Would more magic pen and MR itemization benefit the game?

Right now tanks have item 3065 item 3102 item 3111 . On the flip side mages have item 3151 item 3001 item 3135 item 3020 .

Would more MR/magic pen itemization benefit the game?

No, it's fine as is.

i agree. Any changes might fuck stuff up. Mage players think that they need more magic pen while tank players feel like they need more MR.

Void staff is actually quite amazing at penetrating MR. Also you forgot item 3020. It's not a ton but it is something.

The problem is...

Tanks build item 3065 item 3102 item 3111

And stupid people DON'T build item 3151 item 3001 item 3135 item 3020

Then they whine and bitch about not being able to kill tanks.

that's pretty true. The classic "tanks only need a spirit visage against mages" when the guy has a build like item 3158 item 3285 item 3089 item 3157 item 3100 item 3027

Yeah, that's all they build because there are so many bad players who stick to their tried and true mobafire build and never change. What's funny is every one of those items has AP except the boots.

I think it would actually hurt tanks.

When facing a mixed team, a tank builds mixed resistances. A tank can only have 6 items, so it has to choose which is the best item for each resistance type.

If you give more MR but also more Pen, you actually make mix resistances weaker and tanks themselves become weaker as everyone is stacking a form of penetration.

Now if damage was weaker? Maybe, but as it is now I don't think it's a good idea.

There's already a lot of magic resist items, however, most of them are not for tanks, sadly. item 3156 item 3139 for AD item 3001 for AP item 3190 item 3174 for support

As for armor, there is no item that gives both armor and offensive stats (why that I mean AD, AP, AS, crit, etc. not flat damage like sunfire, gauntlet or dead man's plate) except for item 3157 which has such a high portion of the gold investment soaked up by the active that I don't think this is a decent armor item. In a lot of circumstances, you want the active without the armor or vice versa. How do you counter syndra ult? With Zhonya's, but if their team doesn't have much AD, that kind of sucks. Same thing applies with QSS and magic resist, though.

we also have locket for someone like shen. I'd honestly like another mr item or two just because i dislike banshees as is.

It's difficult for a lot of mages though to justify building Liandri's or Abyssal. If you're not in range to benefit from Abyssal and if you can't spam your spells or have a built in CC/Continuous Damage to your spells Liandri's doesn't work either. In other words most of the time you're left with sorc boots and void which is core on most mages anyways.

That being said I like overall the balance on MR itemization vs. Magic Pen items as it currently stands.

yes. Many games make me want to build a second spirit visage simply because there aren't any other options.

no, it would just make mage builds narrow and boring like they used to be

I think the reason that tanks have less MR options is because in general mages don't hit tanks as much and when they do it's usually just some burst and not massive sustained damage like ADCs output. Mages have more range and utility in their kits so by design they're in general supposed to be more aggressive than burning the front line down.
