Riot needs to make every champion free

Śhunpo··1 votes·2,073 views

Following the recent events regarding EA I was reminded that Pay 2 play game models are just corrupt, greedy and above all unfair. Riot has dodged this bullet for long enough.

Owning a champion in LoL is indeed gamechanging and the fact of the matter is that it's almost identical to Battlefront II's system, except this time you can pay in game currency to unlock champions directly. This however is not fair to the player since players who do pay for champions have an inherent advantage over said player. Additionally it makes the gameplay experience of newer players feel underwhelming. While I do fully support the notion of players needing to feel accomplishment out of playing a game I do think it's high time to make that accomplishment be getting a good rank in competitive, since this game is almost entirely competitive based now.

Furthermore, I also understand that LoL is free to play....however.....DOTA 2 is also free to play, as is Team Fortress 2. Both of those said games have EVERY hero unlocked and the only paid content are cosmetics. Overwatch is similar, however you do have to pay ~$60 up front for the game. I'm perfectly fine with paying money upfront for an online game with every character unlocked, as opposed to playing a F2p game that scams its players into either wasting ~a year and a half of their life toiling away to unlock all the essential content or to simply blow a majority of their wallet hoping that it will fuel their effort to unlock essential content.

"But what will you use Blue essence for?" Idk....maybe Riot could be generous and allow us to directly earn RP by playing the game for long enough. Overwatch does it, so why not League? This way it makes the game friendly for everyone despite their economic status.

Do not let Riot walk away from this, they've been avoiding this for too long. They're currently sitting at a 1.6 billion USD revenue, they're not poor. Their company as a whole can afford to make every champion free of charge for us as players. Cosmetics can remain as they are now since they don't change the way the game is played.

If Riot must price this game in order to make champions free then they should do so. Enough is enough, stop being deceitful to your players.

Call me crazy, but last time i checked, league is free to play. Battlefront isnt.

If you put money into the game, like people did battlefront, you'd have everything you wanted.

Unless what you wanted was 137+ champions and 8+ years of development for one low price

LoL is free to play? Only if you grind for a year and a half to unlock all of the champions. Oh wait....Battlefront II had a similar statistic of 2100 hours. Yeah, that sounds about right.

That argument is logical, however it's a scummy business practice to market your game as free and not include all of the needed content to play from the get-go.

Expect battlefield 2 costs 59.99$

Leauge costs 0.00$

Also the fact that pretty much every champion in the game has diamond+ OTPs prove that champions arent P2W

The heros in battlefield were just straight up stronger.

Diamond+ OTPs actually had to be new players at one point. Would you disagree with me saying that if they purchased a champion they enjoy playing and want to dedicate time to that they wouldn't have an inherent advantage over someone who's playing a champion they hardly enjoy simply because it's the only available champion at the time? That may not seem like an advantage, however a player having fun is actually a huge advantage in itself in contributing to victory.

Also, League might cost $0, but at this point Riot can pretty much give players every champion free from the get-go and their income will still be insane. Another thing, they could also get away with making EVERYTHING in the game free and they'd still have a good enough income to live out like 5-10 years of their lives. Not to mention that eSport earnings are massive.

Operating the eSports league doesnt make them that much money, I'm actually pretty sure the NALCS has been operating at a loss as almost all start up business' do, although they are hoping to now become profitable moving on with franchising. Also why would you ever expect them to make everything free, they are still a company, and a company is designed to earn money.

Well the LCS does indeed make a lot of Riot's earnings since the arena price etc. does not overtake the profit as every audience member pays to attend. Not to mention that the LCS promotes merchandise as well.

There is 10 free champs on a rotation. There are plenty of cheap champs. Did you personally have an issue when you were new?

I basically just played annie and lux while trying out free champs to see who i liked. Cait was free my 2nd week playing, so I saved up for her. I refunded a couple champs I didnt like after buying them. The casual gamer doesnt play league daily. A few XP boosts and they're going to level up and get that now ~800-ish BE.

My favorite champ is 1350 lol.

This game has had 8 years of DLC lol. You could defiantly buy the OG champs with $60 lol.

I don't know about the OP, but i personally am glad you had so few champs to start with. When i started league, i had never played a moba before. Everything was new. Having 150+ champs would have pushed me away instantly. I much preferred and enjoyed learning the basic mechanics and then going through the champ roster, picking champs that i like the look of and finding a kit that sounds fun. I don't really mind having to grind for every champ, because 90% of the champs don't really interest me and don't fit my playstyle.

Then how did you find out which champion(s) suited you? You most likely looked at one of them and said "well, that one looks cool", so you buy that champion and play it. Wouldn't it be a lot easier if that cool hero were automatically unlocked for you at the start of the game?

jo99011 votes

Like i said, i looked through the roster and chose some that i liked the look and kit of. And while it may have been easier having everything, there wouldn't have been any fun. The way i play multiplayer games is like this: i set up a number of goals and try to achieve them. If its CoD, i'll try to get a gun to gold or a class to prestige. In this game my goal was to find a champ i liked and get it to mastery 5, then repeat, all while having the next champ in mind and working toward earning it. If everything had been unlocked for me at the get go, i would have gone "Oh, this game is kinda cool. I'll play for a bit, but there's no point putting much effort in because there is nothing to earn." And then i would have stopped playing after at most a month.

TLDR I much prefer having to work for and earn new champs. It gave me something to strive for while i was learning the game.

I agree. Also since you're leveling up, everyone else is too. You see more champs as you level up. Low levels are going to mostly be free champ rotations. Makes it easier to learn the game

Let’s also not forget the fact that most people don’t even WANT all of the champions. Most people only buy champs that they actually want. And from someone who’s been playing since Season 1, champions are MUCH more diverse than other characters in games like Overwatch and Battlefront.

While some would contest that rune pages are sorta still pay to win, those can still be bought with in-game currency, and those can still be earned within a reasonable time frame (with the new system, I’d guesstimate 2-3 weeks?). Don’t quote me on the math, though.

And, of course, let’s not forget that they have to make money somehow. Yes, you can buy champions with RP, but simply having bought a champion doesn’t give you an OBJECTIVE advantage over anyone else. Champs fall in and out of meta all the time. Some champs on release are strong (Camille), but some are also weak (Ornn). And you playing champions that you bought does not OBJECTIVELY trump their experience in the game. If people want to buy the champs with real money, that’s their decision. That’s not buying them an “always win forever” card like some other games do. >.>

jo99011 votes

True. And in regards to rune pages, i never needed more then one cause those runes were expensive, and i just stuck to one playstyle, said playstyle being a mage.

League isn't Pay To Win at all (outside of certain skin interactions which are unintentional like the old hitboxes that got fixed). It's a Free To Play game and champions are part of what helps pay Riot whenever players purchase champions through RP. They're a business, and champion purchases are a large part of that business.

Besides, we already have Free Rotation for players to use champions they don't own yet. Also purchasing champions helps block new players from ranked long enough for them to hopefully get a clue about how to play before feeding in those matches.

  1. Riot has a revenue of 1.6 billion USD. They no longer need the money from people purchasing champions. They're a business? Yeah, they also happen to be one of the top businesses on the planet. "But they use all of that money". Yeah, I guess that's why most of the main Rioters live in penthouses lmao. They use all of that money on unnecessary personal purchases as opposed to...y'know...fixing the game as a whole.

They still give the excuse of "our servers cannot handle too many gamemodes at once" and yet they haven't actually put in any effort to address this. If they did URF would be permanent, custom gamemodes would have editable settings and the Crystal Scar would return.

  1. Skins are actually Riot's main source of income.

  2. Free rotation is meaningless if a player wishes to try a specific character from the get-go.

  3. If you look at the model of "Pay2win" it's pretty clear as to what it means. If you don't believe that LoL is P2W for newer players then let me give you an example. Hearthstone at present has over 600 cards, and most of the meta decks and/or fun decks require a lot of legendaries which players are not given immediately. The problem with this system is that it rewards players for paying money directly to Blizzard so that they can enjoy the game more than a F2P player (and likely win vs many players since most players only have enough "dust" to craft aggro decks). Limiting a player in terms of options in what they can play is incredibly rough for the newer playerbase since it's lowering their gameplay experience as a whole and giving players who actually pay for unlocking the champions they want an upper hand.

Oh, so you disagree when I say that Riot has a revenue of 1.6 billion USD? Annnnd you disagree when I say that DOTA 2 and TF2 both give the player EVERY bit of necessary content in order to play the game? Do you disagree when I say that the new player experience is underwhelming?

You sure are adamant in saying that I'm wrong without presenting any actual reasoning.

Tf2 has shit tons of unlockable weapons. I have over 4k hours played and barely have half the weapons. Some of which are just flat out better than others.

New player experience is fine expect for toxicity. Dota 2 gives you too much. Ive heard from plenty of people they jump in and have no clue what to play.

Many people (myself included) enjoyed working towards our first champion and mastering it before buying our second champion etc...etc...

And no the revenue thing was correct but saying 100% sounds better than 95% (its also irrelevant, just because a company has money doesn't mean it shouldn't try to have more. Dont punish people for success)

I mean, Riot had to sink down to Blizzard+EA's level when they implemented loot boxes. It's just a shameless attempt at copying other companies and their success for even more financial gain. "Don't punish people for success". It's not punishing them at all actually since they can still keep their income from cosmetics. It's simply making it much fairer for the newer playerbase.

As for the DOTA 2 argument I heavily disagree. A player can easily try each hero out, or if they're smart they'll read up on it before playing to get the gist of which class they want to play. You want to try someone out in LoL? Sorry, you must play for like 2 and a half hours to unlock that cool 6300IP (BE now) champion. While the sense of accomplishment is somewhat there in your first purchases with in game currency your following purchases are, simply put, painful grinds. With something like 137 champions now that grind is reaching insane levels. The same thing can be said about Hearthstone. Grindy games are fine when there isn't a huge amount of content, however, in Hearthstone's case there are now 600+ cards, which makes it nearly impossible for newer players to enter the game and enjoy it.

jpguy9021 votes

Owning every champ is far far from a necessity to play the game. All competitive players will tell you, that you climb and get good from mastering a small pool of champions.

jo99011 votes

My personal experience from when i was a new player (about a year and a half ago) was very overwhelming. I had never played a MOBA before and i was very happy there was a limited amount of champs.

Hearthstone isn’t really a fair example, though. When you’re dealing with a card game, where effects and strategic utility are hard coded into each individual card, that IS Pay2Win, you’re absolutely right. That kind of system does put a fairly hard limit on skill expression simply because your cards aren’t good enough.

League is not like that. Hardly at all, as a matter of fact. League is HIGHLY skill based, and each champion is only as good as the player behind them.

Think about some champions that have been in the meta. True, you’ve got champs that are really strong on release, like Camille and Yasuo. However, you also have old champions (sometimes due to a rework) that rise back into the meta. Think about Season 2, which brought the pioneering of damage supports. Who pioneered that trend?

Annie. A 450 IP champion helped pave the way for a new meta that has lasted to the current day.

Conversely, who was considers the worst ADC for most of season 7?

Ezreal, a 4800 IP champion. He USED to be 6300, the highest basic Priceline for champions.

So, yeah, league’s definitely not Pay2Win. What’s more, most champions are actually comparatively cheap in comparison to skin/cosmetic costs. I certainly haven’t seen a champ worth as much as an Ultimate skin, that’s for sure.

If it's not pay to win then why are all of the champions locked and there's no alternative way to unlock them outside of the two existing ways, which are play the game for an extremely long period of time or pay money upfront to get them early. You need champions to play the game, and the free champ rotation won't cut it for a lot of people.

OilegibtKoile1 votes

Many have said this already and I can confirm that having all champions locked is really helpful to get invested in the game. I for one played Nami when she was free rotation and because I liked her kit I immediatly started grinding for her . So the first champ I wanted was also one of the most expensive ones but that didn't stop me. Over the course of grinding I saw many other champs and got to know them by playing either with them on my team or against them. Over time I picked up some more champs. Some fit my playstyle, some I bought for trying new roles, but most my champs convinced me by their looks. I picked up Shen bc he's a freaking Ninja, I picked up Leona bc I think she's physically attractive and I picked up Mordekaiser and I even borderline one-trick him because he is METAL AF. I never had the feeling that I was put in a disadvantage because I had no champions and I still don't feel it. I do not plan on expanding my rather limited champion pool as I accomplished basically everything I wanted. Maybe someday I get invested in another champ but this won't be a problem as I hoarded more than enough BE to buy any champ there is and there is to come.

They would get a better reputation with their players, which will in turn make the playerbase grow resulting in more people being willing to spend $$$ on cosmetics. Their profits wouldn't even drop all that much since skins are their primary source of income, not champion purchases.

It's called using your brain. Eventually players who have unlocked all the champions they want (or all the champions in the game) will pay for skins. On average dedicated players will probably get at least 2-3 skins for each of their favourite champions, and with better and better skins coming out that number is likely to rise.

The only flaw to this reasoning is if players quit before level 30 and/or unlocking necessary champions to make them enjoy the game. This however isn't an issue since most of the people I know and talk to have spent at least 2k on this game purely from a cosmetic POV. That isn't uncommon either. If you're talking about the teen to young adult to even adult audience then those individuals likely have jobs. Whenever they get a paycheck if they consider LoL a serious hobby they will blow money on the game since it's only a fraction of what they earn. Repeat this enough times and you get ridiculous numbers spent on this game. After all, what's $2000 if you don't immediately know it's $2000, rather multiple instances of $20-$35.

I'd say that that is research conducted.

Statistics are hardly required when you know how dedicated players function. However, if you do require statistics I'll be sure to hassle a major Rioter until they provide some (or maybe you could do it yourself and help someone else out).

They arent. RP sales are majority of their income. People spend RP on boosts, skins, champions, hextech chests, transfers, There is 0 reason to make all champions free. Also making them free would be unfair to people that already spent RP for champions. They already made runes free. Only thing to spend BE now is champions. Making them free would be blow to their profits.

Link to this? Where are you getting your information/statistics?

Another thing, how do you purchase skins? Through RP. There you go, that's where a majority of the RP goes towards, so thank you for siding with me.

(Also, hextech chests are moreso purchased for skins rather than champions, and transfers+name changes have nothing to do with what I'm discussing since I'm talking about specifically champions. As for it being unfair to people who spent RP on champions. The easy solution, refund their RP. It really is as simple as that since the system does indeed remember each individual player's purchases. Hell, they're good at software programming+coding, they could probably program a bot to do it. If that doesn't work they could always give players who purchased at least 5 champions with RP a limited time sale on most if not all skins. They made runes free since they did actually make the game evidently pay 2 win.)

I never claimed that the playerbase was dropping at all.

"Riot has more qualified people than you or me who know far better how to build up playerbase and reputation." Ah, that must be why the whole death threat backlash occured when ADCs were incredibly underpowered (back when Poppy was busted). That must also be why the balancing team does not know how to make proper judgements as to how to do their job to the best of their ability. That must also be why the game is no longer friendly for the casual player since the game as a whole is modeled to promote eSports and competitive play.

Also, biggest online game in history? Sorry but ah...Blizzard exists. Yeahhh, see, they might have multiple games, all of which have millions of players (WoW alone has 100 million+). Not to say that Blizzard isn't corrupt either, however they're still bigger than Riot. Also Valve lel.

Wait....did you just say that the NFS model works??? You mean the game that used to reward players for discovering secrets in the game or unlocking achievements to unlock parts used for customisation? Funny, because that game is now ruled by loot boxes. I wonder why that is, ah yes it's because it's an easy way of exploiting money out of consumers who enjoyed previous games or games similar to it. You're right, people are buying games, because they want to test out the games or try and salvage them.

The ONLY examples of a loot box system that kinda works is Overwatch and CS:GO. Items from loot boxes DO NOT influence gameplay at all and they DO NOT reward players for paying more than the other. Cosmetic loot boxes are borderline ok due to this. So essentially what you're saying is that it's fine for companies to abuse their playerbase who love their game so long as they're making money? Correct?

We arent talking about game balance here. We are talking about business practices. As for balancing, its done on purpose to rotate strong and weak roles. Its impossible to completely balance game like this. Also what death threats? Game is very friendly for casual player.

We arent talking about game balance here. We are talking about business practices. As for balancing, its done on purpose to rotate strong and weak roles. Its impossible to completely balance game like this. Also what death threats? Game is very friendly for casual player.

What about Blizzard. Their biggest game peaked at 10% of LoL population.

Yes. NFS model works for business. It brings a lot of revenue.

So you think it's fine for a company to exploit its playerbase? Questionable stance.

As for the death threats, read up about what happened regarding Ghostcrawler and how he addressed the meta as a whole for ADCs at the beginning of this year.

Expect it's worked like this for years and they would need to take ANOTHER massive hit to their revenue to pay people back for their money and ip spent. Not to mention many people either don't care about other champions and just stick with who they want, or just buy champions on a whim when they have the IP (BE) for them. This isn't even close to pay 2 win as a pay 2 win model entitles a person who pays money will have a superior advantage and often trump a player who didn't spend a dime. Don't matter to league if you bought Yasuo when I can still manage to beat you with Garen.

Skill and knowledge trump the dolla dolla bill yo.
