Why does everyone pick Annie against Zed?

any competent plat> player should be able to stomp zed with annie... all zed can do is hope to farm and not die. She's pretty mechanically simple and the stun completely dumps on any assassins who try to burst her down

Annie is one of the few champs in the game who deals with all the hyper-mobile bursty assassin champs that are out now. THAT is why. Point-and-click stun, high burst, good teamfighting, can build semi-tanky. She's the counter to all of the absurd, manaless dingbats that can dash across the entire screen, kill you and then get out. "Have you seen muh bear Tibbers?"

Because her stun just makes any attempt of trying to kill her with Zed moot.

Annie is chosen into all mobile mid laners, it's her thing. And she dominates them all. It takes special skill to be killed in lane by an assassin as Annie.

because some people aren't complete idiots and just pick champions they're good at because that is what matters.

Annie counters Zed overall, as she can stun him easily and interrupt his combo. Usually, average or above Annies will hold their stun or be close to it in case Zed attempts to all-in, and then use Q (not W or R) to stun him, and then from there she can either walk away or just kill him. Annie generally can play well against burst/assassin champions, like Ahri and Talon.
