Is Rakan a little weak? Or at least held back? (TL:DR at the bottom)

Skorch··5 votes·5,727 views

I mean yeah he has a 44% winrate and we have seen that usually people either figure them out or they get over buffed in situations like this.

But just from playing Rakan (and i have a good few games on him now) he feels... held back.

The basic idea on why Rakan is weak.

Okay so my opinions on his abilities stem from these basic ideas:

His build: All of his abilities are fairly weak on the base stat side because his scaling are good. Which WOULD make them matter if his build wasnt: item 3069 (Riot planned this as his main support item) item 2045 (which means this is mandatory, no Eye of the oasis) item 1001 (Boots are always dependant on teamcomp and what you specifically want to do with them so ill just use boots of speed.) item 3107 item 3190 (These 2 items are damn near mandatory on all supports right now.)

item 3069 item 2045 item 1001 item 3107 item 3190 So you have 1 item left. AP isnt gonna be too helpful as the scalings arent strong enough to give a valid effect late game from the 60-100AP from any item you build. So you end up going for another tank item because well what else are you gonna do? Personally i like item 3109 . But this means his scalings are pretty much useless outside early game runes.

His Base Stats: So his base damages are low to make up for unobtainable scalings, and his base stats for TANKS as that is what he basically is forced to do, Is while above pretty much all enchanters, is lower than pretty much all tanks. Meaning Early game he will be squishy and blow up instantly until 5 items in. Which is a problem since his main job is to jump into the enemy team and dash out before they kill him.

His Range: He is out-ranged by pretty much every support in the game. Enchanters + ADC = always outside your W range, you will have a hell of a time getting close without being CCd and since his base tank stats are pretty damn low. And his Q is so shortranged, slow, unable to go through minions, you will only land it by either landing your W or at least getting close to them with it. His E's range when not to Xayah is also pretty low.

Abilities

P: His passive is pretty alright, its pretty much a weaker malphite shield. I dont see the bonus of "the CD works EVEN IN COMBAT" when his main thing is dodging in and out of combat.

Q: On paper, this ability is really good, from its scalaing. In practice, it is the hardest thing to hit the opponent with. Its short range and speed means you pretty much CANT use it to poke, and FEELS like they made it as weak as possible. Low Bases that scale with champion level NOT ability level. Almost NO benefits to leveling whatsoever, at least compared to his other abilities. His Q just feels awful.

W: His W is REALLY hard to engage with, which is a problem since thats his main thing. The ability itself is pretty solid stat wise. But its range is so short most tanks have some form of CC to outrange you Braum W and i think Alistar Combo both outrange you. As well as EVERY ENCHANTER IN THE GAME has some form of CC farther range than your W. If the opponent picks a semi long range ADC like Caitlyn Varus Jhin (which also may do well against Xayah too as her range is fairly short) You will NEVER get to them. Well without a nice summoner 4 W of course. Its much more useful in teamfights, but in lane it is practically useless unless you surprise them.

AND if you dont land it, your are stuck for a solid second giving anyone with ranged CC the ability to get a free land. And if thats a Morgana or Nami , especially with Caitlyn . You are basically dead. Miss CC do to range > Bubble > Trap > W away at like 10HP do to having 0 ability to tank.

E: My only problem with my E is it feels REALLY short range on people that arent Xayah. It makes roaming much harder as you are quite in vision by the time you can E > W to the opponent.

R: His R is pretty much fine, quite strong, but also has its downsides.

Solo Lane

HE CAN NOT SOLO LANE.

His E is useless in solo, cant E to minions, cant shield himself, low enough range to make Eing to junglers to surprise an enemy not helpful as they are already in vision by the time you can. While this might make it more balanced in bot lane, it isnt helped by the fact that...

His Q delay was put in place so that you could still heal allies after hitting the skillshot, at the same time it makes trading a little harder.

His W is good in toplane as it can actually engage on people there. Same with his R

Fixes

Itemization, His scalings are currently useless so either we need to find a way to make him build AP or lower his scaling increase his base damages, and increase his tank base stats.

Make his Q actually be able to poke, or at least land. Its slow travel time AND short range make it a very hard ability to land with almost no pay off. The fact that his heal scales so slowly and doesnt have any good use. And before people say "well thats to make sustain in lane better" Most supports have a decently spammable heal that takes no more than pressing a button. If Rakan has to land a hard to hit ability in ORDER to heal, then the heal should at least be decent. That or you could also make it travel through minions like other low range slow moving abilities.

W MAKE THIS THING COMPETE WITH OTHER CC. Its low range makes it really hard to engage with. I dont know how exactly as just flat increasing the range would feel wrong. But in lane he should be able to have the ability to actually get to his opponents. And if it misses hes screwed.

MAYBE increase his range to non xayah allies on his E. Or give it some form of anything really.

If you wanna tweak his Ult/P go for it, but in my eyes they are pretty decent.

Synergy with Xayah

Ok i cant talk about Rakan without his synergy to Xayah, her W gives him some nice damage. And the E range to her is FANTASTIC, its a lifesaver out of a fight really. But this also means Rakan REALLY DOES need Xayah to be safe at all, as he cant get out of fights without it. The E range is too short to get out (well technically you can dash to frontline > dash to backline and be safe, but you die pretty damn fast.

Also Xayah comes NO WHERE NEAR being able to cover his weakness, as in my eyes his main weakness is his really short range and DIFFICULTY getting to the enemy in lane. And Xayah also has short range. As well as with Rakans current build he is currently an actives-bot until full build when he can actually do some tanking. Meaning they arent covering any weaknesses their either as they BOTH are pretty late game heavy champs.

Leftover thoughts/TLDR

Rakan on paper is pretty good, but there are SO many little problems with him that leaves him to just not be great. He gets outranged/outtanked by pretty much every bot lane. As well as his Base Stats/damages and itemization have a hard time lining up.

I like Rakan, he is still fun despite this, and actually REALLY simple. Just look at those ability descriptions compared to other champs. But I cant help that Riot held back on making Rakan good to be extracareful he wasnt broken (which may be a cry of happiness for a lot of people). And he IS a support so he probably IS weak and will be overbuffed in a patch or 2 (>.> Bard Ivern 's releases)

These were just my thought on the 10 or so games I have on him. Maybe this hour of writing was pointless and he actually is hidden OP and just not understood yet. But he doesnt look as mechanically difficult as most other low-winrate-on-release champs (Camille STILL had over 50% winrate, when she was BRAND NEW, and she is pretty damn difficult... mechanically)

Well im gonna go back to playing more Rakan. Need to get that mastery 5-7 soon.

Once people solidify his build, he's going to be broken. I guarantee it.

There's no way someone's not going to find a way to abuse the shit out of those ratios.

Ok sure but why3 votes

His range is pure garbage compared to other ranged champs, his shield only helps others even though he has to jump in front of the ally to proc it, and all his abilities can be easily avoided

He is fairly strong, but difficult I'd say.

There still isn't enough conclusive data.

Skorch1 votes

I sort of agree i guess. He looks and sounds strong. But is just so god damn useless in lane. In lane he is a 100 health shield bot.

And yeah he is new. But also looking at similar trends and champions. He is basically the same release as Bard and Ivern.

Although i just realized something horrifying: If everyone is playing Rakan and Xayah TOGETHER and his winrate is 44%(early winrate) what will it be if he isnt with Xayah, which will probably have a lower winrate in itself?

He's a utility champ. Bard engage is his Q. Thresh engage is Q-E back into ADC. Ivern engage is his W.

Their protections are Bard can peel with Q, heal with W somewhat and give a speed boost, and help escapes with E. Thresh can Q targets for the stun while ADC runs, E flay them away, or set a cage. Rakan gives a heal and shields.

I figure they'll go up a bit after a few weeks. Give people time to learn them and actually become better at them. And people aren't necessarily playing them together. There's games where one is banned or on enemy team.

Skorch1 votes

In my opinion they are incomparable. He isnt a Utility support, he is an Engage champ, with a lot of utility, Thresh is pretty close to that, but is also higher ranged.

Rakan has a hard time engaging, as well as measly utility do to him being forced tank. The only reason his utility looks good are its scalings, but those scaling are useless since he doesnt build AP.

Dont forget at least thresh gets tanky from his base stats.

And the fact that they arent forced together means even worse things to his winrate.

He is a utility champ that happens to additionally bring engage to the table. He's a hybrid. Riot is on their unique playstyle kick and Rakan is one of many. As previously stated, he can and does get wonderfully tanky if you understand how to build him and utilize his kit properly. It's simply a learning curve at the moment.

Skorch1 votes

But all of his utility feels worse BECAUSE he is tanky. The base stats are really low to make up for the scaling he doesnt use.

Well i'm just not feeling your complaints. He feels great to me. Perhaps you're not having a team to utilize him properly. I recall pre-rework Galio suffering from that. Not that I feel Rakan is. I just think you need to give it time. Hasn't even been a week.

Have to disagree. I'm running item 2302 just fine on him. I started off with more more classic healer support pages I run on Nami, etc but switched over to my tank support build with Colossus. Feels much better. By midgame he takes a beating and keeps on dancing.

The build i've settled into which has worked great is item 2302 item 3009 item 3107 item 3190 item 3512 item 3083

A tank running around with that much mobility, cc, heals and shields is a dream for someone usually going AP/utility support. I love him. His fast pace playstyle keeps me on my toes and makes me work outside my comfort zone.

It's about all of us getting comfortable with him and learning matchups. I early on realized how severely Zyra counters him in lane. Both really once you know not to blow all your skills until after her ult is down. I leave him left unbanned because if the enemy takes him from me I simply introduce them to my plants. :)

And no, he is being played a great deal without Xayah. One or both are getting banned a good deal. Plus each team is snagging one often enough.

Remember, he said higher elo. You can do whatever you want in silver because none of their pc's can keep up with Rakans movements most of the time.

I'm amused you think it's a pc's specs that keep people in silver...

its a factor, if you have a shitty pc you cant do much in a game, its just one of many factors that keep players in low elo.

He doesn't build AP?

No... YOU don't build AP.

Skorch1 votes

No... HE doesn't build AP. It isnt preference.

Well to state it isnt MY preferance. You can build whatever the fuck you want on him. However what is going to be built on him and looked on him, ESPECIALLY in high elo/Pro

As i said in the post: Riot tells you, item 3069 IS GOOD. This is the gold item you want, is it required? No, but 90-95% of Rakans will probably build this item. Especially since item 3302 doesnt work and item 3303 just isnt great on Rakan, i think thats agreeable You COULD get eye, but no one builds eye to my dismay. I love the Eye items, but sadly they just arent as strong as the full counterparts.

So that means most Rakans are stuck with item 2045 Item number 2

Boots. Personally i like item 3117 for roams. But item 3047 and item 3111 work. And if you need that CDR item 3158 There isnt an AP boots Item 3

item 3107 and item 3190 ARE ALMOST MANDATORY ON SUPPORTS. Now listen, if i play for fun, i wont build these. I will build more stupid shit like item 3041 and item 3001 for the fun of it. But in serious games, these items are so efficent and powerful you are putting yourself at a disadvantage NOT building these items. Dont beleive me just look at his most built items so far. According to LeagueofGraphs AND Op.gg its item 3190, item 3069 or item 2302, and item 3107 are his most built items. I hate these items, they honestly need nerfs, its causing so many issues in the support itemization these being damn near required. The only exception i have found is on Morgana you trade item 3190 for item 3157 and if you really want you can take both and forgo your last "free item" item 3050 item 3001 item 3116 etc. That is the only champion i can think of that doesnt build both these items right now. Item 4&5 (wow that was ranty)

Doesnt leave a lot of room for AP does it? Im not saying you cant build AP Rakan, but it will be considered off meta. And, most likely until some changes, will not be what he's balanced around.

Honestly, just stop the stupid rush of Redemtion and Locket.

What you need to do with him:

Build CDR and Mana reg ASAP!

Skill E>W>Q

Get some AP in there.

Dash in, Knock up people, throw Q, get out and heal on your way out.

Sukishoo1 votes

I've played him quite a few times lately and haven't built item 3069 once. I prefer this item 2302 much more on him.

item 3107 item 3190 also aren't really mandatory in any sense. I main support and yes they are great items but it's all either preference or situational.

Remery1 votes

Really just not sure what to max first on this guy because everything has deficiencies. You can max Q but if you cant land it, due to smart enemies treating yu like a blitz and staying behind minions and safely poke/farm or due to the fact that it's shorter than Leona's E and Braum's Q. Maxing W seems sound but because his knock up has a delay ANY type of hard cc stops the knock from ever happening since the knock up procs when Rakan jumps up. So thresh (who I'm almost always seeing) is a clear hard counter to him since his flays stop his knock up from ever happening and now leaves you free for punishment. You could max E firstbut then you should have just played Janna then, atleast her knock up doesn't put her at risk.

Also making him a short range ranged champion was a pretty dumb idea, can never really poke but you are close enough to proc targon if they made him melee, meaning he could have easily use targon and use Fotm along with his W to increase his sticking power but nope coin is the only viable option. Don't get me wrong using the Talisman passive, along with mobis and pressing your ult in a teamfight makes you feel like Sonic charming the entire enemy team confusing the fuck out of them and winning every teamfight, but before you can get to that dream you have to get through the pain of laning. Even when you do have Xayah you have to max Q or W since shes has such a short range and cant defend herself from from Caitlyn, varus, and jhins who out range her or vayne and Lucian who simply beat her in 1v1s coupled with a karma, Leona, thresh or any other mage support and the couple is going to have a hard time in lane and without the help of a jgler getting behind as xayah and rakan is pretty much a death sentence.

Overall I like Rakan but he needs buffs to something:

-If they made his knock up activate the instant the circle is below you, -make his q longer and more rewarding -make his shield range longer, (w/o xayah) -simply make him a normal range or melee support and not some weird combination of both so he can have a healthier build for his kit.

I'm just going to throw out my opinion on Rakan as a main support. I understand where people are coming from when they discuss their dislike for Him and Xayah to need one another, but I disgree that the statement is true. Between the two champions I find that while Xayah has some capability, she's really a one-trick pony and once her trick is over, she's done. If she doesn't land that 8-10 feather Bladecaller, she's pretty much sub-par compared to her ADC peers.

Rakan on the other hand has extremely high mobility, good CC, massive team-saving potential and more peel than a banana-bunch. While most people seem to be fond of building the standard support items on him (coin, sightstone, redemption, etc) I find that actually building Talisman, sightstone and tank items gives him a LOT of survivability while his abilities all have relatively short cooldown anyway. He's not meant to deal damage or have high-kill potential, where he shines is keeping his teammates safe and getting in and out of combat quickly. Combining his ult with W can pretty much guarantee at least a 2-person free knockup in most situations and then run around to charm the rest while your team wipes out the poor saps who got caught. Talisman + Ult + W, then dash around and shield your carries means you've pretty much won the fight and with the tanky items, you're barely even scratched. His whole kit can be used offensively or defensively which is really what makes him so good. If I were to rate ban-worthy on scales of 1-10. I'd put Xayah at maybe a 5, and Rakan (even without xayah in game) at an easy 9.
