Reminder: Sona should be reworked

She's been a problem with balance since her mini rework. She's a very old champion who has amazing potential to be something big but is held back by the fact that she was made forever ago. Riot saw potential in Warwick, you could tell he was an older champion by looking at hit kit and he even felt old to play. Sona is facing the same thing.

Sona's kit has amazing potential to be a REAL maven of the strings. Let her string together different notes to have different spell effects, let her truly rally and buff her allies with her music while debuffing her foes. The potential for a true bard of League of Legends is here, in Sona. As of right now she feels like a poke bot in lane, and she's not even that great at it anymore. Make her a true support, not some mage support. She barely feels like an enchanter, she literally feels like a mage support who has a mediocre heal/heal with a mediocre speed up thrown into her kit.

I've been playing Sona since I first started League back in S3, I used to be a huge Sona fan but I feel like I can barely pick her up now because she' outclassed by so many other enchanters. I used to be a Sona main, but I can't even call myself that since I've barely touched her since she was abused in the ardent sensor meta. Please throw this old champion a bone...

I never really thought she was in need of a rework after her last one, maybe some slight adjustments but not a full rework.

But after all the nerfs they did to her I think she could use one now.

You said it so much better than I and more concisely too.

Tbh her ult should switch her music/pitches to different abilities and double casting ult would cause the cresendo. (kind of like how the old sona with which aura u had on the emotes had different sounds)

Unpopular opinion : I don't like the idea of "Play notes in a certain way to do different things".

I feel like unless they made it so all 3 of her spells do nothing and the song you create is the spell (which, from what I understand, a character from DOTA does exactly that), you end up punishing players or forcing them to do certain things to achieve a specific result.

Like, forcing them to use a spell for no other reason than "I need it for the song" or, on the contrary, not cast a certain spell because "it would ruin the song". I feel it would leave us with a champion that is way too frustrating to play by League standards.

But wouldn't it be just like a more balanced ryze? (by that i mean not having access to a point and click root). His abilties do different things depending on the order you use them.

Well yeah. But looking at his winrate, he also shows why this kinda system doesn't work. People have such a hard time playing him that, even when he is meta worthy, he still has an atrocious winrate.

He's the kind of champion that you have to be one or more step ahead at all times, which is a wonderful idea on paper but, for the most part, is impossible to meet.

Though bringing it back to Sona, a middle point can be met (just an idea, nothing else)). Say if she had something similar to Bard chimes (less randomized hopefully) except they were musical notes, and picking a certain combination of notes would create certain effects. This could let her keep a proper kit, one that could, perhaps, influence what notes are available to an extent.

I'm not nearly experienced enough with Sona to give qualified personal input on the details of her kit, but I agree that she needs a rework, as she is not hitting the right notes (heh) for any kind of kit, beyond just her fantasy. Her abilities have very little potential for mastery, and similarly little interactivity for the most part, and much of the power she has is generic, yet also not particularly creative in its applications. Most modern supports, and champions in general, tend to have power that is more specific, but also more versatile in how it can be used: Bard, Ivern or Rakan, for example, have multiple uses for each of their abilities. By contrast, Sona has literally over ten different effects in her kit, yet tends to play the same way all of the time.

If there is one concern I'd raise at the notion of combining strings to create different spells, a la Invoker, it's that it could risk making Sona inaccessibly difficult if done wrong, whereas currently she is one of the easiest supports to pick up. I think an idea like that could be brilliant, and could really give Sona the versatility she needs, but I also think there needs to be a sliding scale of power versus reliability built into her as well, that would allow her to keep her low skill floor while raising her skill ceiling as needed. Sion and Warwick are examples of VGUs that succeeded in part because they gave those champions abilities that could be used reliability if desired (e.g. detonating their Q or E early, respectively, or using their ults at point-blank range), and in Sona's case, I think it might help if she could still get some measure of baseline power just by spamming spells, even if more judicious use of them should make her immensely stronger.

Agreed. We should start a movement to get her the rework she deserved, a rework where riot finally does what they should've done long ago....

I don't know if I agree. As far as low Elo is concerned, she's still a solid choice. Looking at your season history you have a sum total of 10 ranked Sona games between Season 5 and now. Do you have a different account?

I'm suprised to read she isn't a good poke anymore. True she's a bit more manna dependent but, I think her poke is within a acceptable range.

I can agree to an extent in regards to her healing, she isn't the best, but again she's more than capable.

Over the past season to now I have over 500 games w/Sona. By no means am I saying I'm an expert and I concede I'm low elo. I think she's in a good spot. I feel like it could be better, but a full rework? I'm not sure about that.

Make her work with some form of Rhythm mechanic that increases her effectiveness with timed spell presses , just do SOMETHING riot. :/

I'm just going to drop an idea for a rework I posted on another tread a while back, obviously it's not going to be perfect since I have no way to test it but I strongly believe it would be better than what we have now.

Passive: Powerchord

Sona plays her basic spells as a three spell Powerchord, after casting her first and second spell she puts her basic spells on a 0.5 second global cooldown and after casting her third spell Sona puts all of her basic spells on a longer cooldown, additionally if Sona doesn't cast a spell for 2 seconds during a powerchord all of her spells go on this same longer cooldown. Only the first spell Sona plays costs mana and her basic spells mana cost scales with her level. Additional spells hitting the same target within a single Powercord have only 50% of their normal effect. Sona will gain the effect of all the spells played in her song for her powerchord on hit, IE she can gain a Qx1/Wx1/Ex1 effect. After completing a Powerchord Sona's next basic attack becomes empowered gaining additional magic damage and bonus effects based on what spells she played during her Powerchord.

  • Qx1: Powerchord deals 25% bonus damage

  • Qx2: Powerchord's damage and effect are applied in a 200 unit raduis AoE around the target struck

  • Qx3: Powerchord deals an additional 40% bonus damage, additive with the 25% from Q1 for a total 65% bonus

  • Wx1: Powerchord reduces target damage output by 25% for 2 seconds

  • Wx2: Powerchord reduces target damage output by an additional 25% for a total of 50% and lasts for 3 seconds

  • Wx3: Powerchord reduces target damage output by an additional 25% for a total of 75% and silences the target for the first 1.5 seconds

  • Ex1: Powerchord slows the target by 40% for 2 seconds

  • Ex2: Powerchord slows the target by an additional 20% for a total of 60% and additionally grounds the target for the duration

  • Ex3: Powerchord roots for 1 second after it hits and the slow is extended by 0.5 seconds, lasting 1.5 seconds after the root ends

Magic Damage: 10/lv+(25% AP) Powerchord CD: 14/11/8/5 at 1/6/11/16 (affected by CDR) Manacost: 80/100/120/140 at 1/6/11/16

Q: Sona fires a line missile with a small AoE on target hit which deals magic damage and debuffs enemies hit. Enemies attacked by Sona or her allies with a debuff on them take bonus magic damage and consume the debuff.

Damage: 30/80/130/180/230+(60% AP) Debuff damage: 4/13/22/31/40+(20% AP) Range: 900 (slightly shorter than Karma Q) Radius: 200 Debuff duration: 2 seconds

W: Sona heals herself and a target ally, after 1 second if Sona is still within the cast range and both her and her ally are alive both gain a shield equal to the heal. This shield can stack when a target is healed multiple times. If Sona does not have an ally nearby she can self cast the heal and always gains a shield for half the listed value after 1 second.

Heal/Shield Value: 15/40/65/90/115+(30% AP) Shield Duration: 2 seconds Range: 600 units

E: Sona grants herself and a target ally flat bonus MS for 3 seconds, repeat casts on the same target extend this duration by 1.5 seconds but do not increase the MS amount, Sona will always receive a 1.5 second extension for casts past the first. Additionally targets under this effect gain slow resistance.

Flat MS: 28/36/44/52/60+(0.1 AP) Slow Resist: 15/20/25/30/35% Range: 600 units Duration: 3 seconds

R: Same as live sans the CD reduction on her basic spells since this is now incorporated into the way her passive works.

Just nerf her aura radius to the point that she needs to actually worry about positioning properly Then buff back Q damage or something to compensate

It would be nice if Riot allowed players to fully control Sona's abilities. Hymn and Aria needs to let the player choose who they want to focus. I also wish Power Chord worked differently.

I don't really care about Sona, i'm just excited that rengar is getting his q back. =)

I really liked that suggestion a while back of turning her tag mechanic into something similar to new Urgot's shotguns and Fiora's expose weakness.
