Let's Brainstorm a Solution to Dynamic Queue

Pierce The Veal··106 votes·5,586 views

Before you get downvote happy, I'm here because I'm 100% sure there's a solution that would keep only one queue and also satisfy both solo and dynamic queue advocates.

I know that dynamic queue is not everyone's favorite thing, but I'm pretty sure that if everyone brainstormed together, we could keep the good sides of both solo and dynamic queue without having to split the queues.

Again, please, this thread is for rational thought, or support or rational disagreement with rational thought. Upvote for support, but don't outright downvote because I or someone else mentioned "dynamic ; in their post.

Edit: Woah! This thread exploded! Keep up the good work guys! I'll read through the comments tomorrow morning, and put the most liked or useful sounding ones in the edits. For now I'm too poofed after some work, hanging with some friends, and playing some URF.

Edit: sorry about pages of me quoting people. I access forums on mobile, and I'm usually pretty busy, so I make all my replies in bursts. You might see the occasional page of me just replying to people lol

Edit: Help prove to Riot that civilized discussion does prevail in the boards. Upvote or bump even if you can't join the discussion!

Edit: Some of the best ideas not involving splitting the queues include:

  1. including a small chance of having to fill for every player, especially in large premades
  2. Making it optional for solo players to be matched up with and against premades. "Click this checkbox if you are willing to be matched up with premades for faster queue times." This way premades have to treat people who join then better otherwise they have to wait another 20 minutes in queue.
  3. Voice chat would be nice
  4. ???
  5. Profit

There is no solution, dynamic just can't work as a competitive mode.

Is a glorified normal.

You can't even fix dynamic alone. (the mmr can't and will NEVER be able to make fast balanced games accounting premades and roles, the mmr range in dynamic is so massive it's like normal)

It doesn't have to be fully dynamic queue anymore in the solution either. My suggestion was to make it so premades must be matched up against similar premades. So 4 man premade? Too bad, they have to wait for another 4 man premade.

This mean to triple+ the queue times and/or getting premades like 2 league above/below. (in current dynamic you can already see crazy stuff like silver/gold/plats in the same ranked game)

it can't be done.

Only real solution is to get rid of role pick... that's the thing inflating queue times the most. But if you do that, dynamic will full implode since big premades will bully solo/duo into side roles.

role pick and dynamic is a hell combo balance-wise.

Maybe make Ranked be the mode where 4 man premades are prohibited, but draft dynamic allows anything, because it's a normal game. That way, you have 1/2/3 man parties, and then there are 5 man premades against other 5 man premades. I think ranked is the only mode this should apply in.

Wait! I just realized something!

We can keep 4 mans, just give solo players a checkbox that allows them to choose whether they want to be matched up with 4 man premades. This makes it so that 4 mans also have to be a lot more gracious because they don't want to wait 30 more minutes for another solo player.

There! 5 mans against 5 mans, 3 mans with 2 mans against 3 mans with 2 mans, and 4 mans woth a willing 5th against 4 mans with another willing 5th!

Solo players have zero incentive to allow themselves to be matched with 4's ever. That would just extend 4 man queue times.

3 mans are less common than 2 mans which would put 2 mans in high demand like how supports are in high demand, causing queues for duos to extend to half an hour or more at all elos.

Aside from instant queue times, sure. I personally don't mind playing with premades and would pick this option.

That said, I don't think that's the ideal solution, either.

Those are all just bandaids that will also kill the mmr.

And you know, for a solo, 3 man is no better than 4 man. (if you want to make those trio+duo only, that mean 2h queue)

So you have to also "ban" those...

Doesn't work, a solo will still be put with the 4 man and that's unacceptable.

"dynamic queue can't be fixed because of this problem"

so what if the mmr and elo is adjusted in a way that makes it less problematic, if not fixed entirely?

Zenthon Prime23 votes

The main issue with Dynamic Queue is basically impossible to fix: having teams and solo players on the same ladder greatly warps the value of ranking. This is in addition to the massive issues in matchmaking it causes at higher (Masters+) MMR.

Frankly, Dynamic Queue as it is now cannot and will not work at Masters+ no matter what changes are made. Anything that high in the rankings should be pure soloqueue or at least locked to duos. Aside from that, the only "improvement" I can think of to Dynamic Queue is removal of 4-man premades, which really aren't needed and create bad games probably 75% of the time for the solo player.

My ideal Dynamic Queue would look like this:

  • Bronze - Diamond: solos, duos, 3-mans + 5-mans (which are only matched with other 5-mans, and this applies to all rankings)
  • Diamond - Master: solos, duos + 5-mans
  • Challenger: pure soloqueue + 5-mans

This way Riot can appeal to the casuals while still maintaining competitive integrity at higher levels of play. Challenger would arguably be more competitive than in previous seasons. 5-mans are also still around at upper ranks in case pro or amateur teams want team practice, but they can't be matched with non-5-mans to prevent complete BS matchmaking.

While I really like your suggestion, you are diving dinamic queue into 2 queues, one of which is 1/2/3 and the other for 5mans. This would increase the queue times by quite a lot especially for 5man stacks. If we make them (5s) more likely to face other 5s then you don't need to divide the queue. For example when you queue as 5 you wait 5 minutes for another 5man stack before it throws you into the queue with everyone else.

5mans are already mostly matched against 5mans (95% or something like that), so it wouldn't impact queue times that much. I think it's an acceptable trade-off.

I don't think 5man should turn off in challenger. It's still fine to pit 5man vs 5man, though they might have insane queue times.

I don't understand what all the hate is about. I play with/against premades all the time and from time to time I get invited into one. Its easy if you just don't go into it ASSUMING they are out to get you. Most players just want to play to win, and you can win a multitude of ways, its just important go work to build a strategy. If I notice that I'm queued with a 4 man premade I just ask what their team comp is gonna look like and try to play to compliment it. For example, last night I was with a team that had an ekko, corki, maokai, and Leona. I looked at it, we had cc, tank, and burst, so I asked if they would like me to play cleanup crew and took a Caitlyn into the game. The game went extremely well and they all worked to feed me minions and I just helped when their burst wasn't enough. Was a rather fun game, but I knew they were playing to win, they weren't out to get me or harass me.

The issue starts in higher elo. About 32% of league players are in Bronze, so it doesn't affect you since you are in that Elo. Whlile it effects high elo because there are very limited amount of players. Not every person has 2-4 diamond friends who would like to Queue with the for premade, in fact most high elos are Solo Queues. We don't have 20mil+ Players in our elo, you do.

Most players just want to play to win, and you can win a multitude of ways, its just important go work to build a strategy.

How would you know, you haven't even hit a Competitive Rank.

KOC rule4 votes

Oh man, same guy same shit, w/e.

How would you know, you haven't even hit a Competitive round.

Ok, this logic is so flawed it's disgusting, I don't have to say anything for people to realized that fact. "Most players just want to play to win", understandable, and true for ranked players (since you're using this as an argument). "you haven't even hit a competitive round", just, please think about that. You know what competitive players what to do? Win

Please, try and make a real argument in your response.

ZeeWolfZ13 votes

Fine, I'll give you a proper Argument.

Negatives:

  • Players ranging from silver experiencing 8+ min queue times.
  • Solo Queue players do not play ranked anymore.
  • High Elo players can go from 15-40 min queue times.
  • Pressing 'FIll' = 99% Support role
  • Pro players waiting up to 90 minutes for a Queue to be faced vs 4 man premades due to lack of players in High Elo.
  • Elo Boosting service is provided on TWITCH without consequences while Rioters watch
  • Bronze/silver last season accounts are comfortably sitting at High Plat/Diamond 5 elos (Easy Elo Boosting)
  • Select/Pick/Ban process takes 6 minutes and at times Longer

Positives:

  • You can rank with your friends
  • You can elo boost your friends without consequences

Please, try to obtain a real rank before trying to argue about Ranked System.

KOC rule6 votes

Ok, I know Silver players aren't getting 8 minute queue times lol, sure, they happen on occasion, a rare occasion. Except for SoloQ players do play ranked, they are the ones pitching a fit about it. Once again, crazy queue times happen on occasion, and they were still long last season. Yes, this is true, and the less and less people pick support the more that happens. Not saying you're lying on this one, but I need a reference to believe it. tbh, elo boosting is pretty useless past gold lmao, if they're bad players then there's no point in elo boosting, they'll fall back into their rank eventually, hopefully realizing their play needs work. Yes, believe it or not people require time to think about their choices

Remember all the people at the start of the season excited about this? This is a huge positive from them

Sorry, are you scared that a bronzie can beat you in an argument? Read my last response to you if you're looking for an answer to that.

A Miss Fortune5 votes

Another consequence that wasn't directly mentioned is that your rank means literally nothing now, when anyone can easily queue up with significantly more experienced friends and climb with ease. You don't know if a D5 player is genuinely a good player, or just got boosted. So universally ranking means nothing unless you want to spend hours reviewing a person's entire ranked match history for the season. There just isn't a reason to play ranked if your rank itself means nothing.

The biggest issue i have with premades is that you are going to practically be held into that game against your will. Even if they troll, feed, flame, grief, or just downright suck that game, you can never just /ff and move on with your life because obviously they have the majority of the votes.

I dont want to be stuck in a game that is clearly lost just so 4 people can fuck around in voice chat as i sit there twiddling my thumbs while i get 4 man tower dove by the enemy premade.

This is exactly it.

Dynamic queue = normal draft mode.

Publish the Elo for people who play that mode and put the rest of the game back.

Basically DQ is trying to bank on the 5+ years of "rep" ranked (as solo queue) has in establishing skillful players.

Trying to pretend there's some solution to "fix" DQ is willful ignorance to the fundamentals of what makes a ranking system. The discussion and changes should have been to remove duo queue from ranked, not add in everything else.

The League standing (Elo) of players is no longer comparable across the board since there are a million different ways to get there, you are essentially trading social currency for rank, which is crap.

Secondly, the player experience going in with/against premades is awful. It's always been awful, but since most regular players queue ranked its never been an issue before, since most of your games would be in ranked. There is no fix for this that does not allow a separate queue for solo players, so your fix would be to have separate queues but a single Elo, the only purpose of which would be to again obfuscate individual performance.

a. Voice Chat b. Knowing who are preamade and who are not.

And then you can keep your Dynmic Q. Because playing a game where everyone solo and playing a game with premade and agains premade is totally different thing. Thats at least something that can make solo vs premade equal.

P.S. Fek users, how did i earned the fishhead badge under my avatar?

i'm fairly sure the voice chat would result in a higher amount of toxicity and would be harder to monitor. Knowingly i suggest a higher amount of lp awarded to solo players (qued with pre-mades otherwise no increase if all solo), so it acts as an incentive to those that are qued with pre-mades.

You're not trying to satisfy both sides, you're trying to do what is best for game health. Dynamic queue is not a good system from a game health perspective. It's like compromising on nerfs and buffs. Don't nerf Zed because Zed players will be sad! what's a solution that both sides are happy with? there isn't one, Zed is cancer and needs nerfs for the sake of game health.

Jesus, everyone needs to chill, I understand the hate for DynamicQ, 'cuz I fucking hate it as well. It's obvious now that Riot want it to stay though, so might as well come up with a solution to make it better for solo players.

I think if they were to get rid of 4-man's, then it can open up some opportunities. How? Well if Riot were to get rid of 4-man's, that means that the system can become less reliant on solo players for it to actually work. The 3-man's and the duo's can be on the same team, so solo players do not have to be matched with or against these 3-man's and duo's. If that happens it's possible we could see more solo players be matched up against ACTUAL SOLO PLAYERS.

By the way I'm not saying that 3-man's and duos will be put on the same team every time, but if we got rid of 4-man's it could definitely happen more often.

1Maza8 votes

Dynamic = fun with friends = Normal games

Solo Q = competitive = Ranked games

I don't see what's so complicated.

Gene Freakz7 votes

As so many others have said, they would have to get rid of premade 4s and only allow solos, 2s, 3s, and 5s. Solo players could only play against solo players, 5s only against 5s, and 2s and 3s could get matched together. This might make queue times for 2s and 3s long since solo players as of now are filling in some of the holes. This might lead to an even bigger relaxing in mmr which would not be good.

This invites a problem though: there would be solo mmr and premade mmr that would basically be the same in the same ranked system. This is assuming that players would swap between playing solo and premade. There could be a lot of matchmaking issues if you do really well in your premade but not your solo climb and vice versa. But, this is what seems to be happening currently.

We are mostly hearing the side of solo players who say they do not like being matched with premades regardless of if their team does good or bad. What do the premades think though? Without solo players they would not be able to play or may face really long queue times. In a perfect world their would be a separate ranking system for solo, 2s and 3s, and 5s. Only speculation could tell at this point what the queue times would be for such a system.

Playing with friends should not go away and it will always exist in normals. The problem people have right now is that it exists in the same realm as ranked soloq. A true soloq involving 10 random players of similar mmr seems to be the most fair for soloq. Yes, it is random and no matter how good a player is they will have bad games with bad teammates and raging and everything in between. The problem is that premades make ranked even more random. People who have played together before who may be using voice chat add another element of randomness to the mix and with the changes to third party websites, it is not always clear who is premade and who is solo.

My fix to this problem would be to see what happens with separate ranked systems - solo, 2s and 3s, and 5s would all have their own mmr. People say queue times will be bad but maybe they won't and maybe premades will play normals instead and won't complain. The converse could be true as well, but we won't know until it is actually tried.

xenos of the air4 votes

It should also be noted that this system of 2,3,5 premade ranked and a pure solo ranked has been implemented effectively in multiple other mobas such as dota, smite, vain and glory, and countless others that show this system works and can let both the solo ranked and team ranked players be satisfied. Given the data that we have on this type of dynamic que/solo que setup and the way it addresses virtually all the problems in our current situation i see no logical reason to not implement this system.

  1. Knowing who's premade or not. I have won and lost simply because the people knew who are the duos/premades. Also we can be aware if Riot's matchmaking is doing its job. Seems pretty fair for both sides, premades or not, so they know what kind of things to expect.
  2. I personally hardly ever have problems dealing with 4-mans, but on paper it just sounds like an outright terrible idea. It's either people go as 1, 2, or 3 people. Sorry, I know there are some people who go as groups of 4, but what about times where people like going as groups of 6 and one person has be be left out regardless? IMO they should be ranking up in the same mode if anyone wants faster Q's.
  3. Bring back ranked 5s. What's even better is there are no ranked restrictions if anyone remembered that.
  4. Since Diamond+ have much less players, make it restrict to 5-mans and solo/duos only.
  5. Report button in champ select. We all know it's already tedious enough from having to shoot a support ticket just to report people because of their behavior in champ select. This gives solo players (and smaller premade groups) some kind of "relief" and "power" where in case they are stuck with nasty premades, or just even players.

A little compilation of many people's ideas as well as my own.

Also, not sure if this thread "baits" the sane players, or people are actually sane enough to realize that dynamicQ will not be removed, but can only be fixed at best. And I like this thread.

ModCaptainMårvelous4 votes

Make dynamic queue only accept 2/3/5 man parties. Abolish 4 man groups from the queue. Put in a true solo queue for those who ABSOLUTELY must play alone.

Now the two systems can live in peace.

WadeWilson13374 votes

Lets be real here, Riot is not going to get rid of DynamicQ and SoloQ is not going to be implemented. They could, but clearly wont change the matchmaking system to absolutely enforce 5 man vs 5 man 4 man vs 4 man etc etc.

This being the case, THE ONLY POSSIBLE SOLUTION is to have two different MMRs. If you are in a premade, you have a premade mmr that is based off of your games where you qued up with atleast one more person. If you are solo dolo, then that will be your mmr. Hell, they could even give people two elos, and have them sit next to each other in their profile.

Its not exactly ideal, but it would bring back the competitive integrity of the ladder by showing which ladder you do better in. Hell, even possibly give slightly different season rewards for each one, giving incentive to get a high rank in both, which a truly good player will do no problem.

From what I've seen, most complaints about dynamic are stemming from the fact that various players have been getting paired with or pitted against 4-man parties.

Keep role selection before going into a game. Limit max party members to 2 or 3. Make a separate queue for 5 man parties (A.K.A. Ranked Teams). If you want to play with 4 of your friends, go play normal draft. I saw somewhere that you suggested a checkbox that would enable/disable solo players from queueing up with 4-man parties. The issue with this is that if the checkbox is automatically set to enabled, it may lead to confusion and, overall, would be an annoyance to solo players. The issue if the checkbox is automatically set to disabled, solo queue players would most likely click it if they want to get into a game fast and don't mind being the odd one out. Either way, I believe an option for solo players to queue up with a 4-man party would drastically increase wait times for the party.

Another issue I've seen is the drastic difference in divisions. A simple way to fix this is to only allow players within a certain range of the party leader's division to be able to join the party. This will keep both team's average MMR fairly the same.

Edit: Ranked is a place for competitive and fair gameplay. If you want to have fun with friends and tip the scales in whatever place, you can do that perfectly fine in normals.

Make it so bronze isn't playing vs gold every game, and remove 4 man ques.

I have a few suggestions, some which have been already suggested and maybe a few that haven't:

  1. Bring back the mmr disadvantage premades have when they are against smaller premades and solos as this was removed to promote dynamic queue.
  2. Show who is premade, at least place it in the api, possibly show in champ loading screen, maybe but least likely show it in champ select.
  3. People who exclusively play with premades, show what percentage of ranked games they do so on their profile.
  4. Disallow 4-man premades. As every time they queue they require a solo to fill in.
  5. Since solos are pretty much required to fill dynamic queues yet the majority of solo queue players don't want to be, give solo players perks instead of dynamic queue players. Maybe icons, extra chests/keys where chances of drop are dramatically improved when facing unbalanced teams.
