Back to asking for buffs to Sona

I have said it before and i will say it again. Sona's early game is way to weak to function with the current state of the game. Let's be honest, outside of maybe 2-3 match ups, she lacks the skills to be an asset to her team for a disturbingly long period of time. She lacks the damage to bully the lane, what little damage she does have is almost entirely tied to a 550 range auto attack follow up to her pitiful "poke". The bonus damage she offers to her allies is laughable in how little it matters. Her heal and shield have such low values and such high up times that you don't have the means to keep your ally healed up to win the long fight NOR do you have the power to push them over the top to win a head to head. Her lack of hard CC before level 6 means that you aren't securing any kills for your team by smart positioning / out thinking your opponents. But worst of all, to me at least, is the HORRIBLE choice to make her one of the slowest champions with no gap closers while also making her health pool insanely small. I get it, i really do, you don't want back line utility champions with the survival tools of a front line engage champion. You don't want a utility champion that can heal, to also have high damage output. I'm not expecting to be as tanky and sticky as a Leona or to have the raw damage output of Lux , but for fuck sakes could i not loss like 20-30% of my life at level 4 when i do a simple AA empowered trade against Bard ? Could i maybe do enough damage that i'm not required to go in half a dozen times before i see any real results? If not damage, maybe enough healing/shields that i can win either the long fight or the short against the enemy comp that has no healer/shielder.

We all know that Sona has a very strong late game, spell spamming and finally having the money to buy the items you need go a long way. That said her late game is by no means broken, and should not have to come at the cost of being a joke in the early game. I'd love to see her do more damage (and go back to being a lane bully who transitions into a power support), I'd love to see her support skills be strong enough that you don't need 2 items to buff them beyond garbage tier. But most of all, i would LOVE to see Sona be able to take a freaking hit in the early game and not suddenly be down a huge chunk of her life total.

Way to promote discussion... Everybody, take notes!

Chose one, having both isn't fair.

You're only proving his point, people think we want to be good at any point in the game, when that isn't the case.

We don't want to have a great early game anymore, we want our champion to not be completely fucking worthless in lane. You pick Sona and you are a burden on your own team for the first 20 minutes of every match. This meta is all about who can obliterate the other faster, but apparently Sona isn't allowed to have her damage anymore, when that's pretty much ALL she had in lane.

Meanwhile Janna gets to be the new poke enchanter, maxing W and even taking Ignite, on top of having all of her safety, peel, and utility.

I'll take both, since the first one requires something like 800+ AP and item 3100 against a target that built glass cannon with no bonus health or resistances.

I'll take her in her current state then.

Here to say you are going to get downvoted and have hamhanded comments that give 0 reasoning saying that you and all Sona mains are whiney little bitches because apparently we only think Sona is in a good spot when she is over 55% WR

Truth is Sona takes too much effort to get going now, in this overpaced meta Sona has such a bad earlygame that she has no impact at all in that earlygame/midgame climb It's not uncommon for people to pick Sona and then get told to switch immidietly because who in their right mind wants Sona to be their guardian for the most important phase of the game when literally any other support (including non meta ones) do better in those 25 mins

To the people who screech at anyone wanting to discuss Sona, you guys are constantly warping the story of Sonas winrate and how we react to her getting nerfed, when in reality early preseason making Sona a broken and OP champion, most Sona players were okay with nerfs due to her overperforming from direct influence of runes being changed and there was very little backlash to those first set of nerfs, now the main issue came from what happened after Sona fell to 52% after her first set of nerfs and Aery nerfs, a pretty normal winrate for Sona, but then they threw more nerfs her way and then more indirect nerfs her way crippling her, this is when we all became those "whiney little bitches"

Sona's not in a good spot, a support who has a weaker earlygame then the carry they are supposed to be aiding for said earlygame has no place in this game If Riots balance team had any sense at all then the would have nerfed her the right way by toning down her scaling that comes in 30-40 mins into the game and not smashing her earlygame to tiny little bits when it was already a large weakness

Ahristocats1 votes

yep i've said that for a quite long time now

sona in general needs a rework but before any rework she needs to be a support before everything else, not a freaking carry

remove/nerf her R passvie and buff her base spells

It's still true.

Imagine if Yasuo had 52.62% wr, which is #16 atm btw, and people would ask him to be buffed.

If a champion has to be in the top 10 winrate all the time to be "strong", then the champion might be unhealthy for the game.

a better example would be if Yasuo lost his ability to dash through targets, and no longer had safety when using ultimate under turret.

The issue isn't that Sona isn't in the top 10. It's that she doesn't have damage meaning she isn't a threat in lane, she doesn't have a pre 6 hard CC meaning she can't set up kills for her allies, her heals/shields aren't strong enough to win a straight up fight NOR are the spells strong enough / up often enough to win the long fight by grinding out advantage. But most importantly, she is getting out chunked by other utility supports. There is an issue when Janna is a better poke champion then Sona, but still get's all her disengage power. There is an issue when Bard is out damaging you with just his meep empowered attack VS. your full (pre 6) damage rotation. There is an issue when a champion is designed to get within 550 range but is not given the tools (health, mobility, etc..) to do so with a bit of safety, nor is that champion given the tools to reward having to get that close (damage, hard CC, zoning, etc...)

Sona doesn't need a 55% win rate, she doesn't need a 52% win rate, she just needs to not be a burden on her team for the first 10-15 mins.

Who Fed Ru1 votes

It sounds more like that the other supports are too strong and less like Sona being too weak to me then.

Daedric Etwahl2 votes

And yet it's very possible that Riot is going to employ some hamfisted blanket nerf to the entire support class instead of just focusing on Janna and any other outliers like they should. And a nerf like that will just cause Sona to be even more worthless in an area she REALLY can't afford to be taking any more nerfs.

That's why Sona players are speaking up, because we see that on the horizon.

I mean, if every support ends up being OP that isn't the solution either.

I honestly don't understand your thought process. How do making Sona not garbage during the early game make her OP? No one is asking for her to be doing 300 damage at level 1, no one is asking that her heals / shields be so strong and constant that all incoming damage is negated. How does allowing Sona to take a hit make her overpowered?

You keep avoiding explaining WHY you think she's "fine" or "overpowered"

Who Fed Ru1 votes

Because she already has a winrate of 52, which is perfectly fine. I don't see why you think she needs buffs. Statistics don't lie. Everything over 52% winrate is not fine.

She doesn't need a good early when she has all that power as a enchanter that can buff the whole team for late game. I mean, you call her weak, but somewhere she is still on spot #16, and that has to come from somewhere.

You seem to be confused. I don't think she needs a strong or even "good" early game. I think she needs a less garbage early game. An unimpressive, maybe even airing on weak-ish, early game is fine. Just give her the tools to not be a burden on her team for the first half (or more) of the game's length.

I'm gonna be blunt: You guys are stuck in a loop. A very pathetic loop. A pathetic loop I'm glad I got out of. The truth is that Sona doesn't feel like a champ worth playing UNLESS she's stupidly strong in solo queue. The truth is that people that play Sona glorify the concepts of "positioning" and "being squishy" because she doesn't have anything worth being proud of in her game play to begin with. The truth is that, as much as you guys hate to hear it, as long as Sona's remains so face-roll to play, you're never going to see the end of your woes. She's going to continue feeling weak to play. She's going to continue having a negative stigma around her game play. She's going to continue being shoved into this role of being a low-elo stomping pick and never amounting to much more than that. That's not a "balance" problem. That's a "Sona is 'Garen-status'" problem.

I respect that you have a differing opinion about Sona, but the fact of the matter is that plenty of us are satisfied with the overall form Sona is in right now.

THEN STOP WHINING FOR BUFFS. For solo queue, she's fine as she is right now. Leave it at that and just enjoy your champ.

I can enjoy my champ, but at the same time she lacks the fun factor she used to have, because Riot overnerfed her. Simple as that. They didn't need to nerf her that badly, and that's not Sona's fault. And in case you haven't been paying attention, it's very possible that she'll suffer even further thanks to heal and shield nerfs in the near future.

Sure, winrate wise she's pretty alright, but when Riot has completely taken away any semblance of an early game for a champion, making them almost a chore for both their player and their team, then Riot has fucked up. Plain and simple. Sona's current state can exist in a balanced state, believe it or not.

You can spout about how we're all pathetic all you want, it's not going to change my mind.

You wanna know why they took out her early game?

Imagine if Master Yi or Kayle had a good early game?

THAT'S why her early game is garbage now. Her late game's absolutely ridiculous for the little you do during it, so of course her early game is designed to be absolute garbage, since her late game's the polar opposite just by being on the map. It's not news. If you're so "content" with her, then you'd stop whining about it already. This is what she is now.

You use Yi and Kayle but their early game isn't garbage. It's not amazing, but it's functional. So why can't the hyper carry support also have a functional early game? Not strong, not even good, but not so bad that you are a burden your team has to overcome. A strong late game champion shouldn't have a great early game, but that doesn't mean they should have a garbage early game either.

Sona's early game is just as "functional" as theirs, anyway...at least by solo queue standards. If you're coming out to say Yi and Kayle have functional early games, Sona would also be in the same bracket. However, if you went by my standards, you'd say all three of them have absolutely shitty early games. Regardless, as far as solo queue goes, Sona's early game is functional enough for par.

So why can't the hyper carry support also have a functional early game?

She does...for solo queue.

Really... how odd, i only play solo Q and i have never noticed that Yi and Kayle being so weak that they are more a liability then an asset to their team for the first 10+ mins of the game. I have never had someone pitch a fit because Yi or Kayle was picked for their team.

You talk about "solo Q" and "your" standards. So what in your mind is considered par for those? What are some examples of champions that exceed that level and what are some examples of champions that fail?

What does Solo Q mean to you? like what kind of players are we talking about when we talk about Solo Q? Are these the people who have more then a dozen champions in their pool? Are these the kind of people who actually know most champions kits and how they work? Are these the people who never touch a ranked game? Maybe it's the bronze 5's who win maybe 1 out of every 8 games, but it's always someone else's fault they lost "Garen support is a total legit choose". OR are we talking about players in the high silvers to middle golds? Players that know the strengths and weaknesses of the enemy and are play accordingly. Players that know how to dodge skill shots and other super telegraphed moves.

You keep saying that hyper carries have garbage early games, but they don't. Sure you aren't going to win against the champion who is designed to be super strong early then fall off late. Or perhaps the issue is what we define "early game" as. A character who generally gets to their power spike by the 7 minute mark might define early game a lot different then a character who generally doesn't get their's till the 13 min mark. A character that needs 2 items to overcome there "weakness" might define early game by how long it takes to get those items... That might be a lot different then a champion who needs 4 items to get to that same level.

I don't want to be rude...but there's good reason for that. Meanwhile, it seems you're not winning on Sona despite your elo range being ideal for Sona. You shouldn't blame Sona's current balancing for that. She was generally overtuned for low elo all of season 7, and it was only a matter of time before Riot changed it.

You talk about "solo Q" and "your" standards. So what in your mind is considered par for those? What are some examples of champions that exceed that level and what are some examples of champions that fail?

Practically every support that was designed with the intention of supporting except Karma is good enough for solo queue as of right now. As long as your champion isn't holding some trash win rate while also having 0 pro play significance, you're good enough for solo queue, if that's your priority.

What does Solo Q mean to you? like what kind of players are we talking about when we talk about Solo Q? Are these the people who have more then a dozen champions in their pool? 1. Don't rate Silver/Gold so highly.

  2. Solo queue is more the way we end up playing, not the way we should be playing. A lot of shit slips through the cracks and turn out better or worse because we aren't playing the game it's meant to be played due to lack of coordination, among other things. Sona is one of those champions that actually sucks horrendously, but solo queue's environment allows for her to slip by and survive solely because she won't get punished as hard or as much for just being Sona. The sheer difference is staggering, but people are unaware of it because she's rarely ever picked in pro play to showcase how useless she actually is.

You keep saying that hyper carries have garbage early games, but they don't.

No, they still do. You're thinking of hyper carry marksmen, and those guys have a support backing them up all game. Hyper carries generally have shitty early games.

Honestly speaking, i used to play Sona back during my climb through low Plat... At this point i think only a full rework could address all the issues that have piled on top of her outdated kit (And no, the 4.13 atrocity of a "rework" doesn't count, that only introduced more and more problems to her kit over the years than it solved)

The problem with buffing her, is that due to her simplistic nature of gameplay, sheer numbers buffs can easily push her over the top (just as sheer number nerfs easily put her down into garbage tier) so yeah...

Too bad we don't get anymore Class Reworks, i'd love to see one for the Enchanter class since it's been so historically problematic...

Considering their track record, I'm incredibly thankful that Riot stopped class updates before moving onto enchanters, to be honest.

Personally, I don't think Sona is that hard to balance, she's got basically the most clearly defined and exploitable weaknesses out of just about any other enchanter.

True... but for some reason, it just seems like whatever work is done on her, is done by people with no understanding of either the champion's fantasy or the gameplay.

Old Sona was "fun" because you had an insane level of safety, and "YOU" knew you were doing a metric ton to help your team.

If you weren't the actual Sona player though.... well she was either that champ who stood so far back and did "basically nothing" such that you didn't know sometimes if the player was AFK. OR she was that trash pile on the other team that you could never reach (1000 range auras BITCH) who was cycling spells so fast your enemies always seemed to hit a little harder then you thought they should, took a little less damage then you know they should, and were always just a little bit faster then you could manage to deal with. Or in other words, Sona was a walking ball of bonus stats for her team. This was a problem, much like old Soraka and her ability to gift mana was a problem.

I think a straight buff to her HP numbers wouldn't do that much to make her over powered. Would at least make it so that you aren't getting chunked down by enemy healers/ utility supports.

Trying to promote actual, reasonable discussion on the boards?

And about Sona no less?

Where do you think we are, friend?

But seriously though, the first comment is a perfect example of why the boards completely suck for any discussion.

It's a damn shame what Riot has done to sona the past few months, and the fact that you can't ever talk about it without people like that, or worse, is just despicable.

But, I digress. I personally think Sona needs help right now. The fact that another support can obliterate my healthbar in a single spell, while my auto-q-staccato combo does barely anything is completely ridiculous. The fact that JANNA of all things is now a better poke support than Sona, on top of her ridiculous defensive prowess, is completely unacceptable.

And what's worse, she and the rest of the struggling enchanters might suffer because of one or two problematic ones, so that's great. As if Sona needed to be even more worthless early than she already is.

Sorry if this got a bit ranty, but I honestly felt the need to vent, especially since how DARE I speak about Sona on the boards.

She's no longer an early game support but an absolute late game monster. It does make it a little hard for her since supports are supposed to be strong early and allow their ADCs to get to mid/late game but I don't think it's a bad thing for her to shake the meta a bit.

If you get a Sona to level 16 she provides more overall supporting abilities than any other support and I'd be willing to bet her late game win rate reflects that.

I don't think it's bad for Sona to shake up the standard either, I think it's a good thing, the problem is they've made her next to worthless in the early game, taking way, WAY too much from her with their hamfisted nerfs last year.

Oh, and now we're probably going to suffer further because Janna is too strong. Joy.

They're already looking at nerfing Janna according to meddler so idk why you'd complain

Check out my last line. Meddler said they are looking into Healing and Shielding power.

If they nerf the entirety of the item line, then that causes nerfs to Enchanters that have no reason to be nerfed: Not just Sona, but Karma, Soraka, and Nami too, soinstead of JUST nerfing Janna like they should, they are very possibly going to nerf Enchanter items as a whole, despite the majority of the class as a whole not being any issue.

I hope I'm wrong, and they just nerf Janna, but I'm not holding out considering Riot's track record.

A strong late game should often be offset by a weak-ish early game. This is fair and understandable. That said, a strong early game should NOT be offset by a garbage early game, where you are more of a liability to your team then a help.

If Riot wants her to have a weak support role in the early game, then she needs a strong poke mechanic. If they want her poke to be unimpressive, then she needs healing/ utility skills that make up for her lack of damage. She doesn't need to be a power house from beginning to end, but she does need the tools to contribute SOMETHING to her team before level 6 (and often times it's actually closer to level 11 before you finally have the items needed to offset her built in weaknesses).

I have always hated the idea that a Sona is somehow "special" in the fact that she has a insanely good late game. There are plenty of other characters who are equally or more powerful in the late game. Yet you would never see their early game so weak that they can't function in their roles till level 6 (and sometimes as late as level 11). I challenge you to think of any other character who is a monster in the late game, then imagine if they were so lacking in power during the early game that a minion wave could kill them from full health.

I prefer if she gets buffed on her support-like abilities , like W , her Q poke isn't that bad atm though

Better idea: revert her back to her pre reworked state. It wasn't unhealthy and it wasn't a problem. She had impact at all phases of the game and she was actually FUN to play.

Yeah.... NO. Pre rework Sona was a glorified ball of bonus stats for her team. I wouldn't mind the spell weaving mechanic back, but 1000 range semi perma stat buffs is just asking for trouble.

I love Sona. She is my main champ. I actually do not hate her early game. Some champs are early game champs some late. I love experimenting with different builds to see if I can make a difference. I will say this, I feel like her movement speed is so super slow it makes her an easy target. What makes Sona fun for me is the build and kicking butt late game*[sona-playing]*

Honestly I think since they are reverting reworks... she should probably be on that list and tweak it abit.
