Not banning should incur the AFK dodge

Not choosing a ban on time should incur the AFK dodge penalty. I just had our first pick pick their champ at literally the last second before getting AFK booted and troll us out of champ select to avoid getting penalized.

I suppose there is strategic value in being able to open up the banned champ pool. However, i have never seen it being used and it would really only matter in team 5s anyway, where players cooperate.

This is a bad idea, for the mere fact that you can legitimately not ban anyone as a strategy. Downvoted, think through it more and maybe i would change that.

I don't disagree with you, nor do I agree with OP, but I still upvoted because I like the discussion, and think it should stand out more. Your choice, of course, but enough downvotes for folks who would rather a slight variation, and the discussion dies, hence the .gif images overloading the boards. There's generally no disagreeing with ideas as universal as they hit, but without an image, no one would care.

I'm upvoting for discussion.

Don't see how afking is a strategy. In my countless games I've never seen this "strategy" either. Only time I see people not banning is either due to a client glitch, or simply being afk.

If for what ever reason you don't want to ban, just ban something other than the popular bans. Problem solved.

In solo queue: The only thing you ban is your counters, if you have no counters, you dont ban.

If a champion has no counters, it has no counter-play (otherwise some part of someone's kit would qualify them as a counter), and at least purple team should ban it.

Also, if this is somehow strategic, as you claim, you should be able to point to at least one pro game where they failed to ban a champion, right? I haven't seen even one such game.

As was said above, AFKing during champ select isn't a strategy.

"If a champion has no counters, it has no counter-play" Thats just straight up wrong. counters do not counter you because of play they counter you because of their kit. eg. Kassadin counters literally every magic damage mid not because he plays better, but because he simply takes 15% less damage, thats what a counter is another example: MasterYi counters Teemo just cuz he dodges your bliind and deals strictly more damage. "Also, if this is somehow strategic, as you claim, you should be able to point to at least one pro game where they failed to ban a champion, right?" Umm... firstly teams is a completely different game than soloqueue, there is no teamwork, there is no communication, there is no team synergy. we are also not even talking about teams... What do you ban in ranked? What you think is op.

If a champion has an ability that counters someone, using that ability is counter-play. If no counters exist, then no such abilities exist on any champion, or some champion would be considered a counter. You can't have counter-play without the means, just as you cannot see a stealthed Shaco without a reveal.

You indicated before that you believed there was some strategic reason for not banning people, but you haven't identified any such thing. It simply doesn't matter if your average solo queue teammate might be an idiot, if there are no sensible reasons for skipping the ban phase, it should be treated as an AFK when you say nothing and ban no one, just as failing to select a champion is, because it will only actually happen to AFKers, given that there are no good reasons to skip.

It used to (stupidly) give you a random champion when you picked no one, after all. That only resulted in more people playing with AFKers and wasting 20 minutes.

"If a champion has an ability that counters someone, using that ability is counter-play." Not necessarily. The Kassadin example proves that wrong.

"You indicated before that you believed there was some strategic reason for not banning " No matter what champion i am playing i cannot be countered. I may have a rough laning phase but there are no counters. It's all about who the better player is.

I announce that if my teammates don't shout bans, I won't ban. I don't feel like screwing over my own teammates in soloqueue and becoming "that guy" who picked the wrong bans or banned a teammate's main or something.

In all honesty, I don't see why banning is a part of the game. I am fighting to assert my dominance over another team. It feels like it cheapens the victory to win by saying "I totally dominated you because you didn't pick that guy". Also, the strategy behind picks tends to be heavier on the captain, so it's a matter of "will he carry me, or not?" I don't dig it. It drains the team aspect of the game on several levels, in my opinion, and also adds potentially toxic interactions.

What's he supposed to do, ban random things?

Terchio1 votes

It sets my teammates in the position to make the same decision I was supposed to, instead of relying purely on my self-centered method. Aside from that, it's hardly troll to explain to teammates why you're banning the way you are. In fact, I'm not entirely sure where trolling fits into the picture... trolling is usually a reply with a lack of point, ranging in at around 4 words.

Agreed, at least in Ranked. It'll show you aren't prepared for the match or are trying to do something screwy.

I'd love to see something done about that one guy who bans three champions that counters their main, completely ignoring their team's advice, autolocks, and then proceeds to feed and blame the jungler.

But I know it won't happen. But I can dream.

No. It's very rare that someone doesn't ban and if they don't, most of the time it won't affect the outcome of champ select.
