Learning Riven & the tremendous amount of Hatred

So I've been trying out Riven in normals trying to learn how to play a new top lane champion. Innocent enough right? But the sheer amount of animosity towards me the second I enter the Rift is mind blowing...and this is coming from someone who plays Nidalee occasionally.

I've gotten junglers who literally would never leave or gank any other lanes just to see me suffer. "Gragas, really?" I would say, and in response "That's right, fuck you hoe".

I've gotten 2v1 lanes, and a Plat Garen saying "screw you for coming top, this Riven was shit I could've killed her a lot more" at the end of a match.

Smiley faces at my death.

"At least Riven is dead" comments.

Champs diving turrets, saving ults and CC, not for the ADC or Kat or Zed - but for the already underleveled/underfarmed me.

Don't get me wrong though - I'm not whining nor am I complaining. In fact I think it's already starting to make me a smarter, more stoic player overall and makes me that much more determined to completely learn Riven and decimate with her. This is more of a cautionary tale for new Riven players, and the players who despise her and will stop at nothing to make her life hell. Just remember the stronger the flame the stronger the sword that is forged.

And soon enough - even a broken blade will be more than enough for the likes of you :)

You get used to it. Just do your best to ignore them and still show good sportsmanship, regardless of how you're treated.

The same thing happens to me when play Nidalee mid. All they did was was made me want to keep playing Nid more and more. The reaction I get when I hit a long spear is priceless xD

Don't worry about it. Rivens are often stereotyped as superiority complex afflicted, toxic hotshots who either leave or flame. As Seriphym mentioned, think about the other champs people hate.

LeeSin People hate me as well. Nidalee Ditto. Fizz Me three. Kalista We know of the hatred we brew. Zed I don't give a fuck what people say about me.

In general people hate safer champions and champions capable of killing them. Riven is usually both, so, yeah.

Though people will hate you no matter what you pick if you do good.

Ive played riven top a lot and i dont really get flamed like this.. more so ppl are just afraid when i get fed.. then they flame the "person" (even though there are many) who "gave" me kills. Perhaps this is because of the new black cleaver that you are getting the teemo global taunt passive.

I rarely get much hate as a Riven player. Perhaps it's your ELO? Granted I haven't played her much recently but I used to a ton in the past.

Occasionally you get a bad apple, and yes you often get camped, but with your mobility and proper warding that should never be an issue. In fact, Riven is one of the few champions who's capable of 1v2 getting a double kill during a jungle gank if you play her properly.

I think when you do poorly you tend to be the butt of more rage, both from your teammates as well as enemies who feel like they need to humilate you for whatever reason. I got lots of insults while I was learning Azir (because fk is he hard to learn) but now that I'm good with him I get so many compliments it's crazy. So I think your performance probably has more to do with it than anything.

In general, I would love to be camped by the enemy jungler. I can farm safely from tower. My enemy laner will share XP with the Jungler and hence will be under leveled. The enemy jungler will share xp with the laner instead of clearing camps, and hence will be under leveled. I'll know where their jungler is (ganking me) and hence my teammates won't be feeding to enemy ganks.

Pretty much an easy win (especially if your jungler is smart at all) as long as your other 2 lanes don't feed in lane despite not getting ganked at all.

Your learning to play a champ this is cancer.

Teemo, Eve, Zed, Riven, Vlad

All get hate for exsisting. Thicken up your skin or play a champ that is not so troll.

In all fairness, most top laners, especially riven, usually shouldn't need ganks unless their going against someone like nasus

As another Riven player myself, I noticed that playing her affects one's personality during the game. It isn't a coincidence that Riven players have the highest leave rate of all champions in LoL.

Her kit has unparalleled AD scaling. She can essentially overpower any opponent if they fail to kill her quickly.

This encourages Riven players to play highly aggressively, and I believe that it influences one's temperament.

That aside, the key to playing Riven is mastering her E. Her E is highly versatile, it can be used to avoid poke, gap close, and animation cancel.

Riven has one of the strongest spikes from her ultimate. Learn how to maximize the shield on your E, stall the game until 6, and it will be an easy win.

you will know how cancerous riven is once you now her engage combo from like across the map

Sure, I don't like Riven from a balancing standpoint (but that's for another thread), but I don't hate Riven players.

I hate Riven players who are assholes about playing Riven, either on my team or the enemy.

But that goes for any champion, really.
