Maokai support

So I was trying Maikai support, mostly because of Nautilus and his "success" in LCS. Because "If Naut can make it, why not Mao?"

If I where to Compare these two Naut is more tanky and thanks to his shield he can sustain even more damage. Mao on the other hand is quicker, has saplings good for checking creeks and can saty on lane for a long period of time thanks to combination of his passive and relic shiled.

Overall it feels good playing Mao as support, but I have tendency to jump in prematurely and die, even though fight is won, I have much higher death count with him and I have with other supports.

I can imagine Mao support having succes in soloQ but in pro play not so much as Mao in top is so much stronger that putting him in support role is kind of wase, well not unless there would be a top lane champion better prefered than Mao.

Iif someone will intend to play Mao support, I highly reccomend item 3800 as it gives him great opportunity to chatch up with enemy and jump them with twisted advance. But item 3800 does not give any Mr or Ar and therefore without other items Mao is still squishy. In this light it is great to build item 3110 and item 3065/item 3102 (though I would probably go with item 3190, because of its utility for my team)

Lastly as for skill order, I go with maxing W (twisted avance) as it has scaling root duration. Then Q and lastly E.

For anyone trying Mao support, good luck and don't die much.

Gonna try this when I get off of works. Been looking for some other types of champs to play boy lane and I think Mao is a good candidate!

Oh this absolutely works as a matter of fact support maokai is my "tilt champ" that is to say if I'm losing a bunch I just play Mao supp and its freelo. See the trick to Mao supp is just have defensive masteries and runes get the spellthiefs edge and put two points in your sapling early. Throw saplings all lane phase sit back and watch enemy botlane rage quit. Caveat - sivir Morgana counters this strat but it can still work if u play your cards right

Edit: I think the reason you die a lot is because you play him with a top lane mebtality. When you play maokai supp you're basically playing a botlane mage that transitions into a tank support mid-late game. Imagine you're playing Annie or Morgana support you don't "go in" at all just throw sapling to the back line and it will hit roughly 80% of the time because saplings home in on your targets. The only time you should be using twisted advance and his Q is when they go in on your ADC or your jungler is ganking. Anyway good luck have fun on your supp maokai.

I like to run him with Clarity as a second summoner spell. If paired with a siver you have some of the hardest lane bullying potential in the game. If you sapling cheese krugs you can get a very early level 2, and you both then run HAM until you both run out of mana, let them push out slightly, call your jungler in for clean up, pop clarity and watch yourself win lane.

Bonus points if you sapling toss under their fountain to cancel teleports, letting your adc get a free wave in before backing.
