Does anyone purposely buy health regen?

Tis a nice day·6/1/2015, 3:30:21 AM·16 votes·1,825 views

Excluding Unique item passives item 3083 item 3065, does anyone intentionally buy health regen items outside of simply completing a more powerful item? Some of the best users of better health regen Mordekaiser Soraka have abysmally low base regen making health regen items largely ineffective.

Lots of people complain about the mana-regen changes, but despite the adjustments, mana-regen on its own still holds a place when deciding builds. What about health regen?

Health regen doesn't have a very good reputation anymore. And for good reason. You can't get enough of it early game for it to really make much of an impact. And late game it is seriously one of the most useless stats in the game unless you get an obscene amount of it on a tank.

The dorans shield and tiamat are two items where the health regen can be appreciated. But excluding items with unique passives, it really isn't that great of a stat on any other items that come to mind.

The only time i actually get health regen is on Garen when i want to turret dive and then watch my health go from 5 to 100% in a few seconds for the lolz

It's kinda sad that some champions basically can't use health regen items because of how bad it is. Riven for example does not EQUAL the regeneration of one rejuv bead until level 15, meaning building any form of health regen is basically useless.

I remember the first time i learned that Tiamat had health regeneration on it. I was like WTF it gives regen? I agree that health regen is really underwhelming, but nowadays when I play Talon, Tiamat's health regen is actually the reason I don't upgrade it to Hydra until Late game. I know it's there, but I don't feel it consciously tbh.

Garen item 3083 item 3065 item 3102 item 3512 item 3143 item 3068 = DEMACIA!

The point of each fight is to make the enemies HP hit 0 before your own. Damage is dealt in larger bursts than health regen could ever be. Health regen will therefore not help you in fights.

If you need lane sustain, buy something that will help you in fights. Armour, MR, even lifesteal gets bursty late game. Has anybody ever itemised for health regen (except Mundo by buying health)?

Solidair36/2/2015, 3:08:48 AM2 votes

This is kind of a tough question.

There is no item in the game that exclusively gives you health regen. It's always attached to other things. But the health regen is an important thing WITHIN the items it is a part of.

also, I think it's important to think about what GOOD health regen would do. Do we really want health regenerating as fast as mana? that would feel awful.

It's almost completely useless except for the ones you mentioned. Even someone like Soraka seems like she's better off getting health regen from runes than from building it. The health regen items like rejuvenations beads are pretty much just terrible.

I go coin on a lot of supports since the buff.

FantasySniper6/1/2015, 4:15:30 AM1 votes

DrMundo Heimerdinger Garen Chogath can all build health regen comfortably.

But otherwise, it's not something you're looking to stack, and is only a convenient addition to something like item 3074 item 2053

Gankosaurus Rekt6/1/2015, 10:26:55 AM1 votes

It's good on some specific champs, but it's not a universally good stat that every champ needs. Regen tanks (DrMundo Garen Shen ) benefit from having some additional health regen, however they usually get enough from warmogs + Spirit Visage. Outside of these there isn't a lot of solid regen items for tanks as they need to itemize armor/mr/health. More situational stuff i.e item 3190 (if your jungle/support already doesn't have it) item 3056, item 3102 can be good but you don't build these things for the regen, it's more an added benefit.

MasterVidallis6/1/2015, 3:05:52 PM1 votes

It's not useless, it helps stay in lane and can be good late game too during extended sieges to shrug off poke. It's not something you should ever intentionally go for over other stats but the items that have it (hydra, z'rot, banshee's, visage...) are all strong items with other good stats so you'll some anyways. Because of that I think the stat is fine, you don't sacrifice anything to get it really.

FooDang6/1/2015, 3:13:53 PM1 votes

item 1054 All the time.

Reaper Soraka6/1/2015, 3:18:08 PM1 votes

I like to buy regen vs Darius top lane when I am playing Nasus or Udyr. It does eventually build into Warmog's, but to begin it keeps his lane harass much less of a threat. Other than playing against Darius top lane, I do not buy items that have regen for the regen stat at all.

junglerboy166/1/2015, 3:57:52 PM1 votes

on champs like Trundle and Olaf, sometimes getting a little HP regen feels like a lot because of their healing steroids, same with Vlad (although for Vlad, WotA and SV are usually the only sustain you'll get, so no rejuv beads there).

For Olaf and Trundle, if I'm building Hydra and have enough for a pickaxe and either the 2 rejuv beads or the longsword, I actually tend to get the rejuv beads (although that is situational).

On anyone without a built in healing amplifier, buying early health regen feels atrocious though.

WillHealForHonor6/1/2015, 9:18:01 PM1 votes

mundo likes it.. i often do a camp.. take d shield and then 1 ana l bead and head for lane

Wolfess6/2/2015, 11:32:40 AM1 votes

I usually actually start my mundo with 2 rej beads and the rest hp pots, because I honestly don't like doran's shield, plus since i'm gona be chucking hp with Q's i prefer having that passive health regen active. 2 beads = 100% hp regen if i remember correctly, and mundo also has a high natural hp regen, also if i remember correctly. after laning and having maybe 2 or 3 completed items i might sell one or both beads depending on what items i'm going to build to try to counter the enemy team, or I may just use them to go for the warmogs.

and yeah soraka has like super abysmal hp regen... i think I checked it one game at like lvl 13 and i think she had 7 hp/5? I was like HOOOOOOOOOOO LYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY SHIT.

i'm considering getting her a warmogs as well simply because with the hp regen passive on that, it makes up the defficit of one of her heals in a few seconds.

BastionKross6/2/2015, 1:40:42 PM1 votes

Riot purposefully made sure Soraka couldn't build tons of HP regen. They explicitly want your skill at landing her Q to decide whether or not you'll be a healing machine gun.

Mordekaiser on the other hand, I have no idea. I guess Riot thought he was too powerful early on; Because as we all know, he's tearing up the pro scene right now. /sarcasm
