Alternate ways to buff Sona

As of now, it's pretty much confirmed that Riot hates Sona's early game poke + bonus damage power chord, and as much as I dislike the nerfs they slapped on her, I don't think they'll be returning Sona to her pre-5.1 status.

So rather than vying to return Sona's Q-power, I have some ideas for buffing her in other ways.

1. Song of Celerity (Sona's speed boosting E) Current ability: 65 mana, 3 second (+0.5s per ally tagged) decaying AOE movespeed boost (1.5s for allies)

Current issues:

  1. Little use in-lane other than charging Power Chord and dodging skillshots
  2. Gives too little movespeed to actually help dodge skillshots
  3. Costs almost way too much mana even if it actually does help you dodge skillshots tl;dr it's a decent team ability overall, but its next to useless during the laning phase.

Suggested changes: Mana cost: 65 all levels -> 35 / 45 / 55 / 65 / 75 Duration: 3s all levels -> 1.5 / 2 / 2.5 / 3 / 3.5 Power Chord Bonus: 40% slow for 2 seconds -> 80% slow decaying over 2 seconds (same net slow amount)

Goals: Song of Celerity is now cheap enough to be semi-spammable early on. This opens up a new option for Sona to cheaply charge up her next Power Chord in case the other two abilities are impractical to use. Sona's Power Chord bonus is also more frontloaded now, making it feel a little more immediately effective without changing its overall balance.

2. Aria of Perseverance (Sona's healing W) Current ability: 80/85/90/95/100 mana, Heal 30/50/70/90/110 (+0.5% hp per 1% hp missing), Shield 35/55/75/95/115 for 1.5s

Current issues:

  1. Both heals and shields, but doesn't do either very well
  2. Power Chord bonus is statistically powerful (20% damage reduction for 3 seconds), but lacks the immediate impact of the other two Power Chords tl;dr it feels too weak.

Suggested changes: Sona's shield strength is now 40% stronger on herself than her allies Sona's self shield duration increases by 0.25s for every ally she tags Power Chord bonus: 20% Damage reduction -> 15% damage reduction. Now blinds enemy champions for 0.5s and interrupts enemy channels.

Goals: Slightly controversial ideas here, but allow me to explain. As much as I'd like to boost her heal, Riot seems to have an aversion for champions with cheap powerful on-demand heals (Soraka expends her health, Nami needs a nearby enemy to bounce heal, and Taric is melee). So rather than buffing Sona's heal, it would be more negotiable to buff her shield to actually useful levels instead. The Power Chord change may seem a bit iffy (why would music cause blindness lol?), but the idea is to have it become a tool for Sona to trade safely with the enemy ADC now that her Q's been nerfed.

So overall tl;dr Sona Q - Trade hard Sona W - Trade safe Sona E - Trade cheap

Would be better to avoid just a numbers buff, this is a suggestion for a game play update to her passive that gives counter play and rewards risk taking

Suggestion: make her Q a skill-shot or at least a point-and-click. It's incredibly uninteractive and requires no skill, so it will always be either way too strong or way too weak.

I'm pretty sure Riot said they are not going to do that. Making everything a skill shot is not the answer.

"or at least a point-and-click" then. Everyone else can/has to at least do that to hit an enemy. Even AD carries have to right-click.

I honestly don't really want to see her Shield buffed. I don't even think that's a problem. Also Your forgetting that she is a support. You want to be more supportive, not greedy in number buffs. I also say this because I don't find much use building sona Tanky, and most of my defensive items are situational. Partially because you should not be in the thicket of the fight, and also you can easily kite the enemy. Thematicly, Large shields and safe trading is not in sona's character.

I do however like the Idea for the Power Chord buff on her E. giving her the 80% decaying slow would give you and your team an extra second to react, and will have a much more Noticeable feel.

Here's a rework:

Passive: Sona plays music after activating every one of her abilities creating an aura that affects teammates. These auras last until the next ability is used.

Q: Range 700: Deal damage in a cone blasting back enemy champions caught in it. Passive: Nearby allies gain AD equal to .07 of Sona's AP.

W: Play a melody that removes debuffs from allies. (20s CD) Passive: Nearby allies gain health regen equal to .10 of Sona's mag res.

E: Deal damage in a cone slowing enemies caught in the soundwave by 25%. Passive: Nearby allies and minions gain move speed equal to .10 of Sona's move speed.

R: Unchanged Passive: Allies have all their cooldowns reduced by 1 second.
