Do you mute them in game, attempt to ignore them although that just infuriates you more, or do you defend yourself? From the reports I have read from other players all of the above gets YOU banned. So what exactly is the correct protocol? What would a Riot employee do?

Ok good to know. I heard somewhere that corresponds with not working with the team, and gets you reported. I'll do that from now on.
Dr Clueless PhD1 votesThere is a report for refusing to communicate. However, Riot has confirmed again and again that muting teammates isn't going to get you punished for it.

Muting and reporting is the best option.
There isn't much you can do if the troll ends up making your team lose the game. It's rather frustrating that there's no way of stopping that, but it's pretty much become a part of the game. All you can do is report and hope that it gets them banned or restricted in some way so no one else will have to deal with them.
