Why I miss the old masteries.

I miss them because they were flexible. You could go 21/9/0 or 0/9/21 like how the current system has 18/12/0, but this system just doesn't have the flexibilty of the old system. I used to previously go 21/6/3 and 30/0/0 and similar variants, which are just either impossible or unviable in todays mastery system.

Furthermore, this mastery system has gone from being a secondary source of power to nearly a primary source of power. Stormraiders, thunderlords, windspeakers, and all the other keystones are really cool yeah, but there's simply no trade off for picking them. It isn't stats vs extra damages (or defenses). They are just there and pretty muchy required because they add to a champion as much, if not occasionally more than their own passive or ability might.

Going from flexible secondary power to locked primary power. We've stepped down from the awesomeness of the old system. Primary power is conceptually cool but with its sheer limitations in this system it becomes a gimmick that can break champions. What I want from masteries is subtle changes to gameplay (increase cap to cdr, add magic damage to autos, etc.) rather than (extra x damage every 10 seconds, as you attack you gain stacks that deal extra damage up to 100... as you lose hp you gain insane lifesteal... And it continues). The primary violators are warlords, fervor, thunderlords, stormraider's surge, and grasp.

yeah I agree.

I do hope we go back to the old system of having a plethora of masteries to choose from and get that flexibility back.

This seasons mastery trees have been disappointing and restricting for the cause of diversity and playstyle.

I agree 100%

Let's see what the next season changes.

You can still go builds where you don't max out anything - its just not very good. It's the same as the last system, you go to the end of the tree and use the rest of your points into a second tree.

I like the new system a lot better. The old system it was just stat buffs while you can actually feel the effect of stuff like DFT or Thunderlords.

You did feel the last mastery tree, it just didn't make itself blatantly obvious and force you to completely play around it.

The only two keystones that you are "forced" to work around are Thunderlords and Stormraiders. All the other ones come naturally with playing. The only time I felt the last mastery tree is when I used the wrong ones, I never felt like "wow that 5 extra damage to that enemy really helped me there". It feels much better when I get a kill because of the DFT tick on jhin.

Do note I didn't list DFT as one of the problematic keystones.

I don't really like some of the damage oriented ones. Grasp, Warlord's, Fervor, maybe even Thunderlord's are jokes. Thunderlord I don't like mainly because it can be procced in one spell for some champs (morg pool, karma tether). At least Lux has to hit a spell and get in auto range if she wants to proc it in one spell (with an auto).

Warlord's pretty much broke Tryn and Yasuo on release. Then turned into some kind of last-line situational lifesteal mastery. Fervor is just ridiculously strong mid-lategame. It even adds up fairly well early-mid game. 80 extra damage per auto at max Fervor stacks? What a joke. Grasp was the worst...getting far more nerfs than anything.

Fervor actually gives more damage than 80 max level and max stacks, it gives 112, which is pretty nice.

Seriously it's just a huge chunk of damage. For some on hit champions, (kayle, kog, and many adcs), fervor adds 10-40% of their dps. Grasp was awesome lanig material and then nerfed to the point where anything else was better. Thunderlord's isn't even interesting, just some more damage for doing what you already do. Warlord's should have been omnivamp for it to be truly fair, and furthermore the concept itself wasn't very original.

I think this is what riot wanted.

They got what they wanted.

But is the player base really happy with it?

This is sort of lockean in that adding more actually reduces the overall gameplay. It's not fun to have really, as it makes the rest of your decisions less impactful overall. It only seems appealing, but Riot is so out of touch with their game that they don't realize that.

I don't really miss that 3% increase in damage at the end of offense.

It could always be played around to be less generic.

Why? Then they wouldn't be doing what the old masteries did. Be a secondary power.

5% of AP on auto attack (spellblade) was a secondary power but it wasn't a generic power. Windspeakers is a secondary power. 5% increased cdr cap is a secondary power. Neither are as generic as just an overall damage increase. I agree, that's not that interesting.

6/6/18 is viable on some champs but that's about it.

Woah! Didn't even know anything other than 18 and 12 combinations were viable.

Leona is probably the best 6/6/18 user. It allows her to dip into expose weakness on Ferocity and biscuits in cunning. Granted, you give up bandit to do this which may or may not be worth it depending on how much you value expose weakness.

Bandit is freaking amazing and I take it on all my melee top laners.
