Taking Double Edge Sword when you plan to be a tank late game?
I've realized in picking up J4 top a little more recently, that I like to play him as a lane bully early (because that's what he's good at) and transition him in to a tank late game.
I haven't really worked out a good build on him yet. I liked rushing Ravenous Hydra in to tank. I liked sitting on Tiamat, getting some health, building Titanic hydra and black cleaver in to tank. Etc...
One thing in common with my builds though, is I typically rush damage (e.g. Pickaxe in to tiamat, or phage in to black cleaver, etc...) and try to win trades in lane hard and get a few kills off of my lane opponent. This has worked really well for me, in the few games of J4 top I've played (despite top previously being my worst role and I know none of the matchups well) I typically go something like 2-0 in lane. Late game, since I'm the top laner, I go tank: Banshee's Veil, Dead man's plate, Randuin's omen, mercury treads, etc...
So anyways, finally getting to the point: I've done well taking offensive (21/9/0) masteries. I haven't taken double-edged sword. After my game today I decided to look up what masteries to take and nearly every J4 guide I looked at has double edged sword. It makes sense early game, 2% extra damage dealt for only 1% more taken, it will definitely help me get more kills in lane. I'm worried about late game though. I'm jumping in with my ultimate 1 v (3-5) and getting focused. Can I afford to be taking 1% extra damage?
Ultimately, is it worth taking double-edged sword when I'm planning to be the main tank on my team? Or should I just stick to the offensive masteries I have been using without it?
