Riot aren't the only ones ruining this game.....The community also is.

Seriously, we went from a fun loving community who just wanted to play the game because we enjoyed it to metaslave egotists that would rather play to win than actually have fun. I would say that this is ok if it was exclusively happening in ranked, however this is not the case, these same metaslave egotists have infested every single gamemode and it's impossible to enjoy yourself while playing LoL as a result.

Let me elaborate, URF was fun when people just played whoever seemed fun to them, then along came the play to win tryhards who swiftly turned the gamemode into a "I didn't ban this champ, guess we lose" scenario. Normal games as well are impacted since all I see EVERY game are the same picks, never anything interesting or innovative. I'd love to see Yorick, but all I see is fucking Darius and co. top lane. I'd love to see Lux mid but all I see is Zoe and Swain. I'd love to see some more Mordekaiser or Ashe, but all I see is Jhin. You get the picture. There should be more emphasis on actually playing for fun in casual gamemodes at least than playing to win.

I can understand if a champion is fun for someone, but when someone is playing a champion in a "fun" gamemode just to win that's when I just feel like walking away from the keyboard and making some more food, because there's nothing interesting about that. I've crushed my fair share of metaslave tryhards, but it's not satisfying at all, the entire game feels moreso like you just want to get back at them for ruining your fun than you actually having fun.

Not only that, but everyone in this community is so toxic because of their repressed emotions in regards to League. Whether it be due to Riot, bad past games, bad past teammates or just life events League players now see League as a place where they can unleash their emotions.

Everyone is saying "Hurr durr Riot is ruining this game, game's dying because of Riot" however in reality it's also the community, we've festered into a cesspool of tryhards and toxic individuals; as more "play for fun" players are just choosing to leave for games which actually feel fun or just quitting gaming in general to move on with life. Sure, Riot has completely ruined this game for almost everyone, but if I'm being honest I hate this current community more than I hate Riot. If I even do semi-bad I get "?" pinged, flamed and reported. If I pick a non-meta champion the same thing happens. If I try to have fun, again, same thing....

Moral of the story, we need to somehow find our way to our roots and emphasise the "game" aspect of League as opposed to forcefully turning it into a competitive sport which only appeals to one type of person, egotists.

Because you have to be super competitive to have fun in this current game.

When the game is so snowbally and damaged packed, a little mistake costs you the game. A split second that you didn't pay attention and got in a Lux Q behind your creeps in a safe spot, and bam you're dead (it's just an example) . Oh you didn't react to a Wu being a screen away? Well, you're dead. You didn't notice Pyke's water, bam you're dead. This is the game now. You gave first blood? Your opponent now destroys your lane. Not counter ganked that Yi when he went bot? Well now he's 2/0 and you nearly lost the jungle game.

This is the game right now, it forces you to be highly competitive or you can't enjoy it

While I can't speak to this personally, I know this isn't true. There are plenty of people who (claim to) have fun not being super serious while sticking to normals and aram.

A lot of people think its fun to troll people.

(And "no", I'm not saying that playing non-META picks is trolling)

Can confirm.

I've been playing Rakan with Predator, full AP/movement speed. No, I'm not trolling. Yes, I've been winning a lot of these games.

^ This...

But I would argue its more than just this as well.. The champion designs for the last 3 years has been so toxic and unfun to play against, with so much utility/damage smashed into their kit that it becomes an aggravating and frustrating experience it makes people have a short fuse...

You can't just "have fun" in a game where you're up against yet another zed, or zoe who can zone you 3 screens away even if you get a kill on them, and get free lane, and if you dare close in you get half your hp chunked out with a high risk of them all inning you for a free kill..

ontop of that, when the game can be decided so quickly and with 1 bad play, like explained in the quote, you have no room to just "have fun". You can't just mess around, and get into silly fights, or try silly things, when that 1 fk up can literally cost you the game...

ReshiKillim3 votes

I entirely disagree with that. I have a ton of fun without being super competitive, and when people are getting super competitive it starts leeching the fun out of the game. While competitiveness is perfectly fine in ranked, the issue is that people are getting hyper competitive, and treating norms and the RGMs, both of which are meant to be easy going and for fun, like it's ranked.

While the game is definitely high on snowball this season, Riot's nerfing much of the domination tree damage runes soon, which means burst, especially early game burst, will be getting toned down significantly.

So am I supposed to just sit back relax and have fun in a game like this? Whole team negative kd mid game by a lot. Me having to do everything I can to just keep the game going into late game in hopes of team coming back. Its not fun, one person feeding usually means gg right there. But 4 feeders?

Like come on man this isnt fun to play anymore, and this is almost every game it never gets old. One game = 1-3 feeders. Every season before this itd be 0-1 feeders, and the one that feeds is usually getting stomped by a smurf or just trolling.

And yes the Jax is 11/9, but 4 minutes before that he was 4/8, so i had to solo carry my team for 33 minutes while they kept dying over and over making it harder.

I agree with the thread in general but there are many flaws in it. People like winning, people can find winning to be fun. "fun" is a subjective term that people need to stop using like it's an objective term. What you might find "fun" others might not and vice-versa. Calling people who are competitive "egotists" also doesn't help your case, there are plenty of competitive people who aren't egotist just like there are plenty of non competitive ones that are egotist. You really aren't being any better than those "egotist competitive players that only care about winning" by telling them how to play "casual" modes

If you want to play a casual mode then I don't see why you need to smurf while playing your best champion and flaming/BM'ing in all chat. Save that for ranked.

Winning is fun? I agree, however ranked exists for a reason, if they enjoy winning so much then they should set their sights on that mode of play.

Except the custom game scene is dead because Riot killed it off following the removal of the Crystal Scar and even then you're not testing it against actual players, thus you don't know if the build is good. As for the so called custom gamemodes within custom games, they're dead as stated.

No it is not. Games want you to have fun. That's why League is dying and other games are succeeding, because they are able to balance having fun and wanting to win around about equally. I can play any fighting game and still have fun even while getting my ass kicked, so long as I can do one stupid thing that will make me laugh. I can play Chess and make stupid moves all for the sake of experimentation and fun and still feel like I'm learning. These things do not occur in League for me anymore, every time I get my ass handed to me I just feel like getting revenge on my opponent for picking something frustrating.

Play ranked if you want to win and that's your primary goal, that's all I'll say.

Riot changes the game to the point that it is flustering to the playerbase.

You have streamers that some hit the "I am the best" mentality and they can do no wrong, and that inevitably bleeds into the community.

Add that to already regular trolls, and unsportsmanlike players, and it just destroys all fun in the game really. it sucks

Yep, I'm honestly getting sick of dealing with the people who ruin the fun by overdoing "tryharding" in casual gamemodes, ruining the fun for everyone else in the gamemode, or in our current case forcing everyone to go meta picks, making the game incredibly dull and boring. And then you have trolls and flamers....yikes.

This has been going on a long time. There's a reason nobody gets to play URF anymore. After the second time it came out, people stopped picking whatever champion seemed fun, and you saw Shaco, Lux, Ezreal, etc., become pick or ban, because winning matters even in URF of all places apparently.

3TWarrior1 votes

but that happens in every game mode? people pick what is fun for them, whether that's winning or experiencing something new with their champion

I loved twisted fate in urf

keystones and varying other things made it where URF is just a collective bull-rush, and worse in ARURF because the players are barely involved in it. ARURF is decided by builds and champions received

SuperLuigiLXIV1 votes

No, we have ARURF instead of URF because after the second time we got URF, people started spamming the easiest champions, and so Shaco, Lux, Ezreal, etc., all became pick or ban. Nobody played whatever just for fun, they played what would win them the game in a mode that essentially doesn't matter and where winning isn't the point.

And so Riot rightfully changed that up. I'd rather have URF from the very first time it came out than ARURF, but I'd rather have ARURF than any time after the first URF.

Fun game modes shouldn't revolve around how to win, and Riot will continue to do things to put a stop to that.

3TWarrior1 votes

okay, but that didn't stop players from playing it for fun? I did well with twisted fate and I loved him, yet he wasn't a meta champ

I only saw him played one other time

Ahri Anivia Chogath Corki DrMundo Draven Fiddlesticks Gangplank Heimerdinger Illaoi Jayce Karma Karthus Kennen KogMaw Lissandra Malzahar Morgana Nami Nasus (ap nasus is a beast XD) Nocturne Olaf Singed Sion Sivir Swain Syndra TwistedFate Urgot (who got a special video made about him and other top picks in urf despite that he wasn't popular XD) Varus Vayne Twitch Velkoz Viktor Xerath Yasuo Zilean Zyra

those were all viable champions just on my preferred playstyles alone (except yasuo. He's a special mention that his playstyle could be changed entirely to a defensive tank!

they weren't crazy, but then again, not everyone wanted fizz or vlad or some of the newer champions that just do too much

pretty large list for champs that weren't pick or ban

SuperLuigiLXIV1 votes

None of which disproves or even relates to what I said. What's your point?

3TWarrior1 votes

"nobody played whatever just for fun"

now it's pray that you get something you want or who knows what will happen

it's also worth mentioning that such champions were fairly commonly picked

the champions that had the most trouble with the mode were tanks, fighters and bruisers, which a lot of people end up with now when they don't want to play them

ARAM is different because the roles aren't supercharged but ARURF...i'd still play it but only because I could at least HOPE to get the champion I wanted...

SuperLuigiLXIV1 votes

I'd rather have it random than allow tryhards to play whatever wins them the game above all else.

At least this way there's a CHANCE to have a good time.

3TWarrior1 votes

yep, nothing like a team of soraka, karthus, janna etc against fizz, vladimir, blitzcrank, etc

totally a chance for fun and totally a chance for unfun...it's RANDOM, no wait, it't only PARTIALLY RANDOM

why not try to be creative with what champions you have available and achieving results instead of complaining that someone else had something they wanted to use?

of course, it would help if riot would start filtering out some of the troublemakers in the mode like they did at first

SuperLuigiLXIV1 votes

Because there are no meaningful results.

That's my point. The game mode isn't supposed to be about WINNING. It's supposed to be about having FUN.

And it's not fun to play against or alongside the same shit over and over.

3TWarrior1 votes

okay, but at the same time, it's NOT FUN to end up with a completely unviable or boring pick in URF

for instance, although I could play yasuo as a tank, I do not want to

for instance, I could play singed, but I do not want to, I could play nunu, but I do not want to

I like ARAM , ARURF is get lucky or split push

I completely disagree. You play games to win, particularly team games. If you dont want to win, go play a game that isn't based on being part of a team. You dont get to dictate whether others want to win.

The community is terrible because Riot allows them to be terrible. This game has terrible matchmaking, promotes smurfs, and allows people to do whatever they want in game as long as they dont purposely feed or use hate speech.

I dont care if people dont want to win. They just need to play games where their team doesn't depend on them.

I'm new and awful. But I try to learn and get better. Nothing worse than someone who doesn't care how the team does as long as THEY are having fun.

PhDs Nuts5 votes

The community is always bad for extremely popular global games. The company is supposed to be some sort of general constant presence, not gradually degrade the game or spend a year just tossing dart boards at the wall and changing the game based on which balloons pop.

100% agree. Can't even play an ARAM without some EGO "ranked card" person stating how much better they are than us and how EZ it was to beat us.

Like dude... It's an ARAM, you got 5 point and click hard CC mobility champs, and we got a bunch of melee.... in a meta that it takes half a second to kill someone... No fuckin wonder you won. Not like we get to pick our damn team comp or anything.

But i am wrong if i tell them to shut the fuck up... And i get punished xD. But yet ego maniac guy gets to insult people non stop and keep feeding his ego more and more.

This game is just... Not fun anymore. Wins aren't enjoyable, and losses have reached a whole new level in terms of "you can't do ANYTHING AT ALL".

Then the people who abuse said broken things, feed their egos, and think they are actually better than others, just rub it in your face more and more.

I guess good job you right clicked me once for 90% of my health while i was stuck in an endless AoE CC fest? Pat on the back? Cookie? Want some fries with that ego?

FixHealsRemoveGW3 votes

I agree that the community is ruining the game, for slightly different reasons though. But on topic, playing meta is what you do in a competitive game. It has nothing to with being egoistic or not enjoying the game.

The real problem is negativity, it affects everything:

  • the fun
  • critical thinking
  • how you solve or rather not solve problems
  • how you play the game
  • how you learn or rather not learn from mistakes
  • how you deal with different opinions
  • self-awareness
  • your ability to adapt
  • teamwork
  • and it slowly leads to other players being negative too
  • and last but not least all of that together makes it impossible for Riot to do anything right
Elkington VI3 votes

The community is merely a symptom. The source of the problem lies with Riot and their decision-making.

If the community seems less "fun-loving" and bitter it's because Riot has sculpted the game to be this way, with all the changes they've made over the years in heavy favor of competitive play.

Riot doesn't really cater to the fun-loving, casual side of the community anymore, so some bitterness/discontent is understandable.

The community is the reason the rport system does not work that well.

People ar complaining that inters are so hard to be caught by the system, but that is only because riot has to make sure reports for "intentional feeding" do not get a 1/3 Riven top banned, because she got gankes 10 times. Since the community does not take the "intentional" aspect seriously, they have to account fo that.

IF the community would only report actual inting, then riot would be able to punish these wuicker and more frequently, but with you reporting your jungler for inting, because he stole your kills, or reporting your adc because he took your red buff, you leave riot no other choice but to use a system, that accounts for your report to be most likely false.

I honestly don't understand why someone would play this game if they aren't trying to win. Like short of playing with a group of friends and just trying random stupid shit, why would you waste yours and 9 other peoples time playing with no intention of trying to win? Like you can still lose and have fun, don't get me wrong... but if you are going into a game trying to lose or even not trying to win at all, you are an asshole.

The other big issue is that often losing doesn't net you anything. Like there isn't much you learn when one of your lanes goes 1/10/0 by the 15 min mark because they refuse to stop making clearly bad plays. Where is the fun in dropping 20-30 mins into a game where you "lost" in the first 10-ish mins? And in my opinion the worst are those who have clearly won but refuse to finish the game. There is nothing more rage inducing then a team that drags out a clear victory.

I'm all for people being able to enjoy the game, but there are points when it's pretty clear that someone's "enjoyment" of the game is only there to piss other people off.

I mean, a player can flame another player and that's their way of fun, so why can't a casual player in a casual gamemode just relax and not try to win 100%? It's not like they're trolling, they just want to play their way. E.g. I play the new Akali, I'm really fed, but instead of doing the boring thing and ending the game I try to constantly go for 1v5s since it's only a normal game and I want to test my limits on this champion, as well as the champions limits. Is that trolling?

There is "not trying to win 100% of the time" and then there is "i'm going to play Garen support, because my team wants a 'tanky' support"

As for 1v5, are you causing your team to lose a clearly "won" game because you want to dick around? Are you and/or your team hanging around the nearly dead enemy nexus waiting for their team to respawn so you can kill them for a 4th time inside their base? If yes, then you are trolling.

If it's a casual gamemode it's fine to dick around to have fun so long as you're not intentionally feeding and all that. Ranked is a different story though.

so long as your dicking around does not negatively effect other players, go nuts. once it does you are being an asshole.

People seem to have this idea that it's only trolling if the player "runs it down mid", you can easily "try" to win your lane but troll the hell out of your team by choosing a champion that you know is going to loss.

Again you can have fun in the game and not be 1000% dedicated to winning (only meta champs, only meta strats, etc), but your fun should not come at the cost of 4-9 other players being miserable.
