if you're not following these easy guidelines, you will plateau at some point.

  1. you can never have enough farm- seriously. 15 minions = 1 kill. so farm up. you don't have to go in and constantly fight with your lane opponent. it's a bad idea as you risk getting outplayed, ganked, or just plain missing out on farm. this especially applies if you've given up a kill to the enemy laner early. do not try to fight them after that. focus only on farming.

  2. Objectives are MUCH more important than kills- even if your enemy laner is up 3-0 on you, if you get his turret first, that's a massive advantage, as it takes away a teleport point, takes away his(or her) safety when pushing top lane, and all around pressures the enemy team to keep minion waves from pushing to their 2nd turret which causes other lanes to open up to take those turrets. Dragon is also a huge objective to get right now. the way dragon is, usually the first team to get dragon holds a very large advantage until the other team can get it. dragon is huuuge. baron is also very big. the armor and mr it gives to your minions is so overbearing that it becomes very easy to splitpush.

  3. If you get behind in lane, build tanky- this advice applies to supports, tops, and jungles(even though they don't actually have a lane). you are of absolutely no use to the team as a toplaner or jungler if you're 0/5 but have say, 300 ad, or 300 ap. a dead ally is a useless ally. build some hp/armor/mr or all three of those, start soaking some damage, and get gold through assists until you can afford to build damage items again.

  4. do not dilly dally if your team has a substantial lead- as i said before, 15 minions = 1 kill. if you get up say 15-5, your goal should be to end the game as quick as possible. the game becomes COMPLETELY different once your enemy team starts nearing full build. it becomes less about individual skill and more about team comps at that point. say your enemy team has a yasuo, tristana, or ryze, and your team has a darius, lux, and corki(anyone who has a good early/mid game, but kind of drops off late), you DO NOT want those three nearing full build at ANY point so you should end the game before they even get close. an 0/15 full build yasuo or tristana or ryze or nasus, will still absolutely dominate anyone late game just because it's what they do. they hypercarry.

  5. DO NOT AT ANY POINT, FREAK OUT ON YOUR TEAMMATES- as a former toxic, when i say this, i mean it. nobody wants to play a game where some guy is chewing their head off because they made a few(or a lot of mistakes), and all around lowers the morale of the rest of the team, therefore guaranteeing a loss.

  6. ward- no explanation needed. just do it ya mook.

follow these tips, and the only limitations you have are ones you impose upon yourself.

As he said:

He didn't say he was a perfect player but he obviously gets the important cores of League strategy. There's plenty of people in gold who don't get this stuff but make it by anyways through good teammates or lots of skill at champ mechanics. It's pretty sad really.

thanks for the constructive comment friend. i know ill get out of silver some day. im in a bit of a rut as of late, and have dropped from s1 to s4 since season ended. also most of my friends that are gold + say i play like a gold. im just not at the point where i can easily carry every single team i get regardless of circumstances. but i'm really really really glad you decided to add that very helpful, non defamatory comment to a simple advice thread. thanks again pal. have a great one :)

Not a bad list, but I fear the first point applies not for Supports. :P

It sort of does if you substitute 'farm' for 'getting free gold'. Your gold per 10 item is important to upgrade to tier 2 as soon as possible. If you have the blue or the shield one, use it! Last hit those minions as soon as you have a shield proc up, preferably the canon minion. Your blue (frostfang-thingy) gp10 item also procs on auto attacks, both on champions and towers, if they step close, aa them, if you're close enough to the tower, aa that. It conserves more of your mana while still allowing you to get gold.

As an aside: bloody well build a sightstone right after your gp10 tier 2 and replace your ward trinket with a sweeping lens. Please.

BADxW0LF3 votes

With the trinket, I would say that depends on who you are laning against or who the jungler is. Say you are up against a Twtich ADC or Evelynn jung...I would, instead, upgrade your trinket to give you constant pink wards. This can work equally as well as a sweeping lens for clearing out enemy wards while also giving you constant vision where/when you need it. Evelynn is also a crafty little bitch. Place a pink ward in that bot lane river bush and you should have no problems as long as your adc places one in the tri bush.

As long as those 2 aren't anywhere on the map, yes, go for the sweeping lens.

And if you are playing jung, always always ALWAYS get seeping lens. It's better for ganks. If you don't gank pre 6, sure you can get a warding totem, but get your sweeping lens before you start ganking. And try to practice using it just on the outside of your vision so the ward doesn't catch you for that one second.

cshakes5 votes

IDK, I generally rush the Sightstone, then the GP10 item. So with Sona, I'd start item 3303, then build item 2049, then complete item 3092. I also always swap my trinket for item 3341. If there are stealth champs, I buy a regular pink, and prioritise upgrading to item 3364. If I'm on an AP support (Janna, Sona, etc) I'll build a item 3023 next.

BADxW0LF1 votes

Generally you want to build your GP10 item first and, if able, buy the first half of the sightstone and pots (I main Nami so generally buy a decent amount of mana pots over health pots). That is my first recall. My second would be to finish the sightstone, get first initial boots and then a mana regen item.

I think building your GP10 item first is the best way to ensure that you are where you need to be mid game. Otherwise you will be struggling to make ends meet and keep up with the gold income on opposing team.

Lately, I've been able to stay in lane a lot longer and get both my next lvl gp10 item and my sightstone with some gold to spend on either pots or mana regen items.

Twin Shadows is a great item for an AP support. Great for when chasing and when in the Jungle and no vision on some champs.

cshakes1 votes

Well, it's probably because I mainly play team 5v5, but I find that we get ludicrously behind if I can't organise vision by getting a sightstone on my 1st back. I don't know about solo queue. Really, the best income item in the game is Sightstone, since then you won't have to individually buy wards and can save to other, more important items. I main Janna, Sona and Taric mostly. I start with support item + ward + pot(s) and a ward trinket.

BADxW0LF2 votes

I forgot to add that I also buy a pink on my first recall. That way you don't have to buy wards constantly (hopefully) and can always be on the lookout for ganks. You can either put it in the tri bush or the river bush, although river bush it will more than likely get destroyed by jungler, but hey, vision for an extended period of time.

DeynaTaggerung3 votes

I agree with shakes on this one. Having that extra vision is so critical for defense, dragon control, etc, and I feel that I save almost as much by not having to keep buying wards as I would gain from a gp10. Additionally being able to have that sweeping lens early is really nice for getting some jungler love. Just proc that tribute passive (if you're an ap support) and set up your adc for kills to get the assist gold and the gold should be rolling in pretty well.

BADxW0LF1 votes

While having that vision is crucial for preventing ganks and whatnot, if you aren't keeping up with your ADC or their support, you're going to have a bad time. In my time of playing support, I have never had to worry about buying multiple wards. The only wards I have ever bought are my trinket, a pink ward after first recall, and then my sightstone on second recall. It plays out really well 95% of the time. Everyone has their own way of doing things, though.

My play style for champs I get spellthief's edge with is very poke heavy. I like to starve the enemy ADC of any farm. So getting that Frostfang before sightstone is crucial to my play style. I get gold really fast and can poke the crap out of enemy bot lane. Plus the extra mana regen is really nice with mana heavy champs.

Duke Anax3 votes

When I get gold item first I don't get Sightstone until after the first two or three ganks.

That means I need to buy a bunch of green wards, effectively spending more gold on wards than I get from the gold item.

BADxW0LF1 votes

To each their own. I guess when I put down my pink ward in the bot river bush it helps prevent ganks for a while. And if your ADC and you both keep your trinket for just the river bush, then you shouldn't have any problem. Again, to each their own play style.

SecretAgentHulk1 votes

As an aside: bloody well build a sightstone right after your gp10 tier 2 and replace your ward trinket with a sweeping lens. Please.

Yes. Please, God. I am apparently the only support in Bronze who knows to do this, and it annoys me to no end when I play top.

BADxW0LF1 votes

If you're playing top, I hope you don't expect them to come ward for you. A support's priority is the bottom half of the map. If that's not what you mean, then carry on :)

SecretAgentHulk1 votes

Yeah, I'm referring to a distinct lack of wards at all places except top :)

BADxW0LF3 votes

This is one thing, as a support main, that always bothers me. First, everyone seems to forget to use their trinket. Second, nobody seems to want to spend the gold to buy a pink ward. Also, if you aren't the support or jungler, then everyone should be upgrading their warding trinket. With the pink ward upgrade you get vision everywhere and destroying wards (more income); with the stealth ward upgrade, you can have 2 wards on the map after CD. So, upgrading trinkets is crucial for map vision. As a jungler, I usually buy sightstone eventually, so that gives 15 wards across the map if doing the stealth ward upgrade with everyone having a pink ward somewhere.

zergman4 votes

Only one minor addition I would have on #1. If you are full build please don't take a creep wave you could let your teammate have. That gold is worthless on you if you don't have any items to replace. No one cares if you have 350+ farm if you lose the game because you didn't let your jungle get some late game CS.

I Main Swain1 votes

This please! There is nothing more frustrating than when you cant get any cs because your full build teammates take it all and you, not yet full build, just don't have the damage to last hit over all that competition.

EPIC amounts of misinformation that is the cancer that ruined this game. NOTHING OF WHAT YOU SAID IS CORRECT WITHOUT THE CORRECT CONTEXT.

  1. sure farm is important, but if you just told all these baddies that after they get crushed in their lane they sit there afk farming at their turret because you know they just need farm, meanwhile their lane roams rapes every other lane, and they never will catch up in farm.

  2. no it is not a huge advantage that you are losing your lane 0-3 and then let your mid roam and rape other lanes and take their turrets all so that you get "your turret first". See the problem with your point is you don't get the turret first losing your lane 0-3 without the enemy leaving. So the correct information is if you can manage to get your turret while losing 0-3 and NOT LETTING YOUR LANE ROAM it is not a bad trade.

Could keep going on and on but i am not gonna waste my time, beyond saying it is people like you that created the cancer that ruins this game with your shit blanket "advice", much like all the faggotry and cancer created by the pros giving advice on their streams to bronze 5's who think they can do wha the pro does.... when they cant and it just makes it worse.

so i am done go on with your "JUST GROUP" and "ALL MID WE WILL WINZ FOR SURE" advice.

There are very, VERY few exceptions to that... however, I've been getting coaching recently, and even my coach suggests building tanky when you're behind unless you're the ADC.

while he does generally play top lane, trynds power growth and build path is more akin to an adcs than most other top laners. i think this need for dmg is why he excluded adcs and mids.

You forget listen to your teammates. If I ping you not to go into the jungle, because I am actually smart enough to know there are 3 people in there and you are not, then listen to me and don't go in. Never happens. There is an exception. Sometimes, in certain matchups, you want to focus on bullying your opponent during the first few levels.

An example is Kat vs fizz. If you let him peacefully farm early on, he will most likely bully and/or kill you and go on to win the game. So, you bully him early and try to hit lv 2 before him. Once you can scare him off, you can zone him and farm.

Also, if your an early game champion, you should try to bully the opponent instead of purely farming, since that's where your power spike is.

Mainly, it's about finding a balance between aggression and farming.

Wimbledofy1 votes

its not really an exception since you should still be trying to get as much cs while harassing. If you are harassing him hard and you arent getting cs, you will likely be hurting yourself more than hurting him. Because when you get harrassed what would you do? you would likely try to farm as hard and carefully as possible. meaning even though he is getting harassed, he is still finding ways to manage to get cs.

Spacesuit Spiff2 votes

Very good post, just wanted to point a couple things out:

  1. If you're 0/3, and you take the first tower, farming safely is going to be nearly impossible because the wave will push out and then you'll be far far away from your tower while you lane against a 3/0. Best thing to do in that situation is shove your lane and then roam. I don't play solo lanes much though, so I could be wrong about this.

  2. First dragon doesn't mean much when you first get it, it's more of a general scaling that's focused on lategame, especially for mages. It's only a huge deal if one team is completely starved of dragons 35 minutes in, at which point that extra 6% item scaling becomes massive. IMO they should just change the buff to "+5% damage to champions".

And to add to your list, after a point it becomes necessary to have an idea of how to end games, and how to herd your team of kittens into position to do it. The safest way is, IMO: outer turrets > mid inner > inner turrets > top or bot inhib > take free objectives > mid > take last inhib while 2 lanes of winions flood their base > flood the nexus/

killing laners sets them behind so about 30 minions is more like it to me

  1. Should clarify this. I've had too many games where an ally would come to my lane for a gank or a tower, then take all the farm on the way out when their own lane was being pressured. Even worse if I'm behind and need the farm. This mostly comes down to "Always be doing something." If you're standing still, you can even start to back while you decide. Just in case. But always be doing something, while keeping in mind the other players of the game needing their own farm.

  2. I think most people understand this but don't care. Mostly because far too many people enter ranked with a normal game mentality and are just there for fun, not for a competitive game. Which is the reason to enter Ranked. Not saying don't have fun, but you should be there for the challenge. Not your personal score.

  3. This one I have to somewhat disagree with. If you're meant to be taking damage then yes you need the tanky stats. But if you're behind and you put off building damage then you're going to stay behind. Doesn't matter if you can live 50% longer if they still out damage you that much. Don't be afraid to grab a Cloth Armor along the way. But don't ignore damage in favor of defense. It amounts to nothing if you don't do any damage while living, just as you don't do damage while dead. Damage is also much more helpful if you're making picks to catch up. It's situational though.

4, 5 & 6. I have nothing to add.

But I'm adding: 7. Bring more to the game than one roll and one champion. Flexability and teamcomp are more important than you going 5-0-2 as Riven only to lose because you don't fit the other 4 champions that were picked before you. This applies more-so if you're playing in Ranked. There is a reason you're required to own at least 16 champions. Don't waste 9 people's time for yourself. And yes I include the enemy even if they win. If it was a boring win then their time probably feels wasted.

i proabably should clarify on 3. i kind of meant for bruisers/ people who synergyze with tank OR damage items. it does not work for tryndamere, or riven, for example, but say you're behind as jax. just become the team's dedicated tank, or lee sin, or xin zhao, that kinda thing. im just tired of seeing the darius or shyvana or jax or whoever getting dominated all game and continue to just build damage. the same goes for a few mids, like mordekaiser, lissandra, and galio. also applies to many junglers.

While I understand where you are coming from, I'm not sure that I entirely agree. I used to have the same attitude, and tried to learn every lane and multiple champions for each lane. I won some and lost some, and got to silver 3 a couple times but kept going on losing streaks and dropping. I frequently got very frustrated, feeling like I was playing great but my teams just were never any good. I always had a great KDA, but I couldn't carry games.

Since then, I have started trying to play a single champion as much as possible, only switching up when overall it seems like a good idea. I feel like, by doing this, I am able to push small edges a lot easier and take advantage of opportunities that I might have let slip by if I wasn't as familiar with the champion. This is very hard to quantify in game, but it seems like I've been able to improve my win rate this way, climbing back up much faster than I previously did playing lots of different champions.

For example, the original poster is 44-18 with Vel'koz in ranked, and 8-8 with Leona. Personally, if I was queued with the OP, I would want him to play Vel'koz support, even if objectively it seemed like we needed more tankiness.

That is just my recent experiences, however, so everyone's mileage may vary. Just food for thought.

Cindikle1 votes

Getting higher MMR/ranking means you need to understand more of the game. While you can get master or higher just by playing one champion, people do it all the time, they get there because of their understanding of the game. Not just the champion.

That Vel'Koz record could of gone 44-34 if they picked Vel every game instead of Leona. He could of done very well on Leona those 8 losses. Just because his record was better with one champion, doesn't mean it's the best choice.

Getting great with one champions and climbing that way does work. But you will hit a wall at some point because that's all you know. If you get even a little bit out of your comfort zone you will start to drop off. Even though it's better to take a champion you're familiar with to an unfamiliar lane. It's even better to at least have a decent champion pool. You don't have to fill every game. You can still master one champion. But at least have some flexibility.

Overall your post is everything my #7 pointed out. You keep talking about personal record. "My KDA this" "Good score, couldn't carry". This is often said by those who focus on the wrong things. Are you following the OP's #2? If you did well in lane, do you pressure other lanes or just keep in your own lane? If you're that 5-0-2 Riven in top lane, are you pressuring the game or just staying in your lane pushing towers while the enemy jungler who gave up on top is winning the other two lanes?

I also see you've been playing a lot of Ashe. Which I'd hate to point out, but she is one of the hardest ADC's to carry on in soloQ. She's very easy to dive in the current game and she's very team focused. You almost need voice communication to make the most of her.

It looks like you do well on ADC, but Ashe is rarely a strong pick for soloQ unless you with a friend. I'd at least open up your pool of marksmen. Get a feel for which ones go with what team comps.

I appreciate the friendly advice, but I'm left a bit confused. You suggest that my comment about not being able to carry is focusing on the wrong things, but then suggest that Ashe is tough to carry with. This leaves me confused as to whether you should focus on being able to carry or not.

Additionally, I note that although you suggest playing a varied champion pool, in your ranked career you are 50-26 on Zyra, and 91-99 on everyone else combined. You certainly seem to have had by far the most success on the champion you have played the most. This is a pattern that I suspect is somewhat common among players in gold and plat.

Cindikle1 votes

I don't enjoy SR all that much when playing solo so I just get to gold and quit.

For the Ashe comment I'm stating you have the skill to get higher as an ADC main. But you're picking a lacking champion for the job(in solo Q, it's different if you're with people you know on Ashe).

That 91-99 record is mostly from when i started playing ranked. Mid was my first lane so I do well on it and Zyra isn't a common champ at mid so people in silver didn't really know how to handle her. I got S3 gold by cheesing it basically. But that record was mostly from my lack of skill in other lanes that held my team back. I have gotten better, but playing too much ARAM/Dom has left me a little careless with my mana early game. Could probably easily get to plat if I took the time to fix that problem. Maybe. I was the same problem I pointed out in S3.

It took me that many games because I lacked skill in other lanes.

All great points, but I think you're still missing the most important one - don't ask yourself what your teammates messed up on/could have done better when something goes wrong, consider what you could have done better instead. If you've reached your plateau, 4/5 of the mistakes will have been made by your teammates, but the 1/5 made by you is what really matters - odds are you'll never be playing with the same teammates again (assuming you're playing yoloq), so focus on improving yourself.

sigh No-one wards, or gets objectives, or anything for that matter

Ban Zed unless you are a strong zed and picking him.Certain champs in right hands don't really need to farm well just stay alive and be even lvl at six.Zed is one of those.Akali also seems like this most champs are not going to win lane against these champs at lvl 6.

  1. you can never have enough farm- seriously.

Wat is full build

as for elixirs, if you don't get enough gold from other sources than minions to maintain upkeep you are probably doing it wrong and going to lose anyway

Point # 4 is the most chronic issue in this game omg lol. All the other points are very true and some have a duality to them but point #4 is the outcome anyone should expect. I think too many people feel that just because they stomp early game and even into the mid game, that waiting on their full builds will result in continual stomping; not realizing that the enemy team comp completely outscales them at a certain point even if they were to get a full build before them.

I've gotten a lot of rage for pointing this out and emphasizing my team to just "end the game already". It isnt my intention to judge a persons but at the end of the day we all want to win; so why be selfish thinking that your enjoyment comes before ending the game if there is a reasonable chance to? Lots of games can be ended by the mid game, so just end it lol.

I play support.

  1. Objectives are MUCH more important than kills-

Agreed.

  1. If you get behind in lane, build tanky- this advice applies to supports, tops, and jungles(even though they don't actually have a lane).

More often than not, I don't have the income to diversify yet. Lane phase, you're looking at a lvl2 gold generator, boots, sightstone, and maybe a crucible or a censor.

  1. do not dilly dally if your team has a substantial lead-

Agreed.

  1. DO NOT AT ANY POINT, FREAK OUT ON YOUR TEAMMATES-

Agreed.

  1. ward- no explanation needed. just do it ya mook.

Yes. For the love of all things "league", YES! And stop complaining that I don't have the map lit up like a christmas tree. I only get 4 wards (3 stealth and a pink). And just because one expires, I'm not going to travel all the way to dragon pit while we're contesting their inhib turret. (Heaven forbid, I die.)

While I somewhat agree with the tower point, Almost every other game I have played mid, bot complains about how I "lost lane" because they got my tower first even though I firstblooded them, killed them again, and then roamed to push my lead to snowball the rest of the team or shutdown their fed whatever, because I knew I wasnt gonna kill or take the turret of a passive (insert waveclear mage here).
