What if Zhonya's was changed to work more like a spellshield

Take Nocturne's W or Sivir's E into consideration. Now instead of one ability (and the buff you recieve for blocking something) you go into a Zhonya's state for that active time. Basically we could make the time shorter so some champions Kennen Fiddlesticks Heimerdinger can't just pop ult or something and just because invulnerable for 2.5 seconds (a pretty absurd time if you consider how much damage Fiddle or Kennen can do with their ults if you can't get out quick. So if the enemy support also stuns you (or Fiddle fears before item 3157 or Kennen passive stuns) you aren't just boned without being able to kill the damage source. What it instead the item gave like a .5 second stasis (buff the stats if people bitch, but I honestly feel like Zhonya's is op as hell in some cases). A short stasis would still be able to block kill damage Karthus or Zed ult, but it can't be used as a "here take all this free damage while I'm invincible."

The reason I feel it would still work is because if you think about, 2.5 seconds is a LONG time in a real-time game. Anyone who played Halo: Reach could agree that armor lock was completely overpowered. Your teammate strolls along while you're invulnerable and the enemy is just screwed since they just fought you. 2.5 seconds can allow so much for some champions. If Morgana has her ult on you for a second before she uses item 3157 there's still a good chance she'll stun you. However if you can focus her down to kill her you eliminate the threat, even if Zhonya's is nerfed to a shorter time (.5 sec for example) she can still use that to escape a good amount of damage (enough to survive) to get her ultimate finished.

Think of all the times you've not been able to kill someone or have died because they just go invulnerable for 2.5 seconds and their team comes in or they get a cooldown. And this nerf still would give the item its niche of "let me dodge that nuke real quick." It would still be able to avoid Zed's ultimate pop (unless he kills you without the pop, then I don't think Zhonya's would've save you). And it also eliminates the abilities for glass cannons to rush into a 1v5 do damage and then sit for a couple seconds while their team comes in behind them.

The fact that pressing the button makes you stuck there contemplating your fate for the next 2.5 sec is what makes it balanced. You can't move, you can't attack, can't help you team. If they lose the teamfight during those 2.5 seconds, you're dead.

If it lasted 1 sec, you could dodge a wombo combo and just walk away.

a pretty absurd time if you consider how much damage Fiddle or Kennen can do with their ults if you can't get out quick.

The strategy of the AoE ultimates on Kennen and Fiddlesticks means there optimally play-style is throwing their squishy selves into the middle of 5 enemy champions, which is such a questionable strategy at face value it generally needs something as powerful as Zhonya's to really work out.

Compare that to Lux and Ziggs that need 0 defensive items to AoE the same number of people in an instant.

Fidd and Kennen aren't OP with Zhonya's so much as they're playable because of Zhonya's.

The reason I feel it would still work is because if you think about, 2.5 seconds is a LONG time in a real-time game.

That actually works against Zhonya's more than it works for it. Stasis's defensive boons are very nice, but it also immobilizes, silences, and disables your hero at the same time. It's not just invulnerability, it also comes with a considerable downside.

The defensive bonus usually relies on your opponents casting things while you take no damage, which is only really happens within ~1 second of activating stasis. Especially vs. point-click, and such skills can't even be cast against a target in stasis.

The mobility disadvantage gets substantially worse the longer stasis lasts though. 2.5 seconds when your team is retreating is bad. 10 seconds when your team is retreating means you're 100% dead.

However if you can focus her down to kill her you eliminate the threat, even if Zhonya's is nerfed to a shorter time (.5 sec for example) she can still use that to escape a good amount of damage (enough to survive) to get her ultimate finished.

Being able to walk-out of the periodic ult damage is a pretty significant countermeasure to such champions. There are plenty of champions with point-click or instant damage you just can't evade by listing lazily to the left.

And again, reducing Zhonya's active to something between 1~2.4 seconds would be a buff in more cases than not.
