Why is Elixir of Wrath the only one that resets?

The Bearded Bard··66 votes·4,170 views

Title. None of the other elixirs reset. Ruin probably shouldn't reset on kills or assists, maybe on tower destruction instead, but the rest of them should reset on kill or assist like Elixir of Wrath does.

See a lot of you comparing the elixirs, ignoring the fact that Wrath might just have the best stats of the four. The 25 AD is a pretty good chunk mid game, but what's really great about it is the 10% AD vamp. That shit's insane on AD casters. You're really going to compare that to what mages get? 25 true damage with a five second cooldown. Really? I'll take 10% spellvamp over that any day. And don't even get me started on the "It's better because mages can take down towers now!" AD champs do more damage to towers at all points of the game.

It has a reset because it really has the weakest bonus effect of all the Elixers. Iron is ideal for tanks, Sorcery lets mages wreck towers, and Ruin is great for split pushers. Wrath is just a bit more healing. Nice, but nothing super special. So it gets another effect in return.

isn't it like 25 ad and 10% of any damage dealt.

idk man on adcs at least 10% lifesteal is pretty massive.

Oh don't get me wrong, its not BAD, but its certainly not on the level of the other Elixers. The rest of them provide unique buffs that really can't be obtained anywhere else. Extra Tenacity, bonus damage to towers (well, dragon buff, but other than that), and true damage for mages. But all Ruin gives is... physical lifesteal. Not exactly outstanding.

I don't think it's honestly a big deal, but wrath gives spell vamp from AD spells, something that AD champion can not get anywhere else. It's plenty strong without the reset.

AD scaling champions can still get spell vamp from revolver, gunblade, and WotA and benefit from that spell vamp, but it's not optimal to build AP when they usually scale off of AD.

Yeah, go ahead, build a fucking wota on Graves. lol Yeah, I thought so.

That moment when someone posts something redundant for the sake of arguing.

El Condor Pasa2 votes

Are you talking about my post or the reply to my post?

If you are talking about my post, what part of it is redundant? AD champions can get any of those spell vamp items and they will heal a percentage of their abilities' damage so long as it doesn't apply on-hit effects (i.e. the ability applies spell effects e.g. Grave's Buckshot). Elixir of Wrath provides something that could be thought of as spell vamp only for physical damage spells. Saying that an AD champion can't get spell vamp anywhere else is completely untrue.

YOLO420SWAGSCOPE2 votes

You're missing the point completely. Of course its POSSIBLE to get benefits out of spellvamp items as an AD Champion; it's just not PRACTICAL. You're just arguing for the sake of arguing, and that's redundant.

junglerboy161 votes

It isn't even Spellvamp strictly speaking (just heals for physical damage dealt from any source), so for someone like Sivir whose Ricochet ability doesn't proc lifesteal or spell vamp, it is actually REALLY good.

Shhhh... Don't tell Riot what makes my Talon so strong.

Champion Skin2 votes

Well... item 2138 Iron Elixir is good.... but it doesn't actually do anything unless you get hit by a lot of CC and slows and unless you are leading the charge

So if you are a tank against a low CC team you could consider item 2137 elixir of Ruin (for the HP and the buff to minions as the % damage increase against towers won't do much for a tank)

Divewing3 votes

It's actually really disgusting on things like Talon and Zed if they are only a little ahead. Thing is they usually snowball so fucking hard they back on 2k gold every time...

Rikari2 votes

Its not lifesteal. It heals on ALL physical damage. so its spellvamp on ANY physical damage. It shouldnt have its reset either way.

Graves, Zed, Pantheon and others actually get WAYYYYYYYYY more than 10% lifesteal would give them. The 10% healing is applied to all of the damage Graves does with his ult and buckshot into the whole team.

aaronconlin7 votes

Healing for 10% of all physical damage dealt is pretty far from weak.

pity the effect only works when you dmg champs.

The stat values are roughly the same between Wrath and Sorcery. Sorcery then has the 25 true damage, but then if you take into account that it isn't just 10% lifesteal, but 10% of all physical damage-- they're roughly the same value in grand total, but Wrath gets resets.

Bump. Also, instead of making the other elixirs reset on kill and assist, you could make it so Wrath is lost on death. That would appeal to a more high risk/high reward elixir, which is how I like to think of Elixir of Wrath.

Divewing2 votes

Didn't realise it didn't drop on death, it probably should. And you pretty much answered your own question, it's primarily there for snowballing (Talon gets one and goes on a serial killing, snowballing like a crazy mofo), even if no one really uses it as such.

Then it should be lost on death.

Maybe instead of lost on death it loses 30 seconds instead?

Cause Rito is racist against red things.

I feel item 2139 doesn't need reset potential because I see a lot of support champions get this. If it was like item 2140 and it could extend its time, all they'd have to do is buy this once they hit 9 and as long as the support roams, they can easily maintain it, giving them extra power they don't need. item 2137 and item 2138 give tankyness and add bulk/objective control, which is incredibly powerful.

I do think item 2140 should lose its reset power on ARAM, though. You can basically keep it up indefinitely once you hit 9 because of all the action.

slôw2 votes

It has no tower pushing buffs so putting a reset doesn't make poke comps too strong.

If it did have tower pushing buffs it would make split pushing way too effective when people transition into late game control

ABlueQuaker6 votes

It grants AD. How is that NOT a tower pushing buff?

slôw2 votes

25 AD is extremely small when you hit a tower compared to 25 true damage with sorcery or 15% bonus from ruin

ABlueQuaker7 votes

Yeah, but that true Damage is on Champions with sub-1.0 Attack Speed - not Carries with close-to-capped Attack Speed.

good point.

its really dumb how mages dont get resets but ad champs do... i dont get why, they are both offensive type champs

I am saddened that when I made a similar post to this, it was downvoted to oblivion. I am happy that this one is doing better. +1

I'm of the opinion none of them should reset. Buff Wrath's stats a bit if needed.

Jesus is Savior1 votes

The reset is pretty garbage anyway, since it can't "reset" past its max duration. So if you set up a bunch of kills 30 seconds into the elixir and get a pentakill.... Nope too bad, you're only getting 30 seconds back.

It's the sole reason I stopped buying it until I'm full build. Because trying to force kills is already risky enough.

ThePlasticSpork1 votes

I've never really thought the reset matters, anyway.

You're only really building elixirs if you're full build, so the reset is kind of moot because you're gonna always have enough gold to simply buy another one.

lasodamos2 votes

it's the point, red elixir can be buy whenever u want because of the reset....

TotalJerk1 votes

Elixirs are kinda bad lategame, which is when people go full-build, though. The only reason people even buy them lategame is because they have nothing else to spend their gold on. They are meant to be used midgame.

Mmmm not really true. Supports get the mage one early on pretty often, and I see aggressive Zeds and Talons get Wrath all the time at level 9, with the resets they can keep it for quite a long time.

Tentacle Love1 votes

Well, the one that helps on tower destruction doesn't reset because towers don't reset.

OyddAWqJ5r1 votes

item 2137 - doubled duration on structure kills; cuz you know how hard it is to make use of the super situational structure effect in 3 minutes? Pretty damn hard for how weak it (15%) is. item 2139 - increased duration on Kill or Assist (15 seconds + 1 per 3% missing mana) (Cuz #ManaTrade-offs) item 2138 - slightly increased duration (~15 seconds I guess) every time a CC effect is inflicted on the user by an enemy champion (10 second cooldown)

The Bearded Bard1 votes

Also can we stop pretending that AD champions don't hit towers harder than AP at all points of the game? Seriously, y'all are acting like it's some saving grace that AP can buy the elixir and hit towers for 25 true damage with their .8 attack speed. I'm sure Luxwith her Sorcery elixir will take out a tower faster than that 2.5 AS 300 AD Trist, no problem.
