Can Sivir's spellshield not block Yi's Q?

Electro522··19 votes·11,244 views

Genuine question.

Just played a game as Sivir against a Yi, and everytime I would try to spellshield his Q, it seemed as if my spellshield would never go off.

If it does, when should I use the spellshield to effectively block the damage? If not.....well, thanks for the info.

But yet Jax e does not dodge it

MrFawknSunshine1 votes

most likely due to being "untargetable" during his Q

Ætheist9 votes

Yi's Q doesn't apply on-hit effects, though. It can just critically strike for bonus damage.

As for spell shields, you have to shield when Yi reappears, I think. Alpha Strike doesn't actually do damage until Yi reappears.

It doesn't.

It mostly wouldn't work with Rageblade anyway even if it did apply on-hits because Rageblade's counter and phantom hit are both on-attack effects, not on-hit effects.

on attack / on hit

are different?

seems the same to me

On-attack means the effect is applied when you perform a basic attack (when you right-click an enemy). Rageblade gains stacks on-attack, meaning that Runaan's Hurricane bolts and abilities that apply on-hits won't stack it because they weren't basic attacks you performed.

On-hit means when you hit an enemy with a basic attack, or an ability that applies on-hit effects.

The way I can understand it easilly is on attack procs when a basic attack is performed, whereas on hit is applied when the attack lands. Which is why Jax can dodge on hit damage, but cannot stop rageblade from stacking.

NO. It applies his passive AA being a quadra instead of a double AA. Alpha strike does not count as an AA spell hence why it does not apply guinsoo's rage.

Yi's Q isnt a spell . its an empowered auto attack

therefore its not blocked

Actually, I'm guessing it is coded that way, looking at it. It can crit, and applies on-hit effects, so it may just be riding on the auto-attack code.

It crits, but it doesn't apply on-hit effects. I just tested in Training Mode with Blade of the Ruined King. The on-hit passive did not apply to Q targets, and neither did Wuju Style's true damage. Only Wuju Style's passive AD bonus applies to Alpha Strike's scaling, which is not an on-hit bonus. This is why Yi players don't activate E before Q if they're Q initiating, only if they're AA initiating.

Ah -- you're technically correct. The specific functionality is that he automatically queues up an auto-attack on the primary target. That's where I was mixing things up.

It absolutely does apply on hit effects to the first target only. If you're not sure, load up practice tool, give yourself lvl 18, and a sheen or botrk. Then Q 2 dummies in a row. Botrk gets applied to the first target hit, and sheen is consumed on the first target hit.

Excellent! Then I'm not completely insane -- just exactly as insane as I had assumed.

Sivir spellshield will block Hecarim E though.... pretty sure?

Electro5221 votes

That it can. I've blocked it several times.

I've also blocked Leona Q, Nasus Q, and Ekko E.

So..... I think I agree with everyone else here. Yi Q is not an empowered auto.

Electro5224 votes

It can block a Nasus Q though. It doesn't block the actual auto attack portion of it, but it does block the buffed portion of it.

So, if Yi's Q is an empowered auto, I should block the buffed auto, but not the auto itself. Unless, it just applies his auto to all targets it hits, thus, it's not technically dealing damage itself?

That is his passive you dork, meanwhile his E makes his next set of AA's deal bonus true damage.

Yes because you have NO idea what aou aren't talking about. Neither do you know what his P Q W E R do. His Q, Alpha Strike is a 4 target damage spell that gives him untargetability when casted. How on eaeth is that AA related? The only AA empowering abilities he has are double strike from passive and his E which gives him bonus true damage on auto attacks. Then you ask yourself why you were not only called a dork but also a snowflake...

F034 votes

you have to wait for yi's Q to nearly finish before spell shielding it. kind of like zed ult its a timing thing if you instantly Q it won't work because his Q does not apply the damage instantly

ez mental boom4 votes

You probably used it early. Yi Q does not apply damage (and therefore cannot be blocked) until after he has bounced to every target.

SwiftKitten882 votes

it pisses me off that Morgana W (pool) wont proc her spellshield

meaning the only two abilties i have that can proc it as morg are my ulti... and my Q.

neither of which i can waste on a spellshield.

i dont have an issue with her spellshield blocking my Q or my ulti.. that makes sense..

just feel if silver pre-casts it too early.. i should be able to kill it with my W if she steps in it

PSA if your having trouble vs morg.. go Sivir or any ap champ can build item 3102

any AD champs can builditem 3814 ( if you can kill morg in the 7 second u have with your spellsheld something is wrong with you)

idk why i never see people building properly

or u can build item 3140

literally tons of options.. but people noadays never freaking change their build for their situation

Elite4Runner2 votes

The LolWiki page for Spell Shield says it pretty clearly

If the ability is of an enhanced basic attack the spell shield will not block the damage of it, but only any additional effect it might have, like crowd control.

Vlada Cut2 votes

What's the point...Yi still deletes sivir with one AA, that is compound of his passive AA being double AA, then being multiplied by 2 AA's again by item 3124 ~ ... [zombie-brand-mindblown] Still...it's weird how Spellshield doesn't block his Alpha Strike.

Carnicore1 votes

It does block Alpha Strike, it's just that Master Yi immediately auto attacks afterward. That's why it feels like Alpha Strike is damaging you.

Khristophoros1 votes

I just tested vs a Yi bot. The only timing I can get to work is if I cast spell shield before he casts Alpha Strike.

I believe this is because Alpha Strike is basically a debuff applied to you at the moment Yi casts it, then the damage is dealt when the debuff ends. The damage itself isn't what triggers spell shields. Only the initial application of the "debuff" from him casting it triggers spell shields.

Electro5221 votes

I can see this being the case. There are other "multi-stage" spells that can only be blocked at the start of the spell, not after. Best example is Zed's ult. You have to spellshield the initial mark, you can't spellshield the mark exploding.

Another one is Evelynn's W. In order to avoid the charm all together, you have to spellshield the application of the charm itself (which is practically impossible, due to it being an instant point and click from miles away, and she's invisible). You can block her E or her first Q when you have the charm on you, but doing so won't consume the charm debuff. Thus, if she throws out another spell, or another Q, that spell will consume the charm debuff, and charm you.

Leto GT1 votes

I guess your shield went down before the damage proc

FNC 6ixGOD1 votes

I've had issues with this problem a long time. I play both Kayn and Master Yi in the jungle and whenever I was playing against a Sivir or even a Nocturne as Kayn, I couldn't ult both champions when the spellshield is up. My ult would go on cooldown, my champion would not consume the enemy champion that is using the spellshield and no damage would be delt. Now when im playing Yi and i Q onto a Sivir or Nocturne with their spell shield activated, the damage is delt, the dash is completed and the spell shield would remain, which I think is pretty unfair to the player using the spell shield.

crispy661 votes

you were more than likely timing your spell shield wrong, spell shield does block alpha strike
