due to how their kit is, while Syndra's you need to wait out 6-8 seconds or even longer to get a good catch and/or opportunity to get the damage burst out. She kinda lost that and it's easy to avoid her threat now. her team fight presence is gone since the removal. Meaning Q>R>E would be less efficient than Q>E>R.

As for your question. She does need an early advantage to be good throughout the game. She doesn't have a good late game despite what people say. It's really easy to shutdown Syndra late due to her immobility. She doesn't have any means to reposition so other champion kits just seem more rewarding and more forgiving late game in terms of how they function. Then again, there is Luden's but almost every AP champ build Luden's so the richer get richer due to the net buff since the dfg loss.

See the patch before Syndra was nerfed, she was already on a decline of pick rate and win rate mainly due to the meta shift. This is one big problem I see sometimes, a nerf to a champ already falling out of the meta. Right now all I can say is wait it out and see where the meta takes her, or buff her during the early or late game. I'd rather see a buff late game. Might as well keep the trend going. You have already nerfed the early game of Champs like Viktor or Cass who's strong early game was nerfed to trade off for their insane late game. I have several ideas but I'd rather share it when Meddler get's into discussion as well.

shteeeb4 votes

Syndra does not need big buffs. She is pretty fine as is, except for her Q.

The nerf to her Q needs to be reverted. Like you said, it's literally an AoE autoattack at rank1 and I'd even say rank 2. I've literally started taking W at rank 1 and using it to harass until I get Q to rank 3. That's how bad it is.

Another QoL change that I've wanted since Season 3 and I'll repeat it here, I want her Q with smartcast to behave like Zigg's Q. By this I mean if my cursor is out of her Q range, I want it to just cast Q at max range in the direction of the cursor instead of making Syndra walk forward. I can't count the amount of times that has screwed up a quick max-range Q-E combo.

Her mana needs no buffs. It's the same as it has always been.

Not really, back when she had a meh laning phase and a decent E she was still beaten hard by champions like Fizz, Ahri, Kata, Zed, talon. The only good reason to pick her was because she was good into LeBlanc. Not particularly. The only real DoT mages in the game are Malz and pre-rework Cass.

Syndra's role in teamfights is to pump out semi-sustained dps in the form of her Qs/W on top of bursting a carry if possible.

She needs at least 5 Q's to take someone down. But I get what youre saying.

Her passif should be call Hey look you got one free spell but your mana cost/mana/mana reg suck because of this.
