To those people who say: "we need a tank support"

Divewing··179 votes·14,734 views

Shut up. If you wanna take a squishy top after already seeing a squishy jungle, don't you dare tell whoever is supporting to pick a tank. If tanks were a concern fr you then you pick one. Giving the support crap about what he/she apparantly HAS to pick is completely unfair.

Edit: I feel like there is some confusion as to my point. The problem is what PLAYERS say to the PERSON IN LAST PICK in regards to team composition due to a pick THEY THEMSELVES CHOSE. Such examples: Zed (mid): AP top, we need AP

In response to player hovering any AD mid: No go AP, we need AP

But the most common I see and what I was referring to in original post- Khazix (JG) & Riven (top): Go tanky supp

You have no right to force, pressure, or otherwise discourage, a players pick/champion pool in any instance. Recommendations/requests are fine (can you go tanky please? [should apologise here]), but implying someone has no choice is inconsiderate, rude, and selfish.

Just because you are correct doesn't mean you are right

Just go Draven. Draven is the best tank in the league. https://media.giphy.com/media/26BkNoo7nkgEGZGeY/giphy.gif

Rengar says otherwise.

Nautilus I'M COMMING LITTLE BUDDY! Draven little late.

Then you realize the reason they didn't show Draven again is that he's sitting there grinning as Rengar tries to get through his thorn mail, and then Rengar just gives up because he doesn't have the damages to finish him.

It's depressing when they say this. Had a game a few days ago:

Mid: Akali Top: Fizz Adc: Ezreal Jungle: Kayle Me: Janna Kayle: "You can't pick Janna, do you see our team, we need you to tank" Me: "You should have been prepared to lose when you chose Kayle Jungle after the first three picks were squishy." Someone ended up quitting, thank goodness.

ahferroin76 votes

Which is even funnier, because building Janna as a tank works.

T RexHasTinyArms22 votes

Janna isn't a particularly good pick in that situation, but it's not really bc she isn't tanky. It's bc she doesn't bring something useful to your comp while not being tanky. In lane ez is one of if not the safest ADC pick there is so you should probably bring something other than the most bad ass peel and safety support ever (Janna is fucking awesome) bc your ADC doesn't need it, he need damage or something to cover his weakness. In team fights Janna is often just fine as a support even w/ a completely squishy team that she fits with. If it was Top Gangplank Morgana Teemo or Lissandra Mid Xerath Ziggs Viktor Velkoz TwistedFate Orianna Lux Lulu Karthus Azir or Ahri and JG Karthus Kayle Nidalee or Nocturne then Janna would be a great pick. The team would still be squishy but you would have a ton of poke and Janna can disengage and keep the team safe. However all 3 squish champs want to go in or dive onto the enemy so a support like Annie would be a much better squishy option bc it gives you engage and you can blow up their carries before the stun is over or use Kayle ult to let the focus target after the stun survive to finish their carries. You need engage or CC if you're going squish, not peel w/ that team.

PalPlays2 votes

I would have taken Karma with an Ezreal.

T RexHasTinyArms5 votes

I hadn't thought of that bc I'm shit at her, but that would be a good pick. Has damage in lane, situational root for cc, and can speed up an ally for diving the enemy with kayle ult on them.

Supports don't tank. Supports can soak up some damage but they are never tanks. They don't have the income to tank and they have to drop 800 gold for wards. People need to stop looking at the best champion and build they can get kills with and look at the team and have some tankiness to a team.

LordGeovanni5 votes

some supports can tank well they just cant do it with support items let us pick what we know will help and help ward all together and we will all have a better game

Lady Hammerlock9 votes

they tank pretty well i mean tank supports provide both utility and tankiness probably not enough to stop a void staff or last whisper but enough to be useful

Ariel the Cruel24 votes

Braum Void Staff? Last Whisper? Meet Door.

Braum Meet Vayne +item 3153 +item 3035 :D

ahferroin79 votes

So... Braum TahmKench Galio Rammus Alistar can't tank even on a support budget? I can have Braum and Tahm at 3k HP by 20 minutes in with a good ADC, Gallio builds only magic resist (and a little armor), Rammus builds only armor (and a little magic resist), and Alistair has a built in 70% damage reduction ability.

TurquoiseYoshi1 votes

The thing is, as you kinda mentioned, all of them have defensive abilities. Braum has his shield, Tahm has his gray health, Galio has his health sponge, Rammus has his EW combo, and Alistar has his ult.

Nautilus Leona Taric Alistar Braum TahmKench Shen

That's a little generic. Supports gain income proportionate to how well they and the duo laner are coping with the opposing lane. If they don't do a good job or are camped, then yes -- their income will be low for the AD/P/C as well. Any lane can state this. A tank in top lane who loses lane will not have good income for awhile and not be a tank. However, there certainly are tanks that support and supports that tank because of the previous statements. Also note that all these champions can top if only given a kit with more numbers or 1 different ability. (excluding Tahm // Naut is already a good top). Their tank stats are just too good as well as their hidden power in it and the items they build as support to fulfill a heavy tank that is not cinderhulked out.

No tanks? Well guess ill go super utility roaming support because I sure as hell don't like being the punching bag of the team... Figurative or literal

Firu10 votes

I am also of the school that if I'm late pick and my team needs a tank as support then I have no problems picking a tanky support. (Which in my case is normally Leona or Tahm.) However, the situations that I do find frustrating is if I'm an early pick (let's say 1st) and I pick my best support (Nami) but then mid, jungle, and tank all pick the squishiest characters and get upset at me for not picking a tank.

If you're last pick and picking support and the rest of the team is no tank/no initiation... you're probably gonna lose if you don't pick a tank. Up to you how you wanna play your game.

Wouldn't that also apply to a top laner and jungler that picks a squishy into a squishy team comp? A support cannot always tank as effectively as a tank jungler or top laner due to a gold income and level difference.

Last pick taking support shouldn't be the only one holding that burden there, which may be the point of OP's post.

I would argue that as of right now tank junglers are pretty weak so you really shouldn't run a true tank (ex. Nautilus) in the jungle

The top meta is mostly bruisers as of right now so you can get some tankiness there but i'd rather have an irelia on my team than a shen

Support is probably the best place to put tank now IMO because tank items are relatively gold efficient ATM and the gold on support is better spent into that vs damage. There's a reason why the top tier supports right now are leona, thresh, blitz/naut (Janna is good vs hard engage on them so she became strong too)

AMYS GRAVE2 votes

And this is why we need strong tanks. If tanks were good top lane or in the jungle we would see more diversity in the support role. With more diversity in the support role we can see more AP poke style champs, and that opens the diversity in the mid lane. It really snowballs into other lanes and its why we saw more diversity during the tank meta than we had seen in a long time and why we have seen diversity fall off since the tank metas slow decline.

Kuroi868 votes

If you're team is reliant on a single tank, you're boned. Tanks can soak damage, but on their own they're going to get destroyed.

We have tanks. We have mages. We have bruisers. Build some survival on them. Don't leave the tank as the only line of defense.

Reynard the ƒox7 votes

It's the same no matter which way you rearrange the roles.

It's the same when someone locks Kayle jungle and says "We already have Anne support, top must play tank"

It's the same when someone locks Tryndamere top and says "We already have Zyra support, jungle must play tank"

I agree with you in every way; I've lost way too many games in champion select because low Elo doesn't understand what a team composition is, but I also don't like it when someone tries to start a circle jerk for support mains. It's been done to death.

When people tell me they need a tank support, I usually go Chogath Nautilus Sejuani Volibear MonkeyKing Jax XinZhao Pantheon

With these champs I don't touch their CS, but the kills are up for grabs. I choose depending on the enemy ADC/support and focus on diving the enemy ADC. Basically makes bottom lane a kill lane, of course always starting with item 3302 for sustain and gold income.

Draven tanks much the way Aatrox does. By lifestealing off your face. Remember, Death is the best CC.

LordGeovanni5 votes

not to mention that they still want you to build support items and support items have ok passives but horrible stats

FistOfSharkiesha5 votes

Yeah not to mention supports are money starved and can't even stack defensive items properly. Your level 8 tank support is going to be just as easy to kill as your level 11 glass cannon top laner.

Unless you're the new Mordekaiser, in which case you need a tank support or you're screwed.

SociopathFriend4 votes

To be fair- Alistar is like the hardest peel in the world- "Oh, they're ganking? HEADBUTT and walk away." Leona Nautilus are the Queen and King of CC respectively. Even Taric can work- he brings a steroid to his ADC to keep them healthy and he legit can deal damage if the fight lasts long enough to start getting his passive procs off.

ahferroin71 votes

Sejuani would lkie to contest Leona's royalty.

RogueWill3 votes

Leona wins only because she has lower CD and higher mana pool.... Sejuani canlock you down harder than leona once, leona can keep locking you down every 5 sec

Jungle Lux God4 votes

I agree with this statement, with the exception of when your ADC is Mordekaiser.

If he asks for a tanky support, it's because he practically requires a tanky support to do any sort of damage with his W, since a squishier support will probably get blown up. Your top and jungle can both pick tanks, but if the ADC is Mordekaiser you still need to take a tanky support.

Other than that, it's really not fair for a support to be forced to pick a tanky support because the top and jungler are both building full damage.

Onegarion2 votes

There is a difference between talking about synergy in lane and needs for a comp. You are talking about the former and requires a different level of thinking. Its the same as saying you pick a super safe support for twitch to survive the early game. What you are talking about is between the ADC and support and to me its perfectly acceptable.

Its different to ask for a tanky support when you don't have a tank in the comp. This shows a lack of understanding of how the tank support works from the players themselves.

I just don't like when players do this tho as a whole and expect a tank support to actually be able to tank. You consider the first 3 items are only health at best from a support (item 2049, maybe item 3302, and Boots of choice) and they won't really be building meaningful tank stats until the 4th item. Even a thresh/Ali don't really get tanky outside of their passive/ult respectively and those are only a small time when you consider ali's ult up time and Thresh having to actively collect souls.

TurquoiseYoshi4 votes

This is why I main tanks. Because otherwise, this happens.

IcyPepper3 votes

This is why I use team builder for my support needs.

Do I feel like playing Soraka? Does my team have nothing but squishies? Good thing it takes five seconds to find a team as support!
