I was in a silver 5 to silver 4 series and i lost, the game then told me i would get a free win in the next. Why did this happen? Did I do really well or does it work based on MMR?

It works as long as youre below plat or not moving into plat

I got it getting into plat?

Either it works for gold 1 or they changed it.

I didnt get a free win after losing my first series into plat

What's it based off though? Or does it happen regardless as long as you are below plat?

In Bronze, Silver and Gold, If you get into a series, but lose it, the next time you get into that series you get a free win.

IE: I'm silver 5, I got into promos, but lost. Next time I get to promos I will only have to win one out of 2 games rather than 2 out of 3.

Once you reach plat the system no longer gives you the free win.

So I'm plat 5, I got into promos and lost. Next time I go into promos I still have to play the best of 3.

if you lose your series you get it on your next attempt, thats pretty much it.

Also, if you're silver 3 and get demoted to silver 4, you get a free win on your next promo series to get back to silver 3.

It's a thing called promo helper, and Riot implemented it in the preseason I believe. Basically, in the lower elos if you win a game in a promo/series, that game carries over to your next promo series. So if I am in my bronze two promos and get one victory but two losses, the victory carries over to my next promo. If I am in my silver series, and win two games but lose three, I have two wins next time I get into my series.
