Sona should be reworked

Heckin Support··85 votes·6,090 views

She's been a problem with balance since her mini rework. She's a very old champion who has amazing potential to be something big but is held back by the fact that she was made forever ago. Riot saw potential in Warwick, you could tell he was an older champion by looking at hit kit and he even felt old to play. Sona is facing the same thing.

Sona's kit has amazing potential to be a REAL maven of the strings. Let her string together different notes to have different spell effects, let her truly rally and buff her allies with her music while debuffing her foes. The potential for a true bard of League of Legends is here, in Sona. As of right now she feels like a poke bot in lane, and she's not even that great at it anymore. Make her a true support, not some mage support. She barely feels like an enchanter, she literally feels like a mage support who has a mediocre heal/heal with a mediocre speed up thrown into her kit.

I've been playing Sona since I first started League back in S3, I used to be a huge Sona fan but I feel like I can barely pick her up now because she' outclassed by so many other enchanters. I used to be a Sona main, but I can't even call myself that since I've barely touched her since she was abused in the ardent sensor meta. Please throw this old champion a bone...

she needs to not have auto targeted abilities, when she's strong she lacks the same counterplay as ADC because there is no way to counter rightclicking or auto targeted abilities

Gosu is just as garbage he litterally plays Vayne. All he does is rightclick and flash some spells and you've made him a god. I've seen better adc players in mid diamond

Snowman Arc2 votes

This. The guy can only play Vayne (and maybe other ADCs that only really depend on autos, like Twitch, I guess) and he isn't even that great. Most, if not all, pro ADCs far outclass him, even at this signature Vayne, and also I've seen other mid-Diamond / Master ADCs being far better and more versatile then him.

Do people really think this? I found it funny, not like Sona has the one of the lowest base HP and a few pretty hard counters. She abuses bad players, and supports good ones once you are in higher Elo

Sadly, this is actually a very very very common belief amongst the bronze community. They don't understand: she has no control who she can damage, no control who she can heal. Single-target spells are exponentially more reliable, since you CHOOSE who you target. Skillshots have to be aimed, but at least you get to aim at who you want to target. Also, auto-target spells can still miss, they can still be cast outside of range and then you've burnt a cooldown and very precious mana. You don't even get to see your cast range when you miss, like you would a skillshot.

I would rather play a skillshot healer like Ana, than play Sona. Lili gets STRONG 2-second cooldown heals BECAUSE they're auto-target that she can't control and then she can still blind 4 enemies simultaneously. I would rather play Lucio over Sona, since he's literally a better version of her original kit. When Blizzard saw OG Sona, they liked the concept and improved on it. When Fearless saw Sona, he said,"Gut this shit into the ground. Make sure she never gets played professionally again."

Hence why I've been buying a buncha stuff during Blizzard's holiday sale, meanwhile Rito doesn't get even 1 fucking penny from me.

Man this made me think that reworking her into something like Invoker from dota would be really cool. you can make different melodies with her abilities that do different things depending on the order you use them.

Shepherd o Souls2 votes

lowest iq champ turned into the highest iq champ, that would be ironic but this game needs an invoker and sona is perfect for it. You still mash buttons anyway, just in tune.

TheThundersRoar2 votes

It's a great idea, but Invoker wouldn't really work in League.

Invoker works in Dota because there are meaningful mana costs and meaningful cooldowns, neither of which exists in League. If Sona becomes Invoker she'll become broken in LCS play, and then get gutted like Kalista or Rek'Sai.

Agreed, sadly riot already has planned Swain Irelia Aatrox reworks in that order so a soba rework probably won't be coming anytime soon*[sg-janna]*

Daedric Etwahl6 votes

But Swain and Irelia are full VGUs, no? Compared to some other champs, Sona doesn't really look all that outdated, she actually looks pretty nice

Honestly a rework without a full VGU might suffice. I know the last one we had was the Ult passive rework, but that was such a basic change. Something more akin to what they did to Xin or RekSai, but a little more in depth.

Remlap12232 votes

Her OG kneecapping came with a texture update, that's why she doesn't look like complete ass.

She's probably not going to get a rework or visually upgraded because she's got an ultimate skin. Unfortunately all the cool kids with super expensive skins will probably not be reworked anytime soon.

Sadly, that includes Yi, Udyr, and a couple others.

Daedric Etwahl12 votes

Spirit Guard Udyr and DJ Sona are completely different cases, though.

SG Udyr is basically "normal Udyr but better"

DJ Sona comes off as a different personality, a completely different music style. She's quite different from the canon Sona. There's no reason DJ Sona should stop Sona from getting an update, since she doesn't really need to be visually updated that badly.

Blackstone013 votes

SG Udyr was his visual update.

Muzét2 votes

She is outdated, the last time I played her Arcade I felt bad for how sad her textures was.

Daedric Etwahl3 votes

Yeah, Arcade does look pretty trashy (I mean, have you SEEN her face? It's terrifying!) But the rest of her skins don't look half bad. They could give Arcade the Pentakill treatment. Pentakill Sona went from her worst skin ingame to my second favorite skin after Sweetheart, she looks so nice now.

Meanwhile, the rest of Sona, even her default, actually look quite nice!

Fairyfleur1 votes

I honestly love default so much. The splash is so pretty and the model isn't bad either.

Although if they do rework her it'd be nice to see some snowy effects on her auras in Silent Night (or whatever her music will be changed to.)

Daedric Etwahl2 votes

Sona's default splash art is so amazing, I adore it so much. It's a wonderful mix of grace, beauty, and cuteness that I simply adore. It's definitely that little smile playing on her lips. And her ingame model is very pretty as well. Her face, if you get a chance to see it, is actually really pretty!

Really, the ONLY complaint I have about Sina's model is the fact that her hair insists on floating behind her at all times like that.

There's a lot they could do to make each of her skins better and different from each other. My personal favorites are Sweetheart and Pentakill (I actually hate Arcade and DJ) Sweetheart is just the cutest damned thing I've ever seen (even the name Sweetheart Sona just melts my heart it's so cute) and Pentakill Sona was made very pretty with that update they gave her

Fairyfleur2 votes

I like Silent Night and Sweetheart the most. I don't hate DJ Sona but it's so mainstream to the point where it's gotten kind of ugly.

Daedric Etwahl2 votes

Yeah, like if you go look up a fan creation or art of Sona, it's almost guaranteed to be regular (no surprises there), Arcade, or DJ.

Like, I see people make stickers, little figures, etc of several characters. They'll have regular Ahri, regular Jinx, regular Annie and... Arcade Sona. As someone who thinks the skin is just pretty good at best, it gets kinda annoying.

You have to actually specifically search for the other skins if you want to see fan creations of them. Arcade and DJ crowd out the others so badly. Literally every time I see another Sona player if they're using a skin, it's either DJ or Arcade.

I'll admit DJ is a high quality skin, but it's not the same Sona I fell in love with.

Fairyfleur3 votes

One of my biggest gripes with DJ is that it doesn't have any voice lines where she actually speaks. She doesn't have a personality and is just treated like a sex object.

Daedric Etwahl3 votes

Now that you mention it that's another reason I don't like DJ. The.music is nice but I want to hear my favorite gal's voice (it certainly helps that I really, really love how much Sona talks.to the player directly since her VO hasnt been updated ("Adagio, Summoner!"))

Plus her body shape clashes with one of my headcanons of her anyway.

I have slightly similar reason to dislike Arcade too, since she.just seems weirdly sexualized to me with the not wearing a shirt aspect.

I'm curious about this. Did you expect her to have a smaller butt, or what?

Daedric Etwahl1 votes

Haha, nah, it's just a totally personal thing. I like to imagine her not quite as thin under her dress, and DJ and Arcade show that she obviously is thin.

It's a silly thing, but hey, it's not the only silly headcanon I have for Sona.

Darkeus2 votes

Yeah Arcade is one of my least favorite Skins.

Most of this. I was thinking about a kit update where she could buff differently according to how many times she inputs a skill. I'm gonna work on it probably. She is an okay enchanter (power up allies next auto, shield/heal - even if mediocre, movespeed), she has the tools to enchant and debuff but later on it feels better to Q Empowered auto most of the times.

Sona's skill kit is kind of old comparing to others. Her skill kit is op in late game but I somehow feel way too classic. All her skills are non-skillshot (except R). People often complain about her Q being op with her passive.

Maybe rework on how the way she heals/damage/boost movespeed in more interactive ways. I have no idea or opinion about how her skill should be reworked. But I honestly hope they actually rework her skills.

She doesnt do enough damage to be a harrasser, and not enough healing to be an enchanter. As someone with mastery 7 on Sona, I was very disappointed when she got nerfed despite the nerf to Ardent Censer, which she needs to have healing on par with actual enchanters like Soraka (who is also going to build it, lets be honest), and AP Nami

I feel that reverting some of her nerfs and then SUSTANTIALLY nerfing both her autoattack and ability proc range would balance her to levels never before seen for sona. She has been a balancing nightmare since she was released and it's because of her epic combinations:

1.) Sona has a HUGE poking range (its bigger than every ADC's basic range) and oddly like most ranged champions, Riot doesn't seem to know or want to balance them around this despite it being the biggest advantage in the game.

2.) She's the most mobile true support in the game. Just under range, mobility is the second most powerful element in the game. This is what she uses to (counter) engage, ensure the ability save herself/teammates, secure kills, and pull off risky plays. This part of her is pretty balanced in my opinion.

3.) Heals and Shields. This is something Riot has done a good job with, they've balanced this part of her pretty well

Sona's MAX range, to do only 40 ignorable damage is 700 units, but alas... If there are minions nearby, Sona only prioritizes champions while they are within 600 units of her, to do 40 measly points of damage. Sona's optimal poke range is 550 units to utilize her full kit; this is the average range for ADCs.

2.) She's the most mobile true support in the game. Just under range, mobility is the second most powerful element in the game. This is what she uses to (counter) engage, ensure the ability save herself/teammates, secure kills, and pull off risky plays. This part of her is pretty balanced in my opinion.

Sona has 1 singular MS spell, which does nothing other than give MS. Meanwhile, Nami gives an equal amount of MS to ALL OF HER SPELLS and is DOUBLE when she ults. Bard can portal through any fucking wall. Thresh grants reverse mobility to his teammates, he can literally pull them from off screen. Leona can dash forward. Braum can jump to an ally. Karma just straight-up has a stronger MS ability. Lulu's MS buff literally makes anyone uncatchable. Sona has the worst mobility of any "mobile" support.

3.) Heals and Shields. This is something Riot has done a good job with, they've balanced this part of her pretty well

Sona is literally the WORST heal/shielder in the entire game. She can't control who she heals. The shield is melee-range and has a duration of 1.5 seconds. Not to mention the combined value of both of these, is still lower than literally every other heal or shield in the support class.

The Yetii Rider1 votes

Leave Sona alone. She needs to be easy to play so noobs have someone to support with. Taric, Janna and Soraka have all been made more complex. Sona is the last easy champion in support.

maybe an ability that amplifies damage for her teammates? or an ability that can increase attack speed? (I know her e does that for the first attack but this would be more consistent) Her abilities would make their damage her damage. Since supports are supposed to not really get kills this would also prevent her from taking kills (because its very easy to kill steal with her) while making her a pure support. Honestly I am not positive that this would work but its just an idea. I mean I am all for supports having an attack but I perfer pure supports but thats just me

Miku Hime sama2 votes

Her Q already does this. Always has done this. You're just blatantly demanding they remove the active and leave it as half of a spell. Not to mention, the majority of the support class all have 2 or 3 damage spells, Sona is a rare support with only 1 damage spell. She's also the only support with a damage spell that doesn't have utility tied onto it somewhere.

or an ability that can increase attack speed? (I know her e does that for the first attack but this would be more consistent)

Sona's E grants movement speed, NOT attack speed.

http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Sona/Abilities

Since supports are supposed to not really get kills this would also prevent her from taking kills (because its very easy to kill steal with her) while making her a pure support.

This is a misconception that has been carried over from season 3. Back then, Sona had nearly thrice the damage output she's got right now. As the game currently is, it's more difficult to ks, let alone solo-kill anybody as Sona than 99% of the rest of the support class. This only occurs if they're INTENTIONALLY ksing, with their 1st-item Sheen, saving their full combo to ks, because they think stealing that income will somehow make them a relevant character.

Honestly I am not positive that this would work but its just an idea. I mean I am all for supports having an attack but I perfer pure supports but thats just me

It won't work and it would create the only character in League without a source of damage. You will be hard-pressed to find games that actually do this: Mercy has a pistol, every "support" in DotA has a 1-shot combo, even white mages have attack spells.
