Why Aphelios is Frustrating and Problematic, To Me.

I noticed a lot of people don't like Aphelios but don't exactly say why, whether they just can't or not is not up to me to figure out though but i definitely know why he frustrates me and that's why i'm making this.

Learning Aphelios: Aphelios has numerous abilities and combinations of those abilities, along with a lot of hard to keep track of Passive Effects(Lifesteal on his Pistol, Slow's on his Cannon ect.). This is hard because under normal circumstances with most champions you can, if you have trouble with them, look at their abilities yourself and understand what they do/what you should be doing against them. This doesn't work with Aphelios, they said you have to devote yourself to the champion to PLAY him but you have to have quite a bit to play against him as well, i don't like homework in my game's.

Auto's and Abilities: Aphelios can, at the beginning of the game with just Auto Attacks from his RIfle, half health you from Caitlynn's range(caitlynn can't do this by the way). This is not fun, and it's not the only example of what he can do if he simply auto's you, this is where i think a large problem of his comes from. The majority of Aphelios's damage doesn't come from his Abilities and their interactions with eachother. It comes from his Auto Attacks and from my own experiences he doesn't really need them to deal the damage he wants unless he doesn't have his Rifle, Flamethrower or Pistol, if he has any one of those 3 weapon's his auto attacks are dealing most of his damage.

Then we look at his abilities and realize, Wait? Where are the skillshots? To get into it a bit his Rifle's Q is the only true skillshot he has aside from his Ultimate. All of his other Abilities are Targeted or like with his Flamethrower Q, don't require very much work from the player in order to hit, just get in range, press the button and it works. For his Chakram's Q, it's a turret and it attacks champions immediately for him when they step into range while also zoning them away.

Passive's: Aphelios has a lot of them, his Flamethrower is probably some of the best Waveclear you could ever ask for as an ADC and his Cannon's Passive Slow is annoying to say the least. Then he has a lot of Life steal from his Pistol. He has Ashe's Passive, Nasus's Passive and at later levels the equivalent of a Mage's Waveclear all in one.

As you could imagine this is really annoying, it's hard enough to deal with just one of these things but Aphelios has all three of them, not all at once though you can Combine them with a bit of Clever management of your weapon swapping but still.

Difficulty: Riot's goal was to make a champion that was incredibly difficult to Learn and Play, but that same champion has barely any skillshots, high base damage, can stack a large number of powerful passive effects and also scales pretty hard. The only difficult thing i can really say about him is that his Ammunition System is annoying but learning to time the cycling of your Weapons SHOULD be a part of learning him, overall though he doesn't really require much Micro Ability from the player and most of Learning him is doing your homework and practicing.

This is why he's so frustrating, Riot wanted to make something hard but instead of going All In with the idea it seems like they were worried about making it too hard so they made Aphelios an Auto Attack focused ADC with a large number of Targeted and Passive Effects. Targeted Abilities and Hidden or Hard To Keep Up With passive effects have slowly been being removed from the game for a reason.

at least you have an actual substantiated reason behind your aphelios woes. and I'll agree that unseen power is something that should be removed from the game, but I'm also willing to let champions break rules to deliver on concepts.

still though, well done on having real design based reasons.

My biggest problem with Aphelios is the huge burden of knowledge he puts on players. Not just on the one playing him, but on everyone.

To properly play against an enemy champion, you need to know the basics of their kit so you can properly react and know what the enemy champion is capable of doing. Aphelios just has so much stuff going on... granted, not everything at the same time. But to properly play against him you still need to know all the effects and recognise the associated indicator for them on the fly.

The burden of knowledge is so big from this guy, they had to make a really long article to educate players about his kit...
