The Dev's on Taliyah

From the recent "interview" on the News page:

WHAT WE COULD HAVE DONE BETTER While the payoffs are great, we think we missed the mark on just how difficult it is to play Taliyah effectively. Input complexity combined with the amount of strategic thinking she requires makes what seems like a straightforward kit deceptively complex. The type of roam and cutoff plays that she excels at are significantly more powerful in coordinated play, so we will have issues with her being a dominant pro pick whenever she is strong (Azir and Kalista are similar).

I sort of feel like this is a cop out.

Azir is hard (for me to play) and Kalista less so, but I've seen them played in Bronze 5 games by absolute monsters. And you know their monsters long before you take them on at the mid-game. Taliyah, to me, has been strong in my games, but I also don't feel like she's comparable to either of those champs.

I'd go so far as saying that had too many things added in that worked in theory, didn't in practice, and need to be overhauled. Every once in awhile I see some folks get into a group and go "Ok, so what if..." and it's a fun exercise, but it produces garbage. Taliyah to me is the outcome of a few too many "Ok so what if..." conversations.

She seemingly has a trade off with her rock toss thing (this is how often I play her), and her movement speed, but unlike more champ-choices, you are really stuck with that decision for along time. In other words, I don't get to choose multi-shot/movement speed. I choose it one time, and then the choice is made for me the next 6 times.

Her anti-dash mechanism (imo) is fun but it's too niche. It's like an apology for Yasuo. It doesn't farm effectively until you have items, and there aren't that many dashing ADCs in the bot lane if you want to us her as a support. Which I really think she be the intent of her rework (Make her viable as support, not make her a support) because while you work out the kinks with her, you'll allow a lot more players to get a feel for her while they auto-fill.

And let's call things as they are, we could use some more effective supports.

Personaly, I think Taliyahs worked ground isn't as bad as many people claim it is. Sure it lowers your damage output, but you get other benefits from it (movementspeed and cooldown refund (50%) ) It rewards people who know how to play with the worked ground and her latest changes show that Riot is looking out for her damage output on worked ground.

The E damage comes with its bonus damage, so trying to clear waves with it is only usefull when combining it with your W

ADCs without a dash can be thrown into the E very easily.

Ha, oh shoot, can you throw someone across it and have it count as a dash? Man oh man, I need to give this a shot.

That is her burst pattern, and with the update they did to her W cast paradigm (no longer locks you out of your other abilities) you can cast it, see that it is going to hit someone, and then put down her E and get the bonus damage.

Very rewarding combo, especially when combined with a full Q.

But Worked Ground Q doesn't refund 50% cooldown. It was planned, but Riot reverted it.

I think her "problems" only became problems when they overbuffed her Q on release with the 50% bonus damage on minions. Frankly, that was never needed. She had her E to clear the wave and it was WAY STRONGER prior to patch 6.14. She had very healthy burst patterns and clear counterplay because how her W worked. Inexperienced players will recklessly use her W in hopes of landing it. Experienced players will wait until the enemy engages. Now that W and E are nerfed, her only reliable damage source is Q. If MR and HP are built against Taliyah, she will do next to nothing in terms of damage. Especially her E because of the percentage falloff stacking up by 15% to a max of 55%.

Personally I enjoy Taliyah and wouldn't want to see anything changed to her Q. Maybe she could use some built in CDR on her Q? That's about it. An overlooked quality of Taliyah is that during her Q she is able to still perform any actions that she wants. This includes movement to her next ground to work, casting other spells simultaneously and most importantly auto attacking to trigger thunderlords. The anti-dash mechanic on her E is wonderful, Taliyah has insane control in the jungle due to her E. A very unique champion once you have her W mastered. Manipulation is the key.
