Say you're in a 4v4 match on SR. Do you give up support or jungle? Why?

This came up recently in the Factions Bilgewater event, which was run as a 4v4. We should have VODs up soon. But before that, I wanted to get some general community comments.

Let's say you're going into a 4v4 match. Assume you knew it was 4v4 in Champion Select, rather than it being a random d/c.

How do you allocate your Champions? Do you jungle and send an ADC solo bot? Do you skip the jungle and bring a support? Do you do something else, like have a "part-time jungler" with Smite and a gold income item?

And, importantly: why?

I feel like the traditional response would be to go with a jungler. But with the new gold income items for supports, which significantly resolve the "four goldstreams, five Champions"/"support starvation" problem, it's not clear to me that a support necessarily ends up that far behind the jungler in terms of lanephase gold. (I haven't run the numbers.) And then there are the more subjective strategic questions about whether it's better to have a jungler who can gank any lane anytime, thereby exerting a sort of Panopticon-like global pressure, or to have a support who can constantly apply pressure to bot lane.

Maybe there isn't one best answer? Maybe it depends on which Champions you're taking? Maybe both approaches have ways of dealing with teams that take the other option?

Anyway. I'd like to hear what people think. 4v4s don't happen that often, but I think this question gets at some fundamental issues about gold income, map pressure, and Champion scaling that have broader applicability.

so let's see

i can either have someone babysit the adc or i can have someone actually exerting pressure across the map and getting all of the lanes ahead

i think i'll take the jungler

supports normally roam a lot anyway, so most games are like three solo lanes and double jungle post-6.

As a support main, I really don't see the problem with skipping on the jungler, so long as someone on the team has smite (like a toplane TP+Smite Cinderhulk, or a support with Smite instead of Exhaust).

People who talk about "jungler exerting pressure" forget that without an enemy jungler, there's more incentive for lanes to play aggressively and overextend during the early game, and that counts for your own team as well.

It is a 4v4. it isnt same team comp vs. same team comp. You choose to take a support, the enemy could take a jungler instead and take advantage of the free jungle.

That's pretty close to what happened in our Bilgewater game Cupcake posted about.

Our games were 4v4, and we were playing Black Market Brawlers. In game 2, one team decided to have a jungle, while the other team opted for a support. Our jungler was able to farm the enemy's jungle not only for the free exp and gold, but also for Krakens, since you gain Krakens from the enemy jungle. It was a close game, but we did end up winning (the team with the jungler). So yea, that's exactly what we did was try to take advantage of their jungle as much as possible.

Give up the support, because overall the team with the jungler will have much more experience. If you get a botlaner that can 1v2 and waveclear well, you just got so much more gold and exp. passively as a team. It's also hard to dive 2v1, it's not like the duolane has a jungler that can come to make them dive. And the jungler can put pressure where he needs. Nah, jungler in 4v4 seems way stronger.

I would give up jungler because the adc will need all the help he or she needs to get peel.

Of course give up the support, is this even a legit question?

the only reasonable thing is to give up support, as he´s the only member of the team that doesnßt work with ressources from the map other than xp...if you give up on jungling you give up on all the gold/xp you could earn in the jungle - if you give up on the support you basically just lose the extra xp from laneshare+the gold from support-items. And junglers can chip in for the warding rather well.

Do you have a number for how much gold the jungler gets from jungle farm assuming a standard clear speed and an average number of ganks? Like, is it more or less than solo lane farm?

A first step to addressing this problem analytically, I think, would be comparing support gold income with jungle income, factoring in passive gold generation for both. Is it 5k versus 6k? Or more like 4k versus 8k? And so on.

while i lack the direct statistics currently you´ll usually be ahead in gold slightly as a jungler in a "normal" game and significantly in xp compared to the support. Not to mention you assert sort of global-pressure and make sure you´re opponents jungler can´t just farm 2jungles instead of 1 to get far ahead of the curve...

While Support is an evenly important role to jungle in 5v5s you just cannot aford to lack a jungler in a 4v4 from my perspective. You´ll fall behind in map-control and global-xp fast...and you might not even come out ahead on the 2v1lane as it´s very gankable, because you will push it in 2v1 eventually and they will win the 2v2 early on due to the xp lead on both (jungle and 1v2 laner). Also bear in mind that there are champs that are rather strong 1v2ing, youßre not forced to play an adc bot - you can easily put him mid if you feel like you need one.

ADC goes mid. A good adc can farm mid just fine and mid is a safer lane than bot. Bot lane gets a high sustain tank mage like cho. Top lane gets a high sustain tank mage like maokai. Jungle gets a fighter like xin. In teamfights you have two AP tanks for peel and magic damage, a melee carry (xin) and a ranged carry. Alternately run the AD bruiser top and an AP tank jungler.

You should not lose XP to babysit the adc.

I love how this poll is literally 7/7/2 and therefore split evenly. It really says something about the state of the game and balance to me. I voted for Support but I wasn't really thinking much about it until I finished this post.

To your question, I honestly think having a Support is more important than a Jungler in most cases. Why? Because Junglers can't camp a lane early on like a Support can. I mean sure, they can try but ultimately if they do so and fail, then they have sacrificed a lot of farm and become irrelevant, and guess how well your Lone Marksman is probably doing against the Support and Marksman? You lose objective control over Baron or Dragon, but sometimes you actually get even Stronger Teamfights out of it (MasterYi verses Sona, who would you rather pair with a Graves or MissFortune?) Plus no one's mentioning how Marksman are usually pretty good at Sieging which is vital if the game drags on, especially against a Jungler that can probably get Baron and Dragon, in some cases stealing it from your team because you can't summoner 11

A lot of people are saying Jungler for Global Pressure, but think about what's happening bot lane: That gank on top or mid is a giant signal 'Hey, the Enemy Jungler is nowhere near here, All-in their ADC to force Summoners if not Death!' and few people scale as hard as something like a Vayne (though some, like Corki are only good in the mid-game and not really worth the sacrifice)

Ultimately, it depends on your ADC. If it's a Hyperscaler like Jinx or KogMaw they they need a Support and losing a Jungler isn't as important. By contrast, if it's more of an AD Caster/Duelist like a Corki or Lucian (currently) The Laner will not become as great a late-game threat nor a good tower pusher/sieger and therefore scaling other lanes becomes more important, hence when the Jungler becomes the better option.

Jungle applies pressure for the entire team. Support provides help for one team mate until mid/end game.

It isnt even a question.

By not having a jungler, not only are you giving up the map pressure, you are giving up all of the damn gold and xp sitting in the jungle, as well as the buffs, AND you give up objective control without smite (or force a laner to use smite).

Dies to Wolves1 votes

depends on the champions and matchups but a jungler would be prefereble because that's more XP for the team (even if support gold items make up for lack of CS, it still shares xp rather than tap into jungle xp) and because potential pressure in every lane. If you, as a laner, know for a fact that the enemy team doesn't have a jungler, you can play a LOT ballsier and more aggressively, there's a LOT less pressure on you, it really makes a LOT of difference. The support, even if he roams, can't make up for that, since you'll actively know when to play safer (support is mia) and when you're free (support is bot), rather than the constant threat of a jungler being nearby

IcyPepper1 votes

Honestly, I'd rather have a roaming support.

Give up global pressure to stick to the adc early game, then begin roaming once the adc has their core item and can lane safely.

macromite1 votes

you take jungler because support takes exp.

I keep the support. Someone's got to carry the team's water, and it's sure as hell not going to be assassin #4.

Zhugan1 votes

You drop the support instead of the jungler because having a jungler gives more total map pressure as well as accessing another lane to farm in. The choice isn't really that difficult.

While there is an obvious added benefit to having a adc/support lane against a lane with only an ADC in it, the simple solution is to just pick a waveclear ADC and make friends with your turret and wait for your jungler to gank. (Without any recourse to said gank because there is no enemy jungler.)

On the whole the team will get more gold than a team without a jungler. Hell, that's the whole reason that teams have a solo top instead of another support/ADC lane (which is hypothetically the next most viable choice if you were going to scrap jungler as a role completely).

TL;DR: Jungler = another lane to farm and global pressure. Support = more wards and a slightly safer ADC early. I'll take the jungler with those pros and cons any day.

SwapShadows1 votes

Easy question, drop the jungler.

If you're missing your support then you might as well be missing your ADC.

Hard4Hamsters1 votes

If you know it's going to be a 4v4 from the beginning, I would drop the support. Then I would take a strong early game tanky jungler such as Gragas, Rek'sai, maybe Nunu (not early pressure, but can take camps and counter jungle very effectively) and possibly Elise as her tank build still has enough utility in the E stun. This should give you lane pressure AND be able to peel for your carries quite effectively. I play Gragas support and it is his 2nd most successful role right now so he can act as an engage/disengage support on his own and with a more gold invested build, he can do this job even better. Next would be choosing the ADC. You would want an ADC that can stay very safe or one that is strong in a solo lane such as Ezreal, Corki, Varus, and I'll throw in Sivir, Graves, and Lucian as possibilities. You may want to put the champion mid too as it is a shorter lane and that inherently gives him more protection, not to mention it is the easiest lane to access for laners and junglers to assist him. You should maybe take one more damage dealing carry style champion and one tankier champion for the solo lanes, but I think both of them should take Teleport for both lane assistance and getting back to lane effectively. I would personally like Shen on my team as a solo laner or a jungler as he will be the best champion to get around the map effectively. Twisted Fate is another option and with Rek'sai, you can be anywhere on the map that your AD carry is. This is my thought on the matter. I think it is a little more complex than just sacrificing your Jungler or Support and you should think of a team comp that can play this lower manpower style. That's my thought. Sorry for the text wall. Peace.

Most junglers are kind of a second support champion on the team already. Giving up all of the exp that comes from the jungler and leaving one of your lanes behind by 3 levels is going to be brutal in the mid game.
