This preseason patch has proven how grossly incompetent the current riot balance team is

#1. Runes

Shards The replacement of the somewhat limiting path bonuses for the current shard system initially appeared to be a godsend for the game, but they are not. the CDR and health shards are noob traps, being completely useless for the majority of the game. The adaptive force and attack speed choices provide double the gold value in stats than the defensive ones do. This is one of the major themes that this patch contains, defense and supportive choices are nerfed while damaging ones are buffed.

Celerity Celerity has become another noob trap. It's old form provided a nice MS buff and a nice damage buff. Now it provides a garbage bonus MS buff which, even on it's best users like Hecarim Zilean Udyr provide an incredibly measly amount of movement speed. Although the removal of more free damage stats from the game was nice, the rune was reduced to a shell of it's former self and is now garbage on even it's best users.

Dark Harvest What is there for me to say? It's now a rune that provides absurd amounts of damage for getting an enemy low health. It is completely busted and dominating the game. It is not unlikely to see 4 or more people taking this rune in game.

Shield Bash An extremely niche rune that only works on a select few champions and provides a garbage amount of resistances in favor of more damage.

Bone Plating It has been moved the second row in the defensive tree because riot does not like people taking 3 defensive runes.

Chrysalis The rune that allowed squishier champions such as enchanters to survive laning phase has been completely removed from the game, getting replaced by the niche, damage focused rune that Shield Bash is. Yet another example of riot prioritizing damage over defensive stats.

Overgrowth Changed so that it is better for non tanks, worse for actual tanks. I do not understand the idea behind this change. Is the resolve tree not for champions who are tanks?

Kleptomancy Worse on everyone except those who could already abuse it.

#2. Turret changes The new playing makes turrets last longer, but it also gives the winning lane a major injection of gold. In the past a winning lane would be ahead because of CS advantage and a possible kill advantage. This was usually enough to let them snowball out the game, but riot decided it wasn't enough. Now a winning player has an extra almost 1k gold to smack other players around with. If you have the misfortune of having a poor top laner facing a good one, you will now have to deal with a ridiculously fed champion steamrolling through the rest of the game.

The addition of plating on the outer turrets, for some unknown reason, made riot think it was perfectly fine to remove all other resistances from those turrets. After 14 minutes in the game pass, the outer turrets are literally wet tissue paper. They have no resistances whatsoever.

The increase in damage that turrets do is one of the few things riot did right in this entire patch. It now makes tower dives far, far riskier, which I greatly appreciate.

#3. Minion changes Minions now get to lane far faster than before and push harder than before. This speeds up games and closes up any breathing room you would get for killing a wave. Most minions, aside from the super minions, were buffed in this patch, causing turrets to be easier to take than ever before.

#4. Champion changes. Ezreal For some reason, riot buffed both regular ezreal and AP ezreal at the same time, despite regular ezreal not requiring any buffs. He was already an extremely dominant bot laner. The base damage on his W was increased as well as the AP scaling. His ultimate was buffed in fights against champions and against larger minion waves, thoguh it was nerfed against smaller ones.

Taliyah Her signature ability, her waveclear, was completely gutted.

The changes that are even more indicative of riot's incompetence are the ones that are not listed. Akali, Irelia, Graves, and more are all still extremely dominating picks that have not been touched.

Plus, mordekaiser still hasn't gotten any bug fixes, but who's surprised?

#5. Changes to warding I understand that the idea behind the changes to warding are to increase the risk taking people do in high elo and especially in worlds, but these changes have been made without thinking about the average player. Forcing ward scaling to be on the average level of the game holds back players who are able to press advantages. The duration of wards has been gutted. For some ungodly reason, you can now only carry two control wards at a time. One person can barely provide any ward coverage anymore with all of the different sources of ward clearing, whether it be Duskblade or trinkets.

In summary, riot doesn't know what they're doing anymore. They refuse to address the communities issues with mobility creep, damage creep, and shorter, less satisfying games, instead pushing forward with their removal of defensive sources, disgusting buffs to damaging runes, and constantly nerfing turrets while claiming that they're buffing them.

The balance team needs to change.

EDIT: loads of downvotes, but no one refuting what I'm saying? If you're going to downvote me, explain your reasoning. And no, saying "BUT THE GAME IS GOOD NOW LOL" is not reasoning.

EDIT2: Old Runes

In season 7 and season 6 we had access to both the masteries (which were very similar to the runes we have now) and access to the old runepages. These old rune pages could be set up to specialize into certain stats, such as armor. A classic counter to champions like Pantheon would be to run a 27 armor runepage (I had one of these, affectionately named "pantheon suck my ..."). 27 armor at level 1. The measly 10 armor you can now get from the shards is POCKET CHANGE compared to what you could get.

This balance team has everything upside fucking down.

I find the current patch has improved my games through turret durability and damage my own durability through rune shards.

New comeback mechanics keep my games close too .

Marshbouy16 votes

I am having the completely opposite experience. Games are only getting stompier and stompier and they're 0 fun to be in.

the new rune shards give more stats if you choose to go offensive instead of defensive. I don't see how that is hard to not understand. Riot does not want to give the community what the community wants and is just trying to placate people with garbage "defensive stats."

Literally the CDR shard, and the resistance shards are borderline OP, having a 10 point armor advantage at level one? That's a huge deal, the CDR shards are saving you from buying that last CDR item, and again making burst supports/mages have an early advantage. As mordekaiser I take both of the resistance shards and it makes all the difference; before I would get bursted like a good damn balloon whenever the ADC focuses me for .2 seconds, now I can survive long enough to get to them and C R A C K S K U L L! Honestly the damage shards are nothing compared to resistance shards.

Marshbouy8 votes

you're overblowing how powerful the resistance shards are.

the 10 armor you get, if you have 500 HP, gives you 50 more effective HP against attack damage. that's almost nothing, especially when they get another 12 AD to shred your health bar with.

TecmagDiams3 votes

Though I don't have the time, nor care, to make a full post (and can tell it won't change your mind) I'm just gonna toss out that 50 effective health against 12 AD is 4 attacks worth, before taking into account regen/healing.

Defence also has effective bonus healing applied to it.

You also make the assumption that what you want in League is what the community wants, completely ignoring the fact these changes you don't like might be what other people do.

Marshbouy5 votes

That's because the resistance granted by armor takes into account the health of the champion its on. It's hard to compare these in a pure vacuum without breaking it down further into raw gold value.

AD can be applied and reapplied much faster than HP can, because riot continually nerfs regen in lane (which I don't disagree with, I'm just stating a fact). When you count the AD scaling of abilities, it is clear that the Adaptive Force runes are still objectively better.

Unranked in season 8 and silver in 7 and bronze in 6? Your point friend? Just because my mechanical skill is currently at silver level does not mean my game knowledge is just as bad. Anyone can look up stats, but it takes a special breed to insult someone for being at the same level as you.

See, this right here is an example of rank shaming and an ad hominem. Why address his actual point when you can just see his stats and dismiss him with a condescending remark. Why don’t you try again and address arguments instead of the people making them.

I feel riot has given us exactly what we need.

I feel more durable in games and the turrets are far more difficult to take down early game.

If I am behind I have an opportunity to come back and other lanes not doing well does not mean my lane is over.

Marshbouy12 votes

I want turrets to be durable without giving the person attacking them absurd amounts of gold.

I want all of the turrets to be more durable for the whole length of the game, not just the first 14 min.

I want damage to be lowered.

I want defensive options for the runepages to be on par with offensive options.

I want dominating champions to be nerfed.

I want vision to be buffed and stop being nerfed.

etc. etc.

I've already explained in this post why riot is not moving in the right direction.

Every single preseason everyone sticks their head in the sand and says "iT'lL bE FiXeD, ItS JuST prESeASon" and every year riot fails to fix the problems within a reasonable time frame. How hard is it to lower the damage on Irelia's Q? How hard is it to give Graves a handful of base damage nerfs?

How hard is it to lower the damage of the different runes and give back more defensive based ones? How hard is it?

Defensive stats have greatly improved lane phase I am not as vulnerable to all ins . As well lane bullies are not as oppressive.

Tower damage buffs have made tower dives far more riskier.

Tougher towers mean one losing lane does not decide the lane since they don't fall as fast.

Teams that are behind have for more comeback potential with the new bounty system and the rework to minions and Baron changes.

Wards based on average level means team behind isn't forced out of vision game.

Resolve tree has been buffed on multiple fronts.

no they have not. It is still a step down from what we had before runes reforged. Before, more champions would take 9 armor and roughly the same amount of MR along with AP/AD/AS or whatever else they wanted. A whole 10 armor is nothing compared to what we had and it is still considerably less stats compared to what the adaptive force runes offer.

Tower damage buffs have made tower dives far more riskier.

this is one of the few things I like about this patch, I'll give you that.

Tougher towers mean one losing lane does not decide the lane since they don't fall as fast.

I don't know what this means, but I think you're trying to say that one death doesn't result in a tower falling. You're right, it only results in a champion getting ~300 more gold and being able to press the advantage even harder. Eventually when the plates fall, that champion is going to steamroll through the map with their gold advantage.

Teams that are behind have for more comeback potential with the new bounty system and the rework to minions and Baron changes.

The new bounty system has barely changed anything. The rework to minions has only worsened the snowball because they now push harder and faster than they previously did. The only good part of this change was that baron buff doesn't make minions literal tanks.

Wards based on average level means team behind isn't forced out of vision game.

At the cost of gutting wards across the board on all other fronts and holding people back who are ahead. this is one change that helps only in certain scenarios in a sea of changes that are gutting vision.

Resolve tree has been buffed on multiple fronts.

it's been buffed for damage users, not people who actually want to build defensively. The first row contains Demolish (damage), font of life, and Shield bash (mainly damage). Shield bash is niche and font of life is trash, so unless you can abuse shield bash you are forced into taking demolish.

The second row contains all of the good, defensive runes in the resolve tree. this isn't how it used to be, but riot wanted to change it because GOD FORBID people took THREE defensive runes.

Overgrowth got nerfed for tanks and buffed for squishies.

The only way that you can look at the resolve tree changes and come away with the idea that it got buffed is if you're someone who plays champions that take resolve secondary to offset squishiness. otherwise it was ruined for people who actually want to play tanks.

You're gonna have to try a lot harder than that to defend these godawful changes.

It's literally not ruining the game though dude .

At the moment you can play an early game champion a mid game champion or a late game champion and you have a good chance of winning with every one of those. We will all play late game scaling champs.

You want towers to he buffed you want damage to be gutted

Ok

All this will do is bring back 40 minute games were the game is all about protecting the adc and early game champions no longer matter because you cannot close games with them.

The balance changes have all been done with this in mind.

you're acting like that's a bad thing. This game was founded on and got popular off of long, drawn out games. Early game champions like Pantheon still managed to function when games averaged 30+ min. I'd rather have high quality, longer games than the one sided stomp fests that we have now.

They aren't going to change this stuff. At least not in a way that will make you and me happy. They said that they were making these changes in order to move the game along.

Neither you, nor I, nor any large section of the playerbase that I am aware of, was previously dissatisfied with gamelength (at the end of Season 7, when the game seemed to be relatively balanced). But Riot finds 40m matches intolerable. ideally, all matches should be exactly 20m - however then many matches would end before 20m, so they are aiming for 25m. It feels heavy-handed, and it probably has more to do with keeping people watching pro play than the experience of the players themselves.

The imbalance team isn't really incompetent, at least not in this case. They were given the task of accomplishing a certain goal, and they are effecting it. It's just a bad decision. It's not an area that most of us wanted attention and resources paid.

Don't forget with masteries renamed runes reforged, champions got base stat boosts and base damage boosts on their spells. Then got access to additional starting AD/AP from runes. The addition of armor and MR runes back is a pittance compared to the 20 adaptive force offensive classes get.

Compare Riven 9 AD reds, 9 armor yellows, 3 AD quints = 15 AD 9 Armor And a tank Poppy 9 AD reds, 9 armor yellows, 3 armor quints = 9 AD and 21.8 Armor

To these same champions even with the new stat shards

Riven 8 base AD increase, 9 base AR increase, two ad shards, one AR shard = 20 AD, 14 AR Poppy 8 Base AD increase, 9 base AR increase, two ar shard, one ad shard = 14 AD and 19 AR

Fighters are slightly tankier, while tanks themselves are squishier, and damage stats are up across the board.

This is to say nothing of the removal of masteries like Siegemaster, Legendary Guardian, Veteran's Scars, Fearless, Unyielding (+1.5 AR from the start with runes and other masteries), and Tough Skin, which offered upwards of 38 extra armor against burst and poke damage.

Compare those to the only masteries to grant offensive stats: Fury grants 4% AS and Fervor of Battle grants a slow build up of AD for extended trades or duels, up to +8 AD max to start off.

I really do not get how Riot does not see they could slow down the decline of their game massively by just reverting the rune system and champion base stats. It seems like the Chinese internet café scene is too important, so they force twenty minute oneshot fiestas down our throat.

You say that the resistance does nothing, but tell that to my recent games where I stop early with mordekaiser. I'm consistently winning the early game and am dying far less, I only care about early game with the shards, because yes 10 more armor isn't a lot in the long run, but having my base stat be 10 points higher makes a HUGE difference. If you don't agree with me, then that's ok, you're entitled to your opinion. But I love the new runes, and I wouldn't have it any other way (this is coming from a tank main, the one who you say is being negatively affected)

It's actually really good, yes of you're ahead in farm or kills, dying is going to SUCK! But it's better than you dying, and it having no effect on the game at all. 420BongL0rd691 votes

Yeah I disagree 100%. It has been two months now and I can safely say the new bounty system and turret system really only works in high Elo and Competitive. I am silver but in normal I end up playing with a lot of gold and plat players, and really all these systems did was turn the game into a game of Tennis. And I know I said that before but that really is what is now. You can't farm to get back into game anymore because when you get behind the only option is to farm because killing champions becomes a feat that can only be accomplished by enemy incompetence or finding someone that is behind like you. So when you do farm all that ends up happening is you snowball the people that come to stop you from getting in the game anymore. Eventually it gets to the point where 4 people need to farm if you are drastically behind yet there isn't enough gold on the map. The enemy team will inevitably start counter jungling you to push you even further behind. And if that doesn't happen all you do is , you guessed it, add to that bounty that they will collect to snowball even faster. The turret system only rewards lane bullies seeing as that to get to the tower you need to push the wave and the person out of lane. And when behind the "Resistances" the turret gets after a plate breaks drops the damage by a little. But most can negate this by getting enough pen. (Which is now everywhere for ad and AP alike through oblivion orb sorc boots for ap and lethality for ad. ON top of all this it give 160 gold per plate for a single person. That means after 5 plates its 800 gold plus first brick if you got snowballed hard enough. All these systems did was punish people who were trying to get better at the game. You can't make posts about how you feel like losing is 2 times worse than winning feels good then basically make winning feel better and losing feel even worse.

lolipopevelynn2 votes

Is op trying to say that 10 adaptive force is double effective than 5 armor or 6 mr? Do u want 10 armor or 11 mr in one shard instead? Doesnt work that way bud. I suggest getting both the resist shards, they are too good.

The hp shard are beyond worthless tho.

I want at least 7 armor per shard and 8 for MR. I want to be able to take 3 defensive shards.

The old rune system could give you 27 armor at LEVEL 1. The current system is pocket change compared to what we once had.
