%Max Health True Damage
You can't even say that without laughing
You can't even say that without laughing
Except I can, have, and probably will in the future as well. % Max HP true damage exists in one und only vun instance, on a specific champion that has her kit designed around that effect. She has average attack speed, both base and per-level, she doesn't have an attack speed steroid at all (which is very uncommon for Marksmen), and among Marksmen, she has the shortest engagement range--that is, her zone of control is smaller than other Marksmen, because she doesn't have any long-ranged spells, just her Tumble.
Not to mention that in order to apply said % Max HP True damage, she needs to apply 3 hits in a row to the same target, which means a randuins/frozen heart affect her damage output pretty signficantly. Armor and health are still effective against her as well, just somewhat less.
Also important to note is that it's actually one of the weaker %HP effects as far as DPS is concerned. The ones that have to deal with Armor and MR reducing their effectiveness have higher damage, and they have scaling factors that Silver Bolts does not. The only one I can name that is explicitly weaker is Shyvana's E (which is also a rare %HP effect that doesn't scale otherwise), and then Vi's W is close due to lacking base damage, but the scaling on it can easily push her ahead.
Her kit itself scales well with attack speed however. She gets a pretty good AD steroid on her ult, as well as movespeed for chasing, which gives her an effective boost in AS against fleeing targets. Her Q also functions as an auto attack reset, helping her to circumvent AS slows. Her kit may not provide a lot of AS up front, but it damn sure rewards building a shit ton of it early. There's a reason that her highest win rate first 2 items are Bork into PD.
On tankier champs, I can also say that I routinely see silver bolts as the highest damage contributor, even on a small amount of built armor. And yeah, vayne isn't going to deal massive physical damage with bork and a PD. It's stupid that that's her best build path, and I think it really indicates just how strong silver bolts is.
Lets assume we have a mid game level 13 vayne. She has a bork, a PD, and zerkers. She has 141 AD, 1.763 AS, 35% crit chance, and 6% armor pen. This is based on standard ADC runes/masteries.
A few examples (taking into account autos, tumble, bork, and silver bolts) (no ult. This would add 50 ad at her current level, resulting in a 35% physical damage increase.): the ADC: 1400hp, 70ar dps: 370 (269 phys, 101 true) 27% true, 3.8s kill time
2 item tank: 2700hp, 150ar dps: 376 (214 phys, 162 true) 43% true, 7.2s kill time (331dps, 8.2s kill time (41% true) with randuins or FH)
3 item tank: 3100hp, 180ar dps: 381 (200 phys, 181 true) 47% true, 8.1s kill time (296dps, 10.5s kill time (44% true) with randuins and FH)
Keep in mind, these are approximate. It's hard to account for vayne's dps output additions from tumble procs, so I did the best I could. As you can see, while building tankier does help, vayne's kill time is still fairly short. While most physical damage champs could expect to see their phyiscal output cut, as vayne does, the true damage just keeps getting better. The tankier I get, the larger portion of her damage output silver bolts makes up.
I feel safe in saying that silver bolts is a crutch for Vayne's mid game.
I read the whole thing, but I just wanted to touch on this point.

Silver bolts put alone on a pedestal looks strong. It allows Vayne to scale as an anti-tank.
The fact is that, in a tank meta, Vayne will build more AS, because she's going to want to be anti-tank. That only works in the tank meta, otherwise it's lower DPS.
Also, in those calculations, does that take into account the physical DPS bonus from BotRK? It's wonky-as-hell math, and definitely a pain to track, but dealing ~20% current HP every 3 basic attacks, even after Armor, is going to be a significant factor as well.
Bork deals 8% current hp damage per hit. I took an average of 4% max health, though in reality, it's likely higher due to how the calculation is likely handled. I believe that when damage is calculated, you current health is sent to each damage source to be processed. Every bit of damage calculates based on the current health before you took the damage, so it's a bit biased towards the damage dealer.
To answer your question though, I did take bork into account, though not its active or condemn, nor did I account for condemn's silver bolt proc, since those aren't necessarily going to be used.
Another note is that Vayne's ult is a giant damage source against squishy targets. Consider it a 35% increase in damage from her autos and tumble. Here's the calculations with vayne's ult active
the ADC: 1400hp, 70ar dps: 370->450 (269->349 phys, 101 true) 27->22% true, 3.8->3.1s kill time
2 item tank: 2700hp, 150ar dps: 376->431 (214->269 phys, 162 true) 43->37% true, 7.2->6.2s kill time (331->379dps, 8.2->7.1s kill time (41->36% true) with randuins or FH)
3 item tank: 3100hp, 180ar dps: 381->430 (200->249 phys, 181 true) 47->42% true, 7.7->7.2s kill time (296->332dps, 10.5->9.3s kill time (44->39% true) with randuins and FH)
As you can probably guess, the flat damage from her ult is pretty crazy in terms of what it enables her to do to squishies.
And, it appears that I fucked up. I multiplied the bork passive damage by the crit multiplier, so her physical damage should be slightly lower than that across the board. The correct numbers are about 13-17 dps lower.
A few examples (taking into account autos, tumble, bork, and silver bolts) (no ult. This would add 50 ad at her current level, resulting in a 35% physical damage increase.): the ADC: 1400hp, 70ar dps: 370 (269 phys, 101 true) 27% true, 3.8s kill time
I did my own calculations to check and I got 73% physical, and only 27% True damage as well. Kill time was 4.23 seconds though.
Jinx with the same items would kill them in a little more* than 4.43 seconds in mini gun form, and the build isn't even optimal for her.
*I did not account for the lower attack speed during wind-up.
That would be a pain in the ass to account for. I would figure max attack speed in most cases, anyway. Regardless, jinx's kit greatly favors early AD over AS, since she doesn't get flat on hit damage like vayne does, but rather, giant attack speed for free.
Indeed, the reason I chose jinx was because she is also a hyper carry and auto attack damage should be somewhat comparable. Also, I chose the same items to keep the gold value the same.
Moral of the story, Vayne and Jinx have similar total damage against this target, so it doesn't really matter how much is true damage. Against squishy targets Jinx will be better, and against tanky targets Vayne will be better. The trade-off seems completely reasonable to me.
Jinx is also easier to lock down and burst.

On-hit effects do not proc Crit, and never have.
Otherwise, BotRK would have 100% replaced Bloodthirster by now.
The attack that procs Silver Bolts can crit, but that's the physical damage.
The true damage of silver bolts cannot critically strike. The autoattack applying it can, but that doesn't affect the on-hit effect.
Thanks Obama

vayne has the highest attack speed of any champion at level 18, at 1.1 http://i.gyazo.com/ae78d3a3d046e25850d54e1e8cca63ab.png
on paper her true damage is ridiculous, but it's really not as bad as they say. the real reason vayne is nuts is her freaking q during ult
Her entire kit is designed around making her a great all-in champ and tank buster. She has a mediocre escape, zero poke, and very short range, and a fairly bad laning phase. People love to focus on the aspect of her kit that makes that setup feasible and they always ignore her very clear weaknesses you and a lot of other people point out.
Just wanted to clarify that... Her range is average, not low. (550, which is the same as most adcs)
However, all the other ADCs with equal or lower range either have a range steroid (Kog'Maw) or poke that reaches beyond their autoattack range. Thus Vayne has the smallest zone of influence; she can only damage targets at 550 range or closer.
Her attack range is average.
Her threat range is lower than average.
Threat range includes things like gap closers and spells, and considering that her only direct attack spell matches her attack range, the only bonus to her threat range is Tumble. Vayne is either going all-in and attacking you, or not and not.
yet i see her demolish people game after game with the supposedly weak kit. mention no AS steriod and ignore the free 7 longswords she gets on ult which allows her to itemize AS while still doing crazy damage per hit and damage over time.
her build path is so smooth she belongs on a keystone add
yet i see her demolish people game after game with the supposedly weak kit.
Has anyone here said that Vayne's kit is weak, or are you trying to pull implications from the Æther?
mention no AS steroid and ignore the free 7 longswords she gets on ult which allows her to itemize AS while still doing crazy damage per hit and damage over time.
Marksmen tend to have offensive steroids. There's a difference between having a solid AS steroid and having a solid AD steroid on a Marksman. The difference between landing +50 more damage per 8 attacks and landing +15 more attacks is the difference between Vayne having a solid steroid and Vayne having a ridiculous steroid.

Completely agree. It's not like she's rediculously broken right now either. The funny thing is, she should be broken in this current meta, but Jinx is just so much better as a hypercarry and just an ADC in general when she should probably be falling somewhere in the middle.
That being said, why are we complaining about one aspect of a champions kit that makes them unique and individual when she's not even that great of a marksman (markswoman?) right now?
"%Max Health True Damage" http://24.media.tumblr.com/09c78ab6d39ca12c344d185f370710dd/tumblr_mx3r72ouy81sm30sso1_400.gif Does it look like i'm laughing?
But you're Laughing Fish...
I'll armour to protect me... Oh wait it's true damage. I'll build health to... Wait no, it's based off max health. I'll build no health and no armour then! Wait she still has 400ad...
I'll just afk.
Or or or or or
I could build
to lower her atk speed to lessen the proc, which btw most of her damage is still physical
I could
and reveal her during her ult and proceed to hard engage her because she have super short range?
The more of the boards I read, the more it sounds like all everyone wants to do is complain. It's a cavalcade of complaints.
Yes, Vayne has % max hp true damage... after 3 hits, and her entire kit is balanced around that non-personal-scaling on-hit effect. So, what's your point exactly? It's not even the highest damage of the on-hit effects, with Kog'Maw's doing 6% magic damage, minimum, and can scale with AP in case you fiddle with Nashor's Tooth in an AP build. Hell, Corki does 10% of his AD straight-up every single auto attack. But no, I guess Vayne is the one on the chopping block despite not crowding anyone out because she's a solid pick right now since she can tear through tanks, because that's kind of her job?
She's strong right now because her environment lets her be strong, don't nerf her because she's in her element and not even forcing anyone out because she's so godly or anything. That'd be ignorant.
Welcome to the boards, where the complaints are made up, and your opinion doesn't matter.
Whose Whine is it Anyway?
Just reminds me of when I made this for the old forums. Ah, nostalgia.
Well it's a good thing it's only on one adc who's balanced around it, who doesn't crowd out other adc's or has overbearing stats, pick and win rates!
Ok, already been said before, but here goes again. Stating what's in someone's kit is not a good indicator of who's OP or not. Here, I'll give you a fantastic example.
So there's this champion, who's got a passive that deals magic damage over time and a permaslow, a spell that launches a ranged attack that benefits from melee items and procs on hit effects with 100% AD scaling AND can crit, A FREAKING CLEANSE AND HUGE ASS HEAL, leveled attack damage and % movement speed scaling that can be more than doubled on him on cast and given half the bonus to his allies in a huge AOE range, and to top it off, has a global AOE ultimate that does up to 2000 magic damage at level 3 with a slow on top of it.
If you haven't figured it out already, that champ is Gangplank, who has been dumpstered so hard, he is outscaled by having your champ reach level 2, and buying cloth armor and 5 health pots. He drifts in and out of being playable in ways that are extremely hard to predict, but even then 95% of top laners do his job better.
So simply stating something in a champ's kit isn't a good indicator of whether or not they're OP. Honestly, Vayne's %max health true damage isn't even the most toxic thing I find in her kit.
why not make
into a tank killer with his E? im sure he would be willing to trade 250 for a scaling %.
gameplay and balance isnt an extension of gd
keep your low quality shitposting over there
It's all in
.
% max hp true damage always has been and always will be incredibly poor game design
Vayne is ridiculous. She can all-in your ADC no matter what at lvl 6 unless your ADC has a HUGE lead already. Late game she's terrifying for any non-mobile bruiser that's not ridiculiusly far ahead. The only way to beat her late game is
,
or
otherwise she can pentakill your whole team while taking zero damage.
O Really?

Late Game Draven will kill Vayne before she even has time to condemn
Draven has to build damage to get damage, is immobile, and short ranged. Meanwhile Vayne has ridiculous base damage can build Randuins to counter Draven and still have huge damage from ult, silver bolts and tumble; can Draven do the same?
There's no way Draven can beat
because he can't burst her with Randuins and BT shield, she outsustains him, while also being way tankier and way more slippery.
Vayne with that build will crit for at most 500 + (on average 80 dmg from BoRK) with 1.9 attack speed. That means with her LW she'll be dealing 440 damage to Draven assuming he has absolutely 0 armor items IF she crits. Meanwhile Draven life steals between 100-200 per auto post-armor off Vayne from his auto-attacks, so basically she would need like 4-6 crits IN A ROW to actually kill Draven, even with her 'super OP 200 true damage' silver rings.
Meanwhile Draven with a proper build will be at around 350 AD and will crit for 1.5k damage with 35% armor shred, which means almost 1k per auto-attack on Vayne post-resistances.
Are really complaining about Vayne when Jinx is a champion that exists?
And yet vayne is barely played in competitive play or high level play.
Then u realize
has a 12% max hp nuke at level 1, which procs off instantly as opposed to requiring 3 auto attacks in a row.
I hate Kalista, but you're wrong in this specification.
Requires two auto attacks from different people (which means it needs good teamwork to be effective late game,) magic damage.
I did always find Silver Bolts quite absurd.
How do you counter True Damage? Build HP. How do you counter % Max HP Damage? Build Armor. How do you counter % Max HP True Damage? ...
Armor is useless vs. True Damage, and building HP trying to counteract a % Max HP ability is illogical.
Literally the only thing you can do is stack Attack Speed Debuffs and hope for the best.
At mid-late game against a tank with 2500 health and 150 armor silver bolts do about 20% of Vayne's total damage. So 80% of her damage is still countered by armor and health.
She is also supposed to counter tanks, it is what makes her unique. She has no poke and limited peel ability so she needs to kite and attack whoever is in range, which is often a tank. Having the ability to kill tanks relatively quickly is the only thing that makes her viable. If you take that away and add a standard flat AD steroid, it would have to be so high to allow her to compete again that all squishies would hate her while tanks would still laugh at her.
Meanwhile every other AD Carry in the game has 100% of their damage partially negated by Armor.
Or Riot could make it Physical damage so that Vayne actually has to get a LW to be able to shred tanks (sound familiar?).
So Vayne is different than other adcs. Is that a problem?
