Riven Changes

NOTE: THESE ARE EXTREMELY EXPERIMENTAL, AND MOST LIKELY WON'T GO THROUGH AS SHOWN, IF THEY GO THROUGH AT ALL

Runic Blade Passive Changed too:

"Riven's abilities charge her blade, causing her next basic attack to deal an additional [20% - 50%] physical damage. If Runic Blade damages an enemy champion, Riven gains 20 Edge.
Riven's damage is increased by up to 10% based on how much Edge she has. If she hasn't gained Edge in the last 10 seconds, Riven begins to lose her Edge at the rate of 10 every second.
Bonus Damage: X"

Blade of the Exile (R) - Instead of increasing damage based on missing health, Wind Slash now consumes all Edge to increase damage.

What are your thoughts?

They're gutting a champion who was perfectly fine and giving Kalista the championship skin in the same season. My thoughts are that this might be what makes me quit League.

These changes don't seem too bad, certainly not a 'gutting'. Why do you say that?

Removing her execute

And making it so that you only have 1 stack of runic blade really changes things up

ShinTwist4 votes

No execute, no passive stacks, and Trynd's passive without any way to stay alive in a fight long enough to use it. She's being gutted. She was a squishy burst champion, now she's just squishy.

MisterHealYoGirl1 votes

Well, the ult is still an execute. And if you use the full combo, with all the passive procs, you should get to 100 Edge (the presumable max) by the end of it, leaving your ult at full power, same as always. I was also always under the assumption that you used the passive procs as they came, using your skills to cancel the animations. Is this not true?

It can be for some cancels, but most cancels are used to get her skills off in quick succession, shortening her window of vulnerability.

E/Q2/Tiamat/W/AA-->Q3/AA for example is one of Box Box's favourite ways to start a fight, and with this change it will be just a good way to waste passive procs.

Can you just think a moment without beeing the classic lol player ? She is squishy if you build her full dps. They gutted assassin riven, it's real, but riven isn't an assassin, she is a fighter and they buffed riven bruiser. Did you see that now ALL RIVEN's damage is buffed for something like 10% and more base on her edge? In theory she can deal more damage then now, you should wait and see how she works with this new passive and new bruiser items

The no execute comment is silly to be honest.. The fact that it no longer goes off of health to deal execute damage and can now be used as a huge aoe nuke in team fights is a situational buff/nerf to the ult to be honest. It's entirely circumstantial.

You have a strange concept of "fine"

get gutted.

ModWulf Helhammer2 votes

I'm not sure on the overall passive changes, but the ult changes are just stupid

SaltyKracka2 votes

I rather like the ult change. It means she has to be actually fighting for a while before she can get the maximum damage off of it, rather than just popping it and deleting your wounded squishies at long range because lol ranged execute.

Guy Fox Teemo3 votes

Well's she's a burst squishy champion, if she can't get her combo off quick and kill them, she'll die.

SaltyKracka1 votes

I'm talking more about how she could just pop her ult and snipe squishies if they were wounded.

Guy Fox Teemo1 votes

Yes, it goes by intervals of 25%, i dont' see why sniping squishys is a bad thing?

I think this will end up with her being in a better place at the end. I think it is one of riots 'we found it hard to balance this champion so we are giving her a few kit changes that make her easier to handle and therefore buff/nerf in the future.'

I personally like the ult changes. It removes some of her just there power and makes you work for it to be useful. Basically it becomes and ok to try and kill riven signal for the enemy, which I think ups her counterplay a bit.

She wasn't really strong though lol, in the meta right now she was Kinda meh. She hasn't been broken for quite awhile. These changes seem more overall like huge nerfs to her burst combo. And making her more of Tanky/Dps fighter, that'll probably become more of a problem since she'll get burst from her passive if she fights for long enough and be tanky since her build will change.

She wasn't broken but is generally considered one of the least fun champions in League to play against. So I think that is what they are attempting to change along with her ability to actually receive nerfs/buffs reliably when she needs them.

I guess they want to bring her into the same sort of place as fiora while making her fill a different niche.

idk if buff or nerf but sure gives her some minimal skill requirement

She lost

  • Stacking ability
  • Straight up execute

She gained

  • Higher Damage potential in a straight up duel
  • Potential of higher damage dealt when using wind slash due to not being an execute

If Riven can gap close using 1 or less casts of abilities, she will have significantly higher damage out put if she can stick to the target. She will lose her assassination style. There is no doubt to this.

Changes to help her if she gets fucked by this change

  1. Increase % gained by each stack of edge
  2. Increase shield duration
  3. Increase dash distance
  4. Increase Q distance
  5. Increase base Windslash damage
  6. Increase Windslash edge conversion.

Some things I would like to add. This "experimental" change is a nerf to her versus the tank meta. Her wind slash will be mitigated significantly by armor and HP. I would assume the damage with the consumption of 100 edge will not compensate for the original "missing health" damage versus tanks.

Riven is also gutted when fighting ranged champions. She now must use at least 2 - 3 of her mobile abilities to gap close and when successful, she has one attack with increased damage, which will put her in the lower hand of the duel. Overall, it's not even worth using E Q Q Q to catch up to your opponent as you will be on a major disadvantage at that point.

You can no longer play the passive Riven in a team fight. You must constantly look for targets to attack with Runic Blade in order to maximize damage output. If you're playing behind already from multiple enemy jungler ganks, Riven will be near useless in team fights given that she can't accumulate edge to keep her damage up, and wind slash will barely bring her teammate ahead in terms of damage since she has no edge.

Some changes I think would help this "experimental" change.

  1. The original damage OR the edge increased damage portion of her wind slash should be true damage. This will help balance her out versus the tank meta.
  2. Bring back the stacking of her passive. Except that edge will only generate once after a Q cast. This will help fighting champions with mobility and/or knockback.
  3. Riven generates 20 edge every time her Valor absorbs damage. Can only generate once every cast. This will help a little bit on generating edge in a stand off where enemy teams are poking and Riven have no target to generate edge.
The Sword Saint1 votes

Riven's windslash never dealt missing hp damage - the numbers now are exactly the same as they are on the pbe, except to reach max damage you hit someone who has something like 25% hp. With the edge system you'' do just as much damage on a full hp target, tanky or not, as you would have if they had 1% hp left as long as you have a full edge bar.

I do think it would be helpful to have something like you mentioned where shielding damage generates edge, but if these changes go live I'm sure they have new levers to buff riven with already if shes weak such as how much edge she gets per passive proc, how much % damage she gets for her edge, and how long it takes to fall off.

Aspect Zinc1 votes

Has anyone here even played the PBE? I have yet to lose a game on her with the new changes. Check them out, she didn't lose her old passive. Her new passive stacks on the old passive. The only thing this affects is her ult and the ability to do MORE dmg overall.

  • go into pbe, test the q stacks on minions to see the dmg from old passive.

They will make her less fun to play, removing her execute combos ... please don't do that riot
