Zhony'as hourglass is supposed to counter asassins, so I decided to buy it for the first time in literal years.

I bougth .

I felt behind automatically, the enemy Talon had a powerspike anyway, he got fed and started killing me anyway minutes later.

When I finished Zhonya, it was absolutely useless at that point.

I have to try it, but now I'm more convinced than before: is a noobtrap, doesn't counter anything rigth now, and buying it is throwing the game.

Riot should seriously buff it to its previous state of 120 AP, or even better, remove it and allow mages to have proper defensive ítems instead of this stupidity of "mages don't need more defensive ítems because Zhony'as active is overpowered" (blatant lie).

It is definitely a noob trap on immobile mages. You are better off buying HP ( item 3116 or get the shield from item 3048 and its AP scaling. From my experience item 3157 is only good when you can follow up with a dash or something to actually escape rather than being a sitting duck. That is why it is a great item on Kaisa Fizz Akali Ekko Kassadin for example but not on Syndra Malzahar Xerath Veigar

Basically this, I pretty much never build Zhonya's on Veigar. Most of the time I go Dead Man's Plate instead

Mages outscale assassins. You shouldn't beat Talon early just because you bought Seeker's Armguard.

Also, statistically, mages are in no place of needing a buff.

It's good on Morgana Kennen Fiddlesticks etc. or against Zed otherwise it's a really bad item because the armor it gives is pointless.

How would it be pointless against Zed? Hourglass + any mage item with HP is the key to outscaling.

Zhonyas does have its place in certain comps. Assuming you don't want to be entirely a glass cannon, and want some armor against a heavy AD opponent, then it works as a mage laner or a mage/enchanter support. It also helps if you are a diving or initiating type mage champion, such as Fiddlesticks or Morgana. It does have some use.
