Chat should take a proactive approach

To start, let it be known that the chat in this game is already controlled. I'm only advocating for a different method which doesn't see players getting their access to content they've paid for removed, essentially having their money legally stolen from them since it's in the agreement.

There are two ways two control what is said in a game's chat: proactively, by enforcing a chat filter so that players aren't able to use offensive or hateful words in the first place, or reactively, by giving players the ability to be offensive or hateful and then punishing them afterwards.

The proactive approach is more conducive to a healthy online community. I don't just mean asterisks replacing words, but the words being impossible to send or even type in the chat to begin with. If the words are removed from the chat's capabilities, then it's impossible to say them. So no one can be hurt or offended in the first place. This would not only prevent the tilt caused by offense, like if someone were to call you shit, a lot of people would start to tilt, int, or even leave from that. But it would also prevent worse outcomes, like if someone tells you to kill yourself, it could have emotional effects outside of the game. Some people may even cause harm to themselves from getting such treatment in a game they use to escape their usual emotional pain.

Conversely, the reactive approach of punishing people after the fact is not conducive to a healthy community. People are still free to offend and hurt others, just with the safeguard that they might get their account banned for doing so, though most people who lend to this community being known as the biggest, most toxic one do so sparingly enough that they don't ever get punished.

However, it is important to note that an approach like this is ONLY relevant to online chatrooms or game chats, and does not stretch to other aspects of life or law. This is one of the only situations where a proactive approach is not the same as a a proactive punishment. No one is punished by a chat filter. It's akin to forcing people to wear seatbelts in a car, or taking a friend's keys if they're drunk, rather than getting the ticket for having no seatbelt or the DUI.

Sorry for the language lol but how on earth would you police that and thats just the f bomb never mind all the others? People will just us abbreviations if certain words get censored.

Most people dont mind bad language, its more of the context its used in.

Lets be honest though its sometimes best to let people vent in chat rather than trolling as a way of release. You can always just mute them

if you look at wizard101 it's impossible to type a single letter aside from A or I this would mean that everyone in league would have to spell words correctly for them to go through

Use binary with A and I, or even A and space.

The context doesn't matter to the punishment system. It's not the people who understand this is a game and know no one means any hurtful things they may say who report others. It's the people who aren't mature enough to understand that fact who do so, and it's them who need to be restricted like this.

And like the other reply said, make it impossible to type single letters, albeit making it impossible to type single consonants would be enough.

If people will use abbreviations, then the obvious solution is to censor the abbreviations as well.

I for one would say don't punish people for using the chat if it's going to exist with an optional filter. Since now almost everything related to the game state that you could be saying in chat, the chat is no longer required.

But since they likely wouldn't do that, I've suggested a better option than punishment.

Not being able to see trash wont make it less worthless or less destructive.

People who got permed already proved they are incapable of behaving, there is no reason the trash should get special treatment at the cost of everyone else.

People who get banned for chat are synonymous with people who go into ranked to int. They aren't incapable of behaving, as behavior isn't the thing they're getting punished for.

To say it's at the cost of everyone else is implying that people simultaneously use such language and belong to the group that doesn't use such language and doesn't get punished for it. That's a logical impossibility.

Glorious semantic acrobatics. Sadly, they are meaningless.

It wont change the fact that people get banned for being trash - being banned is not a punishment (unlike the previous warnings), it is taking out the worthless garbage so nobody else has to smell it.

Why leave the trash where everyone else has to deal with it in order to give it endless additional chances? It already proved itself.

Based on this faulty logic, you should be banned for calling people trash.

Someone calls you trash for going 1/7 on an easy champion, you're saying they're trash in turn and should be banned, meaning you should get banned as well. It doesn't matter why you're calling them trash. You're still committing the same offense.

This isn't about you feeling like you're better than them, this is about people not wrongfully getting their money stolen because people like you go around thinking they're trash and somehow not getting punished yourselves.

Filters are the easiest thing in the world to bypass. There already is a filter in game that you have to go out of your way to disable.

Filters only do one of two things. Either they do absolutely nothing or they make it incredibly frustrating to even use normal words (can't say grass due to it having "ass" for example)

Well you don't actually have to go out of your way. It's easier than adjusting visual settings.

You've simply stated a false dichotomy. If someone has to go out of their way to bypass it and be toxic, that means it'll be less likely for them to do so, which is the purpose.

And if it's created properly, then a word containing the letters "ass" won't be censored, so the other point is moot too.

You're just ***uming I mean a really low-effort chat filter like the one we already have, which isn't the case.

Yeah the filter that everyone just bypasses like it's nothing making it entirely pointless to even be activated. The only way for a chat filter to do what you want it to do is literally make it the most obnoxious and frustrating thing ever, even for those who never curse and even then people still are able to bypass that sort of filter.

Sorry but no filter is going to stop anyone that really wants to be toxic. I have seen so many different types of filters and it's hilarious that you actually think that they do anything at all
