Evil army wants powerful artifact. Villagers defend artifact. Old man reveals that artifact shoots out powerful magical energy that can instantly disintegrate single enemy targets. Bard of course does not like that such an OP item exists and essentially makes it disappear from existence.
Bard is the reason why Death Fire Grasp no longer exists.

So who is the Old guy? only champs had access to DFG, so its probably one of them. However, the only male spellcaster I can think of is Ryze, and he would never have put the scroll where he couldn't actively protect it, so it can't be him...

My favorite part is how the entire video is about Bard, but he only shows up at the very end, he doesn't help the poor guys getting slaughtered for (presumably) a noble cause that HE believes in, and he steals their artifact and leaves them all to die horrible deaths. Some support.

Guys, Swain is the old guy, Swain can build DFG, duh.
That would make sense if only Riot was interested in gameplay/story integration, keeping a connection between the game and the story of the world they created for it (and which really only exists for the game).
But there's the supposed retcon that's been in the works since last fall, so it's not very likely.
