Shen Rework

If they rework Shen, I feel as though there are 4 themes that must be in Shen's kit:

The Ki-strike, his whole kit synergizes around it... The dash-taunt, this in addition to.. His ultimate are iconic to Shen. Also, the Q that restores his health.

His kit is also weird in that he should be built tanky AP, similar to a bruiser, due to all of his AP ratios and whatnot, but all people do nowadays is go full tank. You benefit much more from that and there should be more of an incentive to build AP while also maintaining his tankiness. Similar to Singed.

How I would fix his kit?

His current kit:

Ki Strike STATIC COOLDOWN: 9 Ki Strike Shen's next basic attack deals bonus magic damage equal to「 4 + (4 × Shen's level) 」(+ 10% of bonus health) and restores 10 / 20 / 30 Energy. Every basic attack reduces the cooldown by 1 second, up to 2 seconds while Feint.png Feint holds.

Vorpal Blade RANGE: 475 COST: 60 ENERGY COOLDOWN: 6 / 5.5 / 5 / 4.5 / 4 Vorpal Blade ACTIVE: Shen throws a blade at the target enemy, dealing magic damage and marking them for 5 seconds. Shen and allied champions that damage a marked enemy will heal over 3 seconds, with the duration refreshing upon subsequent damage. MAGIC DAMAGE: 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+ 60% AP) HEAL: 6 / 10 / 14 / 18 / 22 (+ 1.5% Shen's maximum health) If Vorpal Blade kills the target, Shen heals for 33% of the normal amount instantly. INSTANT HEAL: 2 / 3 / 5 / 6 / 7 (+ 0.5% Shen's maximum health)

Feint COST: 50 ENERGY COOLDOWN: 9 / 8 / 7 / 6 / 5 Feint ACTIVE: Shen gains a shield that lasts up to 3 seconds. While it persists, his basic attacks reduce the cooldown of Ki Strike.png Ki Strike by an additional 1 second (2 seconds total). SHIELD: 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+ 60% AP)

Shadow Dash RANGE: 600 COST: 100 ENERGY COOLDOWN: 16 / 14 / 12 / 10 / 8 Shadow Dash ACTIVE: Shen dashes in the target direction, dealing magic damage to enemy champions he hits, Taunt icon taunting them for 1.5 seconds and restoring 40 energy per target. Taunted opponents deal half damage to Shen. MAGIC DAMAGE: 50 / 85 / 120 / 155 / 190 (+ 50% AP)

[show] Ability Details

Stand United RANGE: Global COOLDOWN: 180 / 160 / 120 Stand United ACTIVE: Shen channels for 3 seconds, granting the target allied champion a shield that lasts up to 5 seconds. If the channel completes successfully, Shen teleports to his target, placing himself between them and the nearest visible enemy champion. SHIELD: 250 / 550 / 850 (+ 135% AP)

Changes and why: The way he is currently built, when he is in a teamfight he feels a bit lackluster. He is very damn hard to kill, but what do you do inbetween taunts? Other tanky champions have % based damage so don't need to invest much in offensive stats to provide some sort of health to fights (Dr.Mundo's Cleaver, Sion's shield, etc...), multiple CC abilities (Nautilus, Leona, Alistar, Udyr's bear stance, etc..), or a major damage reduction abilty (Alistar's ult, Sion's shield which scales of max health, Nautilus's shield which scales off max health, Leona's defense buff, Udyr's shield, etc..). Shen is the exception. His shield is shit, a total afterthought. No % based damage. No CC aside from his taunt. As stated, his damage reduction is near non-existant. Lets compare him to another taunter, Rammus. His Q gives him high mobility and gives him a knockback, his curl gives him a huge defensive buff, and his taunt also reduces their armor in addition to taunting them. He also has a massive amount of synergy within his kit. Roll into a fight, Defensive ball curl, taunt, repeat.

This is how you fix Shen.

  1. Basic attacks no longer reduce the cooldown of his Ki-Strike and no longer restore his energy. I gave the energy portion of his passive to his W, and the CDR to his Ki-strike. I always thought it was weird for him to have a passive that scaled with attack speed. Instead, every 9 seconds his next attack with stun the next target he hits. He can trade like this: When his stun is up, he pops his W, AA, uses his Q, AA until stun fades/they start running, E to effectively stun them again, etc... This will make him an effective peeler in addition to synergizing well with his kit.

  2. Make his Q's damage work like an execute. In addition to scaling with AP, it should do additional damage that scales with the enemy's missing health.

Make the heal on his Q scale based on damage dealt instead of his max health. Hitting a minion or monster with his Q will reduce the CD of his Ki Strike by 1 second, hitting a champion will reduce it by 2 seconds. Landing a kill with this ability doubles the bonuses. Half the amount of the heal is applied to the nearest allied champion.

  1. Make his W scale with his max health instead of AP. Also, instead of reducing the CD of his Ki Strike, make it to where he gains 2 / 4 / 6 / 8 / 10 energy per strike while his shield is up. His shield is currently lack luster due to the fact is scales with AP and most Shen's don't build much AP at all. It reduces this CD of his Ki Strike, which gives him energy when it lands. Give it to his W instead, This would also allow "Counter-play" -- "Oh shit, Shen popped his W. Better break his shield so he doesn't regen energy so quickly"

  2. His shadow dash wouldn't need anything major.

  3. Stand United doesn't need anything either. Perhaps lower the AP Scaling a bit and make it scale a bit off of Max-Health.

Stun inside a passive is too strong in certain situations (especially on a duelist), the only case it somehow worked is Braum, but he is not a duel centric and there is no guarantee on when the sun will successfully trigger since it needs proc'ing. Unlike this Shen passive change you suggested which will make his lane scene an absolute disaster since there is no way for enemies to escape a gank against him without burning summoners.

I have not much disagreements with the rest of the proposal. The only things I have problems with are

  1. the numbers, the energy return on W is probably too extreme in high levels. and
  2. I am really not comfortable with Shen scaling off offensive stats such as "%damage dealt" since he was made from head to toe as a duelist that focuses on team support and sustain, but not damage. However maybe it can still work out I am not sure.

The passive in particular needs some work but other than that, solid proposal nevertheless imo.

I was considering a silence as well instead of a stun, issue is aside from his taunt he lacks hard CC and him having a stun on a 9 second CD that he has to be in melee range to use wouldn't be too crazy aside from him ganking from the jungle. The thing is about Shen jungle though is he is one of the slowest junglers around, I feel like if he doesn't land a few successful ganks early he will struggle being able to take damage and hurt later on.

  1. Reason why I said 10 energy a strike at max rank was because the shield lasts 3 seconds and I took the energy away from his Ki Strike, which gave 30 energy each time it landed. If anything I was worried it was too low because you'd need to attack non-stop with 1.5 attack speed without his shield being broken to match his previous production. Maybe it can be that his Q marks targets and hitting a marked target gives you 10/15/20/25/30 energy returned?

  2. Shen doesn't buy any lifesteal items, and even if he did he wouldn't be able to make much use of them. He also doesn't benefit much from spell vamp. This is why I wanted him to be able to "life steal" more and more by building AP. A Shen that built more AP would make for a bursty bruiser with high sustain (similar to tank warwick), and a Shen that built more defensive than AP would have a bigger shield from his W. AP Shen would heal back damage dealt to him, Tank Shen would prevent it from happening in the first place.

TBH, I would like to see a Shen where he deals primarily in terms of his max health, rather than AP. I think they should either remove or drastically decrease the amount of AP scaling he has with his abilities (because even if you do build him with AP, he is very underwhelming) in favor of his max health, with the exception being his Shadow Dash.

I like how he is one of the only tanks that scales really well with building AS, however. Maybe stat changes should encourage players to build one or two AS items (e.g. BotrK, Wit's End) and then go full tank. Similar to a Renekton except with AS rather than AD.

That'd be cool too. In order for that to work, this is what I would do.

  1. Keep all of his abilities the same with the exception of making his W scale off of Max Health instead of AP and for Shen to get bonus attack speed while his W is up... similar to Skarner. He'd also receive a passive attack speed increase. (I'd make it similar to Nocturne's, 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40% passive attack speed and double that bonus while shield is up)

  2. Change the Q to dealing damage scaling off of enemies missing health and marks the target, and to change the heal mechanic to "gain X amount of health on hit on marked target" or "recovers x% of his max health on hit on marked target" Those 2 abilities in addition to his passive would make him synergize well with attack speed and max health.

I like his Q is where it's at. I feel like the "scaling off missing health" thing might be a tad bit overpowered... Keep in mind that one picks Shen primarily for his global presence and utility. Giving his Q such a huge buff would immediately put him above all the other tanks in the game in lane on TOP of giving him the global presence. I really think the only thing that needs a buff is his W.

I personally always felt sorry for the way riot created shen. He is pretty much just a wall built of full armor, mr, and health. After his taunt in team fights he is useless. He deals no damage no more cc, maybe his ult to shield a ally if he didnt use it yet. The reason as everyone would know is becuz he does not stack with anything but ap. If you tried a ap shen u would know how shitty it is too, super squishy when no shield average damage and a taunt no likely to be used again. The whole point of shen is a tank at top lane who split pushes and ults into team fights. There are countless top lane champions who are as tanky and yet deal insane damage and have much more cc thatn shen. For example, Renekton, tanky ad bruiser has a stun has a ult that makes him a wall and also deals damage, and he has a q which heals and deals aoe damage. His e which allows him to slice into the enemy lines and maybe stun a mage or adc. Renekton does not use energy or mana. Another dude would be nasus. All he needs is to build tank and his q does damage itself and his e is a pretty sick aoe ap damage tool. His ult which makes him unkillable. There is Mundo, Sion, Gnar, Darius, Chogath, Garen, Hecarim, Jarvan, Jax, Singed, Volibear, Wukong,Trundle, and Aatrox who all heal damage and are super tanky. I don't ask or anything really but just let shen do some damage with his q and e scaling with ad which a tak shen would not build so much of and pls just one more cc to his kit just like he stun on his passive. Because his q scaling with max health would be too op.

If Riot Games does a Shen re-work I will start buying league cards again but the re-work cant suck. its OK Shen don't item 3073 A complete re-work like what they did to Sion because Shen doesn't have skill plus his energy runs out with just 1 Q,W, and E
