Worlds just isn't doing it this year...

Śhunpo··86 votes·17,864 views

The average amount of viewers seems to be dropping based on what I'm seeing so far, games are usually hard stomps or are decided by whichever team left Kai'sa open (I think at this point she almost has a 100% pick/ban ratio), tanks are being replaced by even mages and ADCs in the top lane, we only ever see hook supports or Rakan, and mid lane is just a mage fest. Also Jesus Christ, Pantheon? He nearly has a 100% ban rate so far lmao.

Oh, and icing on the cake, everyone dies in mere seconds at best, and the most hype play would be watching Kai'sa launch her long-ass skillshot at baron to steal it.

But hey, we saw Ziggs once, so I'd say that's definitely a plus.

For me personally, I didn't enjoy a single match. So far it's almost been on par with how bad Ardent Worlds was, and how much of a clusterfuck Juggernaut Worlds was. It's not fun watching what's usually 1-10 broken champions being abused to win. Their bullcrap isn't enjoyable as a spectator, or at least one that also plays the game and understands what's going on.

It's not just broken champions either, players are just trying their best to avoid fights thanks to damage meta, and again, as a spectator, that's not enjoyable to watch. Now, full balls-to-the-wall isn't fun to watch either as that usually means the meta is quite devoid of complex strategy, however, I'd much rather watch that instead of 10 players who supposed to be the best of the best avoiding in each other in a game that's supposed to have at least SOME high octane situations.

So, for me, it's most definitely not cutting it. My personal opinion probably doesn't hold much value in this day and age, just thought I'd get it out there.

Honestly, I hope Riot acts on all of this after Worlds, because the matches so far are just exposing each and every reason as to why this game isn't fun for each role respectively and as a whole. They need to tone down damage, fix the runes, remove elements from overloaded champions, fix item stats to be less homogenous and overbearing, fix the mage class, fix the assassin class, fix the tank class, fix the jungle....

Like seriously, they have a LOT to do, and if they refuse to act on it I'm genuinely concerned about League in the near future, as the only reason it really saw a resurgence in popularity was because of K/DA, and now that that has passed...I don't know what they're going to do. Maybe their new fighting game will help introduce more players to the game?

Still, they should probably fix the game...

The real games haven't even started, play-ins always feature wildcard shitters with match quality lower than regional brackets. I'd hold my judgement until worlds actually starts and real teams play eachother.

I'm definitely holding out for the later matches, as I was skeptical during season 6 Worlds as well, but then out of nowhere ROC vs SKT happened and I was on the edge of my seat legitimately enjoying myself.

I'm simply expressing my concerns so far.

Well, that, and the fact that my main points are likely not going to change even in later matches as this meta is a complete mess. Still, if I see something unique like back when Fervor of Battle Leona was picked (during Ardent meta no less) my opinion will definitely change for the better, even if it is for one game, at least it will be a highlight for me.

But you are talking about viewer counts dropping which is something you really can't comment on. Play-ins have always been something people aren't interested in watching and this season the #3 seeds from major regions aren't expected to get out of groups (outside of maybe DWG) so there is honestly no point in watching them. It's not that the season or the meta is bad, but that the teams participating in these matches aren't interesting or good.

Śhunpo6 votes

I can comment on it, viewership was still higher last year and in previous years (bar before season 6).

GonahtanuGepardi12 votes

Based on what information?

Śhunpo1 votes

Based on my own eyes and statistics...

GonahtanuGepardi3 votes

So not based on any actual concrete information. Got it.

Śhunpo2 votes

Are you saying statistics aren't concrete information O. o I can clearly see the ~75k people watching on Twitch, compared to the ~82k (from memory) from last year. If I am wrong I'm willing to be the bigger man and admit it, however I well and truly doubt I am.

They are but you didn't provide any statistics. Just saying you are using statistics isn't concrete information.

These are not statistics. These are numbers pulled from a hat.

Here are some statistics

https://dotesports.com/league-of-legends/news/damwon-vs-flamengo-957000-peak-viewers-worlds-2019

There are news everywhere telling league is breaking its records already.

So why make a massive thread about "The damage meta is making this game suck ass" if you also know that no one wants to watch the play-ins?

Actually almost all of your points are completely wrong so far. Kaisa is 8th highest played and second highest adc at 67% P/B (Xayah is 93%) with a negative winrate, the most played top laners are Gangplank, Renekton and Gnar by a large margin, Mid lane has variety with Galio, Akali, Irelia, Noc being played (Qiyana and Panth would be very high priority if they weren't perma banned) and I believe trist is the only adc in top lane with 2 games played. You are correct on support being primarily Rakan or Hook champ.

Also as other people have already stated this is play-ins so the quality of games is going to be much lower then what we will find in groups and especially knockouts. The viewership will also be much lower for both this reason and the teams being shown are generally less popular then the bigger names such as C9, G2 or SKT.

your thread is like someone saying the rugby World Cup isn't delivering in its group stages. it hasn't even started yet according to most people, like me, when we get to knockouts we can talk about whether it's delivering or not.

Śhunpo1 votes

I still watch the sports during group stages though...and League is a game which is apparently "growing" in numbers, thereby, more people should be watching on average than previous seasons.

the world cups are judged on the numbers viewing during the finals, because not everyone cares enough to watch the group stages. hence why people get paid to watch all the "filler" inbetween the real contests, and to report upsets. that aside has worlds even started yet? it's play-in's lol.

Just wait till group stage starts and you will see the true clusterfuck with G2 and Fnatic trying out wacky picks and getting to semis using them.

The thigh guy29 votes

Who would have thought people don’t want to watch one sided stomps.

KVbqbFsC8e4 votes

Wildcard teams are much better than they used to be. None of the games have been one sided stomps.

Mihalikb6 votes

They are one sided stomps not in the sense that the teams are skill missmatched. They are one sided stomps in the sense that most games turn into snowballs where whichever team got a bit ahead ends up murdering the other team in that game, not because suddenly their opponents aren't playing well, but because there's nothing they can do.

We are just seeing the same thing we are seeing in SoloQ. Games turn into one sided snowballs that you just can't stop.

Hayaishi217 votes

Pro play is too different to the game i play on a daily basis. Why would i care for it? It's an entirely different game, no point watching for me.

SoryInAdvance5 votes

Yeah, you can try to emulate what they do all you want but the main difference is the team synergy that you can never achieve in an online game with random people. It's basically picking a team you want to win and then watching a drawn-out weighted random number generator for which team will eventually end the game.

DOUBLE TAPPED E1 votes

Well they could add voice comms in solo queue for starters. Overwatch has it and they haven't been sued yet. Hell most people on Overwatch don't even talk, but the games where people are doing callouts go so much more smoothly. Just mute someone if they say something you don't like.

People will abuse the system but honestly if you aren't mature enough to hear a couple bad words before you press the mute button you probably shouldn't have permission to use the internet in the first place.

SoryInAdvance3 votes

Definitely a solution. I personally don't really like talking to my random teammates that much, particularly if I'm soloing. And I would rather play with music in the background or something than hearing people trash-talking our own team, but if I mute them, then I'll be missing all of the callouts because they probably won't be pinging things much, if at all, and definitely won't be typing anything into the chat.

I've got a friend that always complains about how hes in bronze even though he watches pro play and "knows what to do"

It always gives me a laugh.

KVbqbFsC8e13 votes

Pretty silly to judge Worlds by just the play-in stage. And judging from your post, of "players trying their best to avoid fights", its very clear that you haven't actually watched any of the games, as the Wildcard teams, particularly the Asian ones, play very aggressively.

Śhunpo4 votes

No, I've watched like 2 sets of matches so far. True, there were some aggressive games, but on average players are avoiding fights for quite a long time (although this isn't a new thing, it's been this way for years; it's just gotten worse this year). I'm willing to admit that I'm probably wrong on a lot of cases, I'm just commenting on what I've seen so far.

Even when the teams I watched were playing aggressively that can still come back to another one of my points being that I'm watching a broken champion getting abused. Again, that's not all too much fun to watch. Then again, that's just pro play in general, but then....it's gotten a lot worse this season.

Isabel8 votes

pfffffffft only watches 2 sets of games and complains how boring it is. Ok!

Śhunpo1 votes

Yes, that's like 6 games lol. That's quite a lot of playtime!

People say this every fucking year and every year it's wrong.

It also sounds like you're not even watching it since nothing you said can be applied to the meta its in.

You're just making this post since you want to hate on something nothing else please just go to rant for your meaningless anger.

Yordle Xayah8 votes

Uh... as someone who is very invested in the competitive scene I have to say: It's just Play-In stage

Last night I couldn't be bothered with the DWG group and didn't watch a single game and barely cared for Splyce, Isurus, UOL and Clutch. I heard some of the Brazil games got record views, but other than that you have to wait for the main event for things to kick in in viewer count. You can't possibly expect the same numbers for the Play-In HKA group than you would for the SKT/FNC/RNG group.

'Mid is a mage fest'

With LeBlanc (AP assassin) being the most picked at 10 games.

Syndra (Burst Mage) being second most picked at 7 games.

Akali (AP assassin) third with 4 games.

Then we have Corki (magic damage carry), Galio (AP bruiser) Lissandra (Control mage?) and Ryze (balance abomination, also a mage) all having 3 games played.

It hardly looks like the mage fest you're claiming it to be, in fact it looks quite varied and this is just the play ins, there's even been things like Renekton, Trist and Nocturne mid.

breast milk7 votes

there's too many people working on the game, everything is streamlined and yes they do force people to play the way they want. remember when in the same worlds people would go different builds on ezreal? or even vayne.but now everything is so streamlined and riot forces the meta too much now.

FSRER6 votes

Riot will eventually realise that with this balancing they are losing their playerbase and once they do, they will realise that less players means less money so, they will be forced to fix the balancing, if it is not too late by then

Kovorix6 votes

From my gaming expierience over the 15 years I play video games. They will realize when it is to late and everyone is happily playing better games.

They lost around a half of their playerbase in only a couple of seasons, and still making the same id poor mistakes...

Yets42404 votes

Not to mention their revenue, not even profits, but gross revenue was down an entire third last year from the previous.

ArtumisPrime6 votes

Here's the thing. They don't give a shit about the western playerbase at all.

NA, EUW, EUNE, and several of the smaller regions could all disappear from the game one night...and RIOT would not give a fuck, so long as China and the eastern markets still existed. Asia comprises something like 10x the playerbase of all the western regions combined. China alone is 6-7x all the western regions combined.

I think the only match I watched was the one were I left the stream open when I went eating something. All other games I watch for around 5 mins then did something more fun. I will watch finals again as I like the opening ceremonies but that is all.

I've always followed the play-ins to follow potential upsets, but this year has been a complete snooze fest

ProfDrDeath3 votes

This year's play-ins also have few really interesting match-ups, imo. Who cares about Clutch or Splyce, compared to last year's C9 and G2? And LCK's third seed in play-ins pretty much had the expected outcome of stomping over their competition. Meanwhile, HKA/LK/MEGA group was so bad you'd want to gouge your eyes out...

O Fallen Scholar3 votes

I don't watch worlds at all but I don't think game has "that" many issues u listed. There's always somekind of meta. U get used to it. Or not.

GucciLordFeet3 votes

To all the people defending this please read what you type. It doesn't matter if its only play ins, usually all the games are good. Also as for the later stage matches between big names, there is no way they aren't going to play the same bullshit. I can give you all 10. Kaisa thresh vs xayah rakan. Mid is ryze or whatever safe waveclear champ like syndra. Top is a joke and I feel bad for the pros stuck with this role. JG has variance but it's such a boring role as it's just feed bot.

Thilmer2 votes

So Worlds are more or less like the normal game, then: Tanks being bullshit, absolutely anything except tanks on toplane, overpowered champions being pick or ban…

Josh Sand5 votes

Yea. I've been trying real hard to watch, but the games are so incredibly boring.

On the bright side, Season 9 is almost over. Hopefully season 10 will be a strategy-based meta again.

WoonStruck3 votes

It won't. Riot will make it a point to make season 10 even worse than 9, as always.

Jennifer4202 votes

while eu is still waiting for msi rewards, we now also wait for the worlds song. but i guess thats another budget cut riot did lol.

weird how they cut more and more if the game is "not dying" and there "arent any problems" as lol reddit tries to make you believe...

ReportsR4Losers2 votes

Apparently, in Asia, people play in free wifi cafes that have limited time usage. In an effort to cater to these people, Riot decided to desecrate the game by making it easy to end in 20 minutes instead of an hour, allowing these Asian cafe players to finish their game before getting kicked out. Yes, the game sucks now, but at least those few Asian players are happy, so it's all worth it right.
