Bard is a FANTASTIC support. just because you've played with people who aren't good as him (which come on he's a pretty out-there design wise champion that is ALL about positioning).

need sustain? bard can just walk to lane before the match starts, set 3 shrines, back, and then come back to lane with full mana as minion waves come. theres 210 hp in heals sitting right there for him or the adc to grab if they so need.

need cc? his q is actually a lot easier to land a stun on than most people think. here's a little bit of information on his q. say you were to throw it out, and hit someone at max range with it. if you score a hit at max range with his q, it will extend the distance it travels just a little bit more to find a wall or a minion. you can also use their wave of minions against them by hitting them THROUGH a minion.

his e? fantastic. i see a lot of bards just it poorly though. you can use it against chasing enemies so long as you have your q up and feel confident you can stun them afterwards(if you can't, you should probably stick toLeeSin). it's also fantastic for denying backs later into the game. lets say you hurt sion badly, and he ults towards his nexus tower. there are some walls long enough for you to ride through all the way up to him before he's even halfway done with his back animation

his r? this is also a big problem i see with most bards. a common mistake is to think of it only as a defensive tool. there are MANY uses for his ult. im gonna run through all of them. stall dragon/baron, protect turrets/inhibs, take away enemy turrets for dives, take away enemy minions so your turret focuses champions hitting the turret, isolate carrys from their tanks and vice-versa to turn a 5v5 into a 5v2 or a 4v5 into a 4v3. i use his ult very similar to old vegar e. try to catch people in the corners of it for the best desired affect, so you don't catch your teammates or ult all 5 of the enemy team at once (essentially wasting it)

all in all, bard has the potential to be one of the best IF NOT the best support in league given time.

edit; i forgot to mention the chimes. the chimes essentially give bard limitless sustain, and stupidly strong roaming power. the only thing i would suggest about chimes is that you probably should only go and collect them when either one or both of your enemy laners has backed/is dead, or you're very confident your adc can survive AND have his/her blessing to go.

Bard is a champion that requires more time to learn than most people are willing to put in.

Additonally, your team has to know what the fuck Bard actually DOES before he's useful.

But most importantly, if Bard's team sucks, he's going to be useless.

Bard is a force amplifier. If your team was rock solid before, with Bard they're adamantium, damn near unstoppable. If your team was a wet noodle, Bard is like that chicken flavored seasoning packet. He just makes the noodles tastier for the other team.

I'd say the only other "force amplifier" that is at Bard's level is Shen.

True that. You're a really helpful guy as Bard, but man oh man you ain't got anything by yourself. Basically, Bard helps people help themselves and due to his roaming nature is good at warding.

Bard appears to be coming together in his ranked team performance now. He probably doesn't even need the next set of buffs queued up for him now that his kit and playstyle is starting to make sense to people.

I've just been fooling around with him in blind draft normals, and going about even on that. Contrary to my original expectations, I think he does have it in him to be a solo queue hero in the hands of a practiced player. He has the potential for amazing game turning plays.

The thing a learning bard player has to realize (because your teammates certainly will), you're going to accidentally troll your teammates super hard until you figure stuff out with Bard. Last game I totally screwed over our Shen by catching him mid dash while he was trying to catch a Vayne that was kiting him and he died. You've got to float above the rage and look for opportunities to be useful after those kinds of mistakes, and of course learn not to take those risks in the first place. Become like Bard, detach yourself from the passions of the worldly plane and look at the big picture. At other points in the game I single-handedly stopped what would have been a devastating split push into our base, helped stall the enemy team picking up objectives from across the map, and caught out those sneaky squishies trying to be clever and kite my buddies.

This last kind of play, I feel, is the most awesome use of Bard's ultimate. People complain about unreliability of the long-distance ult, but you've only got to catch one wayward split-pushing punk before it pays off. My personal feelings are you should never save Bard's ultimate for a rainy day. It's much more dangerous to use once both teams are in engagement distance of each other. It doesn't even have to land to be useful. The effect distance is so large that if you lead it in a manner that enemies have to alter their course to avoid it, that sometimes gives your speedy assassin the precious second or half-second it takes to catch up and pin them down.

Like others have said, Bard is a force multiplier. He's not tanky enough to deal with the enemy hyper carry going nuclear on your team, but he sets up for your heavy hitters and prevents escaping enemies like nobody's business. If an enemy was in range of Bard before they started to turn tail, they almost have to choose to commit to killing him if they want to escape come late game.

All of this said, Bard has a lot of obvious weaknesses even if you don't count faulty human judgment being able to sink your team. He's not very tanky or mobile early, so he's very susceptible to sneaky junglers if you don't have the jungle lit up like Christmas at all times. Bursty support and ADC combos also have an edge against him early game. I would never strategically pick Bard specifically for his duo lane against just about any matchup over any other support. Your ADC is either going to have to play passively or be comfortable enough to deal with the enemy lane without reliable aid from Bard in an exchange. Bard's synergy with the jungle champion is equally or maybe more important than the marksman.

He's an interesting champion, and his unique playstyle is honestly the main thing keeping me hooked on League for my current time investment.

I've never seen a bard win a game for the team he's on.

I've seen all the other broken supports single handedly win games for the teams they're on... We've all experienced the thresh hook over the wall with the lantern bringing that jungler into your face. We've all had the nami heal save X amount of people while harassing you down in lane so that late game adc shes with can free farm all day. We've all had the XXX other support. I just don't see a support thats like a mixmatch of other utilities + a wall jump being that viable or useful.

He's too rounded I guess is a good explaination, does too much but none of it well.

Oops2 votes

i have seen good bards only on high elo plat + ..maybe his skill floor is 2 high>?

DarkFaun Fortes2 votes

YES! Simply put. He take alot of skill, and good positioning strategy, on top of Reflexes.

Most players only have ONE of these traits, and most in gold only have two.

Aelvr2 votes

Woah! That explains EVERYTHING! All I have is positioning strategy, that's why I can't carry as Fizz. (not irony or cynicism, 100% srs)

DarkFaun Fortes1 votes

The only one I have is strategy, I'm love games like StarCraft and, yes chess (gotta respect the classics).

I dont have good enough internet for reaction time, and Honestly I SUCK at shooter games (No aim).

Thats Why I dont use "skillshot" champs. But as support and jungle Objectives are more important, and thus how I carry my team.

Somone with all 3 Reflex, Strategy, and "skill" (aim/placement) Could make Bard A god!!!

THANK YOU!!! I've been maining Bard on both my NA and PBE accounts for the last 2 weeks and he is by far the most impactful support I have played in a while, if Bard misplays he may accidentally give a play to the enemy team, but if Bard is practiced and efficient and his team has the positioning and the builds he can be a game changer, I cannot wait to see some high tier play with Bard.

Yormaughm1 votes

I've been playing Bard a lot recently, and I have to agree he's pretty fun if you and your team know what's going on. He's got so many options, and his potential to make plays is huge, which is awesome. Most of them don't involve doing damage though, and that's why a certain segment of players will always hate him.

Legit the one bad thing about Bard is that I'm pretty sure he 100% loses a 1 v 1 vs. any other champion of the same level as him, and as a support he'll probably be underleveled for most or all of the game, meaning he's useless if he gets caught out. BUT he has infinite tools to run away from a fight. His Q, and R, and even his auto-attack if he has meeps up all stall opponents and his movespeed + chimes can mean that chasing him is just pointless. And following him through an E is more or less a 50/50 for the opponent if they don't have vision of where he's going.

In fact that's a trick I've done with him early in the laning phase. If you know the enemy team doesn't have vision in the bot side river, and can't see your jungler, go into the river and just use your E toward the lane. Especially if they're pushing, they'll think you're setting up a gank for your jungler and back off the wave. I've used this several times and it almost always works. It's similar to throwing Thresh's lantern into the river for no reason. With Bard this can also allow you to sneak in a few chimes that may have spawned in the river or bushes and also you can ward while you're up there.

OP already covered a lot of the uses for Bard's ult, but when used right it's one of the most fun abilities in the game. "Oh you think you're safe under your tower? --- NOPE, dive away." "Karthus trying to revenge ult your low-health ADC who just killed him? ---- NOPE" and my favorite "I've got them right where I want them but my team is lagging behind a bit ---- R ---- then my team shows up, buh-bye." Pro tip though, it doesn't work on Nexuses, I tried to save our Nexus with it once, didn't work :(

Also, item 3504 is one of the best possible items you can buy on Bard. So much so that I really wish it built out of support starter items. Everything it has on it is something bard wants, and the synergy with his W is amazing. When Bard has item 3504 his W turns into a mini-Sivir ult for anyone he casts it on, or any ally who steps on a shrine already placed.

Steelflame1 votes

Actually, Bard has enough damage in his kit to 1v1 most mages without too much difficulty, and can kite out most bruisers if he is able to force the fight in the jungle. With just a Iceborn and frost queen. A lot of people REALLY underestimate his damage, and his base AD is now great, making Iceborn really potent on him. Pre Iceborn though his damage is very lackluster.

Also, tips for people playing bard (As I have been enjoying him a lot), his ult is a great pick tool. You spot an enemy out of position running from your team? Stop them in place for 2.5 seconds as your team catches up. Time your Q so that it hits them the instant stasis ends, and you have a 4.3 second hard mobility stopping CC on 1-2 enemies easily. Dropping 3 shrines in the jungle for your jungler is a 210+AP ratio of hp. Which can easily be the difference between backing after a clear, and ganking.

Bard is the champion that made me actually want to support, and it's made blind queues a lot easier. Just say "Fill" and I get to do wharves, since most of the time that means Support and I can up my Bard game.

WeFlyNoLie1 votes

I was primarily a top main playing Garen before the release of Bard. When I played support I generally chose Braum, he was my go-to before the tank meta shifted and almost every other lane was a squishy champion. He filled the tank role for the team nicely being able to set up plays or allow disengages.

Since the release of Bard, I've been considering switching to a support main just because of Bard. I think he's a fantastic champion and very rewarding to play. Now that the tank meta exists, I don't feel obligated to choose a tank support if I'm given the support role.

He's really dependent on his team to be useful though, and I can see why people would rather go with the safe bet of Thresh with his get out of jail free card (lantern) rather take the chance and play a champion that is more reliant on his team but has a higher potential for more impactful plays.

In my opinion, I relate him to Karma pre-rework. High skill cap champion, can make good plays, but nobody wants to take the chance of playing them because of their unreliability (when compared to other supports) so nobody learns the champion and simply deems them worthless. Now you could argue Karma's viability before her rework, but that's not really the point I'm trying to make, its really just the comparison and people not knowing what Bard really does. I still have to tell people in Platinum to grab his healing shrines after they've charged.

I don't think Bard will see the same fate as Karma and require a rework in the future considering his abilities are much more defined in what they do and should be used for.

Tl:DR

Bard's a great champion, but people like their "safe" picks like Thresh/Leona.

Bard is both my singularly least favorite champion and the best designed champ riot has made in a very very long time. He's difficult to master, unique, and can be game changing without being OP as hell right out of the gate (like nearly every other recent champ has been).

I both would never play him and am extremely glad he made it into the game.

CoolKnightST1 votes

I really like to Bard, in URF he was like Nami & in regular solo Q I was really supprised I won both 3 games. He brings some unique strengths to the table & the only reason why he doesn't get played in lcs was because he would gain some massive buffs. I think that bard is in a really strong position right now. But his skillcap is probaly one of the highest whe have got from support add the moment.

Fisk1 votes

I am a plat bard main and I can confirm he is strong. His abilities are difficult to use (strategically) but he is an amazing supports with pretty much infinite potential in the ways he can be built/used.

The Soulforged1 votes

He requires lots of skill and teamwork to be his best... I still think he needs buffs and even the good Bards I see would have done better as some other support.

Transgressor1 votes

He(perhaps an "IT"? dunno, Bard's supposed to be a spiret with a gender or something?) is an exclusively support champion whether we like it or not, and his kit has 2 abilities which can directly influence the lane and 2 that can influence the entire game, with a gamechanging ultimate. At his current state he doesn't have enough power/utility to do both well, and risks ruining one of those aspects every choice he makes. His passive is cool and artisticaly unique, gives you the insentive to roam and help other lanes and compensates you a little bit for being away from your lane. It scales really nicesly into late game and gets some cool AoE effects and whatnot. The problem is his passive doesn't help distinguish which of those 2 aspects Bard wants to excel at: do you want to dominate your lane? do you want to dominate teamfights?

Perhaps he shouldn't have to make a choice, and get more powerfull in general as the game goes on. But the problem is that meeps spawn in a far too weird manner, making it hard for you to collect them depending on which side of the map you are, and they don't follow your general play-flow pattern: if you stay mostly at bot lane, there should be allot of meeps there with some potential interactions with the enemy team, if you want to roam meeps should spawn in the jungle and in places you mostly linger while you roam, not outside basegates and in front of Baron.

What if meeps empowered and/or influenced his abilities the more he collects, instead of just improving his basic attacks giving him another gimmicky harrass tool that actually does nothing more than annoy everyone after a certain time has passed? Every single support there is has specific trade-offs depending what they do in the game, Thresh for example can go full tank and get only some meaningfull damage with his R come late-game, or he can go utility-esque and utilizing low cooldowns+mobility to be more of an influence for the entire game and dealing more damage because he can spam his disruptive spells more often, but gets kinda squishy and could potentialy lose the game for his team if they lack his really important utility presence. Zyra can go full mage to do crazy damage, but will lack the required support tools to be more of a help to her team in general instead of bursting someone down, going OOM, planting a ward every 6 minutes and getting bursted every time she gets picked off. Or she could buy cooldowns, aura items, some HP and with a more disruption-centric playstyle can focus on rooting with E getting vision with W and poking safely with Q, eventually turning the tides with a well placed R, while warding constantly and being everywhere for her to annoy the enemy team.

Bard can't, Bard doesn't. His E can only be used to setup some form of flanking/mobility manuever and can get your team killed. His R can make or brake a teamfight, get your teammates killed, help enemies get away or clutch save a teammate(if they are smart enough to go in it). His heal is a bit wonky and not really that impactfull like a Sona W for example, his Q is the only thing he has going for him, but unlike Blitzcranks pull, bullshit kit and safe initiations, if you fail your Q you poke thus you can't damage thus you can't trade thus you can't stun to settup a kill or a nice gank. He's just a mashup of cool ideas that don't really work with eachother, glued together under a visualy appealing and intriguing thematic, creating a "Wandering caretaker" an omnipotent being with no affiliation with reality and creation, influencing events that could brake the universe appart, who actually runs around the map making the game, or braking the game.

shalexade1 votes

I tend to find, that a good Bard guarantee double kills (or at least a kill) in bot lane, every time a jungler visits.

It is ridiculously easy to gank a lane when you can all walk up to them standing still like stunned mullets and still have your CC/gap closers in hand for afterwards.

It amazing how often Bard supports don't do this.

DrNova1 votes

Personally I'd rather pick most other supports. Yeah he is fun to play, but far too much effort is needed to play him to do the things that other supports in some way or another do much more efficiently.

Doogmi1 votes

Been having good success with bard as well 9-9 in my ranked plat 2 so far. First few games were rocky, but I have a build I prefer and feel comfortable with his mechanics. I usually get a bunch of cr a p for picking him, but when I end up with 16-20 assists and we win the game they run out of things to say :) bard is super fun though, probably my favorite champ at the moment.

Gooberp1 votes

Bard's base stats are too low to be effective, IMO. When Bard gets ahead, he can almost be in all 3 lanes simultaneously supporting everyone and the jungler. Just be everywhere doing everything. When Bard gets behind, he can do almost nothing. He relies so massively on chimes and meeps to deal any quantity of damage, he can't poke and roam when he's behind. He can't roam into the enemy jungle to collect a third of his chimes when he's behind. He can't roam even just to ward when he's behind, because he is SO squishy in comparison to other supports. His lower static gold income relative to other supports (i.e. ignoring assists, because he doesn't get as much use out of the gold items if he wants to roam) means he has fewer items, and support items already are fairly weak for personal power.

And the issue isn't that he has high reward, because as mentioned elsewhere in this thread, he is a team amplifier. Bard will never make game-changing decisions, despite what people think about his E and his R. Bard creates opportunities for his teammates to make game-changing decisions, but he can NEVER do them himself. Bard cannot chase a low HP target into the enemy jungle with his E and kill them. He Es and lets his assassin go do it. Bard cannot R to stall dragon and then steal it, he Rs to let his jungler do it. Bard cannot R a turret to dive and kill someone, even in lane, because he is too weak. He must let his ADC do it. The majority of other supports can all do at least one thing by themselves: Taric can duel quite well, Leona and Thresh can lockdown someone so long that they just die from the CC and nearby minions. Sona and Soraka are poking fiends, and Sona/Lulu/Nami/Janna can single-handedly win a teamfight with their ults. Bard's R doesn't do anything even close to those four ults, but everyone seems to think it's an #LCSbigplays maker.

Bard is high-risk, low-reward, and this is why he is a subpar choice. It's not because he is incapable, but because he is not capable ENOUGH, in particular when behind, which is supposed to be a dampened effect on supports because that's the whole point of supports is they're supposed to be useful when behind.
