Unpopular vs Underpowered Champions

TL;DR : The point of this is to say please don't rework our favorite champions unless it is absolutely necessary. Not every champion has to be popular, and being unpopular doesn't equal weakness. FE: Yorick is one of the less-visually appealing champions in the game and might be a bit more popular if Riot had actually released a skin for him since 2011.

Unpopular Champions:

Champions that don't need buffs, they are just simply unpopular for whatever reason (the meta, their appearance, their learning curve, etc...)

This includes champions such as: Anivia, Mordekaiser, Trundle, etc...

These champions do not to be changed/reworked. They need VUs (Look at Mord's pizza feet, and Trundle is an ugly troll. I guarantee if Mordekaiser had Trundle's kit, Mordekaiser would be very popular because Trundle actually has a badass kit and Mordekaiser looks like a badass) or a change in meta in order to become popular. In fact, I am surprised these 3 champions are unpopular in the current meta. Mordekaiser needs a team with CC in order to succeed, and his ult is a tank killer (especially if mixed with Liandrys and Rylais, althought I do not personally build him that way) Trundle is a tank killer. Anivia synergizes extremely well with Liandry's, a tank killing item. I would not be surprised of these 3 gained a lot of popularity this season.

PS: Why do people complain about Mordekaiser not having CC? Master Yi doesn't. Mordekaiser has the ability to turn a fight into a 4v6, nobody else does. Mordekaiser is similar to Nasus, only Nasus farms stacks while Mordekaiser farms mass amounts of CS to finally wind up near indestructible and massively damaging at full build. The man in metal has a very scary late game I'd put it 2nd to only the best of hyper-carries

Udyr

A true raid boss and one of the stronger junglers especially with cinderhulk, but his regular model just looks so god damn horrible. It's so bad that I am more likely to see a Spirit Guard Udyr over a classic skin udyr in the games where he is played. Once you have seen SGU, you really can't play classic skin for many more games before you decide that his regular model is just horrible.

Migrañaboy2 votes

Udyr rework turned out to be so good to be exploited as ultimate skin, ;^).

It was odd that Riot stated that his base model was good and only needed a TU. All of my Keks.

I had the same reasoning with Kayle, i saw her Aether and bought it because i didnt wanna see her ugly model when i could have something so much better. Not to mention her E auto attacks look horrible.

The moment i get Aether wing in a random box is the moment I start playing Kayle again. Her model is just so outdated and Aether Wing blows it out of the water.

Unpopular (less than 3% pick rate) but not needing a rework: Singed Karthus Anivia Trundle Zyra Skarner Kayle Kassadin Quinn Syndra Zac Karma Velkoz

Unpopular and needing minor kit tweaks: Galio Elise Aatrox Nocturne Veigar Mordekaiser Gangplank

Unpopular and needing a rework (doesn't mean I don't like them, some just need to be changed for the sake of the game, like Poppy): Zilean Yorick Poppy Urgot Taric Evelynn Olaf

A lot of these champs aren't underpowered at all, but the ones that need reworks need them for completely different reasons than their current viability

LifeCyclesTWA1 votes

I hope they don't touch my Morde :( lol. Same with Nocturne, he has some clutch things built into his kit. I once saw a Nocturne grab Banshee's Veil, and he was so perfect at timing his spell shield he'd be able to block 2 spells with that combo. If a spell is cast at you and you activate your W while your Banshee's is still up it takes both your Banshee's and your W, so that was amazing to see him block off 2 spells back to back. Nocturne is also great before teamfights at removing all the Banshee's Veils from the enemy team. Right before a teamfight just pop your ult and laugh as the whole enemy team loses their BV lol. The ability to completely bypass enemy wards when he ganks is awesome as well, and how its near impossible to juke a Noc if he lands his trail on you. While he has sacrificed a bit in his kit to compensate for his strengths, I feel like he is in a good place. Especially with the new BC.

Aside from those 2, I agree with this list all the way

junglerboy161 votes

when I say minor kit tweaks, I mean stuff like the little MS boost and ally double cast they gave to Morde's W, not actually changing much about the skills. someone like GP could use a new E, but other than that, he's set. Elise mostly needs scalings adjusted to make her an actual assassin, not some weird off-tank AP assassin bruiser. Galio just needs to be more interesting (he's balanced, but super boring to play most of the time). Aatrox needs buffs and to be less ball-o-stats oriented. Veigar needs that reduced cast delay on W, Morde just needs his AP ratio's back and maybe some pizazz on his E, and Nocturne just needs better burst to actually be a real assassin again.

Drunken Mutt1 votes

I personally play full ad nocturne mid and I usually win. The cooldown on his ult is kinda stupid though, like really? 3 min?

SpongebobIsLife2 votes

id argue that kass needs some loving. The rest I agree with except I don't think olaf needs a rework.

junglerboy163 votes

Maybe number buffs, but Kass doesn't need any kit tweaks or a rework.

I put Olaf under the needs a rework section because right now he just doesn't do anything really unique and he could be so much more than he is (which is a pile of stats in a horned helmet).

Vistha Kai1 votes

I disagree. There are about 25 champions that go mid and have lower pick rate than Syndra.

Kayle is just... ult bot, nothing else. I'd say she actually needs some kind of help.

junglerboy161 votes

The list I just made includes every single champ with below 3% pick rate, with Olaf being the highest at 2.98%. Syndra has a very low pick rate right now.

Kyle may need number buffs, but her kit right now works. She is a utility carry with strong AP DPS, and does her job well.

I don't think yorick needs a rework I like his kit but unfortunately no one else does.

junglerboy161 votes

I love his kit actually,

—just not when I have to play against one. He has very little counterplay in lane and is really just kind of annoying to play against even if you do well against him.

Godaren1 votes

This is true he isn't very interactive. Pantheon top is the same just spam you down until you cannot lane anymore.

T RexHasTinyArms1 votes

Why do you think morde needs rework/tweaks? Was looking at buying him and just curious.

junglerboy162 votes

The last set of changes they gave him kind of neutered his full AP burst build while making him super reliant on getting a ghost. Those two things don't go well together, because it means he has a harder time getting his ghost (can't reliably kill people), but if he doesn't get it, he is even worse off than before (So much of his damage is now linked to the Ghost). Basically, they need to consolidate his identity. Is he a tanky AP melee who's identity is the unkillable, immovable champion? or is he a bursty AP mage who torments the souls of his victims and turns them against his allies? Right now, he is halfway between the two, which leaves him inadequate in either role. He doesn't offer anywhere near enough disruption to get away with building tanky, because he'll just be ignored for dealing low damage and having no CC. If he is an AP mage, then his ratios are absolutely pathetic, his burst is low, and he can't reliably kill a single target like his kit is supposed to.

Personally, I don't see why they are so hooked on the idea that a giant specter in a suit of armor can't be bursty, but should be a tank. Nothing in any of his lores say anything about being hard to kill, but they do mention him tearing the soul directly from his victim's bodies and enslaving them. Morde as a champion sacrifices all CC and nearly all mobility to have his soul rending burst, his high in combat durability, and his great team fighting via setting up 6v4s, but right now, Riot has left him at a crossroads with half of his design walking one way and half walking the other way instead of embracing his niche as the immovable late game burst specter of pain.

T RexHasTinyArms1 votes

I can definitely see that I suppose. I'm curious what you think of a pen build like rumble does. Rumble has always scaled better with pen than ap bc of low ratios and high base, perhaps morde could get away with the same? Also what do you think of making the change to his ult that it can't be qss or otherwise removed? Then they could make changes to numbers to make him sustained dps and make his ult more central but less bursty? Maybe make it so it doesn't give ghost if out side a certain range at death so it becomes high damage dot that can zone someone from fight so they don't risk ghost or used on a target your team locks down after initial burst.

Would that make him op?

junglerboy162 votes

Due to the buffs to his danger zone last summer, Rumble actually has very good AP ratios when managed properly, and most build something along the lines of item 3151 item 3116 item 3020 item 3135 item 3157 item 3001 and while that is a lot of magic pen, that is still 410 AP. Altogether Rumble has up to 420% AP worth of damage ratios in his kit with one spell rotation (not counting shield strength or his passive's on-hit). Morde on the other hand now has 346% AP in his full burst rotation (using a carry with 2500 HP to calculate the Ult's ratio), including sitting on his enemy with his W for 6 seconds and leaving his ult going the full duration. his base damages are also very low outside his ult DoT, giving him only 1910 base damage after waiting a whole 10 seconds for his ult and W to deal their damage, in an optimal situation where he hits just the ADC with Q and gets his full DoT damage off. Rumble on the other hand has a max of 2107.5 base damage if he was in the danger zone, and his DoT takes half the time Morde's does to deal its damage, while also being primarily AoE.

A penetration build could work pretty well on Morde, but at that point, he is just an inferior Rumble (lower scaling, less utility, less base damage). Rumble has the AP DoT fighter niche locked down solid (and he is a very good champion as well), and Morde needs his niche as the utterly immobile, utterly CC-less, supremely bursty, and nigh indestructible specter of pain given back to him, because he isn't gonna cut it as another AP DoT fighter, either thematically or mechanically.

I don't like the idea of making Morde's ult un-QSS-able, since that is one of the best ways to counter his burst and would leave him at a very lop-sided advantage over many opponents. I think the best way to make Morde more of a team player would be to make his ult put a damage enhancing debuff on the enemy, so the Morde and his allies all deal extra % damage to the target in question. This lets them either shred a tank, or burst a squishy, giving Morde a reason to ult somebody other than a carry for once. I'd also like it if his E had some sort of MR shred built in. It is a "Siphon of Destruction", yet all it does is deal damage. Destroying MR is good non-CC utility and a damage enhancer all in the same go.

T RexHasTinyArms1 votes

That is an AWESOME reply. Thanks man. I hadn't looked at the numbers, I just know rumble's general build includes a lot of pen and usually people do builds like that on good base damage/low scaling champs. Cool to see the actual numbers and yeah w/ current numbers that definitely looks kinda weak unless you get a good ghost, which is harder w/ less burst.

I think a damage buff on ult sounds like a cool fix, and I think increasing base damage, or building in drain or spell vamp maybe other than his items/ult (which would be really strong w/ what he builds/ ult that heals currently) might give him more options for a mpen build or for tanky sustained damage build, but then I'm not sure he'd have the threat to be worth focusing unless other team members were weak since no CC and not burst damage. I can definitely see where he might be in a place that is less strong than a lot of champs currently.

Again thank you for such a detailed post. I'm trying to decide between trying to pick up morde or vlad (I mainly play heimer top/mid), and since I watch a Heimer streamer called phasekiller who plays morde or karthus generally if heimer is banned I was leaning toward morde (plus the clubs skin looks really nice). That way I could learn while watching Heimer games any way. Maybe it's worth waiting a few games for vlad IP though since vlad is a really bad match up for Heimer top lane when my main gets picked, and he's stronger in meta and his numbers right now.

LifeCyclesTWA1 votes

Check out the thread I made on building Mordekaiser. I have over 1000 games played as him. Basically, tanky as hell with loads of magic pen.

A typical build should be Sunfire Cape, Sorc Boots, Abyssal Scepter as your core. Buy Sorc boots first vs mobile laner, Cape first vs AD laner, or scepter first vs AP laner.

After that, go full tank. Thornmail works extremely well with this because Abyssal Scepter allows Thornmail to return even more damage. If you need more AP or the other team is tanky, build Void Staff. People don't realize that Mordekaiser does not need AP to do loads of damage. Your spells are all AoEs, and between Sunfire and your W you'll be doing a solid amount of damage just by standing by someone.

With this setup, you should either lead your team or being in the top 2 on your team in damage every game and still be tanky as hell.

Optimal runes and Masteries: 4-21-5 (make sure to have a point in alchemy in utility tree

As another Morde player, I just want to mention that Morde has lower cooldowns than Rumble. Yes, Rumble has more damage in one rotation, but Morde gets his Q every 4 seconds and his E every 6 seconds. Combine that with being very durable and Morde is going to dish out a heck of a lot of damage as a fight goes on. Basically, Rumble is better in a short fight, but Morde is going to rip a team to shreds if he isn't out of the fight quick.

Also, the only damage in his kit that was reduced was his Creeping Death. His ghost is probably better now, albeit the stat gains for Morde are not necessarily better, but that doesn't mean he is reliant on getting it. The only significant change to his damage would be no DFG, but that wasn't needed on him anyway. I know I certainly never used it.

I still agree that he could use a little love. He makes a good sustained damage and durability AP champ, but some parts of his kit could use some tweaks. I always thought Siphon should siphon something (other than health into his shield), and he should have more help in getting his ghost.

Meh, liandries isn't as great as you'd think on Anivia. Maybe I'm biased because I don't think it's a great item on anyone aside from Swain Brand Karma and Elise, but I like to go for more of burst damage based playstyle. item 3027 item 3157 item 3135 item 3003 item 3089 item 3020

JustMyBassCannon2 votes

Yorick and Mordekaiser both have kits that need changes.

Anivia...eh, I think her kit's alright.

Trundle's a secret superpower bruiser.

When we talk about Mordekaiser not having CC, it's not so much that we want him to have CC, but rather that he lacks a strength that is common to most bruisers and mages, and his kit doesn't seem to have much compensation for that. He doesn't have the range or mobility of other CC-less champions, and his innate defensive tool--the shield-vamp--is only somewhat helpful.

LifeCyclesTWA1 votes

I understand what you are saying, but I believe he has a lot of untapped potential. I think he is just being built wrong at the moment, similar to how Riven used to be built as a tanky-dps when she was first released as opposed to this AD-fiend we know today.

His base damage is insane and I believe if people build tanky as hell with high magic pen he would function very similarly to a Nasus in that he has insane potential if left alone. I view Mordekaiser and Nasus as much the same champion.

item 3001 item 3068 item 3020 item 3075 item 3102 item 3065

The items here are cheap but synergize very damn well with him, resulting in a very Nasus-like champion that is very damn hard to kill and has the potential to 1v5 your team, but in return lacks hard CC and is easily kited.

JustMyBassCannon1 votes

A simple build shift isn't going to fix the fact that he's short-range and sustain-based.

Your build doesn't have any sustain, by the way. Spirit Visage alone isn't going to cut it. Mord's self-damage through his spells is a huge problem during laning, which is why revolver is pretty much always rushed on him.

And as for his potential, that's quite literally all attached to his ultimate. Mordekaiser has no real strength of his own, he has to borrow the enemy ADC to be a real threat.

LifeCyclesTWA1 votes

Again, Nasus.

I wouldn't touch Gunblade with a 20 foot pole on Morde for the same reason the best Morde players don't.

Late game the Revolver and the items it builds into are trash on Mord, WotA is built more often than Gunblade if its built at all by high-end Mords. High-end Mords either skip the item 3145 and grab Spell Vamp runes and a high-tier AP item (Such as Luden's) so that their spell vamp is more efficient and they hit a substantial damage spike (Luden's passive also benefits from spell vamp, which is why is good on a champ like Mord that builds spell vamp), or they build the Revolver and eventually sell it in favor of a high-tier AP item because Mordekaiser is weak vs CC due to his squishiness. End-game, if he gets jumped on by the enemy team his spell-vamp won't save him. This is why Mord's trash the spell vamp items in favor of high-AP items so they kill the enemy before the enemy kills them.

Early game, potions solve his sustain problem until you get that high tier AP item.

His spells also hit instaneously to multiple targets, not very many if any champions can say they have 2 AoEs on short CDs that do all of their damage upfront. If you land your Q and E on 4 targets at the same time in a teamfight, that is a 4.0 AP ratio. You can do that Q+E combo like every 5 seconds. The best of AP Burst mages have a total AP burst ratio of 2.65? And that is including ultimates. I haven't even included Mord's ultimate into his side of the equation. His damage potential is insane Issue is, this rarely ever happens in a teamfight and chances are it won't given his current popular build amongst players.

Mord players build full on AP currently, the only armor/res items they tend to buy are item 3001 and item 3157 . I feel like if people were to build him more tanky we would see a massive difference in his strength.

It would be as if people had been playing AP Leona mid-lane all this time then someone finally stepped up and said, "Wait everyone! If you build her this way and play her this way, she makes an EXCELLENT support! You don't need to build so much if any AP at all on her!"

Same with Mord. If people stopped building full AP on him and realized that he is actually set-up very well to absorb loads of damage on the frontlines while dishing a ton out, he'd be damn great. As he stands, he hopes no one saved their CC for him when he eventually charges into the fight 5-10 seconds after it started. Not to mention if he were built full-on tanky his ghost would last longer too, because not only does he benefit from staying alive longer because the ghost does as well, it receives a portion of his bonus health.

JustMyBassCannon1 votes

{quoted}

Again, Nasus.

Is not similar, because he has CC, and is not wholly dependent upon one skill to be useful late-game.

LifeCyclesTWA1 votes

He has a single target slow on an 11 second CD and he is entirely designed upon using one skill to be useful late game. I have not seen a single Nasus ever carry a game in which he was not able to farm his Q.

Again, Mordekaiser with only 300 AP lets say, can hit the enemy team with 1 single Q+E combo for 1800 base damage before AP and 3000 damage with AP. 3000 damage every 5 seconds with only 300 AP from 2 spells. That is why Mord gets Pentakills if he isn't focused and killed. That is why Mord has no mobility. Because with 300 AP he can blow a whole enemy team the fuck up with his Q and E, completely ignoring the fact his ultimate can turn one of the poor fuckers he blew up against his own team.

JustMyBassCannon2 votes

Useful != Carry

Never mind that his ultimate deals %HP damage and then grants him bonus AD based on the damage dealt, Nasus still tanks a ton of damage, sustains a lot during combat, can shut down a carry and even has a bit of Armor Shred on the side for good measure.

Mordekaiser has damage and sustain. While that's not nothing, that's all he has, barring giving an ally a tiny bit of Armor/MR for 6 seconds.

Again, Mordekaiser with only 300 AP lets say, can hit the enemy team with 1 single Q+E combo for 1800 base damage before AP and 3000 damage with AP. 3000 damage every 5 seconds with only 300 AP from 2 spells. His Q only hits 4 targets, so someone isn't taking that much damage.

Also, it doesn't sound so bat-shit insane if you break it down to what he actually does; he deals 430 to five units and 320 to four units, assuming they're all standing in a mid-sized AoE. And this is before MR. Unless they built no MR and had no scaling MR, that damage will be reduced. Meanwhile, in the real game, you have teams that don't clump up and make themselves easy targets.

LifeCyclesTWA1 votes

You are over-glorifying Nasus while shitting on Mordekaiser. Look, in the "real game" as you say, if Nasus ults then everyone gets away from him. He is incredibly easy to kite and can be shut down by a carry no problem. Same with Mord. They both have the same exact weaknesses in teamfights. Deals great damage if close to enemy, but has trouble getting to the enemy in the first place. In a truly competitive ranked game, good luck slowing/getting to the enemy carry in the first place without a gap closer because they will be well-defended in the back-line.

Bottom line is if you were to play Mordekaiser and build him tanky right off the bat instead of starting off with a gunblade and whatnot you'd love Mordekaiser. Test out that build I posted. You'll be less like a pepsi can and more like a work truck. Saying "X champ is weak without their ult" is insane, especially when their ult has as much potential has Mordekaiser's. If you build tanky, you'll actually live long enough for your ghost to wreck face instead of dying instantaneously to whatever the other team throws at you.

I see Nasus succeed more often than Mordekaiser. Surprise, I have an opinion formulated due to that. It's almost like experience creates a bias.

Nasus can pretty much guarantee that he gets close to at least one target without any help from his team. He also tends to draw focus, because he deals a lot of damage without building damage. He is immediately more threatening than Mordekaiser in any situation outside of Nasus having absolutely no farm and/or Mordekaiser having a noticeable level/gold advantage.

Bottom line is if you were to play Mordekaiser and build him tanky right off the bat instead of starting off with a gunblade and whatnot you'd love Mordekaiser. Test out that build I posted. I know that AP Kaiser is a pile of trash. If anything, the few matches shown in match history corroborate that fact. What it doesn't show is past attempts at playing Tank Kaiser with even less success. Unless you're the only target in a fight, you're not going to be focused by any intelligent players. So you don't tank for your team, and you don't deal enough damage to scare Scuttle Crab.

Also, when you play Tanky, you basically mark someone and hope your team kills them so that you can deal damage--the one thing Mordekaiser can do--because you built very low damage.

LifeCyclesTWA1 votes

I am not denying Nasus is amazing, I am just shocked by your Mordekaiser hatred.

Like at the end where you say,

Also, when you play Tanky, you basically mark someone and hope your team kills them so that you can deal damage--the one thing Mordekaiser can do--because you built very low damage.

When you play top lane, especially in this meta, you shouldn't be expected to carry your team to victory through your immense damage. Thats your ADCs and your APCs job. And while you won't be leading every game in damage, you'll be above average for damn sure. So mash down on the enemy team with your team, ult someone right before they die so they don't QSS out of it or the support doesn't heal them/shield them, and then you're basically guaranteed the victory because the enemy team has to focus you (but you're a tank huehuehue) or take damage from you and your ghost. BTW, if they focus you or your ghost your team is going to destroy them.

I wonder if there is a statistic somewhere that shows what % of fights Mordekaiser and his team have won when he successfully ulted an enemy at the beginning of a fight. It should be pretty damn high.

But anyways, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

JustMyBassCannon1 votes

I wouldn't say that I hate Mordekaiser, more that I hate what he has become since his ancient nerfs that still gimp him horridly.

The one and only reason Mordekaiser's damage output ends up at the highest end is because of minions.

And I'm not necessarily expecting to carry because "OMG the deeps!" But when literally the one and only contribution the champion has to a fight is damage, and their defensive tool is about as strong as the average melee AD carry, when your actual team fight damage is outdone by pretty much every single mage, bruiser and even some tanks, it can get just a bit frustrating.

So mash down on the enemy team with your team, ult someone right before they die so they don't QSS out of it or the support doesn't heal them/shield them, and then you're basically guaranteed the victory because the enemy team has to focus you (but you're a tank huehuehue) or take damage from you and your ghost. That's basically exactly how it works. You go into a fight, hope they're going to stay in range of your spells, hope that they don't know better than to focus you, and hope that your team kills the enemy ADC while your ultimate is still on them.

You can compare Mordekaiser to all the other slow melee bruisers, and they all have more mechanics outside of damage to compensate for the fact that they are slow and melee. And they all tend to have equal to, if not greater than, Mordekaiser's DPS.

Yes, Mordekaiser has his kit advantages and his ideal games. Yes, Mordekaiser is playable. No, Mordekaiser is not fine. If he's meant to be a mage-bruiser, he needs to be able to get into fights. If he's meant to be a tank-mage, he needs to have defensive power and utility.
